Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I to only be shown in 2D format, not 3D

In a new press release, Warner Bros announced that due to time constraints, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I will ONLY be featured in 2D in conventional theatres and IMAX, not 3D. However, Part II, as originally scheduled, will be featured in both 2D and 3D formats.

Quote:

Warner Bros Pictures has made the decision to release “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” in 2D, in both conventional and IMAX theaters, as we will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality.

We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey, and to that end, we are releasing our film day-and-date on November 19, 2010 as planned. We, in alignment with our filmmakers, believe this is the best course to take in order to ensure that our audiences enjoy the consummate “Harry Potter” experience.

Producer David Heyman said, “For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowling’s books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment.”

Director David Yates continued, “This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has always put quality first.”

As scheduled, on July 15, 2011, we will deliver to conventional and IMAX theaters our final installment of the film franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” in both 2D and 3D formats.

That's great that they prefer a quality film over trying to make heaps of money out of the 3D trend that's going on now. You don't hear that too often nowadays. :) Of course, they're going to make heaps of money anyway, regardless of whether the movie's in 3D, so they've got nothing to worry about in that area.

And I was going to see the movie in 2D anyway, so this perfectly fine with me. ^_^

what!!

newtscholar8 10-08-2010 06:38 PM

Good I dont like 3D it hurts my eyes....

jain 10-08-2010 06:41 PM

fantastic news. I don't understand this whole 3D obession. Apart from one visit to my local imax. i plan to watch the other 29 viewing in 2D. 3D just gets in the way of a perfectly great cinema experience

Vargaroth 10-08-2010 06:41 PM

Ill see it regardless but im kind of surprised.

brislunatica 10-08-2010 06:45 PM

what?? Omg i fell to die =(

Mr.Snitch > 10-08-2010 06:48 PM

I hate WB enough!!!

Patronus Charm 10-08-2010 06:48 PM

I dislike 3-D!

Prof. McGonagall 10-08-2010 06:53 PM

There is no need for this movie to be in 3D...however I am SO glad it'll still be shown in IMAX!

Yea, same here.

cherbear09 10-08-2010 07:00 PM

im not a huge fan of 3d either. i really dont notice much of a difference...

i cant even believe the thought had crossed their minds to possibley have to push back the release date again to make it completely 3D!!

I am SO GLAD they didnt!!

Looneybird 10-08-2010 07:05 PM

Yes! Thank God WB realized the giant mistake they'd make if it was in 3D. Avatar pulled it off because it was a different movie in itself. The same glove doesn't always fit everyone.

I'm extremely pleased that a film company is actually putting the quality of the film first over how much product it can rank in with a 3D bonus, especially now with the 3D craze. There's no need to compromise a good film with unnecessary effects. At least WB is doing something right after the HBP screw up...there's hope for them yet.

Me to:)
I don't like 3D much.

Fastbak 10-08-2010 07:06 PM

I'm not that disappointed. Sure it would have been nice to see certain shots like Nagini or the motorcycle chase scene in 3D but it would be better to see it in good quality 2D than crappy 3D. There a lot of movies out there where the 3D quality was really bad and it hurt the movie.

I completely agree. While, yes, we were all anticipating 3-D, I'd rather them not do it as opposed to a quick, sloppy, bang-up job.

PLUS: how cool would it be to RE release Part I in 3-D a month before Part II? I'm sure by June, they could get them both ready. =) (marketing decision? Perhaps) =P

alyssa_hilary 10-08-2010 07:54 PM

Uuuuhm. What's the point in releasing part 2 in 3D now? Or are they going to complete the 3D for part 1 and put it on the dvd/blu-ray?

I agree with you completely Amy! Your tweets said it best today. I'd rather see it done well than quick and sloppy. Plus, the idea of it being re-released before Part 2 in 3D could be a very wise marking move for the company as well. I'm sure that with LeakyCon being held that same opening weekend, there could be a lot of things that could happen for the fans. I know I would love to be able to see it in 3D with my friends during that weekend.

Delis 10-08-2010 08:02 PM

OMG! Buuuuuuuuuuu! I wanted to put on my glasses and enjoy HP7 1

JerethX 10-08-2010 08:24 PM

I was planning on 2-D anyway, it's too far for me to go and camp out at a 3D place.

KatielovesHP 10-08-2010 08:32 PM

Part 1 won't have enough action to need 3D anyway. If 2 isn't 3D I will not be happy!!!

farahq 10-08-2010 08:36 PM

I liked all of the series with 2D so...........

averageteenx 10-08-2010 08:39 PM

2D has worked so far, what's the point of messing around for the last film with another dimension?

Nia 10-08-2010 08:54 PM

To be honest, i don't mind at all. Of course it would've been interesting to see this film in 3D too, but good quality must come first. We don't want anything to ruin this film, so i'm completely fine with this decision. And i'm so glad it's not just all about money, i believe they really care about this and want to give us a great film. :)

Camille 10-08-2010 09:07 PM

GOOD! 3D is such a gimmick and would, I think, really take away from the film. They should do the same for part 2!

I totally agree with you! I think it's really good news

LunaLove 10-08-2010 09:50 PM

Slightly disappointed, but oh well. At least it will be good quality 2D....and I won't have to pay the extra $3 charge for 3D movies :)

bonnieginnyfan1 10-08-2010 09:52 PM

I was really hoping for DH1 to be shown in 3D. It would of been really good if it was. Though you do see some things better in 2D.

princess of*hp* 10-08-2010 09:57 PM

It's better that they don't rush the process and give us, well... crap. It's for the greater good.

IMAndyDrew 10-08-2010 10:02 PM

I'm so glad to hear this from Warner Brothers: regardless of whether people want 3-D or not; they're attentive to detail and high quality. I can't tell you how annoying it is; a 3-D Film that doesn't deliver on it's 3-D Special Effects. With or Without 3-D: will still be one of the greatest Movies ever! (3-D just being a Bonus to the Finale's Cinematic Experience). "the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" will definitely deliver a great 3-D Film / Film Experience; building a more Climaxtic close to the Series (Especially since it'll be the 1st & only 3-D Film at it's Finale).

alohomora♥ 10-08-2010 10:41 PM

Personally i prefer 2D. I was actually planning to see first in 2D and then in 3D. I really don't mind, i just want to see it!!!!! ♥

HogwartsHokage 10-08-2010 10:46 PM

Meh, I'm not surprised. So far I've watched all the movies in 2D, so yeah, a little more 2D wouldn't hurt. Toy Story 3 was the first movie I saw in 3D, and it was alright. It was mostly to the point where I can't tell whether it was 3D or not.

sweetpinkpixie 10-08-2010 10:49 PM

unless the film was made to be in 3D - which I highly doubt it - then I think of it as a waste of time. Avatar was amazing in 3D but everything else I have seen after that in 3D looked silly...

Now we can all be sure to enjoy DH and our moving going experience without having to worry about Hermione's hair popping out at us.

ZodiacGirl 10-08-2010 10:56 PM

Just leave films as they are. They cost millions of quid to do anyway, so why spend that couple of extra million on making it 3D when most people I talked to don't even LIKE 3D. Hurts my eyes tbh.

R-Luchy~W*7*PG~ 10-08-2010 11:40 PM

Oh,okay..that's why they didn't show the trailer in 3D in theaters..

Butterbeer7 10-08-2010 11:42 PM

I don't like 3-D! It would make the movie worst!:albus3:

lorlor57 10-08-2010 11:42 PM

i'm glad, i really hate this 3D phase with everything, its just a way for them to make more money, and 3D hurts my eyes so im happy :)

hpluvr037 10-09-2010 12:50 AM

I'm surprised, but not disappointed. I wasn't going to see it 3D anyways. It's way more expensive and usually isn't worth the money.

Ginny GL 10-09-2010 01:44 AM

My heart is broken!

BearyMay 10-09-2010 02:24 AM

:( I was really looking forward to HP in 3D..
Oh well, there is always the second part ;)

hanje88 10-09-2010 02:28 AM

- Cool!

RadcliffeWatson 10-09-2010 02:41 AM

YES! Thank god :D

ronhermioneroc12 10-09-2010 04:07 AM

I am all for 3-D on part 2- the BATTLE not to mention seeing R/Hr kiss in 3-D hehe... but I think this was a good decision on WB- we will be seeing it at the IMAX- so READY for this movie(s)!!!!! :)

ybbod 10-09-2010 05:17 AM

Good! I hate 3D movies , they makes my eyes and head hurt!

Weirdo5 10-09-2010 05:28 AM

Personally, I like this!^_^

SilverShiner 10-09-2010 07:32 AM

Yay! If i can't watch it in 3D, none of you can!

Taiya89 10-09-2010 11:50 AM

My hands are nearly shaking!!! I'm so upset...I wanna cry!
CRUCIO WB!

Although I do understand way, doesn't mean I'm not sad :(

greenribbons 10-09-2010 12:04 PM

absolutely fine with moi. i do believe that 3D does make my eyes go all funny, so 2D is perfect. besides, why would you want to spend extra money on a 3D movie with hardly any action, when part II will have plenty?

h/g ship lover 10-09-2010 01:28 PM

I don't really care what form it's in. As long as I get to watch it. That's what's most important. :)

FreeDobby 10-09-2010 01:39 PM

I don't think Harry Potter shpuld be in 3D anyway. I think it would have ruind the film like that. Keep it simple and the movie always turnes out AMAZING! woot woot

PhoenixRising 10-09-2010 02:44 PM

The best news I ever received about the films. ^_^

mellamaet 10-09-2010 03:13 PM

GOODIE :) It would have been terrible if thy joined the 3D mania :) 2D has been awesome all this time. Why change what isn't broken?

Moaning Myrtle lover 10-09-2010 03:20 PM

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):):) I love this! I hate 3-D anyway,so this is good news. I only watched one film in 3-D and that was How to Train Your Dragon. It's very cool that WB decided to make the right choice for the film.

Steelsheen 10-09-2010 06:27 PM

lol, you know what this means-- this will be re-released in theaters a few years from now in 3D with "never before seen footage" attached to it also rendered in 3D. milk. cow. you know it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - all previous HP movies are just fine in 2D
they can always do HPDH part 1 & 2 in 3D for DVD

skinny_bones4 10-09-2010 11:15 PM

I'm not a fan of the 3D format, so this is a good thing!

CrimsonGryffindor 10-10-2010 04:57 AM

I agree with most ppl on here, I see this as a good thing. 3D conversions suck! I want to see this film in the IMAX, but now I don't have to suffer through that crappy "3D" stuff and I just get to see it in a mondo-gigantic screen! YAY!

milloy112 10-10-2010 10:20 AM

I was looking back in the comments and saw one or 2 people mentioned about Clash of the titans was a trainwreck, it was only a trainwreck because it was done in conversion 3D, which is what they were going to do Harry Potter in. Conversion 3D is no were near as good, for example:

Clash of the Titans - Conversion
Avatar - Non conversion.

If you see those 2 films in 3D you would notice that it is good in a way that its not being done in 3D

Hermionespell 10-10-2010 03:47 PM

I'm okay with this. I never really liked the idea of them showing the entire film in 3D anyway.

purebloodprincess87 10-10-2010 04:16 PM

Yes, thank the lord

harita 10-10-2010 05:14 PM

oh...that's bad that it wont be in 3D...but yeah its a proper decision to take though...but there is nothing to worry about it i guess we will watch the movie whichever format it is in as long as it is awesome...:D...;)

Bass 10-11-2010 02:18 PM

I wish this was true for the theater I go to but o their website it still says 3D and I heard for my theater that they're not changing it for Part I and I hate 3D.

phoenix_tears 10-11-2010 04:21 PM

I'm so glad that they won't change the release date! Besides, I don't think that I'll like HP in 3D !

jessikah 10-11-2010 05:08 PM

woooo! i HATE 3D

Tommehbell 10-11-2010 06:33 PM

not every movie needs to be in 3D but that seems to be the catch phrase for the new decade or something,

not sure how well DH will work in 3D anyways

harrypfreak4life 10-12-2010 12:04 AM

Deathly Hallows is only in 38 days now...

awwwhhh seriously??!! they tricked us!! lol oh well, Idk if i would've even seen it in 3D...

Canoir Greengrass 10-12-2010 01:33 PM

I'm so happy to hear this ^_^
