Why?
The clear blue lake shimmered as a slight wind pushed against its surface. A bright glow reflected off the glimmering water. The sun was playing peek-a-boo with the fluffy clouds above. The colors of the leaves were turning orange, yellow and pink and were beginning to fall from the trees. Fall was approaching. The grass was warm and soft, as a boy leaned against a tree close to the lake. Every few minutes, the water would give off small rings, as the boy skipped rocks off its surface.
The boy was wearing the usual set of black robes. He had a frown on his pale face as his black eyes focused on the lake. He looked like he was concentrating on something, and that something was bothering him very much. Just to have something to do with his hands, he skipped rocks. He was alone and liked it at the moment.
But just as he was thinking about his isolation from everybody, a girl walked up to him. A small glimmer of joy crossed his eyes that were only visible for a second, before his face became emotionless.
“Why?” the girl asked.
“Why what?” the boy replied.
“Why?” she repeated.
“If you’re not going to tell me what you’re on about-“
“Why would you do this? Do you know what you have done? You are going to be on thin ice for the rest of your life! What if he decides to kill you! What are you going to get out of it? Nothing.”
“I didn’t do this for me.” He said slowly.
“Then why did you do it?”
“Its not important.” The seventeen-year-old boy said, standing up from his spot in the grass. The past four years he had to grow up really fast. He had become a whole different person, to his home life…to his second life at Hogwarts. He was never able to just enjoy life.
But this girl had changed his life from the first day he met her. She was the only thing on his mind all the time. Her smile alone could brighten up his day. But that smile, the one that had always given him hope over the years, was gone now as she looked at him with her sorrowful eyes.
“What do you mean it’s not important? How can I expect you to be the same guy I have known since I was little? What happened to my best friend? The one who was always there for me?” The girl asked desperately.
“He’s gone now.”
“Why?”
“Why do you keep asking me these questions?” he shot back at her.
“Because I care about you.” She said. The boy turned sharply and looked at her. She had deep emotion coated in her eyes and her lip had a small quiver.
“What about your
boyfriend?”
“Just because I have a boyfriend doesn’t mean I can’t care for somebody else.” She said quietly. The boy pondered on this. Could she really have feelings for him? Could they be “more than friends” feelings? Could these feelings be love?
“You need to leave,” the boy said, his heart breaking.
“What?” she asked, confused.
“We can’t be friends anymore,” he told her.
“Why?” she asked, a single tear falling down her gently face.
“Because we can’t.” he hated himself for ending their friendship, but it was the only way to protect her.
“Why are you doing this? My best friend would never do this. And he would never become a d-dea- I can’t even say it.” She said, more tears falling down her rosy cheeks.
The boy sighed deeply. Watching her cry was like watching an injured animal die slowly, or finding a little girl crying for her lost mommy. It was the most heart-breaking thing to see.
He let the blanket of black fall from behind his ears; not wanting to look the girl in the face, he hid behind his hair, looking down at his shoes. Guilt ran through his veins. He felt at any moment he was going to lose it. He was beginning to lose control.
“How did you find out?” he asked her quietly. He wasn’t denying what she said, but he was avoiding answering her question.
“I don’t even know how he found out. He told me in Herbology.” She said.
“That rat!” he thought to himself.
“I don’t get why still,” she said, begging him with her eyes to explain to her.
“You will never understand,” he muttered.
“Then make me understand.”
“No!” he shouted.
The girl jumped at his voice as four people walked towards them. The boy’s eyes darkened, as they grew closer. The girl, oblivious to the approaching boys, eyes were still shining with tears. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up, anticipating the upcoming fight, that he knew was going to come. The girl, seeing his body beginning to tense up, looked around and saw the boys. Fear flickered in her emerald eyes, but it wasn’t for herself. She immediately wiped her eyes, but the boy with glasses was already pulling out his wand.
“You promised, James,” the girl said quickly to the boy with glasses.
“I never promised to stop defending you,” the boy with glasses said, fire in his eyes.
“I don’t need to be defended,” She said, trying to stop the rising fight.
“He made you cry, Flowers,” the boy with wavy black hair and natural smirk on his lips said. The girl threw him a nasty look.
“Are you ok? If he is bothering you, we are here for you,” a boy with sandy brown hair and deadly pale skin said.
“Thanks but I’m fine,” she smiled sadly at him.
“Lily, how can you defend this slime ball after all he has done to you?” The boy with glasses asked angrily, looking at her intensely.
“Because fighting isn’t everything James,” she said simply. James began to relax and the grip on his wand loosened. She had that affect on people. But Severus couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
“He will never get that concept. Saint Potter not a fighter? That will be the day,” he taunted.
Wands were drawn and jinxes were shouted. Severus felt his curtain of black hair wave wildly as a red light shot past him. Lily shouted for the two of them to stop, but they kept fighting. Hatred was seen in both sets of eyes.
When James stalled, a smile went onto Severus face and he aimed a curse that would’ve landed James in the Hospital Wing for a long time. But before the curse could make contact, Sirius stepped in quickly and set a shield charm around the two of them. The spell ricocheted and hit the girl with auburn hair in the stomach. She fell back in a perfect arc and James jumped forward and caught her.
“Lily!” James shouted, holding her in his arms. Sirius and Remus went over to see if she was all right. Peter stayed in his spot looking intently at Severus. He knew what Severus was and Severus knew what he was. They both stared at each other before Severus turned and walked away.
Severus wanted to stay and make sure Lily was ok, but he couldn’t with Peter’s watching eyes. If the Dark Lord every found out that he and Lily were close friends, he would have her killed for sure. Just to set Severus straight. Peter was already getting suspicious, that was probably why he told her in the first place. Severus knew Peter had neglected to mention that he was a Death Eater also.
As Severus walked into the castle, he thought of everything him and Lily had talked about. He was a Death Eater now because of her. She didn’t sign him up or anything, but he knew it was the only way to protect her. If he worked for the Dark Lord, he would be able to keep her safe because he would know if the Dark Lord was ever after her. If that would ever to happen he would be able to warn her.
Severus loved Lily with all his heart. She was the only one who would talk to him when they were first years. When somebody made fun of him or pushed him around, she was always by his side to defend him. She made his life complete.
She asked him why. Severus asks himself that question everyday. Why does Lily have to be in Gryffindor? Why did he have to be in Slytherin? Why did he let himself fall for her so badly? Why couldn’t they just have their own happily ever after? Why?
