Bloomsbury announces Severus Snape voted as favourite character in Harry Potter books

Months ago, Bloomsbury launched a worldwide search and vote to find out which Harry Potter character was the favourite amongst fans. The voting period has now ended, and the winner was chosen.

SEVERUS SNAPE

VOTED FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM HARRY POTTER NOVELS

‘Snape finished calling the names and looked up at the class. His eyes were black like Hagrid’s, but they had none of Hagrid’s warmth. They were cold and empty and made you think of dark tunnels.’ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Severus Snape, Potions master, Head of Slytherin and Death Eater has taken the number one spot in the vote to find the world’s favourite character from the Harry Potter novel.

Snape snatched the top spot from Harry, J.K. Rowling’s personal favourite. When asked about her favourite character J.K. Rowling said: ‘Harry, although I believe I am unusual in this, Ron is generally more popular (I love him too, though) Now that I have finished writing the books, the character I would most like to meet for dinner is Dumbledore. We would have a lot to discuss, and I would love his advice; I think that everyone would like a Dumbledore in their lives.’

The vote was launched in May 2011 and received over 70,000 votes. Severus Snape gained 20% of those votes (just under 13,000) making him a clear winner. Severus Snape has appeared in all seven of the Harry Potter novels and came to be an integral part of Harry Potter’s life.

Hermione Granger took second place and Sirius Black third. Harry himself came in fourth and Lord Voldemort just made the top twenty at number 17. Dobby is the only non-human character to make the top ten and another Slytherin, Draco Malfoy, completes the top characters in tenth place. The top 40 is below:
1. Severus Snape
2. Hermione Granger
3. Sirius Black
4. Harry Potter
5. Ron Weasley
6. Luna Lovegood
7. Ginny Weasley
8. Albus Dumbledore
9. Dobby
10. Draco Malfoy
11. Remus Lupin
12. Neville Longbottom
13. Fred Weasley
14. Bellatrix Lestrange
15. Minerva McGonagall
16. Rubeus Hagrid
17. Lord Voldemort
18. Nymphadora Tonks
19. Gilderoy Lockhart
20. George Weasley
21. James Potter
22. Hedwig
23. Lily Potter
24. Lucius Malfoy
25. Molly Weasley
26. Cedric Diggory
27. Alastor Moody
28. Arthur Weasley
29. Kreacher
30. Dementors
31. Dolores Umbridge
32. Moaning Myrtle
33. Sybill Trelawney
34. Rita Skeeter
35. Filius Flitwick
36. Argus Filch
37. Dudley Dursley
38. Vincent Crabbe

Somehow I had the feelings he'd win... :shifty:

Nevertheless, congratulations to Sevy! :glomp:

I'm really glad that Snape won:woot:

It was either him or Neville. I would have been alright with either of them winning. Neville was the unsung hero. The quiet boy who first stood up to the trio in PS and finally against Voldemort during the battle when everyone thought all was lost.

But Snape?? Yes he DEFINITELY deserved the win. Can you imagine how hard it must have been for him to 'act' as if he was back with Voldemort? How risky it was? Yes he had this Hate-Love...hate because Harry acted exactly like his father, but love at the same time because every time Snape looked into Harry's eyes, he saw Lily. The torture it must have been for him to secretly love someone who loved someone else and then to be the first person to find her dead. The agony to know that he wasn't able to save her. Yes he was the misunderstood "quiet" suffering hero.

I like the really strong showing by Ginny here! Nice to know there are so many other Ginny lovers out there.

I posed a question about Snape on another SS thread, and I didn't really get a response, so I will try again here. I genuinely do not understand why -- if his love for Lily Potter was the motivating force of his entire life -- Snape was a first class jerk (bordering on abusive) to Harry ever since Harry was 11 years old. I get that in order to be an effective double agent, Snape had to put up a front about Harry, but it was amply clear after 5 or 6 years that Snape's actions towards Harry were no false pretend. He genuinely hated Harry and went out of his way to let Harry know that repeatedly ever since Harry was a young boy. I guess that maybe Snape saw James in Harry and that is what drove Snape so crazy. But if that is true, why didn't Snape also sometimes see Lily in Harry, and why didn't that mitigate his actions towards Harry? I am not saying that Snape had to be president of the Harry Potter Fan Club, but why couldn't he have in some way tipped Harry off to his mixed feelings? Why did he have to go so out of his way to be so nasty? Not a single moment of kindness in almost 7 years? His behavior towards the boy hardly seems the behavior of one who was entirely motivated by love of the boy's mother. Anyway, I genuinely don't understand this and I wonder if anybody can shed some satisfactory light on it.

Fran James Granger 08-30-2011 06:32 PM

I bet that if you asked for snape one film or book ago Severus will appear beyond 5th!!!!

Hermione and Dumbledore win for me!!!!

Harry did not win just because you take for obvius and forget to vote him!

jain 08-30-2011 06:37 PM

what an absolute travesty! Obviously people didn't read the same series of books that JK Rowling wrote. To paraphase a quote from the trailer of Cowboys and Aliens. There are bad people who do good. Snape abused his position as a teacher in his abuse of Harry, his abuse was every bit as bad as the Dursley's. It was Snape's love for lily and that alone that drove his 'goodness' towards Harry. If Snape could have kept Lily alive while stepping over the bodies of her husband and son, he would have, and would never have understood her grief and loss.

Good questions...all of them. People are complicated and maybe JKR showed us just that...just because Snape loved Lily did not entirely remove his disgust/hatred for James and subsequently any offspring they had. It would be too easy to make Snape the all grand protector of Harry...I mean, he would be an angel if he had...but he didnt...he had very conflicting emotions of love, jealousy, dedication, etc.:snape2:

Thank you for taking a stab at it. And you are probably right: The answer is that there is no truly satsifying answer, and that many (most?) people are not all black or all white, but are shades of grey. (Interestingly, JKR does offer main characters who are all bad -- Voldy -- or bascially all good -- Harry.) I just wish Snape had been a little more "grey" in his behavior towards Harry over the years. That would have made his love of Lily seem a little more real. IMHO.

kindofabigdeel 08-30-2011 07:34 PM

Yup, that's about right :D And (as much as I love them both) pretty content that Fred is WAY above George

I agree with you again...I also hoped Snape would have been a little bit nice every once in a while...but looking back, wasnt it a great foil!? We all believed Snapey was bad until the end. JKR did an awesome job fooling everyone, i think. As far as the main characters that are either all bad or all good, i take Lucius Malfoy as an example of bad, but in the end, just a dad who cared for his son.
