| | China prefers Rowling to Anderson
A short article discusses the events that took place in China to commemorate the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen. It is mentioned that today's Chinese youth prefer Rowling to Anderson. Quote:
Whereas, Anderson is no longer the only icon of Chinese children. Message owl, flying sweeper and visionless mantle in " Harry Potter" have become new "beloved" for today's Chinese kids.
Together with Harry Potter, images from Japanese cartoons, American movies, and Korean novels have occupied children's imaginary world.
Ten-year-old Hu Zhenzhen is quoted as saying, "Anderson's fairy tales are too serious for me, and not fashionable enough."

Not fashionable enough??? It's a blasted classic...speaking of blasting...*Ottery takes out the cannons* You little...*fires cannons* It's cool that JKR is tops in pops, but Anderson's not half bad...Fairy tales rule, and his don't always have 'the happily ever after' unless Disney gets their hands on them... But everyone know's Disney's 'the evil empire' gives us Winnie the pooh back you evil...and now they're stealing Peter Pan...

I like your title of your post! I agree with that one and partly on everything else you say.
I think one should be careful with comparing those two - since Andersen lived a long time ago (200 years to be exact).
I'm a Dane and therefore this topic might be a bit 'sore' for me but I disagree with Hu Zhenzhen; they are not! The amazing thing about Andersen is that they are both for kids and for adults, because the story has so many layers. And also the stories are something that we, even today, can relate too. I know the same things can be said about JK - but remember Andersen lived 200 years ago!
It's more than fine that JK's books are more popular etc. than Andersen but well he still deserves our respect.
I love JK's books and it's great that HP are this succesful but please dont compare Andersen and JK!
Blah I could go on...

But you're right about Peter Pan. J.M.Barrie would be turning in his grave. At least the 2003 version did the real story justice.

That's two thinks that Disney is then... *cough*
I can understand why children today might not be fond of Anderson's stories. Perhaps - and I don't mean this to sound rude, arrogant, or ignorant, but perhaps this is more with chinese culture... I'm curious as to how popular ASOUE would do since they aren't very uplifting either, per se.

| Different Times.
At the end of the day the world is a richer place than its was 200 years ago.
If Anderson was alive today i'm sure he would be just as popular as JK and his books would have reached just as many people.
Plus, 200 years ago didn't have the same media push for sales as it does today!
Imagine! What if Anderson was alive today! What do you reckon the competition would be? Or are they soo different [in context] that there would be no competition at all?..... hmmm

I love fairy tales! Andersen IS the definition of fairy tales. JKR is a whole different thing, a different kind of fantasy world, but I love them equally the same.

Good for china. I'll tell you this - it's not a long way down before other countries do the same.

They're classics, they never go out of fashion...favor maybe, but even that I'd disagree...how many publishers, print Andersen's Fairy Tales...how many people know them...just because they're not at the top of the sales chart doesn't mean people hate them...the Wizard of Oz on the other hand...most people don't know there was a book written, much less the fifty or more odd sequels... It's too late for you Marcella...Winnie the Pooh was not supposed to be a tool for the capitalist evil...remember the money from that goes into: Quote:

Peter Pan, and unauthorized sequels...like Peter and the Starcatchers which is money that doesn't go to Children's Hospitals...just how much money does Disney need anyways???? And I still want to write the sequel to Peter Pan...but I'd give the money to the hospital... Quote:

Too different...like Star Wars and Lotr, and HP, fantasy but not much the same... Quote:
Sleeping beauty and a taalking ***** in boots is all out of fashion right now people ! move in to the computer age.
Anderson didn't write either of those, they're French Fairy tales, and Harry doesn't use a computer . As for not in vogue...Shrek anyone? Quote:

Why is it only kids ever say that??? Anyways you've obviously never read fairy tales uncensored...

*agrees* I still love fairy tales. I love reading them, I like the Disney movies, I just don't like it when they start doing movies like Hillary Duff's cinderella story or something like that. I like the ones with the twists, like when Ever After with Drew Barrymore, or that one made-for-tv-movie about Snow White. Classics never go out of style...
And Emma... Heffalump?? |
