| | |  Whomping Willow
 The Whomping Willow is a valuable, and extremely violent, sentient magical tree. It has stood on the Hogwarts grounds since 1971, surviving several battles, a collision from a flying Ford Anglia, and thousands of reckless daredevil students. The violent flailing of its limbs serve a well-known purpose in protecting the hidden pathway beneath its roots, and though this passageway to the Shrieking Shack has fallen into disrepair, finding a way to touch the trick knot on the tree's trunk will still calm its movements. For a moment, anyway.
Students are reminded to maintain a safe and respectful distance from this tree, no matter how curious or reckless brave you're feeling. The Whomping Willow will not hesitate to attack anyone who comes within reach of its branches. Violent, magical trees are not exactly known for being easygoing, and nor are irritated groundskeepers happening upon children taking unnecessary risks. You have been warned.

What a weird tree.
The third year wrapped her hands in the ends of her sweater sleeves as she watched its angry branches beat at the cool September air. It was early, before breakfast - Eden still kept up with her morning runs - and dew clung to the grass beneath her feet.
After Elijah had placed her essentially on house arrest in July, Eden had spent more than one long night playing fantasy games on her brother's gaming system. If real life were like those games, then finding this tree would probably be the start of one of those long side-quests that sucked her in and spit her out in the early hours of the morning.
Of course, this was real life - she couldn't go back a save if she fell victim to a tree's anger management problems. So she stayed a few yards back from the branches' reach, listening to the whip-like sound they made as they flailed. Her eyes scanned the willow's roots. She'd heard the stories just like everybody else.

One benefit of this groundskeeping gig was definitely having more excuse than ever to get out on the grounds. Not that Kamran had ever really needed much excuse to spend time outside, nor waited for a specific reason to arise. There was always a reason, even if that reason was just the freshness of the open air.
Kamran whistled as he walked this morning, doing his routine early-morning check of the grounds, which likely gave away his approach long before he came into view. At that point, he spotted the student already there. "Morning, Miss Tilly." She was up early, but not so early as to be pushing her luck with the whole curfew business. Kamran anticipated plenty of that before the term was out. He drew up nearby, similarly out of danger's reach, and looked to the tree as well. "Not planning on taking on the Willow, I hope?"

Eden turned to share this opinion whomever it was that approached her...but that plan was dashed before she could so much as open her mouth, because of course it was a professor. Two years ago she would've given him a fake smile and tried to schmooze. Today? Her expression remained stoic. "Good morning, Professor," Eden said softly, turning her gaze to the taller man. She hadn't been intending on approaching the tree - not today, at least, though it was definitely earmarked for a later adventure. Is that why he was here? That thought drew a chuckle from the Ravenclaw's lips. "No, sir. School hasn't been all that bad, yet - maybe ask me again around November."

"Good. Wouldn't bode well if you kids were ready to square up with the Whomping Willow this early on." Now there was an idea, Kamran thought to himself, as he folded his arms and watched the Willow's spindly branches wafting, gentle and deceptive, in the breeze. He ought to keep an eye on the tree and the route to and from it, one way to gauge student stress levels.
Kidding. Possibly.
"November. I'll keep that in mind." Wait. "For official purposes, that wasn't an endorsement." Full disclaimer. Often seemed to be necessary in this place. "Just enjoying the view then? It's a magnificent tree."
Listen, Kamran wasn't going to be suspicious about what might have anyone lingering here when few others were around. That would be smart unfair of him. Not to mention, these kids had brains in their heads, as much as some of them were determined to act otherwise, and picked up on that kind of thing. Then you had self-fulfilling prophecies out the ear, which was good for precisely nobody.

"I'm wondering why more people haven't tried to get through the passageway, honestly," Eden said with a shrug. Why hadn't they used it in first year? Did it still work? A lot of the "whys" and "whats" of this school were far beyond her. Maybe beyond anybody? It felt like half of what she read was already outdated.
She didn't care about admitting her curiosity to a teacher - she wasn't stupid enough to engage with the tree where she might get hurt or caught, and in any case it seemed like teachers at this school didn't stick around very long. There was a chance Kazmi would be gone before any real plan for sneaking out was in place. He could keep an eye on her if he wanted to. It didn't matter.
"Does it still go to Hogsmeade?"

Ah, well, Kamran couldn't say he was surprised that such a curiosity existed. "It's unusable nowadays. Still possible to freeze the tree and get under the roots, but no further than that. Not enough room to swing a kneazle once you're inside."
Happened to a lot of the secret passageways, but whether it was the magic fading and rendering them inaccessible, or the else the school itself closing them up, Kamran couldn't say for certain. Maybe others had opened up, but scouring the castle had turned up nothing so far. Given the tendency of many of these students to overstep boundaries (sometimes in the very literal sense), it was wise to keep on top of that sort of thing.
"... Not that I expect the more curious students to be satisfied with something so simple as an explanation." Kamran paused, considering the swaying branches for a moment, before regarding Tilly again. Ravenclaws. Curiosity was a magnet for trouble, if not accommodated for, and he was fairly certain this one had curiosity in bucketloads. "If you're ever tempted to investigate for yourself, I would ask that you do so with permission and supervision from a member of staff." For his peace of mind, if nothing else. Please and thank you.
