The Holocaust Museum is marking its 10th year with a display on book burning that includes images from a New Mexico town where Harry Potter books were torched by people who said they teach children to become witches.

The museum put a copy of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" into an exhibit, opening Wednesday, that marks the 70th anniversary of book burnings in Nazi Germany. Near it are three color photos of a bonfire set Dec. 30, 2001, by the Christ Community Church in Alamogordo, N.M.

The Rev. Jack Brock, pastor of the New Mexico church, called Harry Potter books "a masterpiece of satanic deception" when he lit the fire. Across the street from the bonfire, hundreds of protesters, one dressed as Adolf Hitler, formed a line that stretched a quarter-mile. "Stop burning books!" they chanted.

thanx to darkmak for the scoop

I come from a religious family and to think that some one would burn a book because they believe it leaves a 'satanic' impression is pure nonsense...**takes deep breath*** my family knows all about the book and although they get touchy on the subject they have no problem...AND Who does this guy think he is...he can't speak for us! It his constitutional right to do that (protest the book) but saying that it leaves a satanic impression on me or anyone else is absolute stupidity >

Unfortunatly, there are people out there that protest all fantasy and adventure novels. They don't even bother to read the books, they just hear about teh genre and immediately assume it's going to "warp our fragile little minds." I know this, because I wrote a college essay on censorship and book-burning just this year.

WHat they believe they are doing is buying the book to prevent anyone else from buying and reading it. What they fail to realize (or don't care to) is that they are contributing to an effect where if the book sells a certain number of copies, it will be reprinted, thereby flooding the market with even more of the "offending" material.
