Homework ______________________ Theme # 1: Herbology Crossing a pond, blindfolded and using wobbly lily pads as stepping stones, is never a good idea. Especially when you do not want to do the thing in the first place, and have had your vision STOLEN from you without any warning whatsoever. Well, a bit of warning, maybe. But that wasn't really a warning, you know. Warm. The fireside was warm. List three things you learned in today's lesson. Shaking his head, Fyo dipped his quill into his favourite inkwell, and pressed it to the surface of the parchment he was working on. 1) Never attend Herbology. |
Theme # 87: Plaid Theme # 87: Plaid What had happened to Xyntheshia's taste? Fyo held up the shirt that his mother had sent him, wincing as his eyes wandered down its thick plaid. The owl that had delivered the thing [it had been wrapped up in brown packing and stuffed with cotton - the shirt, not the owl] stood by a crumbling window, and gave a merry hoot. It was not that Fyo did not like plaid. It was just that he did not like it when it came in the form of a red shirt that read "I'm this century's hotstuff. Who are you?" |
Theme # 9 - Defense Against the Dark Arts Theme # 9: Defense Against the Dark Arts Defense Against the Dark Arts class, lesson one. Part Wild West action hero stuff, part magic - Fyo peered into the box full of holsters they had just been told to help themselves to, and wondered what kind to pick. He was not exactly fascinated by the wrist ones, but the hip holsters looked fun. He might have been the hero of a Western type movie, the way he strapped it on, and stuffed his wand into it. Only, he was pretty sure them heroes did not have to deal with the feeling that their holsters would drag down their jeans. |
Theme # 10 - Arithmancy Theme # 10: Arithmancy ARITHMANCY! If you knew Fyodor Balouch, you knew that the subject was one of the loves of his life. It was, no doubt, something that dominated his school-bag, his study-table, his bookshelf and, often, his mind. No surprise then that he was now half skipping towards class, all geared up for the first Arithmancy lesson of the term. Good to be back, good to be back after the summer! Nothing could stop him now, no sirree. He was the INDESTRUCTIBLE ARITHMANCY DUDE! He bounced into the classroom - - And tripped and fell, flat on his face, in the doorway. |
Theme 88 - Sweet Tooth For MattFishie, who picked the theme. Theme 88: Sweet Tooth Some of us admit it, and some of us do not, but the fact is, we all have our sweet teeth. Our fondness for candy or pie or mint or dark chocolate, or our tendency to eat more, flavoured biscuits than, say, the guy [or cat or ghoul] next door. Fyodor Balouch had his sweet tooth, too. He liked the expensive taste of Godiva’s milk chocolate; the chewable pink of coloured, candy floss; the tasty crunchiness of a wafer; and the sweetness of a well-baked, ice-cream cake. But, above all, his sweet tooth loved his Butterfly Candy. |
Theme 68 - Roar Theme 68: Roar Sand. If there was one [non-living] thing, on the face of Earth, that Fyodor Balouch loved as much as Arithmancy, it was sand. Sand with its crunchy, powdery feel; sand with its sparkling, brown-to-white hue; and sand that slipped through your fingers when you scooped it up in your hands, and grazed the soles of your feet when you walked along the beach, as the sun went down in hazy orange, light. - And Hogwarts had a Sandbox. “I am the Sand Monster,” he announced, covered in the thing from head-to-toe as he attempted to scare Lissy. “Rawr.” |
Theme 7 - Care of Magical Creatures Theme 7: Care of Magical Creatures “Oof.” Fyo wiped at his mouth with the sleeve of his Grryfindor robe as, trying to catch the niffler that their Care of Magical Creatures professor had let loose only a minute or two ago, he half-tripped, half-slipped across the earthen, classroom floor. The niffler, quick to take its lucky chance, escaped and, rubbing his shoulder where it had hit the ground, Fyo stood up again. Bad niffler, bad. Well, bad or not, he was going to catch that cute, two-eyed thing. And find some awesome, fat gold coins with its help once he had done so, too. |
Theme 52 - Bore Theme 52: Bore Comets in paper platters! The best part about Astronomy labs were all the interesting things they got to make and, his eyes savouring the two spoonfuls of sand he would have to use in this lesson, Fyo found it hard to restrain himself from beaming broadly. Reaching out to grab a plastic bag, he cut it open with unmatched enthusiasm, checking himself from humming as he began to line his large, mixing bowl. This class rocked. Not because of what they studied there, but because there just could not be anything boring about a lesson that required use of sand! |
Theme 31 - Dress robes Theme 31: Dress robes “Fyo? You ready? Mum says we’re getting late.” Affectionately known as ‘Nova,’ this was young Xion Balouch who was, at the moment, peeking into his room, partly because the door was ajar, and chiefly because they were getting late for a dinner they had to attend. “Sorta,” he said, stepping into the light. “How do I look?” Nova's eyes travelled down him and then – quite suddenly – the curly-haired thing gave a loud bark of laughter. “What’s so funny?” Fyo asked, clearly offended. “These dress-robes make you look like a girl,” she replied with a grin. |
Theme 17 - Cauldron Theme 17: Cauldron “Nova, give it back!” “But I want it!” “It’s my cauldron, not yours.” “SO WHAT?” Xyntheshia Khan-Balouch peeked into the living room, only to see Fyodor holding one end of his new cauldron. A four year old Nova held the other end, tugging at it with all her might. “Fyo, Nova, what’s going on?” she asked tiredly. “Can’t you two ever give it a rest?” “He won’t share his cauldron!” Nova screamed. “It’s mine, not hers,” Fyo insisted angrily. “Oh forget it,” Xyntheshia said, rolling her eyes and leaving them to fight it out. |
Theme 4 - Ancient Runes Theme 4: Ancient Runes How two bits of line could hold the power of wealth or nature or whatever, dazed him. Seated next to his father with an Ancient Runes textbook in his lap, Fyo stifled a yawn and rubbed his eyes. “So Fehu is, like, a big cattle?” With great difficulty, Christian Balouch checked an exasperated sigh. His son was good at study – of that Christian had no doubt. But that said son was going to flunk Ancient Runes – of that he had no doubt, either. “Umm, no. Cattle is one of it is meanings.” But Fyo had fallen asleep in his seat. |
Theme 20 - Hogsmeade Theme 20: Hogsmeade Hogsmeade: From its owl-filled post office to its laughter-filled joke shop, Fyo had a fondness for each and every place in the all-magical village. It reminded him of ice-creams and fights and dinners, all wrapped up in weekends full of sunshine and snow and tears and laughter. As Nova put it – Like a sandwich with plenty of good chicken. And that was true, too. The memories Fyo had, associated with the pretty place, were too many to count. - His first box of peppermint pies, his first coconut ice, and his first kiss, to list a few. |
Theme 100 - Homework Theme 100: Homework People were surprised when they learned how much Fyodor Balouch loved homework. He had, you could say, a passion for the thing. Today, though, he was not in the mood for it. He had not only gone to sleep late and woken up early, he had also managed to miss the day’s breakfast. No wonder, then, that he did not feel like doing that twelve inch long assignment that was due today. So he got out his quill and a piece of fresh parchment, and made the best excuse in the world: Sorry, professor, but my crup ate my essay. |
Theme 15 - Room Theme 15: Room “WHAT?” Fyodor Balouch’s jaw dropped open the moment he stepped into his room, back home after a good term at Hogwarts. There were purple flowers running along the walls, backed by pink paint to match. Mounds of brightly coloured tulips were piled on his bed, and a nest of songbirds peeked at him from the window. “Oh yeah, I sort of forgot to tell you –” Xynthesia said, following him inside. “Nova has been using your room, for a while. If you could just carry those flowers downstairs, honey, you’d have a lovely night’s sleep. Good night, darling.” |
Theme 98 - Pajamas Theme 98: Pajamas Once his mother had left, Fyo checked a scream of frustration. His room, he would set right. But Nova – he was going to paint hers black with SKULLS all over it, the first chance he got. Forget it, he told himself. Be calm. Calm. Yes. Sleep would do him some good. Wiping his brow – he was beginning to perspire, from all the anger and tension – Fyo walked over to his cupboard and threw its doors open, ready to get out a pair of pajamas. Only to see that all the clothes he had left behind had been painted baby pink. |
Theme 32 - Common room Theme 32: Common room Having entered the warm, plushy Gryffindor common room five minutes earlier, Fyo had just fallen into a light doze when a scream of sorts awakened him. “What happened?” he asked, waking up with a start, rubbing his sleepy eyes, and looking around, only to see Naomi shouting her head off. “The professors are talking about moving the Slytherins in here,” she announced and, suddenly, all of Fyo’s drowsiness had vanished into thin air. The Slytherins? Sure, the flood had been terrible, and he felt sorry for them. But in the Gryffindor common room? A little unsurely, Fyo bit his lip. |
Theme 2 - Muggle Studies Theme 2: Muggle Studies Fyo had always wanted to be a halfblood: Being pureblood annoyed him, because he felt he had not had the advantage of being, as he grew up, at ease in both the magical and muggle worlds. When people asked Fyo why he had taken Muggle Studies, this was what he told them. What he left out was that that his father had refused to get him another of those SHINY! setphones – err, cellphones – after he had smashed the last one’s screen, and announced that there would be no more muggle gadgets for him until he learned to handle them. |
Theme 27 - Owl Theme 27: Owl “I’ve sent Nova off with Chris,” Xyntheshia Khan-Balouch announced as she walked her son into Eyelop’s Owl Emporium. “You had better hurry and get your owl before she comes back, or she’ll want one, too.” Not replying, Fyo let his eyes wander over the dozens of owls in the place. Short and fat with sharp beaks; snow-white with emerald eyes; tall and brown with colourful claws. Then his gaze landed on a plump, bluish owl sitting in a corner, its eyes aglow with something like eccentricity. “That’s my owl,” he said with a nod. |
Theme 5 - Astronomy Theme 5: Astronomy Add a dash of ammonia. Nearly halfway through making his pretty comet, Fyodor Balouch was now squinting to get a better look at the instructions written on the neat, not-so-little board in the Astronomy observatory. He nodded to himself as he took them in, reaching for the ingredient in question, and cheerfully letting his mixing bowl have some of it. As he worked, he wondered how long it would take for him to finish the comet – and how long for ButterflyCandy to find that he was in class and, supposing if his stars were pretty lucky, join him. |
Theme 93 - Chicken Theme 93: Chicken Mm, this chicken is good. Right now, Fyo was seated at the Gryffindor house table, and he had just spotted – and loaded in his plate and taken a quick bite of – the steaming dish of chicken served there. The taste spread in his mouth, tantalizing his taste buds and making him want more. He just HAD to tell someone how good this thing was! “Why don’t you try some?” he asked Zeke, calling the older Gryffindor’s attention towards the delicious dish. Only to zip his mouth when he was told that the Gryffindor in question was a vegetarian. |
Theme 85 - Snappish Theme 85: Snappish “Now, now, Fyo –” Xyntheshia Khan-Balouch began, trying to calm down her eldest child and only son. “I want a bit of dragon for my birthday, and that’s final,” Fyo said stubbornly, crossing his arms against his chest. “I don’t care if it’s a nail or a scale or a tooth. I just want a bit of dragon, alright?” “But, Fyo, dragon – err – bits are really hard to come by,” Xyntheshia said desperately. “How about I just get you a nice, new broom?” “I want a bit of dragon,” Fyo replied, snappish and turning to leave. |
Theme 59 - Ignore Theme 59: Ignore “Aww, honey,” Xyntheshia called after him, but Fyo had already huffed out of the room. If his father could have a dragon tooth, all encased in glass and locked up in his bedroom closet, why could he, Fyo, not have something similar? This was unfair, I tell you! Of course, he was choosing to ignore the fact that the tooth his father owned had been found in some ruins he had visited, and that it was not exactly easy to get dragon bits – you can’t go up to a dragon and tell it to give you one – but stillll. |
Theme 16 - Dragonhide gloves Theme 16: Dragonhide gloves Four days later. His birthday! Fyo hardly found time to cut the cake, he was so enthusiastic about the pile of SHINY! – not to mention colourful – presents eagerly [he liked to suppose] awaiting him in the other room. “Here you go,” Xyntheshia said, calling him over. “It had better be a dragon bit,” Fyo replied, as she handed him a beautifully-wrapped, red-and-gold box. “It is,” Xyntheshia responded cheerfully. “Go on, open it.” YAY! Too happy for words, Fyo pulled off the wrapping with amazing speed, quickly opening the box to find – – A pair of golden, dragonhide gloves. |
Theme 57 - Gape Theme 57: Gape Finally – the year’s examination results! Quote:
Because, you know, the last time he had handed in an Ancient Runes assignment, it had been returned with a huge ‘P’ scrawled on its top left. |
Theme 3 - Transfiguration Theme 3: Transfiguration As the professor announced the day’s Transfiguration homework, Fyo registered it with mild surprise on his face: This was, by far, one of the easiest bits of homework he had come across in his time at Hogwarts. All they were supposed to do was to practice the vanishing spell on something that was – and the professor had stressed this bit – not important. This would be a piece of cake! Now he just needed to figure out if there was a vanishing spell strong enough to vanish the Ancient Runes classroom, and whether that came under the heading of “important.” |
