HARRY Potter has been weaving his magic in Ross-shire, the Ross-shire Journal can reveal.
For a film crew from Warner Brothers has been in Evanton for the past 10 days filming around the Black Rock Gorge area, to use shots as the backdrop for the next Harry Potter blockbuster.
Around 30 film crew were in Evanton to film scenery for Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, the fourth Potter film about the schoolboy wizard based on JK Rowling's world-famous books.
The project has been shrouded in secrecy but this week a spokeswoman for Wa rner Brothers in London, which is producing The Goblet of Fire, said, "Yes, this was pre-production filming and the shots will be used in the next Harry Potter film.
"We have not confirmed the final cast yet and we don't start shooting proper until later in the summer. Further details will be out in the next few weeks."
The film crew provided welcome trade for the Novar Arms Hotel in Evanton, as well as hotels in Dingwall, over the 10 days.
And the move promises even more lucrative long-term tourism spin-offs.
It is understood the spectacular Black Rock Gorge, which is a mile long and 125 feet deep, will be used as a backdrop for a scene in the Goblet of Fire in which Harry Potter is chased into a gorge.
The Black Rock Gorge is on the 21,000-acre Novar Estate owned by the Munro-Ferguson family.
Estate manager Cameron Ross said, "The crew spent about 10 days here between setting up, filming and then tidying up afterwards.
"It all went very smoothly and, from the estate's point of view, we were delighted to be involved.
"The arrangements all happened very quickly. Warner Brothers first came up in early March to do reconnaissance.
"They had a shopping list of various sites. They had a look at Novar and a few others sites across the north and I'm glad to say that the Black Rock Gorge seemed to fit what they were looking for, both in terms of dramatic landscape and accessibility for getting people and equipment in and out safely."
Cameron said there had been an income for the estate - "not huge, but a small bonus which we had not been expecting".
Tourism chiefs welcomed the Potter presence in Ross-shire.
Gordon Ireland, Highland Council's tourism development officer, said, "This is good news for the Highlands as it will certainly help to put the area on the map.
"It's also good that they are using new locations in the Highlands such as Black Rock Gorge, because the Highland shots in the last film were mainly around Glencoe and Glenfinnan.
"We have no quantifiable evidence as to the economic benefits of filming in Glencoe, but we have certainly had a lot of enquiries from Harry Potter fan clubs about the area.
"As soon as the new film comes out I'm quite sure there will be similar enquiries about Evanton and the Black Rock Gorge, as there is a very dedicated following who like to go and find out where the film has been shot and experience the Harry Potter magic firsthand."
A spokeswoman for Strathpeffer-based Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board said, "We are delighted that Warner Brothers has returned to the Highlands and that new locations are being used again for the latest film.
"The Highlands have appeared in every Harry Potter film so far and countless other films, thus reinforcing the beauty of the world-famous Highland scenery.
"A lthough individual locations can be hard to identify in a film, we know a film crew coming to the Highlands brings huge economic benefits to the area."
