Dan Radcliffe to star in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying? (UPDATED)

It has been announced that Daniel Radcliffe's first acting venture after the end of the Harry Potter series next year may be a revival of the 1961 musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway, reports Variety.

Quote:

Daniel Radcliffe will head the cast of an upcoming New York reading of 1961 tuner "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," marking the first musical turn for the "Harry Potter" star.

Producers Broadway Across America, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are test driving the project for a potential Rialto revival.
Dan is the only actor so far to be cast in the musical:

Quote:

While producers could not be reached for confirmation, the reading is scheduled for December, with no other cast so far in place. Sources said plans for the production will be worked out based on the success of the reading.
A summary of the musical can be read below:

Quote:

"How to Succeed" chronicles the rise of a crafty window cleaner as he follows the advice of a self-help manual to connive his way up through the ranks of the World Wide Wickets Co. and get the girl in the process.
More on the plot can be read here.

We will have much more on this, including when Dan will begin rehearsals and when the production itself will start in New York (assuming the read-through is successful and the musical will be produced), so stay tuned.

UPDATE: We have spoken to Dan's publicist, who has stated that Dan is currently looking through a few potential projects, including this musical. However, nothing has been confirmed, in terms of commitments to anything. More news to come soon.

wow! Am i right in thinking that this is the musical that set Barbra Streisand on the road to super stardom?

Ginny GL 10-09-2009 03:46 AM

I'd love it to be a film, as Broadway is not an easy visit for me.

bonnieginnyfan1 10-09-2009 05:12 AM

Wow Dan is going to be in a musical!

I've never been to Oklahoma but I'd love to go to Broadway!

Wait what? Dan in a musical? Can the boy even sing? :gasp:

I mean in a movie version they could always redub your singing like they did with Audrey Hepburn in "My fair lady" but not on Broadway ... *lines up to buy tomatoes* j/k. I have to admit that boy's got guts when it comes to his career he's always out on a limb first equus now this?

I am shocked and flabbergasted  but honestly, it would be fun to watch. I hope he can sing and that they do go through with it. It would be fun to see Dan on Broadway. Maybe he could do I don't know Oklahoma next or something ...

:music: Oooooooooooooooooooooooooklahoma where the wind comes rushing down the plains ... :music:

Dan on the other hand is already a super star. But way to go Dan, congratulations!

iwantorlando05 10-09-2009 07:51 AM

Oh AWESOME!! I can't wait to see it!! I thought Dan was going to do Journey is the Destination after he finished Potter, but it's nice to see he's stepping outside his box and doing a musical! Of course, he kind of already did that with Equus. It takes balls to appear naked in front of thousands of people (no pun intended).

I wish Dan the best and I can't wait to see it!!! :D

Dan said in an interview recently that he started taking singing and dancing lessons around the time he started Equus on Broadway. There's also video of him singing during a little parody of Equus. His voice is okay, but with voice lessons it's probably even better now.

JohnRossRotterdam 10-09-2009 09:51 AM

That's very interesting. Has he ever had any singing lessons?

But congrats Dan with this role!!

laura-tonks 10-09-2009 09:57 AM

Dan in a musical?

I can't take that image seriously! I hope it does well and transfers to London, I never saw him in Equus and would love to see him act live :D

Patronus Charm 10-09-2009 11:44 AM

I strongly imagine he wouldnt have been cast unless he could sing......

Anne Daphne Peverell 10-09-2009 12:04 PM

I think it's going to look very cool and Dan will look awesome (:

He sang for Gypsy of the Year while doing Equus.

prickles 10-09-2009 12:38 PM

French_December 10-09-2009 12:45 PM

That's great because he said he wanted to do a musical, but does he even have the time to do this?

coppertopchopperhopp 10-09-2009 12:52 PM

Congratulations to Da on this new venture. I hope it goes well.
perhaps he is focusing on theatre work instead of looking for a Hollywood blockbuster?

Erindipity 10-09-2009 02:08 PM

Oooo... a musically inclined Harry Potter star?! Me likey!

I must whole heart-ally agree. Dan would never have been cast in a musical unless he could sing well. Unless of course we're talking about what happens in the plot of the "Producers" :dobdance:

Seriously Dan, if he can sing, will be able to pull it off!!!!!!

aleja 10-09-2009 03:19 PM

musical = singing...hehe

This would be after DH. Then he has all the time in the world (barring publicity commitments).

phoenix_tears 10-09-2009 06:30 PM

Really interesting! Good luck Dan.

BonnieGinnyfan 10-09-2009 06:53 PM

OHHH!That's great!

Anum 10-09-2009 09:02 PM

Go Dan!!

Padfoot7 10-09-2009 09:05 PM

Hm... Dan in a musical? I'd like to see that. Just from his voice when he talks, I'm not sure how nice it would be to hear him sing, but I'm sure if he's not good enough, he wouldn't have the part. :) It's great to see that he's got guts, like a real Gryffindor!

sparkles2shine 10-09-2009 10:40 PM

Dan in a musical? Godh, I didn't even know he could sing that well. Great going Dan!!!

R-Luchy~W*7*PG~ 10-10-2009 12:48 AM

Oh,a musical.. I hope he will success in it..

JTuck 10-10-2009 04:29 AM

Sounds interesting...I don't know if dan can sing though

finfin91 10-10-2009 05:30 AM

Well, I may have to return to NYC to see that Broadway show as well. Saw Equus and it was great.

ilytomfelton 10-10-2009 10:48 AM

i hate living so far away :(

atergal 10-10-2009 01:43 PM

OMG thats so cool

surdan 10-10-2009 05:13 PM

He's a horrible singer..if anyone has doubts watch his scene in december boys or hear him sing happy birthday to Jo at the HP five premier...if he takes this role he'll need extensive training. Won't be something easy at all but he's a hardworking guy!!!

jain 10-10-2009 09:21 PM

Didn't we learn any thing from Dan's time in Equus? When it was first announced that he was taking the role of Strang, i'm sure i wasn't the only doubting thomas. Not because i didn't think Dan wasn't a good actor, but because the disicplines of the stage is so much different to that of film. I was proven wrong, as was a great many people. What it showed us was that Dan prepared and prepared hard. He didn't just turn up for the 'gig', thinking his role of Harry would carry him through. Dan has been having singing lessons for over 12 months now, and should this part take off, i'm convinced Dan will continue to put in the work to make sure he can give it his all. I' m sure Dan won't sound like Domingo, or Sinartra, but, think of the likes of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan or even Rex Harrison in 'My Fair Lady'. Voices don't have to be beautiful, but tuneful, in time and inteprative.

emily2013 10-10-2009 11:59 PM

I really want to go see him sometime soon!!

PotterGirl714 10-11-2009 01:52 AM

Good luck dan!

No. She began her broadway career in I CAN GET IT FOR YOU AT WHOLESALE. Matthew Broderick won a TONY for his performance in the revival.

princess of*hp* 10-12-2009 02:30 AM

He should SO do this! Then, maybe I could go see him in NYC and hear his American accent. :P

GinnyW21 10-13-2009 03:32 AM

interesting

bonnietoo 10-13-2009 04:39 AM

voice not as important as acting

Robert Morse, the actor who first starred in How to Succeed did not need an amazing voice for the role. He sings well enough - check out clips on Youtube, but watch the amusing facial expressions, and acting which is hilarious at times. We've heard about and seen Dan's high energy and it would definitely add to the performance.

What I think will be interesting is seeing Dan portray an American in a very culturally American play. I suppose they could change the premise, that he uses the book to get ahead specifically because he is a foreigner.

carolyn jinn 10-16-2009 05:17 AM

Equus never came to Australia, sooooooooo Dan doing a musical will probably result the same. It (and Dan staring in it) won't come either (chances are lowww) so I won't get to see it.:(

Zodiac524 10-22-2009 10:51 PM

sounds interesting
good luck to him
