Discussion thread: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
The penultimate film of the Harry Potter franchise, Deathly Hallows: Part I, is now officially in theatres - both conventional and IMAX - around the world. We've opened this thread as a discussion board for those who have seen the movie, and would like to discuss it with other members. Please remember to respect one another's opinions, follow the forum and site rules, and avoid getting into arguments/flamewars. For more discussions of the film, please visit Ollivander's Wand Shop where you'll see many more topics!
For those interested, SnitchSeeker's review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I can be read here; the first official trailer, for those feeling a bit nostalgic, can be viewed below.
We will have box office numbers for this weekend's release - already rumoured to break records - by late Sunday. For now, have fun, cry and laugh over the movie, show a great deal of love for Rupert Grint being fabulous as Ron Weasley (we're not biased), and overall, do enjoy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. We certainly did. If you didn't like the movie, or parts of it, you can discuss that, too, please! It doesn't have to be all glowing reviews here; the greater the difference of opinions, the better.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released November 19, 2010, and July 15, 2011. Click on the banner below to order tickets for Part I, out now, at Fandango. Tickets are also on sale now in the UK; head over to the Harry Potter official UK Facebook for more information.
Despite there are a lot of important things that they didn't put it in the movie I still LOVED it
It was amazing. I'd said that David Yates did his homework really well
The seven potters scene was epic. I was like laughing hard when I saw Harry with bra Fred and George were sooo hilarious here
The burrow scene when Lupin back with injured George. I almost crying there. I couldn't imagined what will I do when I saw the second part when Fred died
The MOM scene it almost like the book. I loveeeeeddddd it
The Dobby part..Need I say more??I cried like a baby
Saw it yesterday and yes it's great and kept in line with the book pretty much.
But i cried nearly the whole time (which is reaally unusual for me^^ i'm not that emotional type) because in the beginning harry looks into the closet where everything began and there stands this token (remember the 1.HP film?) and aaah i can't believe that it was 10 years ago... And i really hoped that Hedwig hadn't to die in the film And then Dobby...
its time to choose between what is right and what is easy
after seeing the movie again i have to add to my preview posting, which is to say one thing that i didnt really absorb the first time was that while they are camping and on the run .. to find the horcruxes .. they dont even talk about where or what the others could be..which i find a little odd since that is why they are on the run.. but again this isnt a huge deal just something i found kind of funny
still loved the movie the second time around and i cant wait to see it again !
What everyone seems to forget, and which I didn't like about the movie, is the fact that wormtail didn't die. Normally he would have shown remorse for his treachery towards harry's parents and would have died by the silver hand Voldemort had given him, because of that remorse...
I missed that tho,but it was overall a good movie, felt really different seeing no Hogwarts.

wormtail's death is kept for the final part.. im sure he'll be killed in same way but in battle of hogwarts
So brilliant! It was amazing; I saw it at 12:01 on Friday morning, and then proceeded to see it after school on Friday. And then I'm going again tomorrow
But it was great; slightly fast-paced, but I feel like that fit with the book. It was really like a snapshot of everything they did instead of going to Hogwarts.
The direction, acting, and cinematography were brilliant though, along with the locations and costumes.
I think on a whole, it was one of the best movies. Congrats to everyone that worked so very hard on it. We, the fans, appreciate it immensely.
indeed it's a great movie.
I entered it twice it was slightly fast-paced yes espicially the parts when harry's mind in connected to voldemort's , i think that if i belonged to the falks who didn't read the book i would be confused a lillte i think that an important part such as the harry's farewell to the Dursley's should been mentioned because i did really like that part in the book .
However the emotions in the movie were great , and that dance was amazin it was all amazing , one thing i liked was the humor in the movie it's not completely dark though .
Hermoiny's screams when with bellatrix was awesome I almost cried
Great movie , don't know what do u think guys but i feel that that the next part we are waiting for is the last Harry Potter THING we will be waiting for :S
I just have to say, I LOVED THAT MOVIE!!! And that's truly a compliment because I haven't loved a Harry Potter movie this much since Goblet of Fire, especially not after watching it for the first time. I went to see it at midnight, and I'm so happy to say that it was the first movie I ever went to the midnight showing of. It was incredible, splitting it into 2 movies was an amazing idea. It was so cute sometimes, especially the dance between Harry and Hermione! OMG. Ron was hilarious, as usual. I love Rupert Grint . And I've been wanting to talk about it to everyone but nobody else has seen it! AAAHHHH!! I'm going to see it again tomorrow for my friend's birthday and I couldn't be more excited! <3
The movie was awesome. I think it was the best Harry Potter movie by far, and I think the second one is going to be even better. It's crazy how well they make these movies, because even though I've read the book a million times, I was still finding myself saying "No Ron! Don't leave!" and things like that. I'm going to see it again in a few hours, and I am beyond stoked.
please temme i havent watched the film yet..
Does harry says to Ron after he destroys the locket that hermione is like her sister??
no, and i was kinda' disappointed that kloves/yates didn't include this. but, it is obvious they want to always keep those who are not familiar with the book story, guessing about their relationship. matter of fact, i read a canadian review in which the writer described it as a love triangle. ugh.
Mr. Unicorn: Kim's daughter: Jenn's sister : MILKSHAKES: Lita Daley: The Sun: Its so Fluffy!

I think as the scene was fading away Harry quitely mentioned this, maybe it was hard to hear because he whispered it, or maybe I just imagined it in my head. But I will see it on Thursday again, so I will listen more carefully
I've seen the movie twice, once on a bad screen that took some of my joy away, and 2nd on a bigger screen, better sound, and more fun with a bigger audience. I haven't read book 7, so I'll draw my points on the film alone:
I loved it from beginning to end. I did not care about the pacing. I love the trio and they can take their sweet time for all i care.
the cons-
I wish ron was more panicky in the cellar
I thought when H and Hr disapparated from Godrick's Hallow it could have been clearer. It just looked like a puff of smoke.
I wished Bellatrix had more screen time.
Pros-
Loved the Hr & H dance. Only the cynical can't see that harry was trying to cheer up his friend.
Loved Rupert's and Emma's performance.
Soundtrack was beautiful.
Glad Hermione had carried the load. Emma did a great job here.
Loved the Ministry scene.
Bellatrix's torture of Hr was bone chilling.

I've seen it twice, and i swear i didn't hear it. But, if you do, I'll stand corrected

OMG! I loved it! I thought it was the best adaption from the book and the acting was a whole lot better than previous films. I don't know if i would say it is my favorite, but it was defintely good! Goblet of Fire is probably my favorite. The best scenes for me were:
1. 7 Potters -Fred and George were hilarious
2. The wedding -loved the intensity
3. Ministry of Magic -so well acted!
4. Godrics Hollows and Bathilda -she was soo creepy!
5. Snatchers scene -holding my breath the whole time!
6. Malfoy Manor -my fav part from the book. (Wish i heard Bella scream Crucio)
7. Finally, Dobbys death -so sad and heartfelt. Cryed my eyes out.
the scene with Hermione obliviating her parents minds - would have liked an auditory mention of it though
dobby & kreacher bring mundungus back
george sneaking up on Harry & Ginny's kiss
Ron's moodiness
the Doe/Sword of Gryffindor scene
The wedding set up - very cute wedding!
Crappies:
The scene when Ron comes back was supposed to be MORE EMOTIONAL. I wanted that sheild to pop up keeping Hermione away - would have been more impactful
Also, they changed the dialogue about the diluminator which really took away from the friendship development - Harry is supposed to say "Dumbledor knew you would want to come back" not Ron!
How little of hogwarts/outside world we saw. No potter watch, WHAT?!
I think those are the big ones. Overall I like the movie a lot but they had so much to cut/shorten and it makes me sad! That's what I get for re-reading the book right before I went to see the movie!

I thought the dance scene actually definitively answered the triangle question for me. Hermione obviously from the look on her face at the end of it still missed Ron. It's easy to have him say "She's like my sister". Harry in HBP told Dumbledore they were just friends. I think they did a good job of showing it.
I also think that by destroying the locket Ron was also destroying all his fears and doubts and that afterwards didn't need the reassurance from Harry that it wasn't true.
I cried, cried, cried when Dobby died! I thought that scene was perfect.
I loved the movie! There were obviously things that I didn't like in it -- things omitted or added in comparison to the [amaaazing] book -- but overall I think all involved did a very respectable job! The actors' performances were completely stunning. Just like the other HP films (at least for the most part), every bit of acting was totally 100% believable. It makes me very happy to say that I could easily imagine that it was real as I was watching the movie!!! (That's one of the things I love most about HP, books and movies alike.) The direction, screenwriting, everything was stellar, except for just a couple places where I wish they'd put in the *exact* quotes from the book...but actually, in a lot of scenes, they did pull word-for-word quotes from the book, so I was pretty happy about that.
There were a couple of main plot points that I didn't find that satisfied, but I'm hoping HP7p2 will tie up those loose ends.. Otherwise the people who just watch the movies and haven't read the books will probably find the story a bit lacking. (Then again, without the books, I can't imagine many people would get the entire story anyway, from all the missing information they had to cut from the previous movies...)
Overall, I give HP7p1 five stars out of five!!!

OK...so....I'm going to go against the grain and list all cons for my little snippet:
1-I am one of those who DOES think the Harry/Hermione dance was out of place and not needed.
2-Nowhere near enough time spent on ANY of the following: the Dursley's goodbye, the 7 Potters, the wedding (where the heck was Krum, and what was Madame Maxime doing there?!?!?!), Scrimgeour's meeting with the Trio, Grimmauld Place as a whole, Kreacher, Mad-Eye's death, Tonks and Lupin's relationship, or anything in Godric's Hollow.
3-I'm excruciatingly upset that Lupin's confrontation with Harry at Grimmauld place was left out. Ditto with Harry finding the torn letter in Sirius's room.
5-Nobody seemed THAT upset over George's ear. It was almost like the Black Knight in Monty Phyton, "It's just a flesh wound!"
4-Leaving out Ted and Andromeda Tonks was a misfire. I swear, these films have turned Tonks into almost a Mary Sue-type character. No delving into her Metamorphmagus powers, no delving into her relationship with Lupin, with Bellatrix, nothing.
5-What in the world is the deal with Wormtail? And where is Dean?
6-Do not get me started on how badly the "torture" scene in Malfoy Manor went over. It was nowhere near as chilling as it was in the book, and I almost felt like there was no sense of urgency. A little "Crucio" from Bellatrix would have been fantastic. Not seeing Ron completely lose it over hearing Hermione screaming was heartbreaking, because the dance scene (and the Horcrux scene) gave LOTS of ammunition to H/Hr shippers.
7-Nowhere near enough Grindelwald, old AND young! I almost saw no point in including him in the storyline.
8-NO POTTERWATCH!
9-Hagrid and Harry going through Muggle London facing off with the Death Eater was a little trite and hackneyed.
10-I was actually really upset that we didn't get to see Voldemort in Godric's Hollow thinking of the time he killed the Potters. Considering the continually shorter shrift they've been getting in the storylines, I expected more.
11-Why bring up Dumbledore's past if you're not going to delve into it? I can only hope Aberforth will fill in the blanks come part II.
I may be in an incredibly small minority here, but I personally would not have had a problem with the movie actually being split into THREE parts, as the Lord of the Rings was. I thought the pace lagged in lots of places, and overall I did leave feeling somewhat underwhelmed. This was the first time I have ever sat through a Potter film and actually thought "Is it almost over yet?" Yes, I know that sounds incongruous when I say I would've wanted a Part III added on, but if the action and characters interest you enough, the time flies by and you're left exhilerated. I was left....mutely ambivalent.
^I really agree with splitting the movie into three parts. There is SO much information in the books, and this being the last one, I feel like they should have tried to hit everything they could. I was upset at the amount of stuff left out, even if it was little, it was still something that made the book a whole.

I disagree with most of the points
1- I liked it. Mostly because you can tell Hermione loves Ron at the end.
2- Why was Madame Maxime there? She was Fleur's headmistress and Hagrid's girlfriend.
3- So you basically wanted Lupin to look a jerk like he did the book for wanting to leave his pregnant wife? I'm glad they left that out.
5- What?! They looked very upset, especially Fred.
4- You don't know what "Mary Sue" means.
6- I thought the Malfoy Manor scene was great Crucio is hard to do and explain and have it come across as real.
8- Didn't miss it.
Things I loved:
- Snape in the beginning. Oh, all the disgust and pain behind those dark eyes!
- Tom Felton as Draco; he nailed the Malfoy Manor scene.
- George interrupting Harry and Ginny's kiss. SO funny!
- Dobby
- Grayback being able to smell them but not see them. Freaky!
- Godric's Hollow was very well done.
Things that bugged me a bit:
- They cut Professor Black's portrait from the movies, so I wonder how they will rationalize Snape finding the trio in the Forest of Dean. I'm guessing they'll say Aberforth was watching form the mirror and told him, but then he'd have to know Snape's true loyalties...and I thought no one was supposed to know that?
- Harry and Hermione dancing in the tent was awkward. That Harry never told Ron that Hermione was like his sister made it moreso. I feel those scenes could be misinterpreted by those who haven't read the books.
- Kreacher scene! All wrong
- Minor, but I wanted Hermione to act more out of control when Ron returned.

Reason: my spelling is attrocious.
I love the movie! It remained faithful to the book indeed! what disturbs me that some critics say that the movie is not for kids and too much violence. well, my opinion is that the last book, If they will read it is not told in a children's perspective. But it doesnt matter coz the movie rocks and it is now breakin' records!
