Post HP: Genius behind a new genre?

The Harry Potter books have done what few others have - they've crossed both gender and age lines. They have no specific audience, but a wide and varied one. You could say, Harry Potter is almost being credited as the genius behind a whole new genre of books.

Quote:
Traditionally, books have a specific audience. They are written with children in mind. Or sci-fi readers. Or romance addicts. But author J.K. Rowling created a series of books that are read by young and old, male and female. Parents read the same books as their children and became just as enamored of the characters as their children did.
Author, Tina McAllister, agrees that this new 'genre' is a good thing:

Quote:
“I have readers from teens to seniors enjoying my book,” Tina asserts. “I wrote the book without concentrating on my target market. I just had a heartwarming story to share. Not the best idea in regard to the business of selling books, but I wasn’t going to change the story just to make sure it stuck in a particular genre.”
Quote:
Author Tina McAllister is tickled by the response she is getting from her readers. “On my website, I mention that the book is suitable for all readers, from 13 to 93. And I’m getting email showing that those ages are right on target. I love it that an older reader can connect with the book just as well as a teenager. It’s every author’s dream.”

Well, yes, but it's nice to read new articles discussing Harry Potter and its effects on literature, as a whole.

I`m very pleased that there people who don`t think that HP is not suitable for children, but it is OK for all ages.
J.K.Rowling should be very proud of such opinions. She`d done a great work - to write a book for all human kind.

Go Jo!! Well we all knew this but it's nice to see other people acknowledging her pure genius...

I mean I introduced my little cousin and my Nan to the world of Harry Potter... It really does traverse age barriers like nothing else!

If you read the full article, or even mine, you'll see she agrees with the trend and her books are a part of that trend.

i've always felt that way about harry potter..... for example..... one day i was in class reading OotP and i look up and my teacher is reading the exact one! it was really funny.... and we spent the rest of the time in class talking about hp! i love to be able to talk about hp to kids, teens (like me), and adults about the same subject! GO HARRY POTTER!!

Question Ottery loves HP, but who's Tina McAllister and why didn't you mention her book?
Paris & Kellybear r luv :Read Otty 's fics:Gone With the Wind:I♥Rupert

Everyone's going to hate me...but in truth I don't think HP did any such thing. Bookstores, and libraries have always catalogued books by genre, or subject, and audience, but real literature [which I think HP is] is not written for a specific audience. It is just written. JKR didn't write HP so to become a best seller, its so good it just is. But Bookstores make niches, not real authors. That so many authors sell out...

never heard of this tina mcallister either, but since she's got a book "for all ages" too, i guess i'll look for something.

maybe this can convince some other ppl who still think hp is for kids

What an honor to write a series of books that not only interests different age groups but different nationalities as well as both sexes.
