Emma Watson cast in Napoleon and Betsy

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Emma Watson has been cast in the period drama Napoleon and Betsy, in which she will play Betsy Balcombe, a young English girl who has become French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's object of affection during the end of his life on the island of St. Helena. The role was originally given to actress Scarlett Johansson (who is still producing the film), but she had to step down for a younger actress to play the character.

As Emma begins work for the Deathly Hallows films February 2009, the article states that she hopes to film Napoleon and Betsy this fall.

Well, that's interesting. Good for her!

werewolfinlove 04-18-2008 05:55 AM

Go Emma!

Maxilocks 04-18-2008 06:00 AM

Emma is finally reaching for the horizons I hoped she would reach for. I'm really glad she's doing the role, it will bring another hint of much-needed versatility to her acting career. Ballet Shoes was an excellent choice of hers, too.

Looking forward to more news on this. =)

Good for her! Go Emma! I'm happy for her that she's getting offers, and this sounds like a major film too in a very serious role. That's very exciting and wonderful for her! She's definitely developing as an actress!

Hopefully the other Potter actors (Rupert, especially!) will receive offers after HP because they all are very talented and have great potential. Matt Lewis, Bonnie, Tom all come to mind!

Shannon :hello:

Ginevra 04-18-2008 06:33 AM

I really want to see her in other films than Harry Potter and Ballet Shoes. Beause she is a very good actress. Much better than Scarlett Johansson, if you ask me.

EmmaRiddle 04-18-2008 10:19 AM

So that's 2 projects she has lined up. And Dan has Equus. Wonder what Rupert will be doing...

Wayfarer 04-18-2008 10:33 AM

Way to go Emma. Considering Napolean's short stature it will be interesting to see who they cast for his role. Can Danny DeVito pull off a French accent? Good luck Emma as you work on your expanding career.

ReneeWeasley 04-18-2008 10:41 AM

That is cool. I look forward to seeing it.

RedheadQueen 04-18-2008 04:00 PM

Emma said in several interviews she was going to take time off from acting to focus on studying, I guess ignoring her natural talent proved to be harder than she expected!! Go EMMA!!! You are going to do GREAT!

Ginny GL 04-18-2008 05:49 PM

Great for her!

Hope I get to see the film.

Renate 04-18-2008 05:59 PM

Good for her. She'll do excellently I'm sure. She is an amazing actress.

hpluvr037 04-19-2008 01:31 AM

Cool! Hopefully she'll develop her acting skills with romantic scenes. She'll need to be good with that for DH. (Yeah Ron/Hermione!)

Beth2310 04-19-2008 01:50 AM

Glad shes steping up! Go Emma!

Cassirin 04-19-2008 02:08 AM

It's definitely a step up and a serious role, but I'm not sure it could be considered a romance. Apparently, Betsy is a young daughter of the family who put Napoleon up during his exile to the island of St. Helena at the end of his life. She was a true friend to him at the end of his life, and there were some really playful and cute anecdotes I found on line. But ultimately, she was 13, and he was in his late 40s.

Emma C.D. Watson 04-19-2008 03:31 AM

:gryff:
can someone post the link or has anybody have a clue what is this napoleon/betsy thing abt?i was under the impression they were more than friends...fr wht i read...is emma gonna play a 14 yr old?and oh why,did they even cast scarlett??she's wayy too old for a 14 yr old..i hope em pulls thru this deal.many sites, imdb too, confirmed her role in this drama.em was good in b.shoes.but this is gonna b quite hard.plus it's a french setting..:hermy:

Shopgirl3876 04-19-2008 03:53 AM

h/g ship lover 04-19-2008 03:16 PM

That's really good for her!! Hope it all goes well for her!!

Hermionespell 04-19-2008 03:51 PM

Sounds fantastic! It sounds like a movie that it'd be interesting to see.

Cassirin 04-19-2008 05:42 PM

I think it's kind of silly that Scar-Jo is too old for the part when she's only a few years older than Emma, but Emma does look young for her age. It'll probably be easier for her to pull off a young teenager. I guess if you think on it, though, Scarlett played someone that age when she was in The Other Boleyn Girl (according to the book, at least).

Chocolate Frog 04-19-2008 07:02 PM

Sounds great!!!

scarlet woman 04-19-2008 10:01 PM

Hermione Granger101 04-19-2008 10:10 PM

Details about the film are sketchy, although there's lots of speculation. No-one's sure how the story will be adapted for the screen.

Well, Emma was born in France ;)

Yes, after HP. Between now and then she has time to do other projects. She plans to go to university after finishing Deathly Hallows.

Quote:

How does she have the time???
Easily; Half-Blood Prince finishes next month. After that she has exams. Then she finishes school completely. She's doing an animated film in the summer but Deathly Hallows doesn't go into production until February '09. This will be shot between those two projects.

Mari of the Ocean 04-20-2008 12:59 AM

wow that's awesome!

Mrs_Molly_Weasley 04-20-2008 02:08 PM

Aw that sounds like a really good romance

potterfan19 04-20-2008 07:02 PM

I always think it's strange seeing the actors in other movies. But I'm still glad she got the role. She'll do a great job.

dancerbookl 04-21-2008 12:09 AM

She took Scarlette's place. I wonder what her biggest fan says ( that's dan)

harrys_other_broom 04-21-2008 02:26 AM

wow i guess she found the role she wanted
