| | Half-Blood Prince release date pushed back to summer 2009 (UPDATE #2)
Warner Brothers have today announced that the Half-Blood Prince release date is to be pushed back to summer 2009. The release date will now be July 17th 2009. Quote:
In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”
Quote:
Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”
The official website for the film has been altered to reflect the change in release date. UPDATE: A new statement from Alan Horn, Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer has emerged; Quote:
"The picture is completely, absolutely, 100 percent on schedule, on time. There were no delays. I've seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November."
Quote:
"We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans."
UPDATE #2: Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, spoke early Sunday about the decision to change the release date for the sixth film. Quote:
The studio had been considering the date change for three or four weeks, "but it really didn't kind of get on the front burner until sometime within the last seven days," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Sunday.

I'm starting to think that the whole thing is just a big commercial something and they will maybe release it maybe December instead of Novemeber. Another question I'd like to know what will happen to the game will it be pushed as well because if that is the case then the game industry will lose a lot? Right?

you know what? They want us to watch their Twillight movie this winter, than the HP on summer, so they will earn lot more money! Basically, they don't want two schedules in one season. Great business, eh?

Well, that was a brilliant thing to say.
Still in the disapointment stage.

I am really fuming about this! What an absolute load of tosh that bloke was on about! They are just so greedy! It's all about greed these days and they don't care about the fans! What are they on about "family tent poles"?

I am fuming.
I am devastated.
I can't believe how selfish and greedy they are being.
I say we do a petition. If they haven't done one already.
Who's with me?

thanks for the update Em!
well this further confirms that the delay is a financial reason. also i noticed that the sudden decision fell during the 3rd quarter of this year, right around the time that companies usually do their financial reports and see if they're gonna end the year with a profit or a loss. i'm guessing WB realized that they will have a very merry christmas this year, but saw the famine that will be 2009, hence the hasty decision with HBP. WTF is WB thinking?
(So July is a better time? Well yeah before Christmas has got to be the worst time for a family film to come out!
Could it be that WB has other films coming out in November and doesnt want HP to be competition for them?) no that isnt the reason behind the HP delay. they were pretty forthcoming with their reasons as listed above. -- although its obvious that the spinmeisters have been through them. Quote:

I was so excited for the movie & I was counting down the days till November
Thinking about it twice though, I think pushing it back to Summer of '09 is a good idea. It's gonna be huge & it's gonna be a major success especially during the summer when everyone goes to the movie theater. this is exactly what WB is hoping for. Quote:

C'Mon people!! i think they're addressing the rumors that the reason for the HBP delay was because it wasnt ready to unspool in November. which i doubt. they've stopped shooting sometime May, they'd surely have enough time to finish the VFX what with an army of graphics artists getting things done on schedule. the imax official site says a completely different date...Nov 21, 2009. HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE- NOVEMBER 21, 2009
I Effing hate this. Warner Brothers and Imax are now on my bad list...
They're a bunch of blood-sucking, money-grubbing a-holes, just like every other film producer in corporate America.
I'm extremely disappointed in them.

| EDIT: Wait... so... no delay?
*is confused*
Is it July '09 or November '09? (I say yay if so but that's my reason really...)
Or... still the same with November '08?
They need to decide on these things before sending out the news. Sheesh. If they don't wanna disappoint fans keep it consistent...

as far as we know, IMAX is still screening HBP in July 2009. according to their statement here |

IMAX must just have switched the year without changing the month and date. Easy enough mistake to make, I guess.
