First reports & spoilers from Deathly Hallows: Part I test screening released

The test screening for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I took place earlier today in Chicago, Illinois. One fan, Gaby, who was lucky enough to view it, updated her Twitter with some information about the film. Note that the test screening showed an unfinished version of Deathly Hallows, so green-screen was viewable in some scenes.

For those who don't want to be spoiled, all reports about the test screening will be hidden under a spoiler cut.

SPOILER!!: New info from Deathly Hallows: Part I test screening.
These are from Gaby; as more reports come in, they will be updated here.

Quote:

The movie wasn't completely finished yet. You saw green screen in some parts & the effects aren't done. The music wasn't real either.

One of my fave scenes? Harry cheering up Hermione by dancing with her in the tent. (Was that in the book?)

I saw more of Voldemort in this movie than ever. :(

When Harry opened the locket horcrux, that was disturbing. Especially for Ron who had to kill it. It was like a Harry/Hermione shipper dream

Dobby's death? I sobbed like a baby. D': Every scene Dobby was in, the audience clapped. Never realized how much he was loved.

Ron & Harry's fight was hard to watch. Poor Hermoine was devastated. But you could see how worn out Ron was. You couldn't blame him.

Bellatrix is nuts as always. Totally cringed when she was torturing Hermione. (But Helena Bonham Carter is just too good)

UPDATE: A spoiler-free review was released by Kyle, and can be read below.

Quote:

I was lucky enough to get invited to a secret test screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I at the AMC River East in Chicago this afternoon. We weren’t told what movie we would be seeing until seconds before it started, but my friends and I suspected that it may be Harry Potter due to the Warner Bros signs and the intense security. When producer David Heyman walked in, I was pretty sure what it would be. Director David Yates was also in attendance, and spent some time talking with fans outside the theatre after the film.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is a great continuation of the series, thematically and visually in line with films 5 and 6. Though it is a fast-paced film, with several nice set pieces and much-improved performances from the young cast, it does suffer from two major problems. First, it faithfully adapts the seventh book, including the book’s own problems. The “camping in the wilderness” scenes become quite repetitive, and the attempts at drama/angst amongst the trio during these scenes comes off as tired. Also, the scenes involving the locket horcrux causing its wearer to be angry/aggressive are far too reminiscent of Lord of the Rings.

All three young stars acquit themselves admirably, however, doing the best they can with the material. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, in particular, are quite good. The second problem with the film, and this may be fixed by the time the final cut is released, is the editing. Some scenes feel utterly rushed and incoherent (Godric’s Hollow, for example). Others go on for far too long (Ron becomes jealous, etc.). There are several flashes / dream sequences that demonstrate Voldemort’s search for the Elder Wand. These are bizarrely edited and poorly executed. Luckily, they are just a small fraction of the film.

Despite these issues, this was a quality film on par with films 5 and 6, both of which I quite enjoyed. As with those films, the cinematography is beautiful. There are several creative and dramatic shots throughout the film, so that even if one gets bored, you could just stare in awe at the scenery. The beginning of the film is also quite exciting, including some hilarious scenes with multiple “Harry”s, and a series of great action sequences. The visual effects were not completely finished in these sequences, but I imagine it was quite close to what the final version will be. Another effective sequence involves the trio escaping to a small cafe in London, and a resulting fight that involves wands and spells but feels more like a shootout.

The film ends at a very appropriate spot, and though not exactly a “cliffhanger”, left me greatly anticipating Part II.

At the end of the film, we all filled out lengthy questionnaires regarding our opinion of the film overall (I gave it 4/5), as well as our likes/dislikes with the performances, scenes, and other aspects.

Though I will reserve final judgement until after seeing Part II, this is overall an effective and exciting, if not perfect, continuation of the series that struggles with some of the same problems as the final book, but mostly overcomes them through excellent technical aspects and performances.
If anyone else was lucky enough to view the screening, please feel free to send reports in!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be out November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011.

Team ronmione 08-21-2010 11:36 PM

Awesome. What do you guys mean by the Music wasn't real either-like was it not there, as in Background music or there was no feeling and emotion to it that made your heart cry or want to cheer on the trio?

Update: Killed me. It seems like it is right down to the book, besides minor changes- such as no kiss before the wedding, George not Ron, the dancing with Harry and Hermione- wouldn't mind seeing Dan's dancing "Skills" again. But everything else seems like the producers and Yates read the book and tried to incorparate actual book scenes. Everytime something seemed right I'd scream and raised my hands. I even ran around my house, saying- "Best one Yet"

silver_gitana4 08-21-2010 11:37 PM

omg, that sounds so cool, poor dobby and love the harry/hermione. :)

It means the soundtrack wasn't put into the movie yet, so the just had filler stuff.

R-Luchy~W*7*PG~ 08-21-2010 11:41 PM

Oh,yeah.. I read this already..
It looks cool..

IMAndyDrew 08-21-2010 11:43 PM

If you remember Alexandre Desplat is still working on the soundtrack / score for 'Deathly Hallows: Part I'. He won't be finished til' like the end of September. So that's why.

Laurie 08-21-2010 11:46 PM

I can't wait to see the movie.

crookshanks_kitty 08-21-2010 11:48 PM

I'm pretty sure I'll cry like a baby too when it comes to Dobby's death.

More Voldy than ever? Awesome! :D

I can just imagine how devastated Hermoine will be after Harry/Ron fight. Good for Harry for cheering her up.

Helena Bonham Carter never looks like she's acting. What ever character she plays, she becomes that character. A very talented actress indeed.

Can't wait for November! :D

HallowedGround 08-21-2010 11:53 PM

Fantastic!!!
This seems brilliant!
But as much as I would have ABSOLUTELY LOVED to see this, I am a hugeee music/CGI/general post editing fan, so I'm not so sad anymore. But still glad to get a review!!!

AlwaysSnapesGirl 08-22-2010 12:02 AM

I didn't think it was possible to get any more excited for this movie, but these spoilers just increased my excitement. Eeeeeeee!

Is it November yet?

HogwartsHokage 08-22-2010 12:03 AM

Haha, I ended up reading the report even though I told myself not to read any more spoilers...

Well, it sounds like something worth the wait for November. :)

insanelysyd95 08-22-2010 12:04 AM

It sounds genius!
I'm so excited, although I'm dreading Dobby's death and Harry and Ron's fight.
But I'm now excited to see Harry and Hermione dancing :)

princess of*hp* 08-22-2010 12:06 AM

That's great, although there was really only one spoiler in it for me, a rather cute one for H/Hr. And mind you, not the locket scene! The one listed before that. :xd:

Looneybird 08-22-2010 12:06 AM

Oh I'm so tempted to look! Someone tell me, what should I do?!!!! I'm dying here! :faint:

Alcie 08-22-2010 12:06 AM

AHHHHHHHH WORDS CANNOT EXPLAIN!!!! I'm getting tingly just thinking about it. What a lucky person!

Just look away, grab your hair and start running around, screaming- that should get your mind off things...Not too much was new, but we now know why Hermiona and Harry were filmed dancing- nothing given away with that :) :P

Cassiopia Malfoy 08-22-2010 12:17 AM

OMG! WHAT! That person is so freaking lucky! But I love them, for giving me spoilers.. Lol, at this rate I'll know the whole movie back to back before SEEING it! I feel that I will most likely have to burn my eyes out after seeing the locket.. And Dobby dieing? I probably wont actually watch that seen till the movie has been out for twenty years.. Or else I'll be so glued to the screen I can't look away, which ever is very possible. I'm sure Bellatrix will be amazing! Well, as in.. You know... Ron and Harry's fight will kill me, I will be sobbing hysterically and yelling at the scream, then kicked out of the movie theater :imao: But it will totally be worth it!!!

Magical Soul 08-22-2010 12:30 AM

Merlin's Beard! I'm so freakin' excited....... :woot:

r+h4ever1 08-22-2010 12:49 AM

In theory, it's cute that Harry tries to cheer up Hermione. But by dancing? And when she was completely inconsolable in the books? SIGH. Ron/Hermione. Let's accept it, Kloves...and move on.

I'm looking forward to seeing the torture scene, as odd as that might sound...as well as Ron's moment with the locket - minus the Harry/Hermione thing. I can't wait to see Rupert/Ron in these last two films. And of course, the Ron/Hermione kiss.

Shannon :hello:

sweetpinkpixie 08-22-2010 01:00 AM

I hope the dancing scene is not as awkward as Ron and Harry talking about "nice skin"

Patronus Charm 08-22-2010 01:03 AM

Helena B-C can act completely deranged...i love it! she is a brilliant actress.

newtscholar8 08-22-2010 01:19 AM

OMG IM SOOOO EXCITED. I want to see Ron's reaction to the locket, and his reaction when Hermione is getting tortured.

I CANT WAIT FOR NOVEMBER =)))00

Ginny GL 08-22-2010 01:21 AM

More reports, more reports, please!

harrypotter#1fan 08-22-2010 01:24 AM

Why couldn't I have been there! :(

RonandHermione4ever 08-22-2010 01:27 AM

AHHHH! :woot: SO EXCITED! I almost cried when I read how the scene with the locket is...it will be disturbing indeed (I thought it was disturbing in the book, I can't imagine how it will look like on screen). And so will be the Hermione getting tortured scene. :( I just hope that they show Ron yelling for her and almost crying after hearing her scream in the basement with Harry. I've always wanted to see that scene! I will be crying soooo much during Part 1! Especially when Ron leaves...and the horcrux scene...and the Ron/Harry fight...and Hermione being tortured...and Dobby dieing...and all of the other deaths! :( I wish I was one of the lucky people that got to see it! When I go into the theater to see the movie in November, I probably won't be able to stop talking about it! XD I can't wait for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2!

bonnieginnyfan1 08-22-2010 02:25 AM

How lucky are some people!
Can't wait for it!

BearyMay 08-22-2010 02:59 AM

MelissaWeasley 08-22-2010 03:12 AM

im like dying i dont know what to do
i read hbp test screening and it killed everything, what if i just give it a glance?

sweetpinkpixie 08-22-2010 03:30 AM

Thanks so much for the update! It sounds great and really like it is going to be the Potter film we all hoped it would be.

MelissaRdz 08-22-2010 03:35 AM

oh my, all. i can barely breathe right now. its crazy!! i'm sooo excited right now! i can't wait until november! i cringed at the explanation of Hermione getting tortured but i have to say i'm curious and i was really hoping to see it in the first film, yay us!! i think just hearing about Malfoy manor i know i'm gonna cry during all of that scene or sequence of scenes. it's going to be emotional.

Frozen Cause 08-22-2010 03:36 AM

The movie sounds awesome, but I don't see how the similarity to LotR with the locket is anything to get mad about. Since when is that only Tolken's idea that only he can use. Not too mention it's not very similar in the first place.

MartaPotter 08-22-2010 03:43 AM

I know I'll cry when Dobby dies too! Hermione and Harry dancing wasn't in the book, but I think it's going to be a very sweet scene.

marypao 08-22-2010 04:21 AM

Would love to know how they tied up some of the loose ends... how do they explain Bill & Fleur's meeting? How does Harry get the mirror? How do they find out about the other horcruxes?
Can't wait for November!

sweetbonniemelody 08-22-2010 06:10 AM

I am sure we will get something like that at some point. Or...maybe they replaced that with the horcrux versions of Harry & Hermione making out in front of Ron?

silver.bullet 08-22-2010 06:33 AM

Cool..!!

Emilay 08-22-2010 06:37 AM

Hi this is my first post and it is all very exciting!
I have a question for someone who was lucky enough to see the test screening at Chicago here goes:
When Ron does return, is it dramatic and what is Hermione's reaction?
If someone answers this it would be greatly appreciated :)

HallowedGround 08-22-2010 06:51 AM

As much as this has only made me more and more excited, I sort of wish I hadn't read ALL of it. Some of them yes, but I think the entire torture scene would have been more impressive without knowing...However...
I am the kind of person who, when I know a hand is going to grab Harry's arm from under water (but not when you think its going too)...I go crazy with anticipation. The anticipation actually makes it harder....
We shall see. =)

mr_bellamy 08-22-2010 07:09 AM

Do we still not know if Lupin's fight with Harry at Grimmauld Place is in the movie?!?!?!?! Even if the rest of the movie is great, I will be fuming if this is not in there. I've always been upset at how much they've ignored Lupin in the movies, minus POA :(

Ga.b. 08-22-2010 08:02 AM

I totally agree with you. While Lupin had some pretty decent development in POA, he was definitely put on the back burner since. If Lupin is under developed in this film, I will be having Sirius flashbacks :(

mr_bellamy 08-22-2010 08:15 AM

I know! Not only a waste of a wonderful character, but also a waste of an unbelievably brilliant and talented actor in David Thewlis.

Luna Weasley 08-22-2010 08:40 AM

Whoa, that's one lucky person! =O

I'm really looking forward to the film. I'm looking forward to the Seven Potters, the wedding and the Hermione/Harry dance. I don't ship them, of course XD. But they're just good friends. It's so nice of Harry to cheer her up.

Overall I'm extremely excited <3.

Insane 08-22-2010 09:12 AM

Can't Wait for Deathly Hallows part 1! *tehee*

Gosh! i'm so jealous! it's so lucky for those lucky randomly picked peeps..this makes me more eager to watch it..i believe it will be a million times better than twilight!! I heard the 7 potters in the beginning is going to be super hilarious! =)

Nia 08-22-2010 09:25 AM

Omg i hope Godric's Hollow isn't too rushed... :( It's one of the best scenes in the book!

But sounds amazing, can't wait anymore! :) Those people are lucky to have seen it, but then again, if i got to decide whether i'd like to see the film now or wait until November, i'd choose not to watch it yet.
As difficult as it is to wait three more months, we'll probably miss these moments once both of the films have been released. The same thing happened with the books, we were dying to read them, but once we finished we wanted to go back to the moment when we were still living in the torturing anxiousness.

Weaslebee 08-22-2010 09:45 AM

WOW! I'm so jealous :(

The torture scene should be amazing, and the Horcrux scene will be horrible to watch.

Why does Dobby have to die? :(
More Voldie!!! :D

I love Helena Bonham Carter! She's such an amazing actress <3 :loved:

THIS IS NOT A JOKE!! Helana Bonham Carter is my great, great, great, great uncles granddaughter. I know it is VERY distant but she is their I don't know if that makes her a distant Aunty or Cousin. I know there will be the people that don't believe me but I promise :)

Victoria Lovegood 08-22-2010 10:56 AM

I wish they could do a screening like this is England. I would drop anything to go to it!
I hope that the Ron/Hermione kiss is better than the Harry/Hermione one! I'll be very disappointed if it's not.

phoenix_tears 08-22-2010 11:06 AM

Woaaah! This sounds amaaaazing! And I absolutely love the first Harry/Hermione scene :loved:

AurorPrince 08-22-2010 02:20 PM

Those people are just very LUCKY!

I have read some other reviews about the screening, and I was like, "WHY DIDN'T THEY DID IT HERE IN LONDON??"

It was very fascinating! Even though there's not much of the effects and sounds yet, I can already imagine everything and it really freaks me out!

CAN'T REALLY WAIT FOR NOVEMBER. :woot:

Well, I think that will depend on your definition of "better". Harry/Hermione's kiss is supposedly an extremely intense make-out session, following all of the really horrible things they say to Ron. It's apparently going to be very heated, very sexual, and very uncomfortable to watch.

Whereas the Ron/Hermione kiss will probably be a very quiet, sweet and subdued moment. So Harry/Hermione's will be the kind of unrealistic, super-hot mega-fantasy that never happens, whereas Ron/Hermione's will be real.

fang94 08-22-2010 05:14 PM

Could someone please tell me is the scene with harry and lupin fighting in grimmauld place included?please!!!!

joannabanana 08-22-2010 05:58 PM

Ugh I'm already dreading the Harry/Hermione Horcrux kiss...she said it looks as if they are both nude? Why is that necessary. We already get Ron is jealous, I think that one I'll have to make a bathroom run on.

I have read from people who saw the screening that that scene was omitted and they basically dont spend much time on Tonks' pregancy at all they kind of brush it aside.

Ron_Hermione 08-22-2010 06:39 PM

Does anyone know how is Hermione's reaction when Ron comes back?
And any scene between them in the film?

BlueLaceAgate 08-22-2010 06:45 PM

I have all the HP books in hardcover, and have read them quite a few times.
I enjoyed the in depth report of the above DH I sceening.
I am curious as to why David Yates and the producer David Heyman and WB decided to
have a test screening. Chicago is a good, middle of the country to get a variety of viewpoints. I hope they are able to utlilize the audiences comments to improve or
tweak the film where needed. Great report!

It says in the piece- they dance at the wedding...

HermioNay 08-22-2010 06:54 PM

This is absolutely going to be the longest 3 month wait of my life. (and that includes the last trimester of each of my 4 pregnancies lol~other moms out there will know what I mean) I read the book aloud to my husband, and I cried so hard when Dobby died I could barely get the words out. I can't imagine what it will be like seeing it on screen. From all the reports I have read, the only real disappointment I have is that they seem to have cut the Regulus Black story out, and that was such an integral part of showing Kreacher as more than a house elf who has to obey Harry, instead of wanting to obey Harry. I am not surprised though, the house elf situation was cut from all the other movies as well.

emma_granger 08-22-2010 06:55 PM

I don't want to read this! Surprise!!!

Tegan1993 08-22-2010 07:04 PM

@ Ron and Hermione
I asked someone on twitter and they told me hermiones reaction to ron coming back :)
here it is :)
*spoiler*( sort of )
When Ron came back, Hermione was first surprised and then angry at him for leaving. Harry had to hold her back. It was a bit funny. Ron explains what made him come back, how he heard Hermione's voice whisper his name and ball of light went through his heart. Hermione softens a little, but still acts angry with him.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have several sources confirming that
*SPOILER*
Ron and Hermione do not dance at the wedding however Hermione does dance with Krum as Ron watches furiously!
I personally would have loved to see Ron and Hermione dancing but I'd love to see Ron's reaction with Krum dancing with Hermione.

But someone told me in this post that Hermione and Ron dance in the movie...Well if they don't dance it would be very disappointed because we have see Ron jealous in the 4 film. And again... I don't know Iwant some romantic scenes between ron and Hermione^^

Hmmm this person who saw this didn't have very many good things to say about the movie, which I think is strange...I mean, I'm sure it's freakin' amazing!!! Anyway, I can't wait, omg I can't wait!! :D :pea:

Trust me, I understand how you feel! I have wanted then to get romantic since I read the first book!
This was an answer from someone who saw the movie in Chicago :)

"Oh yeah the Krum scene is PERFECT. Ron and Hermione are circling the punch bowl and Ron is pretending not to look at her. Krum comes up to Hermione and takes her out to dance. Ron is furiously watching them. As soon as the dance stops, one of Fleur's friends walks by and his eyes go from Hermione's straight to this other girl and he walks away and ditches Hermione."

I preferred it in the book :(
