Post Eddie Redmayne talks Newt Scamander's coat in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Newt Scamander's blue greatcoat in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them became so famous that even Daniel Radcliffe commented on it, so Pottermore went to working out the story behind the petrol-colored coat Eddie Redmayne wears in the first installment of the film series.

Oscar winners Redmayne and costume designer Colleen Atwood explained how Scamander fits with the coat - figuratively and literally - and exactly how many replicas of the piece was created for the film, set in 1926 New York City.

Quote:
Eddie Redmayne: ‘It’s interesting, my costume, because one of the main routes into this character is the way he moves. With the tightness at the top of that coat, Newt’s a compact kind of guy, especially when you think about all the vials and magic he can fit in that coat. The trousers are slightly too short for him too, which works for the way I move as him.’

‘And it’s the 1920s. I love the whole look of that era.’
Quote:
Colleen Atwood: ‘I made Eddie’s coat from some fabric I’d had around for years, from a play I did,’ Colleen says, on set between fittings. ‘I’d been hoarding it and I dyed it that colour for Newt.’

‘I’d say it’s a dark peacock blue. Or technically, in fashion, we’d call it petrol. I knew from the script that Newt is true to the sky and the earth and land, and that’s what I depicted in the colours of his costume.

'The coat is a 1920s shape, in that it’s a bit ill-fitting but with a slightly modern silhouette. I have 12 duplicates. Yes, I’ve got a dozen of Newt’s coats. He has to wear it a lot.’
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's first installment, written by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, hits theaters in November.

First of all Eddie Redmayne is amazing and I'm excited to see him play Newt. Especially seeing the photo and seeing him kind of "move" as Newt.

Second of all, that coat is absolutely bueatiful and I want like seven! Not seven of his coats, but like seven like that. Like the same design.... I'm going to stop now before this gets awkward.
