Default Welcome to Flourish and Blotts

Welcome to Flourish and Blotts

As you step into the bookshop from the south end of the street, the first thing you notice is the sheer amount of literature that abounds inside the shop. The walls are lined with book shelves everywhere you turn--in fact, not a square inch of blank wall space is visible, and the shelves themselves are packed to bursting with books of all manners of shapes, sizes, colors. Each book has writing down the spines--some of which are in English and some of which are in some strange script you cannot begin to understand. Even the floor is occupied with stacks of books, with just enough space for you to find your way to gather up course books for a year of magical schooling, or just to browse. The shopkeeper will be glad to help you with your purchase or to help you find the book you need.

Despite the seemingly chaotic stacking of books, the selection is very organized. The first floor is mostly dedicated to school books and books that are meant to expand one’s knowledge, all of which are nonfiction. Wish to learn about the history of Quidditch? We’ve got it. Want to explore the life of a famous person? No problem. Want to learn an obscure branch of magic? Chances are we’ve got that too. Also, near the front of the shop, a display of small, colored books can be seen. These are diaries and journals. A sign above the display states “Be sure to ask about customizing your journal!”

Our second floor, which can be reached by use of a staircase on the left side of the store, holds fiction books, written by both Muggles and wizards/witches. All genres can be found here; from historical to mysteries to science fiction. Books for children can also be found here.

Near the center of the shop is the counter where the shopkeeper can be found. Surrounding the counter is a display of newspapers, both Muggle and Wizard ones; including the Daily Prophet and the London Times. Magazines, such as Teen Witch Weekly, the Quibbler, and Quidditch, Quidditch, and More Quidditch! , can also be found here.

Also in the center of the shop sits a very large table stacked with books that are needed for each school term. A large sign hovers above it.

SCHOOL BOOKS HERE

These books are prepackaged and organized according to year. First years are all the way to the left and seventh years are all the way to the right; all other years are in the middle. If a customer merely needs a few books instead of the entire lot, an equally large table sits nearby. This table is organized into subjects offered at Hogwarts. Here, you can choose the books that are needed.

Towards the very back of the shop, there is a storage room which contains books that have not yet been unpacked and books that can be bought by special request. Only the shopkeeper is allowed in this room.

Tucked away in a corner of the shop is a fireplace. Surrounding the fireplace are two large tables and a number of chairs, with small lights floating over each chair. This is a place for you to read and relax if you wish to do so.

OOC : Please DO NOT, roleplay the shopkeeper. This shop is run by Elizabeth Chambers (SilverTiger). If you roleplay as the shopkeeper, your post will be deleted. Please feel free to RP yourself coming in, browsing around, making purchases, asking any questions you see fit. We will be checking in on the thread as much as we can but we can't be online 24/7 so please be patient with us.

Remember that Snitchseeker site rules and the Diagon Alley Rules apply at all times. If you have any questions, you can ask them in the Diagon Alley Questions thread.

Most importantly... please enjoy!!

{...A Brief History...}

Before Hogwarts, Maria grew up in an upper class family where she was neglected by her parents who didn't understand why any girl didn't want money or dresses. The blonde haired girl ended up secluding herself to one of the rooms in her whole house that enabled her to get away from the family she didn't fit into and escape into a new world. In this way, she found herself spending hours on end in the library where her nanny brought her milk and cookies from time to time.

After reaching the tender age of 11 and receiving her welcome letter, Maria found herself skipping off to Hogwarts in a search for an adventure of the kind she had read in her books back at home. Her studious mind set her apart from the rest of her family, especially in her sorting. The young girl also grew attached to the Hogwarts Library, something her family would never understand from her.

Having finished her Hogwarts studies with fairly decent grades, Maria set off to Muggle University where she ended up studying English Literature. This provided the young girl with the first, real experience with what it's like to be in the Muggle world and, having liked her uni life, Maria ended up applying for a job in a Muggle library in an attempt to pay off her student loans.

It was only as she was pouring over a book about magical creatures that she found herself missing her old, magical life where she was around people who were like her, in some sense. So, Maria ended up paying a visit to Diagon Alley. The notice of a job vacancy was enough to make the girl rush into the shop and apply.

{…Personality…}
Maria is, and has always been, a bookworm. Nothing satisfies the young woman more than pouring over different books for hours on end. And she could never grow tired of the dusty volumes she tends to surround herself with. This has made her grow a slightly strange attachment to some of her most prized possessions that no one else seems to understand.

From her time at her previous occupation, Maria has learnt to channel the extroverted side of her personality. Instead of hiding away behind some books like she normally would have done, the blonde tried her hardest to help those that needed her. Too much company around her isn't something she reacts to well, though.

Her slightly intelligent side has led her to believe that her opinion, and hers alone, is right. This might be a trait that she had gained from her upbringing and sometimes, the girl doesn't realise that she's being stubborn or that she's failing to realise that she could be wrong. Something else she hates is tight spaces. Just the feeling of being trapped in one space is enough to make her cower in fear.
