J.K.Rowling talks depression

In a new, honest & open interview with The Times, J.K.Rowling talks about her battle with depression and admits to having contemplated suicide in the past. Following the split with her first husband she was prescribed cognitive behavioural therapy.

Quote:

“Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted,” said Rowling. “The thing that made me go for help . . . was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn’t right, this can’t be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state.”

Rowling said her usual GP was away, and the replacement doctor sent her away. “She said, ‘If you ever feel a bit low, come and speak to the practice nurse’ and dismissed me.”

Rowling added: “We’re talking suicidal thoughts here, we’re not talking ‘I’m a little bit miserable’.

Two weeks later I had a phone call from my regular GP who had looked back over the notes . . . She called me back in and I got counselling through her.

“She absolutely saved me because I don’t think I would have had the guts to go and do it twice.”
Quote:

“I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never,” she said in an interview with Adeel Amini, 22, for a student magazine at Edinburgh University.

“What’s to be ashamed of? I went through a really rough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”
Jo's frank words have been welcomed by Celia Richardson, campaigns director of the Mental Health Foundation, who said: “JK Rowling is a wonderful role model and it’s brilliant she has chosen to talk about this.”

I'm glad Jo got out of that! It's difficult to pull yourself out of depression.

I agree. She is a great role model.

aliciahutchinson 03-23-2008 03:48 PM

It's such a difficult thing to talk about so openly, and it's even harder to get out of the situation that put you into that state in the first place!!!!! I'm glad that she's so open to talking about it, it's such an important topic, and I find that there just aren't enough celebrities who openly talk about, good stuff Jo!!!!!

It's really good to know that you can have a better life, fulfillment, when you're older. Sometimes I feel like I haven't accomplished anything, but I'm really pretty young.

Jo's such a great role model for everyone, it's fantastic that she's speaking openly about depression because it affects alot of it.

She is SO brave to admit that she was depressed.

RedheadQueen 03-23-2008 06:39 PM

Go JO!! If you need help follow her lead and get it!! Society is more open to this now as a disease and not just a "problem". Good on her to talk about it!!!

Hermionespell 03-23-2008 07:39 PM

She really is wonderful to talk about her depression and such without being ashamed. And she's a very strong woman for being able to get out of it, and she definitely should be proud of herself :)

hpluvr037 03-23-2008 09:31 PM

Ah depression. A topic I'm far too familiar with, since I struggle with it myself. I'm glad she had a responsible doctor that was willing to follow-up on her case. It's good that she's talking about it. Maybe it will help someone else through it, because believe me, it's hard to cope with by yourself.

Beth2310 03-23-2008 09:35 PM

that right there was brave and very admirable of her. It just shows that with all the fame and praise, she's just human who also feels sadness
