| | G.P.Taylor expelled after 'gay' HP misunderstanding Several different news sources are reporting that while on a tour of schools author G.P.Taylor referred to Harry Potter as 'gay'. He was also accused of using inappropriate language (fart, bum, bogey and pee) and was thus removed from the hall. Quote:
"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, referring to a catchphrase from the popular comedy TV show "Little Britain".
"All I said was that my villains are scarier than those in Harry Potter, and they are. I called Lord Voldemort Lord Vulgarwart. I said he was a bit of a wimp."
"It was a joke; a joke from 'Little Britain' that the children would know," Taylor was quoted by newspapers as saying.
"I didn't set out to offend. I'm a priest and I'm very careful about not offending people."
"It is down to a growing climate of political correctness. It is curbing freedom of speech."
Personally, I agree with G.P.Taylor, it was a joke referencing what's popular; a way of connecting with the teens who would have known what show he was referring to. I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. |

Yeah I'd agree with that Kaz (yay we've found middle ground!). It wasn't 'wrong' but neither was it the smartest joke to make.

I think he's silly, not because of the joke he made, but because he didn't realise that political correctness wouldn't allow this to go unnoticed.

Not anymore he isn't. Though I fail to see what that has to do with PC.

I dunno. As much as he holds or held a certain responsibility, he's still a person at the same time, who's entitled to their opinion. But as I said at the time of this he wasn't practising anymore.

Joking for not, he should have used better judgment. He needed to take into consideration the age of children he was speaking to. The same joke to a more mature crowd would have meant something completely different. It is the adults job to be the adult.

I agree with you compleatly! I really think that he didn;t set out to offend anyone! All he did was pick up on something that the kids knew about! Why not Harry Potter! I think Lord Valgarwart is really funny! It's just a laugh!
I don't think he has anything to worry about, His books are great and they can be compared to the Harry Potter story. In Shadowmancer there are creatures that go around in capes and suck people to death! And there is a evil villan! Sounds alot like Harry Potter doesnt it! Maybe too much for my liking but thats the book isnt it!
Penair school is the school down the road form where my bro went to boarding school! Wow Ive been past there tons of time! Truro's wicked!! I love the shops! Yay! Any excuse to talk about shopping! Haha |

when I saw this headline, I was a bit........perturbed. I figured he was being rude, but then I saw the whole line, "Isnt the only gay in the villiage" and cracked up. I knew what he was referencing and he targeted it to his audience who would recognize it, that's key when speaking to people. Quote:
"It is down to a growing climate of political correctness. It is curbing freedom of speech."
I whole heartedly agree with that.

I think what he said sounds inappropriate. But I've never seen the show he was referencing. Taking a quote out of context can make it seem a lot worse then it is. However, at face value it sounds very bad.

to me it doesn't sound as much like a joke as it does a dig. I suppose he's jealous, I've tried to read Shadowmancer found it to be boring. Then to have the media compare it to Harry Potter no comparison.

I do have a question though, when someone expresses an opinion against HP or JK, why do most HP Fans automatically say "Im never reading their books!" It's kinda childish.......If you've tried the books and dont like 'em, fine, but an opinion is hardly a reason not to read the book(s). Or they accuse the other person as being jealous...........it's not always entirely true.
Everyone is entiled to thier own opinions, it's not up to us to attack someone for expressing theirs. He didn't go out of his way to call a press confrence to say these things, he was lecturing, and it got reported. *shrugs*

^ um...good point....
i think it's mainly because that is what most of us think is the most important. If you don't like the author, you don't like their books - it's the way of life for us, and we stick to that - we're not childish, we just go by that simple set of rules.

I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. When using the word gay in a derrogitory manner that is insulting to homosexuals everywhere. What's wrong with Harry being gay? Politically correct atmosphere my beast of burden. I'd write an editorial but this subject isn't allowed on SS because of the kiddies...inappropriate...I should think so. Homophobia should be inappropriate.

I have to agree with you there adorable but in Terry Pratchett's case...OMG! it's seething with envy you can see it. LOL. I swear...she deposed him as the best selling fantasy author in GB of course he hates her. You don't see Stephen King getting all huffy. Quote:

Actually that's an oxymoron, you're telling people they have a right to their opinions except when it attacks someone elses. What are you liberal? LOL. Seriously...people have a right to hate him if they want you're just wanting polite censorship but then he's offended me so...*shrugs* shouldn't you shut him up?
