Located just south of the castle is a large body of water known as the Great Lake or the Black Lake. This is where the first years encounter the school for the first time when the Groundskeeper takes them there by boat. After seven years they will leave the castle, their individual house and their home behind as they sail back across the Great Lake to embark on new adventures.
If you decide to dip your toes in the water, be careful of the many magical creatures inhibiting the lake that might mistake a little student’s toe for a tasty treat. For in the Great Lake lives everything from merpeople to grindylows. Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid, however is not interested in nibbling on toes, but would much rather have someone tickle his tentacles while he soaks up some sun.
Why don’t you follow his lead and do the same? Do some homework in the sun heated grass, take that well deserved nap before Ancient Runes or catch up on that reading. Enjoy your time at the Great Lake!
Shera wasn't sure how exactly it had come to this.
It was probably just catching sight of the water that had really led to this. Without classes to go to and homework to procrastinate on she had pulled on a pair of swimmers, wrapped a towel around herself and bolted for the lake. It wasn't hard to ignore any confused looks of people she ran past on the way there. This first year was much too focussed on her goal.
Throwing the towel on the ground near to the edge of the lake she'd quickly run in, diving under for a moment to adjust to the temperature of the water. Then she'd quickly returned to float on top of the surface to just enjoy feeling the water.

She could get used to this.
Daehyun needed a break.
He'd woken up with a goal that morning - that of exploring every inch of the castle, except he hadn't considered the actual size of the castle and grounds in his excitement to do so. So there he was, panting and barely dragging his feet towards the lake, which would likely be his last destination of the day. He was going to find a nice place on the grass to sit in the sun and read through his favourite bestiary, which he held close to his chest - not like he hadn't read it at least a dozen times already.
He'd heard of the grindylows in the lake, so it never hurt to learn more.
He was about to sit down, when he'd noticed a towel discarded on the ground... which he found odd.
... until he heard the splashes.
Daehyun's eyes were impossibly wide when he saw none other than Shera, floating on the lake without a care in the world. "Merlin's bea-" he yelped, the rest of what he'd said muffled by a hand he'd smacked over his mouth to shut himself up. Reddening so deep that he resembled a radish at the sight of Shera, he turned his back on her. And he wasn't going to look till she wore at least that towel that he then supposed was hers.

Shera was so lost in the calmness of the water that she hadn't considered the possibility of other people being around. A rather strange sound caught her ears, causing her to right herself up and go back to treading water. Scanning the area on the banks her eyes finally landed on another person.
She assumed it was probably that person that had made the noise. It took another few seconds for her to realise that it was Daehyun. But why was he facing the other way? He had to have seen her, right?
Shera shrugged, swimming back to a point where she could stand before running over to her towel and letting it hang over her shoulders before moving swiftly back to her friend. "Hey Daehyun, how are you?"
She asked with a big smile on her face. Because that was an appropriate reaction, then her head tilted to the side slightly at how red he was. "Are you sick?"
That would be problematic. Although, Shera was half sure she knew the way to the hospital wing.

She saw him.
Of course she did - she'd have to be deaf not to have heard his yelp. Which he liked to believe was justified, with the state he'd found Shera in. He could hear her steps behind him, and soon she was somewhere in his line of sight; if only he could look at her. He felt like he shouldn't - didn't even know if she draped that towel over herself, which still wouldn't be enough for him to be comfortable - so he kept his eyes firmly on his feet. And Shera's bare feet.
"I-I'm-fine," he wheezed out, shaking his head when she'd asked if he's sick. "Aren't you-isn't it cold?" Not like he'd ever tried to wear his swimsuit in September, since he didn't even own one... because he didn't know how to swim... and refused to learn.

He wasn't looking at her?
This was strange.
Very strange.
There was a mystery to be solved here. But it could wait until later. First step was actually getting the boy to look at her again. It would be hard to be friends if he could never look her in the eye. Of course, maybe that would also be hilarious because by seventh year he might have forgotten what she looked like.
Now he was wheezing, she raised an eyebrow at his response that he wasn't sick. Maybe he was just one of those guys. "It's actually really nice in the water, you should try going in sometime." Because it was actually magnificent if she did say so herself. Though you did have to be slightly aware of lake monsters....
"How are you liking Gryffindor?" the red tie suited him, but she was still... disappointed that they weren't in the same house. It would have made all of their planning much simpler if they could just do it in the common room. And also the cheering for her during Quidditch when she got onto the team.
If she tried out every year they'd have to accept her eventually.

In the water?
Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. No.
"Water?" he echoed dumbly, firmly shaking his head. "I-I can't even-" Whatever forces helped people float like Shera just did moments earlier... they didn't work on him. "Nuh-uh. And there's-there's grindylows, and the Giant Squid! And Merlin knows what else." There was no way he was getting in that lake.
When she'd asked him how he liked Gryffindor, he unconsciously tugged on the ends of the red tie he'd loosened around his neck, choosing to focus on it instead of their feet. "It was-unexpected, don't you think?" She didn't even have to know him very well to know he wasn't the bravest lion there's ever been. "But everyone's been so nice and welcoming that I can't help but love it." Even though everyone was loud and bright and cheery and everything he was not.
"What's Ravenclaw like?" he asked with a smile, finally looking at Shera... until he realized that she was still only in her bathing suit, and focused back on his tie like it was the most interesting thing in the world.

Scarlett kept having the weirdest reoccurring dream. She wasn't sure why her brain had concocted such an odd fantasy, but it had, and it seemed like every other night, she kept having dreams starring none other than Tenacius Salander. The Head Boy. Granted, she had spoken only two or three words to the guy maybe her ENTIRE time here at Hogwarts, but he seemed like a decent kid. He just happened to be the star each and every time, which was so RANDOM. What made it even weirder was what HAPPENED in the dreams.
Every time he showed up into her dreams, he turned into an animal. It was a different animal every time - a zebra once, an ostrich another time, a platypus in another version - and whenever it happened, her dream self would freak out and it would be revealed that she had to brew an antidote, or he would be stuck in that form forever. She was in a different place every time, and the potion ingredients she needed made ZERO sense - in one dream, she needed a rubber duck to complete the potion - and she could never find the ingredients. So she woke up, shaking and sweating and afraid that she had let the Head Boy down. Then she would remember it was just a dream, the Head Boy was (probably) NOT transfigured into an ostrich somewhere, and she would eventually fall back asleep.
Maybe it was some sort of repressed fear of disappointing her parents, or failing her upcoming Potions NEWT, or something like that. Whatever it was, it was freaky and she was hoping these weird dreams would pass soon. If they didn't she'd have to start taking Calming Draughts before bed or something, which was not ideal.
After another one of these dreams during her nap today - he had been an electric eel this time, which was TOTALLY bizarre - she wandered down to the Grounds for some much needed fresh air. She wanted to savor as much of this cool, crisp fall air before winter came. She settled down near the lake and smiled as the breeze hit her face. Ahh. Already much better.

The lake was Harriet's favourite place to be. She loved the pretty water, and the views, and it was fine. She adored it. It was her favorite place to be, and to paint. She was excited to be able to be there again. It was literally the first place that she had been to following the feast, and after she'd been to sleep. She'd brought some of her paint supplies with her, ready to do a quick painting. It had been so long since she'd done one down here. She was excited. She smiled as she headed down there. She was happy to be at Hogwarts, even if she was really missing her boyfriend. It would be okay. She'd see him in a few weeks in Hogsmeade. She could survive a few weeks.
Upon getting to the lake, she sat herself down near one of the trees, and set her easel up. She leant back against the tree and smiled. hmm. Now to decide what to do now, what exactly she wanted to paint. This could take a bit of time.

Skipping rocks had quickly become a Felicity thing. After Flynn had left her for home, she'd spent a lot of time at the beach, closer to the water than she would even think about going with him, and a lot of time alone had turned into some strange habits, including skipping rocks. Already bundled in a scarf - she still didn't like the September air - the sixth year stood at the edge of the lake and threw stone after stone into the water.
Trying to beat eight. Her own personal best. Which was apparently impressive, but the thought of that statement merely caused her to roll her eyes. After time, she pulled her scarf from around her neck, and was about to pick up another stone when movement caught her eye.
Movement of a familiar person. With a small smile, she sidled closer to Harriet. "Can I watch?" And admire? And be in general awe of her friends talent?

Ancient Bartholomew swam slowly along the waters. He was observing the many students loitering around. Bartholomew loved watching them. Human activity was always too fascinating. Now he was close to the shore. Bartholomew raised two tentacles which he waved in greeting at random.
"Good day, children! Are you enjoying this fine day?"

Isa was up fairly early in the morning going for a run by the lake. Had to stay in shape for quidditch season, you know. She would need to be at the top of her game if the Hufflepuff team was going to have any chance of winning this year. Her feelings about being captain were a mix of excitement and inadequacy; with little experience in real quidditch matches she had a lot to learn and she was afraid of letting everyone down. It was also going to be difficult to balance quidditch with her other activities such as orchestra and choir. She was interested in participating in the drama club and maybe auditioning for the musical too, but she didn’t have time to do everything and with OWLs this year, she was going to need more time to study. This would also mean she had less time to play with her rabbits and tend to her plants, which Isa enjoyed. Still running, Isa tried to clear her mind of the stress and worry. It was quite meditative, really. She paid attention to the rhythmic sound of her feet repeatedly hitting the ground, felt the cool breeze on her face, and noticed her surroundings. The lake was sparkling in the morning sun, the grass soft beneath her shoes and slightly damp against her bare ankles. All was peaceful outside, and Isa was calmed within.

He can't even?
Was it possible that he couldn't swim? Shera wasn't sure if she went with the right assumption, especially because he was pointing out valid things when it came to the Grindylows. "Well the giant squid is harmless according to older students. And I've heard there's also mermaids in the water which is really cool!"
That probably wasn't going to help his desire to not go into the water, but she couldn't help bouncing on her toes at the idea. Plus, she was fine. Wasn't that enough evidence?
"I'm glad you like it there," she was smiling nicely at him, because she really was happy that he liked it. "Ravenclaw's good. I really like the colour theme of the common room! But... I also get what you mean, I didn't really expect to be where I am."
Shera was still half expecting the hat to call her back and tell her that it had made a mistake.
Her eyes glanced over to the tentacles now popping out of the lake and grinned at the squid that was asking them how they were. She quickly shot a glance at Daehyun as if to say 'I told you it was fine,' before skipping down to the edge of the lake again.

The idea of swimming in the lake, which was the home of merpeople, somehow didn't appeal to Daehyun, besides the fact that he couldn't even swim in the first place. Though he smiled when Shera had told him that the Giant Squid was harmless, suddenly wanting to meet the creature. He could trust Shera's words, couldn't he?
He couldn't help but frown when she'd said she hadn't expected it to be a Ravenclaw. "Why not? You're so witty and bright." He could tell that even from their first meeting. "Plus, blue suits you." Unlike red on him, which only turned him into a tomato on the often times that he blushed.
He let out a soft "Whoa," when he saw the immense tentacles coming out of the water, watching in fascination as they waved in their direction, his fear long forgotten. He hurried to catch up with Shera, and scurried over to the shore. "Good day, err-" Sir? Mister? "I'm sorry, what would you like us to call you?" He'd rather ask first than insult the kind squid. Nodding in response to his question, he asked, "How is your day?"
Truly fascinating. Could they befriend the Giant Squid? Daehyun sure felt more comfortable having friends with tentacles, than human ones.

She was still proud of herself for being right, a grin on her face as the boy in front of her hurried after her to also check out the giant squid that had just made it's presence known.
Shera had to remind herself to actually respond to the questions directed at her. Shrugging lightly, she tried to think about how to best explain it. "Well... I feel like the people I've met put more effort into their work?" That was what she had seen so far. They were actually motivated for the sake of being motivated. Especially Jessa...
And then there was Shera who lacked all motivation unless something intrigued her, involved quidditch, or she was allowed to have a nap afterwards because she would definitely be tired.
"Thanks," she smiled softly at the compliment of the blue suiting her. Her eyes quickly evaluating the red and gold tie on him. "The red looks good on you too."
Then, all of a sudden, she couldn't help herself from giggling. When it finally subsided, she looked towards the first friend she had made in Diagon Alley. "Can you believe that we're already at Hogwarts? And that we've been sorted now..."

It was ridiculous.
Daehyun considered Shera's words for a moment before saying anything because, really, he thought it was only her being overly worried, or pressured to make her House proud and live up to their expectations. Finally looking at her and fighting back the heat that rushed up to his cheeks - had she come all the way down there in only a towel draped over her swimsuit? - he said, "I'm sure it'll come when you find something worth putting more effort into, and it's only natural now that you're not yet familiar with many things. Like, err-like I'm passionate about creatures!" Though she would probably be horrified at his collection of bestiaries and the number of times he'd read each. "I'm sure you'll find your own thing." And that was possibly the most he'd ever said in one breath. "Let me know if I can help in any way?" He wasn't sure how to help, but he wanted to help, so if she had any ideas, he'd be up for it.
... then she had to mention the red, to which he could only nod in thanks because he didn't trust his voice to say anything about it - he would have disagreed, but he was sure his voice would come out squeaky and he would turn redder then, so he left it at that.
Daehyun was finally feeling more at ease when she giggled, wondering what had gotten into her, and then she'd told him as if she'd read his mind. "No way," he grinned. "I have yet to get used to the moving staircases. And did you see there's a nursery for magical creatures down there?" he said, pointing towards the general direction of where he'd spotted it one day.

Passionate about creatures was an understatement.
Shera had to contemplate what he had said for a moment, before shrugging lightly. "At least I'm got the Quidditch try outs coming up."
Because she was definitely passionate about Quidditch. That was the one thing that was currently really exciting her coming up. Yes, there were still classes that she was intrigued by and so much of the castle to explore. But Quidditch? That was currently at the forefront of her mind. Even thought she was still nervous about not getting on the team.
Creatures? "What kind of creatures do you like?" the question was thrown out there, but if she was honest she didn't know much about any creatures. The only reason she knew what a Fwooper was, was because she had a Fwooper feather wand core from Ollivanders. But it would be interesting to see what he said, and finding something Daehyun was passionate enough about to forget that he was shy was something on her to do list.
She tilted her head to the side at the mention of a magical creature nursery. "No, I haven't seen that yet, you'll have to show it to me sometime... I got distracted by the lake and this is as far as I've made it. I've found the entrance to the kitchen though! And the house elves are so cute!"

Quidditch try-outs? Daehyun's eyes brightened at that. "I'm getting my blue face paint ready!" Maybe he could charm his tie to change colours, and blend in with the mass of Ravenclaws when Shera had a match. If not, he'll risk being discovered by his Housemates, but he'll shamelessly cheer for her anyway. "Is there a certain position you want to try out for?"
He could only grin when Shera asked him what creatures he liked, because he could likely talk her ears off about it. "Any!" he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Though I would love to have a winged horse one day. There are some infants at the nursery, you have to see them!" Had his pupils turned into hearts yet?
Hearing about house elves only got him more excited, pretty much like a child on Christmas Eve. "Can you show me sometime? I've wanted to thank them for the food ever since the first feast." Being a cooking enthusiast himself, he'd been more than delighted to find that food would not be a problem at Hogwarts.

Shera couldn't help but smile at the thought of Daehyun painting his face blue to support her when she was playing. "Thanks. I've put my name down for any, but I think I'd prefer playing as a chaser..." chaser tended to be a favourite position. But she wouldn't mind as long as she got on the team.
"We definitely need to go... I've never actually seen a winged horse," though to be fair she'd also never seen a horse in real life. "The only animals that I've ever been close to are my cat and our family owl..."
Would that admission horrify him?
"Of course I can! But if you're ever walking around the lower floors and come across a painting of a fruit bowl, that's the entrance to the kitchens. You have to tickle the pear for the portrait to open," the question was, would he believe her explanation or assume she was joking?
She pulled the most serious face she could to try to emphasise that she wasn't joking. Of course, she struggled to not smile, so it crept onto her face again almost immediately.

Chaser! That would put Shera in the spotlight most of the time, so Daehyun could only anticipate her first match, no matter what position she played. "Fingers crossed for chaser, then!" And he crossed his fingers for emphasis. "I'm looking forward to seeing you play." The discussion reminded him of the thing she'd said she would help him with, the one thing he would not speak of, hoping she'd forgotten.
She'd never seen a winged horse before? Daehyun bounced on his heels in the smallest movement, barely containing his excitement, sending a silent prayer that she didn't notice. "Then you must come to the infirmary with me! I wish you could meet my growing zoo that I have at home." He'd be lying if he said he hadn't considered asking someone to enlarge his trunk on the inside and find a way to bring all of his pets to Hogwarts... but in the end, he had to settle for his new owl. Next he wanted a salamander... maybe he could sneak that one in, too?
"Tickle... the pear... in the portrait?" He wondered if Shera was serious, because he could see she was struggling to keep a straight face... but eventually he shook his head, laughing to himself. "You know what, after encountering the Whomping Willow, that doesn't even surprise me." Not to mention that they were having a conversation with a gentle squid. "You think there are more passages through other portraits?" They did agree to explore every inch of the castle.

"We'll see," she still smiled, but a hand did reach up to nervously run through her hair as she thought about the upcoming try outs. She was going to be alright. It wouldn't be too long until then and then she could finally relax about all of this. She brightened up again almost immediately, adding, "Maybe we'll get you on the Quidditch team by seventh year.... but then you might have to play against me."
She giggled lightly at his enthusiasm, glad that she had definitely found the thing he was passionate. Hopefully her little giggle wouldn't revert him back to being shy, so she decided to keep talking about it to distract him. "You have a zoo at home? What do you have in it?"
He looked dubious at her explanation, so Shera nodded at his question. "You tickle the pear. I like it a lot more than having to answer a riddle to enter the common room," because she had gotten stuck once already. But that was another story.
And another reason why she probably shouldn't be in Ravenclaw.
"There's probably a lot," Shera mused lightly. "I don't know how we'd figure out which ones lead places though, especially with passwords and tickling portraits and all that..."

Harriet was in a little world of her own to be honest. The lake was her little place, and she really enjoyed it. It was her little place to escape, and just get away from all the stress of the castle. But for now, she was having a little relax. The girl looked up with a smile though, as she heard a voice she recognised. She hadn't see the slytherin girl in so long, before the end of the last term. So she was actually really excited to see her. Felicity lived so far away from them, and it made her sad. But she was glad that they got to be at school together now. She was also pretty glad that their were no hard feelings between them over Flynn. She was glad a boy hadn't come between them.
"Hey Felicity" The blonde beamed. She had missed her. "Oh. Of course" She wasn't used to people watching her, but some company was nice. She had often had painting dates with Olly last year, but he had graduated now. So having some company was fine. "I have a spare canvas if you wanna have a go?"

Daehyun followed her hand that ran through her hair with his eyes, only then remembering she'd been in the lake just minutes earlier. Wouldn't she be cold? Should he offer his robe? The last thing he wanted was for her to catch a cold on his watch, but he was soon distracted by her comment. "Me? On the team?" he sputtered out incorrigibly. "No, there's no way. Just-" he shook his head, "-no." Nuh-uh. "I prefer cheering for you." Regardless of how foolish he would look.
"Not really a zoo, but-I keep adopting until it'll probably turn into one." And his parents had already gotten over the phase of fighting him whenever he brought in a stray, finally accepting that there was no way around it. "So far I've got three crups that I've found, either lost or abandoned," he counted off his fingers. "Then there's Yin and Yang, the stray cats that I've fed until they refused to leave." Tee hee. "Our family owl is almost as old as I am," he said somewhat sadly. He'd wanted to bring Felix to Hogwarts, but then he'd thought he'd rather let him rest. "And I got Felicis after meeting you! She's up at the owlery. Oh, and-there's this group of imps in the back of our garden..." The ones that his mother desperately wanted gone, but he wouldn't let her drive them away. "They're cute."
She had to answer a riddle when she entered the common room? Sounded fair enough, it being Ravenclaw's common room, but... "But it's the same riddle, right?" ... right? He couldn't imagine if he had to answer a different one each time he wanted to go to the common room. He would probably never leave it, aside from classes. Or find someplace else to sleep.
As for the secret passageways, "Maybe we can find someone in the portraits who would tell us?" Surely there must be someone?

Forcing herself to return Hattie's smile (and doing a pretty good job of looking enthusiastic if she did say so herself), Felicity put her scarf on the ground beside her friend and made herself comfortable. She felt bad that she'd spent the summer in America, and had therefore not been able to see her - for only that reason she wished she'd cut her holiday short and returned to London, and her new home, earlier.
"Uh," Felicity blanched at Hattie's question, before shaking her head. She looked down at her fingers for a moment, before returning Hattie's gaze with somewhat of a grimace. "Nah, I'm not really good at that kind of thing." And she wasn't about to start trying now, not with her ridiculously talented friend there being... Well, being ridiculously talented. Nope, she wasn't in the mood for being rubbish today, just to admire.

Harriet just smiled. She could kind of understand why Felicity had wanted to be in America so much. If she went to school in a different country, she'd want to spend as much time in her home country as she could. It didn't stop her having missed Felicity though, and she was okay with feeling selfish about having her around. Hopefully the other girl wouldn't get too bored of her though, because that wouldn't be fun. But for now, she was going to enjoy her time with her friends. It wouldn't be long before they graduated, and then who knew when they would find time to see each other.
"You won't be any good if you don't practice" The blonde mused with a shrug. She could understand though. She knew she was good, but she didn't want to make her friends feel bad. "I could paint you...." She murmured, a little smile. "We never got around to doing that portrait last year"
