Gran and Daffodils
Grandma Longbottom had always been an ambitious woman. She raised her son to be the best man he could be, he fought against the Dark Lord and it took his and his wife’s sanity to protect the world and their son. After that Gran was left to raise Neville by herself, but that was okay. She wasn’t lonely anymore.
Through out the years though Gran was worried that Neville was going to be a squib, he didn’t show any magical talent, Gran was so relieved when he finally did. So Neville began school and Gran started to go lonely again. There was no one at home with her and she was left to interact with all the ‘old’ ladies. She certainly wasn’t one of them and she wasn’t going to sit at home and wait for Neville to get home from school.
It was then that Gran Longbottom decided she was going to teach and not just any class she was going to teach charms! She talked to the headmaster and convinced him to give her a chance at teaching. The current charms professor wasn’t too happy, but Gran has a way with her words and her wand and she was able to get her way.
And that’s where our story begins, with Gran Longbottom and her first day as a teacher.
Gran had spent the morning getting the Charms classroom sit up to the way she licked it. Daffodils were her favorite; she had gone all around the class room decorated it as she went with vases and vases of fresh daffodils. She had planned the lesson to be a fun one today. They were all going to work on creating daffodils out of nowhere. She was looking forward to seeing the children’s faces when the game into the room. It was going to be a great day.
Harry was prepared for class; he had heard there was going to be a new teacher this year, but had failed to hear who it was going to be. He hoped it wasn’t going to be any one too strict, he had been an average charms student and anyone strict was going to through a wrench into that plan for him. He queued up outside the class room with Neville, Ron, and Hermione. Neville was looking a little sweaty and scared. “Hey Neville are you okay?” Harry asked him, he looked like he was going to pass out at any given second. “My Gran is teaching charms this year.” Neville added in a whispered, he was going to be embarrassed once they all go inside. “And I just know the whole room is going to be covered in daffodils. Our whole house is.” Neville added again and looked down at the floor.
Harry didn’t have time to think, he didn’t know how to respond all he knew was he could not go into the room if it was covered with daffodils. He began to sweat and get dizzy; Harry was seeing double vision and sat down hard on the floor ready to pass out. “Neville did you say daffodils?” Harry asked praying that he heard wrong. “Yes…Harry are you okay?” Neville asked looking down at Harry. Ron and Hermione were looking at Harry like he was going crazy. Harry didn’t want that, but Harry couldn’t go into that room. He wouldn’t he refused.
The door opened and Gran stepped out. “Okay class come on in. Please take the first seat you see and pull out your wands.” This was it…Harry couldn’t do it. He took one step into the room saw hundreds and hundreds of daffodils in the room, every where he looked he saw them. The room was going black and the next thing Harry knew he was being slapped awake by Ron. “Hey mate…you passed out!! Wake up!” Ron get shouting at him. Harry didn’t want to open his eyes. He knew what he would see when opened them. “Ron, just let me lay here with my eyes close.” Harry told him not daring to open his eyes until he had to. He hoped that he could just be excused from class. “Harry dear, if you are not feeling well please go to the hospital wing, otherwise I’d like to continue with the lesson.” Harry heard Neville’s Gran say to the class. He wasn’t feeling well, not well at all, but if he left he would have to explain why. Harry very slowly opened his eyes and his whole body shuttered. He shut them again quickly. “You can continue with the lesson, I just need one more second and I’ll be okay.” Harry responded to her and stood up with his eyes still closed. He groped around for his desk and sat down. Harry slowly opened his eyes and stared straight ahead. He could just see those stupid flowers out of the corner of his eye and he was trying so hard to focus on it. “Okay class, now that Harry is feeling better, our lesson for the day.” Gran wasn’t giving them time to focus on the fact that Neville’s grandmother was teaching. She didn’t want to draw too much attention to that fact. She smiled at the class and stopped to stare at Neville for a second to make sure he was still doing okay. She pulled out her wand and with a quick flip a bouquet of daffodils appeared of thin air. “This is what we will be working on today!”
Harry watched in horror as even more daffodils appeared and he have a shriek like a girl shuttered and fainted again. When Harry came to this time Ron was looking at him with such a strange face. “Mate..I’m going to ask you this just once.” Ron looked at him almost laughing already before he even got an answer. “Are you afraid of those flowers? Because you fainted twice when you saw them.” Ron didn’t even wait he just busted out laughing as hard as he could. “Neville’s grandma is teaching Charms and you’re afraid of daffodils” Hermione added, it was the first thing she said all class period “What a day!” And the whole class Neville included began to laugh and the charms lesson was lost.
