Had you read the Harry Potter books before you applied to translate Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?
No! I read the book chapter by chapter as I translated - I wanted to keep the freshness of discovery, thinking that if I was amused or excited by anything it would be more likely tio come across in the Greek - rather than if it was all a bit stale.

Translating and researching the book must have been a huge and momentous task. Were there any points at which you wished you hadn't taken it on?
Yes - when I was halfway through my allotted time and only about a quarter through the book!

How did you go about translating the book?
First I read as much as I could of original Greek that was relevant to the JKR style and subject matter - especially Lucian, who wrote in the 3rd cent AD (but in the style and vocab of 600 years earlier). His most famous work is "The True Story" which he says contains not a word of truth. It contains a trip to the moon, a visit to an island made of cheese, and being swallowed by a whale, on a forested island in whose stomach his hero lives for a considerable time (and much more). I worked either at home, or in a university library surrounded by dictionaries, grammar books, and the works of Lucian and other Greek authors.

Now that you've finished translating it, what will your thoughts be when you see the finished product on the shelves?
Relieved! It's taken a long time proof reading and getting the Greek on the jacket right - there are no ancient Greek typesetters! It will look like all the other HP books - apart from the Greek!

That is so awesome.. but crazy as well. A single man translated the whole book? That would take forever- but everyone's got to have a hobby, right?

Who'd actually read that book though, I wonder? Who reads in ancient greek? Hehe. :/
