| | J.K. Rowling steps down as MS Society Scotland patron (UPDATED)
In the past, J.K. Rowling has donated millions of dollars to the MS Society Scotland, for which she is a patron and advocate since her mother died of the disease in 1991. She has announced today, however, that she has parted ways with the organisation, citing internal struggles between herself and them: Quote:
"I have now reluctantly decided that I cannot, in good conscience, continue to be the public face of a charity that is changing beyond recognition from the one with which I have been so proud to be associated."
Quote:
"I also remain committed to financing future research into the treatment and causes of Multiple Sclerosis, and to campaigning for better care and treatment of people with MS in Scotland, which is the MS capital of the world.
"This disease claimed my mother's life at the age of 45, and I hope to continue giving both time and money to a cause which remains so close to my heart.
"I have not taken the decision to quit my position as patron of MSSS lightly. Late last year, I initiated and attended a mediation session, in the hope of sorting out long-standing and escalating conflict between the Scottish Council and management in London, driven by the imposition of changes by London.
"Unfortunately, this achieved very little. With mounting frustration and disappointment, I have witnessed resignations of immensely dedicated people within MSSS and the increasing demoralisation of staff whom I have come to know and admire over the ten years of our association."
UPDATE: The Scotsman is reporting that there will be an investigation. Quote:
Ms Fagg, who was honoured by the Queen last year for her work in voluntary and carers' services, told The Scotsman that she had been "deeply saddened to see the powers of the Scottish society eroded" in recent months. "During this period, we have, in my opinion, moved from being a largely autonomous Scottish charity to a satellite of the UK society with control of finances and fundraising gradually moving to England. I have personally registered a number of concerns with OSCR.
"I do not believe that the new arrangements for the society in Scotland are in the best interests of people affected by MS."

That is a shame. When you love something so much and want to support and then it starts to stray from the ideals that you fell in love with. I had to do that with the NAACP and it broke my heart.
So I know how she feels, but I'm glad this hasn't soured her on still helping and being a positive change for good in this world.

It is sad that she felt that she needed to step down, but it is good that she still wants to help with finding a cure!! Hope the next step is one that goes up for Jo and all involved!!

as a scottish person, it is important to note that scotland has one of the higest rates of MS in the WORLD and no one knows why, we need the research and the suppport. but that said Jo is right to leave for the reasons she has stated above. and i cant see her stoipping spoorting research and development for a cure for MS not just in scotland but world wide

There must be a very very good reason she is stepping down.....she still supports and contributes, but some internal strife is forcing her hand - that is what I read.

That is very unfortunate, but I'm glad that Jo is strong to be able to say no when something is not right.
Maybe Jo will set up her own organisation for MS, and the people she admires will join her |

| Hocus Pocus * HP Newsoholic Wow; that's too bad for JK and the organization. But I've been involved in my local MS organization where I live. However, I don't have alot of money, but I help when I can including walk-a-thons and talking with people about it. A friend of mine has MS and she's a fantastic person; she doesn't use her "special-ness" to hamper her one bit. She's got a brilliant and energetic mind. |
