| | 'Fantastic Beasts' film's final trailer breakdown: Grindelwald & War Looming Near
The story for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - the first installment and possibly the entirety of the trilogy - might now be slowly unfurling, mostly due to the final trailer released this Wednesday morning.
Fans have a general idea of former Hogwarts student Newt Scamander finding his way to 1926 New York City and meeting those closely involved in the American Wizarding community for the first installment, but with names like Albus Dumbledore and Grindelwald being thrown around in the features, it's starting to look like this trilogy might be making its way nearer to the first Wizarding World War, decades before Voldemort reigned supreme, and between the-then two strongest wizards in the world.
A breakdown of the final trailer reveals the first proper look at the Barebone family - Mary Lou, the wizard-hating No-Maj, and her elusive stepson, Credence, who might just be a wizard after all (and a very dark one at that). That, as well as a look at a dubious Percival Graves, and our top quartet getting closer with one another, will be discussed here. Quote:
Here we start off at night in New York City, with the Goldstein sisters looking out of their apartment window in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and then focusing on the a lit logo for 'SQUIRE'S' under which Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) stands with enchanted suitcase.
Quote:
We finally get a bit more insight into the scene shown so many times in the past few months, of MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery standing before a wizarding community in New York, staring down at Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston). President Picquery: You’ve known for 24 hours that an unregistered wizard set magical beasts loose in New York? Tina Goldstein: Yes. President Picquery: Where is this man?
And, poof, pops out Newt from his suitcase, making an unconventional and yet grand entrance before the Magical Congress of the United States of America.
Quote:
Here we meet Gnarlack the Goblin (played by Ron Perlman and some nifty CGI), owner of speakeasy The Blind Pig, where he chats with Newt and Tina about the magical creatures that escaped his suitcase (and which began the disaster around New York City circa Christmas 1926). Gnarlack: So, you're the guy with a case full of monsters, huh? Newt: News travels fast.
Quote:
You know that face your parents make when you're caught doing something you're not supposed to, and they're just thinking 'Are you REALLY trying this now?' That's Newt's look there in the third screenshot, catching one of his Nifflers in the act of stealing some jewelry.
Quote:
After the creature escape incident with Newt and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) running around town, Tina corners him, and Newt essentially voices what Harry Potter fans have been complaining about for about a year now. Tina: You wiped his memory, right? The No-Maj? Newt: The what? Tina: No-Magic. The non-wizard. Newt: Sorry, we call them Muggles.
Quote:
So, Jacob makes his way into the wilderness hiding in Newt's suitcase, and what sights he sees...
Quote:
An adult and child Graphorn! Good grief.
Quote:
What looks to be a whole lotta Nundus sitting atop a hill.
Quote:
Eddie Redmayne chatted a bit to USA Today this week about the magical creatures, including the Bowtruckles Newt loves so much, including Pickett, Titus, Finn and Jeremy. Eddie of course voiced his adoration toward his favorite of the lot, Pickett: Eddie Redmayne: "Everything about Pickett the Bowtruckle is wonderful and I am completely biased. He is probably my favorite. He is neurotic, he is slightly insecure, and he gets picked on by the other Bowtruckles. Newt has a very soft spot in his heart for him, hence he always carries him around in his top pocket and makes continuous excuses for him."
Quote:
Redmayne refers to the habitat as Newt's shed, which not only holds magical creatures, but is a Potions laboratory as well, as he explains to USA Today. Eddie Redmayne: "Newt's shed is pretty essential to him. It's where he keeps all of the paraphernalia and eclectic things that he has collected from gallivanting around the world finding fantastic creatures. It's also filled with herbs and plants that he uses to mix antidotes. In some ways, the shed is a reflection of who he is."
You also notice how Newt acts around people (awkward and sort of closed up into himself) whereas he's happy and freer around creatures? Very evident given some of the scenes shown in this trailer so far.
Quote:
Here, it seems, Newt (and the audience) sees wizard-hater Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton) for the first time, spewing her 'Second Salemers' hatred to a group of onlookers outside a NYC federal-looking building. Mary Lou: Something is stalking our city. Wreaking destruction and then disappearing without a trace. Witches live among us.
Quote:
The Goldstein sisters and Newt transfigure and charm their clothes to look a bit more glam before entering the Blind Pig speakeasy.
Quote:
This particular shot is curious... it seems to be the same type of enchanted forcefield all Harry Potter fans spotted protecting Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, even down to the amber color and flickering lights of magic creating it.
Quote:
Here we get our first proper shot of Credence (Ezra Miller) at long last. Troubled, confused, and easily manipulated by Graves. Does Credence have magic hidden somewhere in him, ready to burst? From what director David Yates told us back in December on set, it sure seems like he might, and not for the better. There might be a darkness to him that might be as much of a problem to the heroes as, well... we'll get to that soon.
Quote:
From the editing of this trailer, it seems like Graves is questioning President Picquery (his boss) and fellow Aurors about their allegiance, but we won't know until November if that's the case. However, Graves' actions in this trailer do seem to allude to him slowly turning his back on what MACUSA stands for in regards to the No-Maj community. Graves: We’ve lived in the shadows for too long. I ask all of you, who does this protect? Us or them?
Quote:
Here's a clear, fun shot of a Thunderbird for all those sorted into that Ilvermorny House.
Quote:
Looks like the sisters might be checking out the inside of Newt's shed as well.
Quote:
And here we are. In one of the previous trailers it shows President Picquery speaking to Graves, who has his own concerns about a questionable character (whom everyone was assumed was Newt). Looks like we may have just found out who that is... President Picquery: If this is related to Grindelwald’s attacks in Europe, this could mean war.
Gellert Grindelwald. A year younger than Dumbledore, Grindelwald would be in his 40s around this time as well, and undoubtedly at the height of his terrible reign around Europe. Given what rumors have said about future movies, we might be seeing Grindelwald as well as Dumbledore in the sequels.
Does this mean that we'll see the end of the first Wizarding World? Probably not, since that took place in the 1940s, and decades after Newt's adventures here, but we'll probably get a glimpse of it. This just might have gone from a misadventure of Newt and his new friends around New York City, into a global epic war about to break out.
Typical J.K. Rowling luring us into a small quaint story, just to blow it all up in our faces - and that's just how we love it.
Quote:
For all those out there who wanted a proper clear look of the deadly, serpentine Occamy, well, here you go...
Quote:
.... Just as Tina and Newt trap it in a tea kettle? It fits?! Damn.
Quote:
Well, yeah, Jacob's got an killer, in-heat Erumpent running after him, trying to mate with him, but um... at least he has protective gear on?
Quote:
Another fun glance at the scene (and jewelry) stealing Niffler, with whom Newt has a love-hate relationship.
Quote:
Suppose the team's chat with Gnarlack the Goblin at The Blind Pig didn't go down so well if Jacob's decking him in the face, with Queenie (Alison Sudol) watching.
Quote:
Rather unnerving look at a scared Tina with a wand to her neck here...
Quote:
Graves seems to be super obsessed with Newt (for whatever reason - it can't just be because he let the creatures on the loose) and so it seems he's throwing something dangerous at Newt, in a NYC Subway? Graves: I refuse to bow down any longer. Time is running out, Mr. Scamander.
Quote:
This movie sounds like it's going to be emotionally exhausting by the time we're done with it. Just to finish off on a light note (we hope), here's what might be a sweet and tender moment between Jacob and Queenie.
Well, maybe sweet. Dan Fogler did say Jacob's got a sad clown ending coming, so let's not hold our breaths here. Plus, J.K. Rowling's not a big stickler on happy endings, after all.
The question remains: if this series does give Harry Potter fans a glimpse of the battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, what on earth is Newt and company's involvement in it? What does a magizoologist have to offer to two of the strongest wizards of their time? didnt realize how this lined up with the whole Grindelwald/ Dumbledore history until now. we've been wanting JKR expand on that, maybe now she's finally got the chance to do it? maybe the fantastic beasts is a mere kick off to something even more profound? sounds great to me |
