Exclusive: SnitchSeeker interview with David Heyman, Imelda Staunton return confirmed

As we told you earlier today, SnitchSeeker had the opportunity to interview David Heyman last night about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We spoke with the producer about Rupert and Emma's kissing scene, Bill Weasley, young Dumbledore and Dolores Umbridge, among other things.

You can listen to the interview here (sorry, the Apple Store in Santa Monica was loud and hectic), or read the transcription below.

Quote:

SnitchSeeker.com: Dan Radcliffe said he wasn't present when Rupert and Emma did their kiss scene. Was that deliberate – so he wouldn't distract them?
David Heyman: No.

SS: Harry's not in the scene?
Heyman: No.

SS: So it's not like it is in the book? [Heyman shakes his head no]
Quote:

SS: Did you do anything to help Rupert and Emma calm their nerves for that scene?
Heyman: No, I think they both were quite nervous. They've worked together, they've known each other for so long, so it was a big deal. It's like kissing a really good friend yours, you'd think, "Hmmm, that's a little strange." But I think that it works really well. In a way, tenses them, which they weren't before. You want that awkwardness, and they throw themselves into it. It really works. It works fantastically.
Quote:

SS: Harry Ron and Hermione argue quite a bit while camping. How did you prepare the actors for that change in their relationship?
Heyman: Well, you know, it's interesting because the kids are growing up as actors. They have many more experiences now then they had when Christopher Columbus was working with them. They're much more mature, they've had experiences in life outside of Potter, they've had experiences acting outside of Potter. They've all had friends they've gotten along with and friends that they've fought with. And so I think they just brought much more of their own feelings and experiences to it.

One of the ways David Yates works is he really engages them. He doesn't tell them what to do, but he makes them very much a part of creating the role. For example, David has lunch with Dan Radcliffe once a week to talk about what they're doing. It takes quite a close and intimate relationship all three of them have with the director. They're too mature now to say, "Go do this," or just leave them alone. They want to engage.

It wasn't that difficult. They're grown adults … well not grown adults, they're 19-20 years old. And at that age, you've fought with your friends. So they're used to it, and people who you care about, too. They really care about each other. So in the end they were able to bring a lot of their own experiences to the table.
Quote:

SS: Since Deathly Hallows is the first time we see Bill Weasley, how will he be introduced?
Heyman: Well, we know it's his wedding. So, he's introduced at his wedding and we express it's Bill and Fleur's wedding so you know it's Bill Weasley and it's at the Weasley house. So you know pretty much who he is when you see him and Fleur. It's pretty clear in the end.
Quote:

SS: Has he been attacked by a werewolf?
Heyman: Yes he has.

SS: And how's that explained, or is it?
Heyman: It's understood.
Quote:

SS: How are you going to handle Dumbledore's backstory, as it was mainly Harry reading Rita's book?
Heyman: We have Hermione reading parts of the book and we also have a character at the wedding who talks about Dumbledore's past. There's Elphias Doge, who also has a more favorable opinion of Dumbledore. Hermione finds Rita Skeeter's book and she reads the book to them.

SS: Is there going to be an actor playing young Dumbledore?
Heyman: Yes.
Quote:

SS: When will a formal casting announcement be made?
Heyman: Eventually.
Quote:

SS: Is Imelda Staunton going to return as Umbridge?
Heyman: Yes.

SS: Did you talk to her how much more evil her character has become?
Heyman: We haven't yet, but we will. She's familiar with the book.

cherbear09 07-14-2009 10:32 PM

as excited i am to see this kiss..and im sure it will still be amazing... im really REALLY disappointed that he changed it from whats in the book ..really glad umbridge is back!!

HBP TOMORROW!!!!

Stephanie 07-14-2009 10:51 PM

Why they change that part!!?? i wanted to see Harry in that scene :(

MelissaWeasley 07-14-2009 10:57 PM

I thik the kissing scene is on the chamber of secrets because it was only r/hr and I read somewhere that they were maybe going to film something in the chamber of secrets so idk but i guess that will still be cool :D

I CAN'T WAIT FOR TOMORROW!

PigWithHair 07-14-2009 11:05 PM

The Kiss

Though I've not been thrilled at some of the changes from books to screen, this one thrills me. I think it's wonderful that Harry won't be there. I feel there's a much better chance for a more romantic scene between Ron and Hermione then.

Also, off topic I'd like to add that the films are looking vastly improved since David Yates took over the helm. I was very happy he stayed on.

hpnaiv 07-15-2009 12:11 AM

I have mixed feelings about Harry not being there. But I love the Ron and Hermione relationship so much, I think it's good they have their time alone. So I guess this change is good :)

I'm glad that Bill's wedding seems close to the book. I just wonder why they don't at least mention his engagement with Fleur in HBP - that way it'd be easier to introduce him in DH..

X-Girl 07-15-2009 12:45 AM

Poo! So not looking forward to Rupert getting all kissy-wissy with Emma on stage. <_<

But, we've got a long way ahead of us so maybe I'll ease into the idea. =/

LunaAnnPotter 07-15-2009 12:46 AM

So I guess he's not on the scene after all...I don't know what to think but I guess as long as we see the kiss it'll be ok :P

Richard_13 07-15-2009 12:57 AM

Cool! But Im just don't understand why they have to change the kissing scene!! well... :)

Ginny GL 07-15-2009 03:07 AM

There are changes in the plots I will never understand.

PadfootAndTheWolf 07-15-2009 03:27 AM

Omg things sound good so far!! :D

OrangeBubbleSnake 07-15-2009 03:53 AM

Awesome Interview, about the kissing part we have Y-E-A-R-S to get over it even if we dont like it, I personally dont mind it myself.

Yay Umbridge is back!

Felix_Wildcat 07-15-2009 09:16 AM

*sniffs* I like Harry's line..

"OI! There's a war going on here!"
*sniffs again* But I think DH is going to be awesome and slighly different from the book, which is what gave the films their flavours.

louise19 07-15-2009 12:43 PM

oh cool can not wait to see the film it is going to be great

Enrico_Dc 07-15-2009 01:04 PM

Maybe they will use the REPARO spell at the Weasley's House. :-)

We all know (because of the trailers) that in HP6 movie, The Weasleys House (aka The Burrow) was destroyed by the Death Eaters, or maybe the damage is not that big as i think...

LunaMalfoy 07-15-2009 03:09 PM

i cant wait 2 c the movie.

Padfoot7 07-15-2009 03:26 PM

That's going to be a fantastic movie. Too bad they're not sticking with how Ron and Hermione kiss. :( That would have been great to have Harry there when they did.

SnapeRules 07-16-2009 09:26 AM

I dont like Harry not being there for the kiss, but I suppose Yates wants to make the film his own.

Dark-Secrets 07-17-2009 01:41 AM

I'm still looking forward to these films....
Now I'm left wondering how they have done the kiss....... hmmm *starts thinking*

Dang, why can't they come out sooner??

GinnyW21 07-17-2009 03:23 AM

i cant wait to see how everything is done

I have to agree. I really love what David Yates has brought to the franchise and I'm SO excited to see how Deathly Hallows will turn out.

Maybe they weren't sure they'd be in DH.

averageteenx 07-18-2009 12:28 PM

Im glad shes coming back, for some reason some people aren't, and i just dont see the point. Its like the best series of films ever, why not be in the most successful film of all time?

astaroth 07-18-2009 04:29 PM

Looking forward to Hr/R kiss.... but do you know somebody, will there be the Harry/Ginny kiss too? If yes, I hope it´ll be better than their HBP kiss...

wandlove07 07-18-2009 10:42 PM

I'm rather curious myself at how you're just going to understand Bill was attacked by Fenrir, seeing as they didn't even mention he's a werewolf.

no1particular 07-19-2009 01:43 AM

Hmmm...I don't know how to judge how well they'll be able to do DH justice. I thought Yates did awesome on OoTP, but not so hot on HPB (too much Twilight-esque, blatant teenage romantic drama that became more central than the actual plot of finding memories!). The Hermione/Ron thing is important for sure, but I hope it's not as sappy as it was in the HPB film.

r33nbluebottle 07-19-2009 12:12 PM

On my... I'm really looking forward to that..... :)

averageteenx 07-20-2009 12:11 PM

I am so glad, Imelda Staunton is such a good actress.

Seanna Tyla 07-20-2009 01:51 PM

Okayy, I didn't know that.

Obviously some people don't see it like that.

Seanna Tyla 07-21-2009 01:35 PM

hmmm, quite interesting I guess?
Esp, they're gonna included another kissing scence!
Ohgosh!(:
Romantic.

Carmen Zabini 07-21-2009 02:55 PM

I didn't really like the feeling behind some of his answers. He seemed like he was being a bit short. Idk. That's just me.

I wish they stop changing things. im really upset about the end of HBP. I wanted to see that battle between the Aurors and Death Eaters...where Bill gets bit in the face..."Its understood"...Yes, a lot of things are having to be understood.

Erindipity 07-21-2009 03:20 PM

i am glad they are finally introducing bill!! i am afraid that this film will disappoint though... i REALLY hope not though

scarlet woman 07-22-2009 08:15 AM

Wow - great interview! Nice to know they include Umbridge in the movie as she is an integral part. It's a shame they didn't keep the kiss the same but maybe they felt it was so important they didn't want anything to distract from it. Oh the last film is going to be soooo sad!

margarida 07-22-2009 08:04 PM

the kissing scene is diferent?!

ohh...

Patronus Charm 07-23-2009 07:17 PM

wonderful news....

tomriddle01 07-24-2009 10:38 AM

I can't wait for this movie (even though it's so far away :P)!!! Imelda Staunton is going to be great and I can't wait for the Elphias Doge scene :D
I'm guessing the R/H kissing scene will either be in the RoR or the CoS. I think it'd be better in the CoS because it would be a nice change from the RoR where every major kiss has taken place! :P

Manal 07-24-2009 11:46 AM

there is a younger Dumbeldore , cool , who is going to have the role ?
i'm SO excited for DH , it seems it is going to be the best ;)

Simon-The-Mudblood 07-26-2009 11:07 AM

I'm really looking foward to see the ron & hermione kiss =)

HollieWeasley 07-26-2009 04:07 PM

I can't wait for this too come out, I think the R/Hm Kiss will be awesome, and its much anticipated :) x

TheMalteseMuggleborn 07-27-2009 08:11 AM

As always, it is impossible to explain a scene the way Jo does in the books and due to changes in the past (for example: S.P.E.W was never even mentioned in the films) certain scenes have to be made differently. True, I don't see why Harry couldn't be present but after all, changes have been made in HBP and still it turned out awesome. So I suggest that people chill and let the directors do their work.. after all it might turn out even better than in the books ;P

nirza moktan 07-29-2009 02:57 PM

the wedding must be awesome after description of fleur being very very very beautiful......

Spiral Ella 07-29-2009 08:55 PM

So glad I read this. I had heard that "the wedding" would be Lupin and Tonks!

But why oh why do they insisting on changing the big kisses? Harry's and Ginny's was soooo wrong. I can only imagine what this one between Ron and Hermione can be. I'll be afraid to watch.

I'm rather curious about that too since they didnt explain it at all in the hbp movie but i suppose we will just have to wait for DH. I'm not sure i can wait so long though im so excited!

MrMcGonagall 08-03-2009 10:31 AM

I'm so happy Staunton will return in DH film.
I've always thought she is a great actress and the way she portrays Professor Umbridge was just...amazing!

laura-tonks 08-03-2009 09:47 PM

Isn't anyone else upset about the change in the R/Hr kiss??!!!

They're probably going to make it all quiet and romantic like Harry and Ginny in the ROR but that's so stupid! The R/Hr kiss is this big dramatic almost cheesy (but in an amazing way!) release of the emotions that have been building up over 7 years, imagine Hermione running down the Great Hall in COS only with a kiss at the end!

I knew they would have to alter it at least slightly because they didn't include the house-elf thing but come on!! I am really angry right now GRRRRRRR!!! It's just so out of character, the whole point of their relationship at this stage is that they just need one last push to get it together, not a 'romantic' moment in a dark, damp, cold room with a decaying snake corpse in it.

Sorry, I should really stop ranting but for goodness sake! Grrrrrr...ok I think I'll go and lie down now

On a happier note, I'm so happy Imelda is coming back! :loved:

EmmaRiddle 08-04-2009 11:43 PM

^ But without the house elf reference, how else could it have been done, with Harry still there and have the same impact?

Bellatrix_Lestrange 08-13-2009 06:24 AM

I'm so Excited about the Kissing Scene and a bit dissapointed that they are not going to maintain the Kissing part as the book... I really wanted Harry to be there and become part of the "finally" new couple.

Poisonedbyyou 08-16-2009 12:15 AM

All these questions really make me want to see DH very soon! I'm curious to see exactly how the kiss scene will play out and I wonder if Dumbledore's past will be explained clearly. It worries me that they've got Hermione just reading out of Rita Skeeter's book. Hopefully it'll be thorough.

Lavender_Lily_Luna 08-16-2009 09:21 AM

I am so excited for R/Hr kiss!!! I really hope it is not a quick kiss! That would be disappointing, I want it to be different to H/G kiss in HBP!

I don't mind if Harry isn't there, because then their kiss will last shorter!
LOL it might be like the first scene ever without Harry! Haha...

I don't like Umbridge but it's great to see she's back I am looking forward to the wedding where Fleur and Viktor come back! I am excited to see Bill as well! I noticed that so many characters from other HP movies are returning in the last one! Also Rita Skeeter is aswell...
I am looking forward to see Luna's Dad and their house!

There are so many parts I can't wait for but what I am confused about is in part 1 where abouts are they going to split it? Like what would be the to be continued... sort of thing?
I recently read the book for the second time and I would love to know!

~Lavender_Lily_Luna

vijaya 08-16-2009 02:58 PM

it would be great to see R-Hr together.

remusluver21 08-16-2009 06:42 PM

Seems like it will be a great movie. I wish they would have introduced Bill and Charlie earlier in the movies. But at least Bill will be in this one finally. YAY!!:voldie1:

I am loving that Dolores is back- I loved her as the scariest professor in history-although my chemistry professor in high school could have given her some competition for scariest! ;-)

camay66 08-25-2009 03:41 AM

I'm really excited for this! People who have not read the books will probably need to then if they don't want the confusion.

Although, some don't read them because they claim that they would just be disappointed if they read them then watched the movies.

22_PotterPrincess_22 08-30-2009 01:58 PM

I'm sort of disappointed that the R/Hr kiss had to be changed but yet I knew it had to be because the S.P.E.W plot line has been removed.

But no matter what, I'll at least be happy to see them finally kiss on screen though I really hope it's longer than the H/G kiss in the HBP movie and that it's not extremely awkward. I have been waiting for this moment for almost 10 years you know!

LovegoodBroadway 08-31-2009 03:30 AM

Its just to bad that they have to change some parts:(....but I know it will be great, Just like the rest! :-D

SlytherinGirl94 08-31-2009 03:59 PM

It's great that Umbridge will be played again by Imelda Staunton. She is just perfect for the role.

This is all wonderful information, I am still not done watching the 6th movie (have seen it 12 times) but am so excited for the next two, and am so happy that they are splitting the booking into two movies. I am sad that the kiss will not be the same as what is in the book, but I was sad that Harry's kiss with Ginny was not like it was in the book but I got over it. Thank you snitchseeker.com for giving us all of this wonderful insight into the world of Harry Potter

wow, that's a good interview, but he's also keeping some things close to his vest, naturally.

bonnieginnyfan1 10-08-2009 09:37 AM

Wish the kiss scene was in the common room I mean they just had to film Harry in dention, no quidditch at that time and there you go!

It was nice in the Room of Requirment!

BUT SERIOUSLY HARRY AND GINNY'S KISS ONLY WENT FOR 3.5 SECONDS AND HARRY AND CHO'S WENT FOR 30 SECONDS! I WAS DISSAPOINTED A LOT!
