| | G.P.Taylor expelled after 'gay' HP misunderstanding Several different news sources are reporting that while on a tour of schools author G.P.Taylor referred to Harry Potter as 'gay'. He was also accused of using inappropriate language (fart, bum, bogey and pee) and was thus removed from the hall. Quote:
"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, referring to a catchphrase from the popular comedy TV show "Little Britain".
"All I said was that my villains are scarier than those in Harry Potter, and they are. I called Lord Voldemort Lord Vulgarwart. I said he was a bit of a wimp."
"It was a joke; a joke from 'Little Britain' that the children would know," Taylor was quoted by newspapers as saying.
"I didn't set out to offend. I'm a priest and I'm very careful about not offending people."
"It is down to a growing climate of political correctness. It is curbing freedom of speech."
Personally, I agree with G.P.Taylor, it was a joke referencing what's popular; a way of connecting with the teens who would have known what show he was referring to. I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. |

My concern is this: Why to other authors find a need to either joke about HP or put it down. In my eyes it's very sad to see. Gone are the Inklings. The Inklings were a group of British authors of the 40, 50 and into the 1960's in Oxford, England. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein were part of the group.

The Inklings...good authors, but to me that seems elitist.
But then, that's just me.

As far as I am concerned, this guy needs the publicity. I bought his first book when it came out, because I was waiting for HP to come out, and I returned it. It was boring. I couldn't get beyond the first couple of chapters. Also, the priest was the bad guy, in league with the devil. And "they" are upset because HP has dragons and the kids say a couple of spells?!? I don't get it. But, anyway, boring read, boring author, and now his name is in the paper and his face is on the TV. Good PR move.

I put it the wrong way not language but the way he talked to the kids, and since I am not a follower and I hope people respect my option, I do agree with what staff did, they escort him out of the school, here is a quote from CNN: "Teachers brought Taylor's talk to the 12-year-olds on Tuesday to a premature end, saying the youngsters had become "excitable," and asked him to leave.
'We were very disappointed to have to curtail a visit from Mr Taylor,' the school said in a statement on Thursday.
'The seven staff from the school who were present were very embarrassed and uncomfortable with what was being said.
'The remarks that were made were thought by the staff to be offensive and were well below the standards that we expect of responsible and thoughtful adults working in our school.' "
This are kids we are talking about not adults!

He's a preist and doesn't want to offend people? Ooook. I think the guy has a real attitude problem. J.K Rowling's books are loved cause she writes them beautifully and she doesn't walk around going "Harry is so much better then Artemis Fowl I mean come on Artemis doesn't even have power, what a twerp!" why do all these authors knock the books down. It feels like we're in elementary school and these grown adults are so jealous they are resorting to going "Your poopy I hate you!" OI!!
A guy like G.P Taylor doesn't have any right to be near children.

The reference is not from an adult's programme but one with a 12 rating.
He hasn't said anything offensive and neither was he implying Harry is actually gay.

Harry isn't homosexual and even if he were who cares? Hes a great character and people need to stop being so homophobic against gays and assuming. It's prejudice. I'm bi-sexual myself anyway and I find Harry pretty attractive. though not as much as Ron

Some responses to this are slightly exaggerated. I mean, I think every single kid says 'fart, bum, bogey and pee'... how are they offensive?
But what he said was a bit pointless.

| Ultimate Potterite Original original Wow, I didn't know Mr. Taylor was really like that!
I met him once, at a booksigning in a local bookstore.. And he seemed kind of crazy, but I didn't think he was rude!!
Though, I'm sure these reports can be exaggerated quite a bit. He's brilliant in his own way, but he should watch what he says when some HP fanatic is likely to report what he's said. -twitch-
How dare he?! Harry Potter fans unite! We shall avenge thee!

Because the staff over-reacted. I fail to see anything offensive in what he said. He quoted a TV programme and called Voldemort a wimp. Hardly harsh words.

I know and I respect that. I'm saying the words offensive and wrong have different meanings. That's a fact you cannot argue. I don't see how a TV quote is 'offensive'. Perhaps you should explain?
