Summary:
Cinesite have produced an article and slideshow detailing exactly how they managed to create the special effects for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. They will also be working on the next film, Goblet of Fire.

Article:

Cinesite reveal secrets behind PoA visual effects

Cinesite, a company which does visual/special effects for films, has come up with this article detailing how they managed to perfect the look of Hogwarts in Prisoner of Azkaban. They also have a small slideshow and a set of images explaining the effects used. Cinesite will also be doing the visual effects for the eagerly awaited fourth Potter film, Goblet of Fire.

Quote:
Cinesite, as the main supplier of effects for Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, completed 167 digital effects shots, as well as building all the models and Directing the model unit.  Work was begun on the digital effects in April 2003 and completed in April 2004.

Quote:
The huge 1/24 scale model of the Hogwarts exterior was expanded by around 40%. Under the Production Design of Stuart Craig and Model Unit Art Direction of Gary Tomkins Hogwarts evolved, with new features including a clock  tower, clock tower courtyard, the "Rickety Wooden Bridge", hospital wing and new spires for the Durham section of  the main Hogwarts building.  Minute detail on the existing models was also improved, including retexturing the roof of the main building.  The newly landscaped version of Hogwarts was filmed in some sequences while it was wet, which particularly enhanced colour saturation and gave more definition and contrast.

Quote:
Other models built or enhanced for the latest Harry Potter film include the new courtyard and clocktower, which were built in more detail in 1/10 scale, the marble staircase which was rebuilt in 1/5 scale, developing its puzzling Escher-like architecture and adding additional  portraits and moving staircases.

Quote:
These included filling the ceiling of the Great Hall with computer generated Candles, creating the Enchanted Ceiling, the Monster Book of Monsters, Marauders' Map ink effects, various ghost and ghost horsemen effects and the stunning panoramic shot where the camera follows Hedwig flying through time and season towards Harry in the Hogwarts clocktower.
Quote:
The story of The Prisoner of Azkaban involves time travel, and Cinesite created the effect of turning back time in the sequence in the hospital wing, where Hermione reveals to Harry how her time-turner works.  Cinesite also created the other reverse matching shot to this is where Harry and Hermione return to the hospital wing and meet themselves turning back time.
Original live action of the children was filmed on a steadycam against bluescreen.  Four minutes of separate background footage was also shot, of the children arriving in the hospital, and other patients being treated around them.  This footage was sped up and composited behind the children.  Once Hermione has turned back time, the children run out of the hospital door and down a corridor; the camera continues straight on through the workings of the clock in the clock tower, while the children run down the stairs and meet up with the camera again in the courtyard.  The whole shot is treated as one continuous camera move.
The workings of the clock for both of the two major shots were entirely computer generated by Cinesite's modellers and animators, using detailed previsualisation and texture references supplied by the production.
Quote:
Another major effects shot shows the children approaching Hogwarts at night in carriages which appear to have no means of propulsion.  There is a dark and ominous feel to the shot; it is raining, stormy and a black crow lands on a post in the foreground as the carriages pass.
Two carriages were filmed motion control against a bluescreen and replicated into the distance with the motors removed. Hogwarts in the background is the 1/24 scale model.  Stills of mountains were supplied as reference for the environment, as well as live action footage of water and moving clouds.  This was then all stitched together in Inferno to create the environment and graded down for night.  CG rain was also added which interacts with the glowing light of Hogwarts.  The signpost and bird in the foreground were also composited in.

Before anyone complains, I'd like to add that, in Prisoner of Azkaban, the correct landscape was used. Unfortunately, Columbus shot Hogwarts as if it were in English countryside - PoA saw it finally put in the proper area of the UK, Scotland.

It seems like they have alot on their hands but they somehow managed it and PoA looked great. Lets hope that they can do as good of a job on GoF.

Snuggy!

They did a great job, and hopefully do a spectacular job on GoF! The only thing that bugged me was the tower and bridge that they added and the fact that they had to walk like a mile to get to Hagrid's hut, but thats not their falt(and slight exageration on the distance on my part.lol)

Anyway, I liked the landscape better in PoA, than in the first too--and we know they were shooting more in Scotland this time so hopfully it'll be the same in GoF, and if not the same loction, atleast its the Scottish mountainside.

That's a neat report, they did an excellent job creating the visual effects. I'm suprised only 167 F/X shots were used, I would think for a movie like this, the number would be much greater.

I'd actually bet that the clock tower & bridge are a part of Hogwarts. We've yet to see all of it in the books and I doubt JK would allow changes like that to occur if they were not accurate.

Hagrid's Hut was always quite a walk away, that's why the trio in the books always spent the afternoon down there, because it was such a hike. It makes more sense when you look at maps of the Hogwarts Grounds.

I've never realized how much was done with computers!

I guess it goes to show that they did it really well, since people couldn't notice it easily....
