Professors in the Shadows We know a great deal about certain professors like Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Gilderoy Lockhart, Remus Lupin, Filius Flitwick etc. But how much thought have you given to the professors who also play an integral role at Hogwarts but we have not much information on their lives? Why do you think Charity Burbage was single? Which House was Professor Grubbly-Plank Sorted into? What was Professor Sinistra’s early life like? Was Professor Binns married? |
The other lesser known Professor's are SO fascinating to me based on the limited knowledge we have for them. I always wished there had been more information given on their lives, or even if they had gotten any more mentions so that I could even remember who was who and what information we DID have on them! On Charity Burbage, I would imagine she was single because the strain of having to be away from majority of the y e a r would be hard for any relationship. Which brings me to a question, were any of the Hogwarts Professor's in relationships at the time of their employment at the school? I know there was Madam Pince and Filch and they were both employed there so they didn't have the distance issue. The others I can only remember as single, widowed, or married after their employment ended. Thoughts? |

I've often wondered how relationships worked out given the length the professors are away. I'd like to think {and hope} that at least some professors and partners make the long distance thing work. |
Most of the professors during Harry's time at Hogwarts seem to be single, but maybe the lesser known ones like Sinistra were married during that time :hmm: I'm sure a lot of them could make the long distance work, especially with letters and two-way mirrors and all that, and I feel like they would be allowed to visit their families every so often during the term, but probably still hard on the relationship at times. I always enjoy trying to sort characters into the Hogwarts houses, so I also like imagining what houses these professors were in, assuming they went to Hogwarts. I don't think we were ever told what told house Charity Burbage was in, but I feel like I could see her in either Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. And I feel like Binns is definitely a Ravenclaw  |
I actually don't think long distance would have made relationships too difficult! I don't think professors truly stay at Hogwarts for the majority of the year. Sure, they have to teach and take care of students, but there could be a rotating schedule of sorts so that some professors return home in the evening while others supervise the kids at school. I believe it's canon that there are multiple professors teaching each class, so there should be enough adults around to maintain the rotating schedule, not to mention dozens of prefects and ghosts who also help to patrol corridors. Homes are only a Floo away, and there are fireplaces in all professors' offices. I'm getting off track buuut what I'm trying to say is that I think professors had a lot more time to invest in their personal lives than we know. For example, Minerva McGonagall lived in Hogsmeade with her husband while teaching at Hogwarts. She went to school every morning and returned home in the evenings. I think professors would be given the choice to live at Hogwarts or at home with their family, and if they choose to stay at school they would still have many means of communication to keep in touch with their partners, like Brig said. Also omg I forgot that Filch and Pince were together. xD Quote:
About houses: I also see Binns as a former Ravenclaw, though he certainly lacks the 'claw creativity. Grubbly-Plank could have been a Ravenclaw too - very competent, unbiased and respectful of different teaching styles (Hagrid's). :rsupporter: |
