| | Matthew Lewis talks Neville & Deathly Hallows in new interview
While promoting the Boston leg of the Harry Potter Exhibition (the press launch for which SnitchSeeker attended last week), Matthew Lewis spoke about his work as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter series, and what to expect of his character in the final installment, Deathly Hallows. A new photo of Matt in the exhibition, posing with Neville's Gryffindor robes, can be seen here: Quote: Q: In most of the films so far, Neville Longbottom is a supporting character with limited appearances. How do you establish the character so he is memorable?
A: I'm always in contact with (director) David Yates, and we talk constantly about what Neville would be doing and feeling, even when he is in the background...This is something David Yates is keen about, not just with Neville Longbottom, but with all the characters, to keep the whole scene alive. Q: As someone who was a fan of the books since childhood, is there anything in the movies so far that you wish were different?
A: I was a little upset when the scene in the book "Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix" wasn't included where Neville goes to St. Mungo's Hospital to see his parents (torture victims of Bellatrix Lestrange, follower of Lord Voldemort). That scene was so crucial to Neville's character. But due to the length of the film, we had to cut that sequence. Q: The stories the books and films are told mainly from Harry's point of view. Does this limit the ability to tell the story?
A: Obviously, the books are about Harry Potter how he was orphaned, how he grew up, how he thought at first that he was a Muggle (a person who cannot do magic.)...His interactions with the other characters really touched me a lot with Neville, he helps bring him out of his shell. His interactions with Neville have helped bring Neville along.
Quote: Q: Along with the main characters, it seems like nearly every supporting character, including Neville, has a fan base. Does that have an effect on how you play the character?
A: (Laughs.) People do say, "More Neville, please. It's a shame there isn't more of him in the film." In the last film ("Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince"), Neville only had two lines. I would have liked more, but it is such a massive story that some characters had to take more of a backseat role. Also, there were new characters that had to be introduced.
Quote: Q: What can we expect from Neville in the next film ("Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part One," to be released in 2010)?
A: I got the final script a few weeks ago. Neville has got a lot of stuff to do. The three main students (Harry, and friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Grainger) have been away from Hogwarts, but Neville stays and takes charge of Dumbledore's Army (which leads the charge against Voldemort and his forces.) He is leading an underground resistance. He gets beaten and is a bit bloodied. Q: Are you satisfied with the role he will play?
A: I think the fans are going to love it. Neville really comes through. He's got this older demeanor. Nothing scares him anymore.

I was mad that scene was cut toooooo! It would have been SUPER sad but, as he said, it was sooo important to Neville's charrie.
I just adore Matt I can't WAIT to see his performance in DH!

Neville's awsome. He's not my favourite supporting character, but he's still awsome. It sounds like we're going to get to see a lot of Neville, Ginny and Luna in the last films (part 1 and 2)

Hogwarts RPG Name: unsorted | LOVE IT!!! I can't wait to see this movie!! I loved Neville's role in Deathly Hallows. He kind of ended up on the same journey as Harry anyways even though he wasn't chosen.
It sucks that so many storylines get cut from the films, but the books are so complex it would be impossible to fit it all in there. But it still would've been nice for them to film the scene and then maybe put it on the extended version of the dvd. |

I want to see that caracterisation!
I also thought, still think, that cutting Neville's scene at the hospital was close to a crime.

I so COMPLETELY AGREE with Matthew regarding his disappointment that Neville seeing his parents in St. Mungo's was not in the film. Seeing him staring up at the old picture of his parents wasn't as effective, those aren't the people he remembers and knows as his parents.

I can not only agree with the fact that the sad scene in St. Mungo's had been cut from the movie was out of the question; in my mind OOTP was the WORST film of the series.
No quidditch, no interview with the quibbler, and MOST IMPORTANT: the horrible end: where was the whole conversation between Dumbledore and Harry after the dead of Sirius? I couldn't believe my eyes when the film was over after 2 little hours......
But let's stay on topic: matt is a great actor and i would love to see him writing things on the walls under Snape's nose..... |

I thought I was the only one who thought that OOTP was just plain terrible! My friends were all like "what are you talking about? It's the best yet!" And it wasnt only because of the cuts that had to be made but just w/ the overall way of storytelling...there really was no plot...bad film, bad director who, though has taken a step up on HBP, still doesnt understand how to translate a story onscreen. I rest my case...
And yes you just gotta love Matt! So sweet of him to stick around even with the minimal screen time...there's no one better than Matt to bring Neville to life!
