McKellen talks Gandalf vs. Dumbledore

In an interview with Sir Ian McKellen, the actor who plays Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, a comparison was brought up between loved characters Dumbledore and Gandalf. Though McKellen and Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) are friends, he did admit that there was no talk between them on "how to play a wizard." However, when asked if he would have taken over the role of Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris, he had the following to say:

Quote:

"People say to me, don't you wish you'd played Dumbledore? I say no! I played Gandalf! The original. There was a question as to whether I might take over from Richard Harris [Gambon's predecessor in the Dumbledore role], but seeing as one of the last things he did publicly was say what a dreadful actor he thought I was, it would not have been appropriate for me to take over his part." He smiles icily. "It would have been unfair."
Also, when prompted with a question of who he thinks would win in a battle, his answer was:

Quote:

"Gandalf. Of course."
It's okay, McKellen! We think Harris does great as Dumbledore.

Hmm, interesting interview. Personally, Dumbledore would win the battle. -wink-

I think Dumbledore is much more powerful, but it would be interesting to see an actual match.

Richard Harris & Ian McKellen are both extraordinary actors. & I looooooooved Ian McKellen as Gandalf.

And much as I like Dumbledore, I still think Gandalf is awesomer ^^

Padie 11-24-2007 11:24 PM

Exactly my thoughts, twinnie. *nod-nod* I always thought Dumbledore was an extension of sorts of Gandalf, a copy with some alterations.

Don't take me wrong, Dumbledore is personally one of my favourite characters [minus the gay part] but Gandalf will always be THE original. I love Tolkien, his work is just - amazing. His writings have always pulled me in like nothing else, and so has Gandalf. He'll win over DumbledoreLuff anytime, methinks. ^_^

Sounds like Ian has some sour grapes against our dear Richard Harris! I don't know who would win in a battle, but I'll put my galleons on Dumbledor just because he kicks butt.

Ginpotter 11-25-2007 07:37 AM

I think Gandalf would win but actually i don't know if Harris once said that Ian was a dreadful actor!!!! I like both and the both have a lot of similarities but I admit that I wished Ian had played DD.

If you knew the back story to Gandalf you would never think Dumbledore would win. I love Dumbledore with the best of you but Gandalf was a Valor, thus his powers are far greater than Dumbledore's. Gandalf was more than a wizard. You have to read all of Tolkien's books and even those published by Chrisopher, his son, to fully understand who Gandalf was. He lived thousands of years and never died. He came from pure good and returned to pure good. He never did evil. He only used his power for good and the protection of Middle Earth. Don't base your choice on Peter Jackson's movie version of Gandalf for they reveal little of who Gandalf the Grey really was. Many people who read LOTR really never get who Gandalf is unless they dig deep to the Silmarillon and even then it gets blurred at times. One of the best tools for understanding Professor Tolkien is a book by Robert Foster entitled: Tolkiens's World from A to Z: The Complete Guide to Middle Earth.

Darn right give me Richard Harris over Gambon any day!

but i can see the comparison between Ganddalf and Dumbledore! and infact between harry and Frodo

EmmaRiddle 11-25-2007 12:58 PM

Dumbledore > Gandalf

Gambon > Harris

griffin_girl 11-25-2007 12:58 PM

Yeah, Richard Harris was perfect for Dumbledore...kind of quiet and there's that thing he does making us think that there's this 'knowing' look in his eye...

Sir Gambon on the other hand makes Dumbledore all loud and sorta energetic at times which makes us wonder a bit: 'Did Dumbledore liven up in his later years?'

:lmao:

but he plays a good Dumbledore too....and I think Dumbledore would win hands down!:P

ack...me and my dad ALWAYS have this fight
"Jk Rowling copied off LOTR"
NO! She was inspired, dad, inspired"
"whatever, you dont undertand..."
"Have you even read harry potter?"

Mrs Felton 11-25-2007 03:07 PM

Personally, I think Dumbledore would win, but that's just cause I love him!!

mione_girlgwp 11-25-2007 03:08 PM

Hmm well I think Gandalf and Dumbledore have may differences.

While in HP DUmbledore tries to remind people that he has weaknesses, especially in the last 3, Gandalf is really never said to have any weaknesses. And I think Dumbledore and Gandalf would first and formost be friends beforefoes on different sides of the battle fields. Just look at them in their books?

Now a battle of wits? That would be much more interesting. And I think would never end. tehehe =)

Interesting interview

Hermionespell 11-25-2007 05:24 PM

Love the interview! :D

I'm a huge fan of LotR as well, and I often make comparisons between Dumbledore and Gandalf. I have to say that HP is still my number 1 though because without HP, I probably never would have loved LotR so much!

Zieko 11-25-2007 09:26 PM

Dumbledore and Gandalf are really different and unique in their own ways. Even though I believe Dumbledore seems to have an extensions of powers that not even Gandalf would probably possess, I still think Gandalf wins. I see him as the "original." Thus...Gandalf pwns Dumbledore :<

cgold 11-26-2007 02:09 AM

I love Gandalf. He's definitely more awesome than Dumbledore. I think book Dumbledore is far wittier than movie Gandalf though. :D

Ltnt. Raven 11-26-2007 04:36 AM

And here I thought I was the only bloke who wondered about such things... I still have no clue who would win. I just know that I love both sets of books as well as movies.
