2004 marked the first year since 1999 the Harry Potter books didn't make the " Ten Most Challenged Books" list which is published annually by the American Library Association. Quote:
This year marks the first time in five years in which the Harry Potter series does not top or appear on the list.
Quite astonishingly, the children's book series, 'Captain Underpants', made it onto the list as did literary classics like John Steinbeck's, 'Of Mice and Men'.

Yeah, I had forgotten Hermione had said that... Although I don't think they're losing interest in HP, considering all those pre-orders  lol. It's a silly list if they include Captain Underpants, though...I've never heard anyone have a problem with it.

^ Yay!!! I do think people are realizing that HP is popular for a reason... it's certainly more than a fad, not just in terms of longevity, but also in terms of its impact on the landscape of youth lit.

Hmm... Captain underpants is a little wierd though. While it may be funny for kids Ive read them and they just seem to be a book about fart jokes and stuff like that. Kids need something a little more educational. I dont know why Harry Potter would be on there though...

But being 'weird' doesn't make them dangerous and besides, they're meant for children. The jokes are obviously for kids. Fiction should be fun, not just educational. Reading, in itself, is very educational. My 8 year old brother reads them and as a result, creates his own comic books. So, Cpt. Underpants IS a good thing. It has also made him want to be an author.
