19. Wand--Pre-Hogwarts--

“Now try this one.”

The eleven year old took the offered item from the wizened shopkeeper and gave it a swish much like he had done with the previous three. No such luck was to be had as the wand didn’t work for Simon any more then the others had and he and the wandmaker showed mirrored frowns as the elder went back to search for another option for his young customer. Simon took it as before giving it the same test only to be taken by surprise as it reacted to his touch.

50. Boggart
--4th Year--

The desk drawer shook slightly, the unreal sound come from the movement alerting those around that something was amiss. Simon was the first to stumble upon it, having been heading to the study to borrow a book from his father’s collection and moved closer to investigate.

What otherworldly creature was causing the ruckus, trying to escape?

The teen mused to himself, remembering a similar experience from class. Reaching a hand to grasp the draw pull, Simon slowly pulled…the drawer opening in response… to reveal the twitching nose of his brother’s rat, the creature glad to be free.

“Why hello Lucien.”

94. Allergic
--3rd Year--

“Achoo!”

Simon covered his mouth before blowing his nose in a tissue, wiping it when he was done. Folding it, he placed it in his pocket just before another sneeze escaped before he could do anything.

“Aaaaa-Choooo!”

He wished he knew what in the world was wrong. His nose was itchy and twitchy and probably red from blowing it so much.

“Sounds like someone has a cold,” Josh mused as he passed near the study tables.

“Scratch that…I must be allergic to something.”

“Homework?”

“Very funny, I believe that’s you.”

“Right…I knew it was one of us,” Josh teased laughing.

18. Whomping Willow
--6th Year--

Simon wandered out onto the grounds between classes, needing a breath of fresh air and a break from the stresses of classes and quidditch. Nothing like walk on the rolling grassy land that surrounded Hogwarts to clear the head…well other than being up flying. But team issues had been on his mind so that wasn’t going to help this time.

Woosh!

Simon felt a rush of air and watched as he was just barely missed by a wide branch. He stopped in place, only then realizing where he had gotten to.

He really needed to watch where he was going.

2. Muggle Studies
--4th Year--

“And so…instead of using owls and patronus’ to send messages, the telephone is their main source of communication. Any questions?”

Simon didn’t have any of his own and as the silence lingered after the question, it was pretty certain no one else did either. Thank Merlin for that, there had been enough before.

“Then…class dismissed.”

The fourth year got up from his seat, packing up his belongings and leaving the room with the rest. “Hey Mitch…You still up for that study session later?” he questioned a housemate as they passed each other.

“Maybe…I’ll call you,” he said with a laugh.

59. Ignore

“You and Kyle...” The words came out of Josh’s mouth confused and Simon almost wondered if it was because his friend remembered the girl was a Ravenclaw.

“Yes, me and Kyle.”

“…are a couple?”

“I don’t know,” Simon answered truthfully; they were both still unsure where things were leading.

“Are you or aren’t you. It’s not that hard to figure out.”

“I don’t know,” he repeated, “And you bugging me is not helping.”

“Well I’m not going to stop until you decide so there,” Josh remarked continuing.

Simon just shook his head and tried to tune his best friend out.

42. Portraits
--7th Year--

Simon took one last look at the Gryffindor locker room, taking in every inch. His eyes passing over the place in front where all the pictures of past players were hung, the captain paused. He couldn’t help thinking on how many past captains…past players even…had gone on to play professionally.

Even his rival Jacob was leaving school early for the game.

But that wasn’t him…his path lay elsewhere. He was a scholar first and THEN a quidditch player.

Finally spotting where his own picture had been added, a smile graced his face at the memories. It was enough for him.

98. Pajamas
--2nd Year--

He couldn’t sleep.

For some reason Simon couldn’t get comfortable in the new dorms…as if they were any different from last year other than being one more floor up. With a sigh, he headed down to the common room for a change of scenery, not bothering to throw his robe over his pajamas.

He was surprised to find he wasn’t the only one up, a roommate of his also awake. “Guess you can’t sleep either?” Matthew asked as he turned to face Simon.

“Yeah…what is it?” Simon mused gaining a shrug from the other boy.

“Warmer cause the heat rises?”

68. Roar
--6th Year--

You spin around thinking you hear the sound of a lion and wonder if you’re imagining things. What in Merlin’s beard? There can’t be lions in the castle…right?

But as you spot a group of Gryffindors you realize it came from them. So you ask the nearest student…a sixth year with a captain’s badge. “What’s going on? What was that sound?”

“Just celebrating our house cup win,” he answers with a smile. “Josh just decided we should let the school hear us for the kings of the jungle we are,” he explained with a laugh pointing to his best friend.

29. Pensieve
--Graduated--

A young beautiful woman dressed in white met her future husband at the end of the aisle. The groom, a man with a dirty blonde mop of hair was struggling against nerves as he watched her progression towards him. The wedding ceremony briefly took place, much faster this time around as if on fast forward.

With the appearance of clouds signaling an end of a memory, Simon pulled his head out of the bowl. He then looked to his companion, the older version of the girl from the memory, smiling at his bride of a decade before.

“Happy Anniversary, love.”

76. Zap
--3rd Year--

Simon had been trying his best to cast the new charm correctly. It wasn’t that hard but one needed to concentrate as they were casting to control it. Except having been accidentally nudged by a classmate, his spell went wonky. Simon hadn’t the chance or experience to be able to fix it so instead of hitting the target it wound up hitting another student.

“Sorry…” he remarked apologetically at the older student only to get the spell shot back at him before he could react. It felt like he had been lightly shocked with electricity.

So much for being understanding.

81. Depression
--Graduated--

The normally bright former Gryffindor was once more not himself, though it wasn’t the effects of a pirate ghost that had him out of sorts this time around…not directly.

For once in his recent life he was uncertain of himself and his future plans. His loss of control over a good deal of his last term was responsible. Could he be trusted as an auror? Should he follow that plan or find a new one that might be better suited for one who was foolish enough to get himself possessed?

No one could convince him that it wasn’t his fault.

39. Duel
--Graduated--

The two YATIs squared off in the training room. Their wands were raised in preparation but no spells had been cast as if each seemed to be waiting for the right moment to strike the other. They were roughly evenly matched, their knowledge of each other balancing ability.

“Rictisempra!” Josh the usually impatient one cast, aiming at his best friend.

“Protego! Expelliarmus!” Simon cast in quick succession, blocking one and aiming at his opponent, showing more thinking.

“Nice one Bennett,” Jax spoke from the sidelines watching the two young men. Both having the potential of being great aurors one day.

74. x-tinguish
--5th Year--

Simon smelt smoke.

And not the type found in the common room fireplace, especially seeing as they were nowhere near a common room or other classroom fireplaces. Something was up.

The Gryffindor looked around as he wandered, trying to trace the scent. Finally he spotted it, a bonfire with a certain Slytherin sitting in front of it and seemingly in a trance. The flames flickering wildly and threatening.

“Aquamenti,” he cast, shooting water from his wand and putting out the fire before it got too out of control. “Evelyn…Did anyone ever tell you that you might be a pyromaniac?”

96. Socks
--Graduated--

It was time to straighten his room, a batch of laundry ready to put away. Closing the door behind him Simon went to work, folding his clothes. He was about to pick up his next piece when he thought the pile had moved. The former Gryffindor paused in his reach waiting to see if it happened again.

There it was…the socks moved once more.

“Sky…Come out come out where ever you are,” he called, reaching gently under the pile and finding his fingers touching something fluffy.

“There you are missy,” he said with a chuckle as he freed her.

“Meow.”

34. Parselmouth
--6th Year--

Simon headed down to the pitch to set up things for practice. His broom in hand, he had just reached the corridor to the courtyard and about to start out when he spotted a familiar munchkin cat.

But it wasn’t the fact the feline had escaped the common room that had stopped him in his tracks but what he was seeing in front of him. Walnut was in full defensive mode, hissing at a snake that had apparently also snuck around, the reptile appearing attentive and calm instead of ready to attack.

“Wow Walnut. I didn’t know you spoke snake.”

56. Fight
--Pre Hogwarts--

“Mooommm…” a young boy’s voice yelled through the house causing said woman to look up from her writing. “Simon, you don’t need to yell if you just look for me.”

“Sorry,” he remarked following his mother’s voice to the library. “Jonathan won’t take me to Diagon Alley with him. He promised.”

“I promised him tomorrow,” the teenager spoke up making his appearance. “Today Marcus, Tai and I were going to go alone for certain things.”

“You said today.”

“I said tomorrow.”

“Boys…enough.” Naomi Bennett interrupted. “Tomorrow you will go seeing as I seem to remember someone promising to help me.”

70. Teem
--6th Year--

The Flying Final.

As captain it was wordlessly expected he would ace it with flying colors and all was well for most of the interesting exam. All of a sudden however, the air was filled with enlarged candy as the piñatas exploded. Getting hit by something hard, Simon found himself losing control of his broom and falling towards the ground quickly as he struggled to right himself. It was difficult amongst all the various objects and fellow airborne students and the ground was coming fast. And right below him was Professor Vindictus overlooking the proceedings and unaware.

Please Professor…please move.

31. Dress Robes

Simon adjusted his collar for the umpteenth time, the cloth feeling restrictive to the younger man.

“Stop fiddling with them. It only makes things worse,” Jonathan warned, working with his own tie from behind him as they stood in front of a mirror.

“Why are they needed?” Simon questioned, his youthful face wrinkling unpleased as he looked over his shoulder at his brother.

“Dress robes are always needed at weddings,” the eldest explained matter of factly.

“Bad rule…there should be a choice.”

“Try telling that to mum. But then I doubt the guests would be pleased with an unclothed groom.”

3. Transfiguration
--5th Year--

He shivered in the coldness of the dorm despite the smoldering embers that still remained in the grate. It seemed to be a particularly chilly winter evening and his bed linens just weren’t enough; his sleeplessness clearly a result of it.

Simon sighed, joining the sound of his dorm mates’ snores. Mates that apparently weren’t having the same problem. Suddenly he remembered something and jumped up, struggling to keep quiet as he rummaged through his trunk.

Jackpot…the Gryffindor finally had found his scarf-turned-blanket from last year’s class taught by Professor Kingsley. Adding it to his bed, he slipped inside.

Ahh…Warmth…finally.

14. Hogwarts, A History
--7th Year--

Barnabus the Bloody…pirate.

Simon had finally found the entry he had been looking for, the entry that might hopefully lead to additional insight into the happenings of the past months. He figured the library would be the best place to look especially after learning about a past assignment.

“Find everything you were looking for?” Madame Donovan’s voice spoke up as the librarian approached. Coincidentally just as his eyes passed over mention of Charlotte.

“ I think so,” he answered looking up at her, exchanging a knowing look…awkward look between them. They had both been through the same troubles after all.

100. Homework
--7th Year--

Mandreina House.

Simon didn’t know how he came up with the name, knowing no one of a surname remotely similar nor read it anywhere but there it was. The name of the made-up famous witch and the wizarding house she developed as part of his assignment for History of Magic.

The seventh year started to sketch out a coat-of-arms, choosing to use colored pencils rather than ink for his work to keep from bleeding into each other. The curly-lined details of purple edging resting closely against the larger patches of teal.

There…finished.
A nicely rendered design complete with resting peacock.

5. Astronomy
--2nd Year--

The second year didn’t know quite how to take this new professor of theirs.

He spit when he spoke, he made sounds and smells out of areas you really shouldn’t especially in polite company. And to top it all off…he didn’t really know the subject he was trying to teach.

So why was he treated like he was Merlin’s gift to Hogwarts? At least he was in his own mind? Simon had no clue, but he figured this year was going to be a long term. Ten months learning…or not learning under the man.

Everyone…say hello to Mr. Berty Borr.

92. Chocolate
--PreHogwarts--

“Simon Avery Bennett…” his mother called up the stairs causing him to gasp and quickly hide the evidence.

“Yes mum?” said young boy responded.

“Did you get into the stash I had hidden for Halloween?” Naomi Bennett inquired as she walked down the hall towards her son’s bedroom.

“No…no I didn’t,” Simon answered turning to face her as she came through the door and trying to appear innocent.

“Oh really…you didn’t?” she questioned again, gaining a shake of the head from the guilty party. Guilty as he was caught red-handed. Or rather brown-mouthed from the melted candy in question.

Busted.

12. Charms
--6th Year--

It was a free-for-all.

Chocolate frogs everywhere and in any color. The object was to catch their own and keep the others away from other players. Simple…if there weren’t so many hopping, jumping and just MOVING amphibians to go along with the large amounts of moving students of all ages and sizes.

Oh boy.

“Immobulus!” Simon cast at the nearest red one he could find at the moment. Luckily it hit and the frog froze, the sixth year moving to add it to his bag. However before he could, a Hufflepuff had taken the opportunity to banish his captive.

Bummer.

86. Daring
--4th Year--

“Me? You want ME on the team…for the game?”

“Sure,” Brant confirmed with a nod of his head. “You do like to fly, right?”

Nod.

“You’ve played before?

Nod again, though only with friends or family really and never in a real game that counted.

“Then you’ll do fine. I really need another player for Saturday’s game,” the captain commented, his arms folded casually as he awaited a response.

Would he do it…yes. Would he be nervous the whole time…most certainly.
“Alright,” Simon finally replied accepting the challenge, “I’ll play.”

Josh always said he needed more excitement in his life.
