| | Christian Bookstore sells Potter
Logos Bookstore in Oak Park, a Christian bookstore, sells copies of the Harry Potter novels aswell as the usual Bibles and Christian novels. The manager of the store, Beth Ann O'Reilly-Amandes, explains why she stocks them and why she thinks it's important that Christian people read the Potter books.
The article also explains why those who have no personal objections to the series don't stock the books as patrons would object to having them on sale. Quote:
"Our thinking is that because the mainstream public is reading the books, Christians should be aware of them and use them as an opportunity to bring in Christian themes and values," manager Beth Ann O'Reilly-Amandes said.
Quote:
O'Reilly-Amandes said that the Potter books are popular with her customers and that she is ordering 100 copies of "Half-Blood Prince," comparable to what she would order for one of the "Left Behind" novels, the million-selling apocalyptic series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.
Quote:
"If a customer has a question about why we carry the Potter books, then we'll suggest one of the Christian books, like (Connie Neal's) `What's a Christian to Do With Harry Potter?'" said Amandes-O'Reilly, referring to a sympathetic Potter book.
"It's a way of bringing more people into the conversation, without preaching to them. It's something that opens us all up."

First to post!
That's awesome! Good on her for not stopping at patron pressure or prejudices. I would think that stocking HP would encourage people to come in and look at the Christian books too.

That's interesting how she uses Harry Potter to promote Christian views. I wonder what JK would think about that.

^ I wouldn't go that far. HP does have Christian values as they equate to every day morals (good & bad etc...) but I don't think she'd be preaching from it!

Yes, she said she wasn't preaching, but used the book to open people to Christian ideals or refer it to other books. Well, in any case, thats how I took it. But it is nice how there are books from a Christian point of view that support HP.

But 'conversation' doesn't necessarily mean her beliefs. I think she's just saying Harry Potter encourages people to be sociable and open.

Wow.That is very interesting... I never thought someone would put Harry Potter books in a Christian book store. That is really shocking to me because I am Christian and my family doesn't like HP because of witchcraft, but I am sure glad that Christian book store is selling them! *Claps hands and cheers for the store owner.*

I like it that some christians can take a more liberal view on things like the harry potter books. It's good that she not giving in to all the anti-potter people.

I think it's great! Especially how she is doing it.
Very interesting, especially since you mentioned Tim LaHaye!
Hey, I know him! He actually worked at a Christian camp called 'The Wilds' in North Carolina in the mountains! He's a great person and lots of fun! That was where I went to see my first snow!! (Except it actually snowed in Florida just before we left, but not enough to last!)

| Finally! It's a miracle! All I ever hear about is Christians being outraged about it. I'm a Christian and see no problem-I think it actually teachs lessons that are good for anyone to learn. And! it is interesting enough for all of us to enjoy! Good for her. |

It is really nice to know that they are giving Christians the opportunity to find out for themsleves, instead of coming out and saying it is banned from my store.

I was just at my own church bookstore (a well-known nationwide publisher/bookstore chain also available online) and saw the HP books there. My church isn't touting HP as a Christian values book, but they don't view it as evil, either. This church bookstore doesn't just sell Christian/church books, but they are very selective and don't sell "trash", either. I'm not completely surprised by other Christian bookstores selling it, unless HP is the only non-Christian book offering available. But I highly doubt that's the case.

like lord of the rings? Why sell it? Well, if the owner likes the books, then why not? It doesn't have Bible quotations but it has all the connotations of good overpowering evil. Quote:

You shouldn't tarnish everyone with the same brush. Not all religious people have always thought of Potter in a bad light.
