Emma Watson: "My biggest fear is getting stereotyped."

The Times of India has a new interview with Emma Watson in which she discusses her role in the Potter films as Hermione and how that may affect her career in the future.

Note: The article quotes Emma swearing. However the profanity does not appear in the original newspaper article (which can be viewed here.)

Quote:

"My biggest fear is getting stereotyped. I want to do other things. I would hate to have another actress in the role (of Hermione). There is so much of me in her. Of course, JK Rowling wrote the character, but, in film terms, I had a part in creating her".
Quote:

"I am very careful to separate the two — there is Hermione, there is Emma. There is a professional life and a private life. I never mix the two."

EDIT: A scan of the article can be seen here courtesy of The Emma Watson Forums.

1st to post whooot whoot!!

Its great to see that shes trying to keep her life in order! It shows how intelligent she is!

It shows that she wants to continue as Hermiony and that she sees herself in the role!

AvrilPotterFan 09-12-2005 07:01 PM

I can't help but feel bad for her. I couldn't see anyone playing Hermione either because she plays her so well. I don't blame her for wanting to get into new things other than Harry Potter, but it will be weird if there was just some odd time that she didn't play Hermione. It's otay emma! :sorcerer:

Lissydove 09-12-2005 07:04 PM

It is very hard when an actor gets well know for a certain role. I hope that she is able to transcend this without giving up Hermione. I'd like to see her go on and do more. I'm sure she has the talent to succeed.

EmmaRiddle 09-12-2005 07:16 PM

No, she didn't swear. Someone took liberties with the online translation. The genuine newspaper article doesn't mention any profanities.

hpfan5 09-12-2005 07:16 PM

that's pretty funny she used the f word in an interview.

Tao 09-12-2005 07:18 PM

Dang. The F word! LOL I keep forgetting that not everyone thinks 15 year olds shouldn't be using that sort of language... My mother would've smacked me had I used that kind of language. But then that's me as an American talking. Heh.

That said, while it seems shakey that she doesn't want to be identified as Hermione Granger, she made me feel good that she can't imagine anyone else in the role.

I honestly think today people aren't as bad with identifing one person with one role. I mean, I joke about it, but I can surely tell the difference, and I think that's with everyone. Especially if we see them in other roles while we're watching them in other roles. You begin to be able to seperate the reel from the real.

Yo,shes as smart as hermione

EmmaRiddle 09-12-2005 07:29 PM

Guys, she didn't swear. Read the original article. The online version is different to the one run in the newspaper.

It's so annoying when online sites edit the real thing. I mean, what did they want her to seem like? Just because many teenagers may be prone to say the word, doesn't mean she is too. If she wants to use it, fine, she can because it's her tongue, she can say whatever she wants. But it's wrong wrong wrong to add things to what someone said.

SiriuslyInLove 09-12-2005 07:53 PM

i think emma is at a very disadvantegous position. I mean seeing she's never done any movie other than HP (unlike Tom Felton, Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint) it's harder for us to imagine her as something other than good ol' Herms.

I'm not that into emma though she seems very...i dunno, uptight. but that's probably just me, myself and i.

we were debating in the emma-watson.forum if that was a real article bcoz of the "F" word, it is good to know now that she never said that, I know it is not a big deal to say the "F" word but I think with the nice image that she has I was doubting that the "F" word was part of her comments.

Tao 09-12-2005 08:04 PM

That's weird. Why would the online version us quotes with the F word included but the newspaper edition not do that? LOL That's a bit weird.

Yeah. It's really weird. The newspaper version appears to be the full one with the online being the edited.

hermionegranger12 09-12-2005 08:11 PM

Yeah right, like Emma Watson would swear! I dont believe that!

Tao 09-12-2005 08:11 PM

The whole thing is actually quite weird. The online article goes into a different direction then the scanned article. The scanned goes on to talk about Emma while the online article goes a little bit more into the sterotyping. Maybe Emma did use the F word and the online article included it while the newspaper one didn't. *shrugs*

Dean_Thomas 09-12-2005 08:18 PM

I hate when people do that, adding words to people's mouth. It's that kind of thing that subtlely tarnishes a name. I don't think she did say it, because she knows it would get published. She may have said "effed" up and that's just how they wrote it.

I understand what she means, especially if everyone goes through all seven. It'll be hard to think of her as anything else, but I'm sure she'll be able to manage it.

Dan crazy 09-12-2005 08:34 PM

Emmy? Swear?! I don't think so! Not the Emma I know!!!!! She wouldn't dare!!!!!!!

Madame_Tonks 09-12-2005 08:40 PM

Swearing or not swearing aside... Interesting article. I always thought she'd be the one freaking out about stereotyping because of things she's said in the past. I'd be more worried about that if I was Dan Radcliffe. Either way these kids are too young to worry about stereotyping... they have a huge life ahead with more acting possibilities.

L.a.m.b 09-12-2005 08:47 PM

she sweared!????? all i have 2 say about emma is that she change alot and i lost respect for her a while ago she so...... well i guess it isnt her flaut the director in the 3 movie screw up her character by honestly why would u swear!? jezze cant she keep in her tounge properly i mean i say the f word all the time wit h my friends but iam not the 1 who is being interview and having it out in public because thats just plain embrassing !!!! i feel bad for her but watever if she wants 2 make her self look like a unclassy fool! thats up toally 2 her but i admire how she s concern about her character being sterotyped that's great she worried about that!!!! but what are u trying 2 be all conterversal ?!!!!! all 'like omg i use the f word'! god!!!

Hermionespell 09-12-2005 08:54 PM

That really shows that she'll try her hardest to stay on with the films. I like that because, even with the differences between book and movie, Emma is the only Hermione I can see now...well, at least for the movies ;)

OtterySt.Catchpole 09-12-2005 09:03 PM

Ottery is...crazy for Ems...*smoochies* The best Admin *winks cheekily*

Ottery: You know what my biggest fear is Teddy?
Teddy: Yeah...your Mom finding out...*smacks*
Ottery: No. Okay, my second biggest fear. It's that people will actually start thinking about what they're saying before they say those things.
Stereotype, she's a stereotype of your typical teenage girl pfft.

Teddy: Careful all the stereotypical teenage fangirls on SS will jump you.
Ottery: You say that like it's a bad thing. *winks cheekily at Ems*

*alohamora* 09-12-2005 09:04 PM

Huh. Well, you know, if she takes that other role in Airborne, she is going to get even MORE stereotyped. That Kate girl is a know it all, too... Ooh we can all tell that Emma put a lot of herself in the role of Hermione. Note the pinkness in all of her Hermione clothes ;) just kidding :)
