| | Excerpts from JKR interview with Girlguiding Scotland
A few days ago it was revealed that JK was one of one hundred inspirational women to be interviewed by Girlguiding Scotland. The interviews are designed to encourage girls to 'aim higher' after shocking poll results found the following; Quote:
Teenage girls revealed that 63% would rather be a topless model than a doctor or a nurse. A quarter thought lap dancing was a good profession, but only 3% aspired to be teachers. The glamour model Jordan was a role model for more 15- to 19-year-olds than the Harry Potter author.
Excerpts from Rowling's interview have been published by The Sunday Times. Of her mother, Jo says; Quote:
“She was the one who read to us when we were little, filled the house with books, loved discussing her favourite novels and never sat down without something to read, so I would have to say (she gave me) a love of literature,” says Rowling, who has two daughters, Jessica, 12, and one-year-old Mackenzie. “However, she also taught me how to make a decent Yorkshire pudding.”
JK also talks briefly about an experience as a teacher; Quote:
“I remember the laughs I had with my favourite classes. One of my best memories is being presented with flowers by 4F of St David’s in Dalkeith after our last lesson together. Neither before nor since have flowers meant so much to me, and if you’d met 4F, you’d know why.”
The full interview will be published on May 1st.

Girls nowadays seem to have lost their way. What has happened? Well the biggest problem is our obsession with looks now, even serious business women are expected to look like models and you don't just have to look good - you have to look perfect! There is nothing wrong with wanting to look your best but you can never be perfect that is just impossible! It's a shame, as who are we trying to look good for? Men have said time and time again that they like real women, not bimbos who are obsessed with how they look! (Well apart from Peter andre - but less said about him the better!) I really look up to women like JK, she is such a role model for me - if women don't buck up soon, then Emily Pankhurst completely wasted her time!

I agree...this is the biggest problem. Girls these days are faced with images of people like Jordan, Paris Hilton etc, who are glamourised beyond preportion. Every magazine you see, Jordan or Paris Hilton are likely to be in it. They're rich, skinny, in love blah blah, things that all girls aspire to be and so they see that to obtain that, they could become lapdancers, as that is the easiest way forward. It's all about getting rich quick, without the hard work. Laziness and images of women in bras and thongs attract these girls to that kind of job.

*Headwall* This is shocking. I would encourage girls to get their priorties right, and to care about how they look but in a more balanced way. Looks aren;t your life - There's so much, much, much more to a healthy and successful life. I'd rather be a science-geek or a writer, rather than a Model. I want to look gorgeous, but having that as your aim is simply ridiculous!
By the way, I'm a 13 year old Jessica too - sweet, eh? *o's Jess will be 13 soon too*
Love,
~~Jay~~

How shocking can can you get? There's nothing wrong with having Jordan as your role model but, come on, wouldn't you rather professonalize in a more honourable profession - like being a doctor, or a teacher???? Strange, and very very shocking ,as I said before, and many others said too.

It is pretty sad that girls today have so much opportunity in the work world and all they want to do is be the dumb model. I guess they don't care about themselves or how society will revile and look upon them as things to be used. How very disturbing and disappointing for the next generation.

What about dignity?.... what about self respect?... thats sad. but you know i guess not every body is the same. so all we can do is wonder why young girls are thinking like that. i KNOW i want to go some where, and i doubt that taking my shirt off and stuff is going to get me there. Go JK Rowling i so respect you!... your a true role model |

On the flipside, kind of, some girls have no choice. I know a few "dancers" who rely on the money to get themselves through college/university. The idea of women being able to obtain heights is a glass ceiling; you can see through it but can't get through. It's very hard to get an education [especially when Labour start introducing top-up fees] without getting into ridiculous debt. The government needs to do something positive to encourage people to actually have hope of getting into credible professions. As it is, they give funding/grants/loans very grudgingly when investing more would achieve more. So many people are bitter, malcontent and give up hope simply because it is so hard and the current government seems intent on only making it more difficult for people from working class backgrounds to achieve careers.

The results are quite shoking! But I can understand those girls....Of course it's a lot more easy to be a topless model then having to learn soooo much and put a lot of energy in becoming a doctor! But it still isn't right... Girls should have high aimes and wish for bright careers, not end up like the ones from Pink's "stupid girls"!
