Thousands of Bulgarian boys skipped school this week to audition for a part in the next Harry Potter film.
But teachers say they will not be punishing the boys and criticised education officials for not declaring a school holiday.
Producers of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire announced last week that they wanted a real Bulgarian to play the part of Victor Krum, and teenagers up and down the country rushed to auditions.
Teachers in the capital Sophia and other cities around the country predicted mass truancy and appealed to the Ministry of Education to declare the two days a holiday.
Yavor Chavdarov, 15, from the First Language School in Sofia, said: "I and all my friends skipped some classes in order to make the audition. Harry Potter sometimes misses his, so it was a good start for my audition."
Producers carrying out the first stage auditions encouraged the truancy by saying they did not want a boy scout to play the part of Krum, the captain of the Bulgarian Quidditch team.
Krum, who is described as "dark and brooding", also plays the love interest for Harry Potter's school friend Hermione Granger.
