Theme # 01: Herbology

It was that time of the year, again. The time of the year when snow peeks out, and moisture freezes, and twilight looks like midnight.

When Christmas is about to arrive, and nothing can dampen one's spirits.

Harry Potter pressed his face against the windowpane, and stared out into the street. He was ten, an age that guaranteed he had still not come in contact with Hogwarts or Herbology or Headmaster Dumbledore, and little flakes fell through the air.

"You. Boy."

He turned round, to look at Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley, huddled together on a sofa.

Family?

Theme # 76: Zap

Teddt had no idea why he had tried to make Victoire learn how to use a microwave. Her knowledge of muggle artifacts was limited - and he realized, now, that he should not have tried to change that.

But he had thought she might find it fun.

"You alright?" He asked, as he removed her from the kitchen - literally. Lifted her off her feet, and relocated her to the dining room. Because the kitchen was now full of smoke, a faint, electrical hum, and the 'zap-zap' of a machine that had malfunctioned terribly.

"I don't.... know," Victoire said, dazed.

Theme # 77: Cheerful

"You seem cheerful, today."

Lysarc looked up. He was exceedingly handsome, and a little arrogant. But even Victoire could not deny that her son had class. Though deny it, she did. In front of him, at least.

"He doesn't need an ego-boast," she often told Teddy - and she was right.

"You sound suspicious," Lysarc returned, now.

"Of course I do." Victoire gave him a pointed look. He would know what that meant. That she had every right to be suspicious. "What are you so cheerful about, then?"

"Ask dad," Lysarc suggested.

That only made her even more suspicious.

Theme # 78: Author's choice

The little 'sibling' had arrived, and Lysarc stood in a corner of the bedroom, as his parents cuddled the small bundle. For all of his ... reservations about this new addition to his family, Lysarc had to admit that the baby was almost cute. Almost.

And, of course, Lysarc had no intention - now or later - of picking the thing up, or giving it cuddles and chocolate chip cookies. Wait, do you even give babies chocolate chip cookies? Or do they get sick because of it, like cats?

"Can babies taste sugar?" He asked, out loud.

Teddy and Victoire stared at him.

Theme # 79: Author's choice

"Can I have that quill, can I, can I?"

The bright-eyed girl was six. Teddy often said she had inherited the beauty from her mother, but Victoire disagreed - her daughter's clear, blue eyes and blonde hair were beautiful, but unlike hers.

"Of course you can." This was Lysarc, who had scooped up his little sister in his arms. Twenty now, he was on one of his visits to his parents, this week - and, as he picked up the fancy quill for his sister, Teddy and Victoire exchanged a glance.

It is fascinating, how much time can change people.

Theme # 80: Author's choice

There was little light, at the table, but that was intended: the candles burned low, to beautiful effect. The table, that seated four people, supported a beautiful vase, as a centerpiece.

"You father and son are quite the little devils, aren't you?" Victoire asked. Her chair had pulled itself back, when she had stepped into the room, and settled into place on its own, once she had sat down. She could not deny how perfect the arrangements were.

"Indeed," Lysarc said. "But you can't deny these devils can prepare an amazing setting for a family dinner."

Victoire laughed.

Theme # 81: Depression

Depression - there was no other word for it. Mr. Dursley, hands clasped like a little girl's, teeth gritted like an angry ole man's, sat at the dining table, quite, quite depressed.

"I don't know what we can do about the kid." Petunia sounded nervous, as she spoke. "I - I had no idea something like this could happen, Vernon. You must understand, I never gave my sister the impression that -"

"Dang your sister!" Vernon rose to his feet. Then his voice softened. "Don't trouble yourself, Petunia. We'll do something about the kid. We'll be fine."

Theme # 82: Careful

The care they had to take, frustrated Vernon sometimes. The first letter had arrived a while back, quite a while back, and he had torn it, thought that that would be the end of the matter.

Had they not been careful enough, these past eleven years? They had felt that they would be that in the future too, sufficiently enough to choke any odd news that the boy might hear, or receive. But the letters. The letters would not stop.

"Daddy?" It was Dudley. "You alright, daddy? You look like you've swallowed a live fish."

"Shut up," Vernon snapped.

Theme # 83: Fearful

It was a moonlit night, one before the world saw the demise of Voldemort, or the fearful - some said liberating - deaths of James and Lily Potter. Number four, Privet Drive, was alight, clean and warm, in perfect order.

"I wonder if we'll have a son, or daughter," Petunia Dursley said, tones affectionate as she rested her head against her husband's shoulder.

"That doesn't matter," Vernon said. His voice might have sounded gruff to some, but Petunia saw the quiet affection, underneath it. "Doesn't matter, as long as you're happy."

Petunia smiled, an almost soft smile.

Theme # 84: Angry

Try as he might, Dudley could not come to accept Harry Potter as a part of his family. His cousin was too different, from his odd last name to the scar across his forehead.

"You get your hands off my books, Potter!" The ten year old screamed, tones livid with anger, as he stepped into the living room, and saw Harry peeking at the new package of books that had arrived, an hour ago, by mail.

"I didn't touch them," Harry said, taking a step backwards. "I only looked."

"Dad says you have no right to look," Dudley declared.

Theme # 85: Snappish

Petunia looked up, as Vernon stepped into the dining room, tie in place, hair brushed back. She had set breakfast on the table, but he did not help himself to it, only bid her a quick goodbye, and headed out of the house, towards his car.

She sighed, as she sat down at the table. Life had changed, since the arrival of that boy. He was a few weeks old, now, almost the same age as her own son, and it seemed to her that, the older the Potter boy grew, the more snappish her husband became.

Life had changed.

Theme # 86: Daring

There was nothing special about being a ten year old Harry Potter: he was as common as clay; a kid who was often bullied, because of a cousin who looked twice his size.

"You wouldn't dare" or "You aren't daring enough," were the two sentences Dudley said most often to him, these days - and he was right. Harry knew he was right. Harry didn't dare, Harry wouldn't dare.

Because, when he sat down at the table in the Dursleys' house, he knew fully well that they made a family he had never been a part of.

Theme # 87: Plaid

Petunia should have seen it coming - the tantrum her son had proceeded to throw, at that new plaid T-shirt. He was fifteen -- and he still acted like he was eleven.

"That's enough, Dudley." Her tones were firm. "Wear that T-shirt if you want to. If you don't, get rid of it. You're more than capable of taking care of your own clothes."

Dudley was stunned by this dismissal. He was used to being pampered, being taken care of. He glanced at his father, as if for support, but Vernon did not come to his rescue.

Theme # 88: Sweet tooth

Nothing seemed appropriate. Vernon paused in front of the glass display, taking in the jewellery. Petunia liked expensive items, but she had enough gemstones. She would not want more, for her birthday.

The question was, what to take for her?

He pondered over this, on his way to work, that day. He pondered over this, on his way back from work, that day. He pondered over this at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner, all the time. At long last, he decided to take the common route, and purchase a giant box of chocolates, for her.

To indulge her sweet tooth.

Theme # 89: Past

Looking back on his past, Vernon was surprised to find how little it shocked him, now.

That night they had found that baby, at their doorstep. That giant, who had arrived to take him away. The meeting that that boy had ruined.

Yes. Vernon Dursley had taken care of that kid. Tried to make him a part of his family.

But, looking at the sleeping, white-haired woman next to him, thinking of the son who now owned businesses in France, Vernon Dursley realized he had not been successful.

Because Harry Potter was not, had never been, one of them.

Theme # 90: Present

"Thirty-three presents! But I had forty-one, last time!" Ten year old Dudley sounded quite furious, ready to throw another of his tantrums.

"Now, now, Dudderz." Petunia was all over her son, at once. Trying to hug him, trying to calm him down. "We'll get you something else. Do you want something else?" Foolish question, the black-haired boy in the corner thought to himself. Of course 'Dudderz' wanted something else. "What else do you want, darling?"

"Come on, sonny." Vernon thumped his son, on the shoulder. "Let's get you something even bigger and better."

Harry shrugged.

Ten for a ship - for one of my interpretations of the word 'family' - that I have grown to cherish. Regulus Black, and the non-canon character, Geraldine. I first touched upon the ship in my SS100 on the Black Family. <3

Theme # 91: Future

If Geraldine had known, then, what the future held for the two of them, she would have been shocked into silence, stunned into perpetual quietude. But she did not. The part-veela, as she brushed hair out of her eyes, knew only that she loved him, that he tasted better than chocolate, that he meant to her more than anyone - anyone - ever had.

"I don't know what I would do without you." Her accent had acquired that cultured, French touch it tended to, when she paid little - or no - attention to how she spoke. "I don't know, Regulus."

Theme # 92: Chocolate

"Close your eyes, first."

"Nooo." Geraldine pouted. "I shall not."

Regulus grinned. He was handsome - an ordinary thing, in the Black family - and, in the dim light, she could make out the curl of his lips as they tugged up, into the grin. "Please?" He asked, drawing her closer to himself.

Of course she gave in. Of course.

He placed a hand on her eyes, gently leading her on; and, when he finally removed it, her large eyes widened. "Regulus!" She wrapped her arms around him. It was not the massive chocolate fondue fountain but the thoughtfulness, that she cherished.

Theme # 93: Chicken

She met him, at the door. Dinner out was a common concept, for the two of them - dinner 'in,' as she had called it, a relatively new one.

"Your parents aren't going to arrive on the scene, and shake the daylights out of me, are they?" Regulus asked, as he stepped into her house, and took the dining hall in - the table was already set.

"My parents like you, Regulus," she said, her cheeks dimpling as she smiled - she knew fully well that he was not actually worried, about her parents' reaction.

"So, what's on the menu?"

"Chicken."

Theme # 94: Allergic

AAACHOOOO.

Regulus sneezed, again. Geraldine, standing by his bed, winced. "Regulus." She sat down, placed the bouquet on his chest. "I had no idea you were this sick."

"I - aachooo!"

Geraldine was alarmed, now. "No need to speak," she said, placing a hand on top of the bouquet.

"No - I'm not - achoo - sick, Geraldin it's the - aaa-aaaCHOOOO."

Geraldine frowned. "You'll be alright," she told him, firmly. "Sooner than you know it."

"A-ACHOO."

"You -"

"No!" Regulus sat up, grabbed the bouquet, and threw it away. "I'm allergic to - ACHOO - these FLOWERS, Ger!"

She blinked.

Theme # 95: Snowball

It was the last winter that they shared. Spent in each other's company. Regulus knew that it might be the last one; that the next year might not be this generous. Or, more importantly, might not exist in the first place.

Geraldine knew, too.

Neither of them spoke of it, almost as if by mutual agreement. They laughed, they cried, they hugged, they worked, they made good use of that dark winter to be together, to have snowball fights, to dine at home. To share the secrets of a lifetime; perhaps, perhaps more than a lifetime.

But they knew.

Theme # 96: Socks

Her socks. Her beautiful socks.

"REGULUS BLACK!"

She opened the door, when he did not respond to the knocks, and found him sitting up on his bed, shirtless. "I didn't do it!" He said, at once.

She held up her socks. "WHEN did you find the time to transfigure them into ... duck socks?" She asked. Her cheeks were red with cold - she had apparated there as soon as it was light. "I can't believe you were doing THIS, when I was cooking dinner for you, last night. You wait till I tell your mother!"

Regulus grinned, in response.

Theme # 97: Dictionary

The present he most wanted to open, was Geraldine's. She had said she was sick, would not be able to make it to his home, to help him celebrate his birthday. Regulus felt like a child who had been told he could not have candy.

But she had sent a present.

He unwrapped it, the moment he could, and -- and found it was a dictionary. Stunned, he apparated to her house, reached out to ring the doorbell. Only to find her throw open the door, and fling her arms around his neck.

"I knew that would make you come!"

Theme # 98: Pyjamas

This was her idea of shopping.

Regulus regretted the moment he had offered to take her to the new market - the stuff available there, he had heard, was quite exotic. Expensive, yet, but top-notch.

But, so far, Geraldine had chosen only an ancient-looking quilt and a pair of striped pyjamas - the kind that she would not wear, in a million years. He simply could not understand what had come over her.

"Geraldine."

She halted, in her tracks. "Yes?"

"Are you actually going to wear those?"

"No. But you said I could waste your money, if I want to."

Theme # 99: Newspaper

No news, someone had once told her, is good news. This is as far as I will get to no news, Geraldine thought, as she crunched up the evening newspaper. There was nothing in there - a few ads, a huge poster, but nothing special.

"Something special, this evening?" Regulus asked, as he stepped into the lounge, cheeks red as if from the cold, hair ruffled, rather strongly windswept - she guessed he and Sirius had been at it again, a good, tough chaser-chaser game of Quidditch.

She tossed the newspaper into the rubbish bin.

"You," she said, matter-of-factly.

Theme # 100: Homework

"I'm glad we don't have kids."

It was a quiet evening, and the two of them sat on the veranda. Regulus, quite lazy right now, looked up at her words, lips tugging up into a huge grin.

"Sometimes, you stun me, Ger."

The part-veela glanced up. "Those kids!" They had returned, half an hour ago, from a party hosted by an old couple - with five kids. "They're.... spoiled." Kids, Geraldine liked. Spoiled kids, she did not.

"Oh, but think of all the perks," Regulus cut through. "Broken dishes, cleaning up, evil homework -"

"REGULUS BLACK!"

He grinned.
