HBP on 'forest-friendly' paper?

Greenpeace, an environmentalist organisation, has started a petition to campaign that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth Potter novel due for release on July 16th, should be printed on ancient forest-friendly paper.

The petition is to the American publishers, Scholastic.

The Canadian publishers, Raincoast Books, did something similar for OotP, when it had all of its books printed on post-consumer recycled paper.

Jo Rowling, the author herself, has previously said the following on the issue,

Quote:

"The forest at Hogwarts is home to magical creatures like unicorns and centaurs. Because the Canadian editions are printed on ancient forest-friendly paper, the Harry Potter books are helping to save magnificent forests in the Muggle world, forests that are home of magical animals such as orangutans, wolves and bears. It's a good idea to respect ancient trees, especially if they have a temper like the Whomping Willow."

Yes! Finally some environmentalists doing something that'll help! I love the idea!

Petrovich 02-22-2005 09:14 PM

I`m glad that Greenpeace not only called `Green`.
And I wonder what trees have such talent like Whomping Wilow?

shyviolet 02-22-2005 09:17 PM

I think its a really good idea! :jump:

Save the trees kids, save the trees...

It's highly doubtful they'll change it now, they should have done this petition way earlier.
It costs more money for that type of paper, and lots of copies have already been sold for a preset price.

Good idea maybe for the last one...

Ooo this reminds me of that bumper sticker I got off of some website: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...d_of_trees.gif

*Snivellus* 02-22-2005 09:32 PM

^oh nice sticker lol

*alohamora* 02-22-2005 09:59 PM

Oh people are always having a go at something or another. . . I personally don't think it's a bad idea, just more costly for the customer.

I was surprised at the title of this article... I don't think I had realized the Canadian editions were the only ones printed on forest-friendly paper. I'm glad, because I'm Canadian, but I definitely think other editions should follow suit. As for it being too expensive & too late... it's never too late and the price of losing our forests is much greater!

i dont think greenpeace shoudl've started this petition stuff, i mean they know JKR's already had OOTP (the canadian edition at least) printed on forest friendly paper. they should tell other authors to take this seriously. JKR's already doing her share of protecting the environment.

Poor_Snivellus 02-22-2005 10:14 PM

I already paid for it so its not to costly for me, but i think it is a good idea.

Starbreeze 02-22-2005 10:57 PM

Thats a really good idea!!!

mione_girlgwp 02-22-2005 10:58 PM

Thats a great idea!!!

rupertLOVER22 02-22-2005 11:04 PM

i do agree with that last statement but i dont think it matters to me whether or not it's printed on "forest-friendly" paper.

hermione-weasly 02-23-2005 12:30 AM

yesssssssssssssssssss

AccioSnuffles 02-23-2005 01:15 AM

I can only imagine how much paper is needed to print every single copy of any HP novel. So I do hope, they use some time of forrest friendly paper or recycle somehow (i don't mind that the paper isn't pure white either).

Kazters 02-23-2005 07:59 AM

they should do the paper back verson on recicled paper but it makes it harder to read

I think the Austrian/German books are also printed on forest-friendly paper, but I'm not sure ...

loony 4 ........ 02-23-2005 12:15 PM

JK Rowling is doing something great. Itll tell those people who are against HP that it doesnt pollute kids' minds

Kazters 02-23-2005 01:59 PM

^yeah exsept that it is only in canada at the moment not everywhere they are startin a petition to get this to happen.

Dobby_Rox 02-23-2005 03:26 PM

i think that's a wonderful idea, seeing how popular the books are, and how long they are.

i went and petitioned!

Leeness 02-23-2005 05:14 PM

i wonder how psper can be forest friendly, it still comes from a tree.

he he save the trees!

RedMartini 02-23-2005 08:52 PM

great idea!

Hoggywarts 02-23-2005 09:14 PM
