| | Book Banning Decision Appealed Turned down in an attempt to ban the HP books from the school her children attend, Laura Mallory has appealed to Georgia Board of Education. Earlier this year SS carried a story concerning the attempted book banning of the Harry Potter books in a school system in Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA. The Gwinnett School Board ruled that the woman's request was without merit and the HP books stayed in the school's library. The state board is set to make its ruling this Thursday in Atlanta. You can read more about the original case here and more about the appeal here. Quote:
Laura Mallory, whose children attend J.C. Magill Elementary School, presented her appeal in October to the state Board of Education. The Gwinnett board ruled unanimously in May that the best-selling series by J.K. Rowling could stay on the shelves.
Quote:
Dana Tofig, the spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education, said the board typically does not discuss such appeals in public. “The board received a recommendation from the hearing officer, discusses in executive session and then affirms the ruling in public,” Tofig said.
The ruling will be posted online at http://www.gadoe.org/pea_board.aspx?...BoardDecisions.

I am pulling for the GA Broad of Education to confirm the Gwinnett Country decision and find the case without merit. What really irks me is the lady never read the books. She is basing her attempt to ban HP on the comments of others.

What on earth is this all about? How can you have an opinion on them if you haven't read them? And if you don't want to read them, DON'T READ THEM. lol. Why does everyone else have to suffer without HP? Gah.

| This woman is silly, they're only books, there are loads other books with witchcraft in them too and that are against religion (Phillip Pullmans Dark Materials, The Da vinci Code) she could be asking to get banned but no she had to choose Harry Potter just because its poplular sillyness |

Ok. I am REALLY getting tired of this non-reading HP woman who makes her judgments based on what?!?! It's ridiculous and stupid! Gosh, people these days and their non-thinking brains....

Some people should REALLY read the books before requesting that they are banned. If they would, they would learn the books are about good and evil, and the most important theme in the book is Love. Now exactly how is that bad for the kid whose reading the story?

Harry Potter is the most ban book so far in the 21st century according to the American Library Association. It's sad because HP began a reading revolution in many young people. I know people who hated reading until they read their first HP book. I know I am a better reader because of HP and my love for books is greater too.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Jack Fletcher Fourth Year | Dumbledore's Licorice Snaps Chipotle! I'm sick and tired fo people trying to ban Harry Potter! Harry never did anything to them! She can not let her kids read it if she wants, but it's not fair to everyone else! JKR is a good person, and she doesn't try and offend people. I, personally, am a Christian, and go to church every week I can, but I don't think it's bad to read Potter! It's just a book, and i's not like we are going out and trying to use 'Avada Kadavra' on people we don't like; we know it's not real! I knew a girl, who said her best friend read the book and tried a spell, and it worked. I told her that that's crazy, and as much as I love the books, I know that it is entirely fiction! So, yea, I just don't think it should be banned!

This is not the kind of books that contain dark magic that should be banned..There are other books who are talking about the real magic not Harry Potter at all.

I agree totally! Harry Potter is not against any religion I don't think. It does have things that religions wouldn't like, of course, but that doesn't mean they can't read it! After all, it's just fiction! Plus, I think JKR wouldn't do anything like that, to go against peoples' religions intentionally. I think that a ban is stupid...

Sixth Year | I hope she is burned at a stake. It's people like her that probably initiated the Salem Witch Trials way back when.
Either that or her getting strapped to a boulder and having her liver gorged out multiple times by a very enraged buckbeak.
Just kidding by the way. I don't want anyone to die. I just want her to be given a good beating.
Actually, just making her shut up would be good enough.
Oh! And I hope her children grow up to be communists. No offence to any communists.
I bet she's racist and anti-semetic too. Ok, I need to shut up. This is getting pretty heated and should be taken to Charing Cross roads. *grumble grumble*

yes!!! Stupid lady. ugh! She makes me so mad. I just wrote a paper against banning the HP books recently and I wrote about her. I'm glad they repealed the case. Everything she said about HP made no sense and besides, you can't plead banning a book when you've never read it. It was idiotic anyway.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Professor McFarlane Graduated | IndyEddie You know, I could understand people like this if the books actually gave instruction as to how to do witchcraft, but they don't.
I say all people who oppose HP should have their houses checked out for the ever popular fairytales which also *gasp* contain witchcraft and magic. If they so much have a book or movie of, oh, let's say, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, etc, then they should be thrown out of court. In fact, if anyone bans HP, then all of those books should be removed then. Honestly. Hypocrits Quote:

that woman seriously needs to get a life, hu on earth does she think she is telling kids what they can and cant read? its not up to her,if i was at a school wher the books were banned i go to her personally and remind her what other kids like read has nothin to do wiv her whatsoever,
n like its been said, she hasnt read the books so shes not in a position to judge, so it means shes shallow i cant stand shallow people

| Tag? I'll never have a tag! Not only do I not like this but I do not understand her "reasoning". There are many more books that describe things that the bible (or other documented religious books) does not believe in and does not support. Such as books that have explicit detail in murder, sex and even books that go into other religions. Which by the way it is against every religion to believe in another kind. But, we don't see any people attempting a ban on any said books. It's ridiculous. This woman obviously needs to receive a higher education. Maybe she'll learn something. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Lorna North | i think that trying to ban Harry Potter books is riddiculous. you should let people read whatever they want to read. she should learn to respect that not all people have the same beliefs as her. i just am so against any thing like that, not only just Harry potter related, but all books. if i were her i would be happy that the kids want to read in the first place, and they could be reading alot worse things than Harry Potter if you ask me. |
