Little is known of Aurora Sinistra other then her name and the subject she taught at Hogwarts.
Yet we know she existed during the time of Harry Potter,
her tower home the last place the great Albus Dumbledore was alive
and for that her story deserves to be told.

37. Animagus

An animagus…

A wizard or witch with the ability to turn into an animal at will.
It certainly sounded like an exciting prospect even with all the hard work it entailed and the 16-year old Aurora was intrigued. She already practically turned into a nocturnal creature when her eyes were planted firmly at the base of her telescope to study the stars she loved so much. What if she could actually BECOME one?

Sure would beat riding a broom to get up high in the night sky if it was a flying creature…an owl per say.

Ah…a girl can dream.

51. Act

“Now Aurora, you must remember to behave like a proper witch.”

“Yes, Grandmother,” the Slytherin third year doing her best to act attentive to the matriarch.

“You have your trunk all properly packed with everything you need?”

“Yes, Mother.” How many times had she said it was so?

“And a Sinistra is always attentive of who they deal with.”

“Yes, Grandmother.” When was she going to be allowed to leave them? At this rate she was going to be here long after the train left the station.

And then where would she need to act like a proper pureblood witch?

27. Owl

The first few times Aurora had though the creature had arrived with notes or packages for her. However with nothing in its claws or tied to its legs it was clearly not the case. Yet the bird still came every few days and perched up in the eves of the astronomy tower like it was comfy and home.

And each and every time she’d shoo it out until its next appearance there.

“Out….get OUT of my tower!"

If that crazy bird left her any surprises on her maps and equipment…heads would roll.

Did this place really look like the owlery?

1. Herbology

The hard work was fine. She wasn’t a stuck up prissy girl like Narcissa Black.

She didn’t even mind working with dirt, even if it did manage to get everywhere sometimes.

No…the thing Aurora Sinistra hated most about Herbology class was the whole thought of using animal dung. Sure they used it with gloves but that only worked with one nasty aspect. It even made the rather…interesting ingredients Professor Slughorn made them use in potions seem like a walk in the park.

“Miss Sinistra, I might suggest you get a move on.” Professor Finnegan remarked, having obviously noticed her pause.

63. Mooch

Aurora wasn’t one to misbehave much, but she had one downfall…she had a sweet tooth.

She wasn’t picky but she did have a particular fondness for a cookie her mother only liked to serve at parties. Having slipped away from her guardian’s watchful eye during the course of the evening, the young girl had managed to sneak into the kitchens before dinner. It wasn’t too hard to find the plates of desserts already done up in preparation.

Just one or two wasn’t going to hurt her.

No one would even notice the missing cookies if she rearranged things well enough.

45. Licorice Wand

It was Aurora’s turn to oversee study hall, a prospect bringing on mixed feelings. Either she’d be ignored, or she would learn to handle the students in a more relaxed setting.

“Ms. Peters!”

“Yes, Professor?” the Hufflepuff girl replied turning her way, those around her trying to hide snickers.

“Wands are not meant to be waved around foolishly, lest something unexpected happen…” the loudest of the bunch winding up with one up his nose curled like ring.

“Even ones of the licorice variety,” she added walking away with wand lowered. The boys friends no longer able to hide their laughter.

5. Astronomy

“Come on…it’ll be fun.”

Fun…waiting for an author to sign his book…was fun?

Vector and Pomona seemed to be bubbling all about this…Gilderoy Lockhart, but she was busy charting an upcoming meteor shower. Correction…HAD been busy. Until her two friends had decided they wanted her to tag along.

“It’ll be crowded. And noisy.”

“That’s part of the allure. That and seeing HIM in person.”

“Really Vector…you’re acting like he’s some famous muggle movie star.”

“He’s a famous wizard with all sorts of adventures, isn’t that similar?”

“Give it up,” Pomona remarked, “Aurora only pays attention to one type of star.”

94. Allergic

“Achoo!”

“Bless you,” Pomona spoke first, being polite towards her friend.

“A…achoo!”

“Gesundheit,“ the new German DADA professor added from her corner of the room where she was seated reading the Prophet.

“A...aa…acHOO!”

“Bless you. Aurora are ye alright?” the matronly McGonagall piped up clearly concerned as she looked up from her marking.

So much for a nice break in the staff lounge, her tea pushed aside as Aurora took out her handkerchief to blow her nose.

“You sure you’re not catching a cold?” Poppy questioned, the nurse finally adding her two cents after joining the group of women.

18. Whomping Willow

Aurora was in need of a break.

Two months into the term and classes were well into full swing, leaving the students in them well into wishing Christmas break would hurry up and get here. Wandering on the grounds seemed to be helping her clear her head though. So much that she nearly ran into a tree that appeared to have popped out of nowhere.

Had it always been there?

The third year didn’t have much time to dwell however when suddenly a branch swung towards her with more force than merely wind, causing her to jump back.

“Woah…bloody tree.”

54. Dare

“Half a cup of sugar…two eggs…cup of milk“

Was that right? She thought looking at the house elves bustling around the kitchens doing their own cooking. Aurora sure hoped so otherwise she was sure to lose. The Slytherin added the ingredients into a bowl and proceeded to stir them together, adding a few other things to the mixture before spooning them onto a tray and putting them in the oven.

She bit her lip as she awaited the results nervously. Once the cookies were done, Aurora tested one with a bite and found it quite palatable.

Lorelei….eat your heart out.

50. Boggart

One more class this evening and she was finished for the week, getting to recover her sense of rhythm in return. Walking over to her cupboard, she opened the door needing to get out a few instruments for her lesson only to be greeted with something she wasn’t expecting.

Aurora yelled in surprise, her wand raised without too much of a thought ready to banish it back to its dark home.

“Riddikulus!”

It didn’t work…it just stayed the same shape unaffected by her spell work. However on a second glance it wasn’t what she thought it was. Which meant…

“PEEVES!”

98. Pajamas

“Papa…Papa!”

The sound of bare feet could be heard across the floors of the old house as a young Aurora padded towards her father in his study , the girl aroused from her sleep.

“What is it Aurora?” Anton Sinistra questioned as he took hold of the pajama-clad little girl.

“Bad dream…It was scary!”

Aurora woke up, wiping her eyes of sleep and tears. Her thoughts of her father after his death obviously playing on her subconscious. Throwing a robe over her sleep clothes, she slipped barefoot down to the common room.

There would be no more sleep this evening.

22. Kneazle

Aurora nearly jumped as she came around the corner and came face to cat, or rather toes to cat.

Mrs. Norris had appeared out of nowhere.

Easy there, Sinistra…it’s just a ruddy animal, she mused to herself as she moved past to continue her walk down the corridor. Familiar of Filch…maybe that what made the cat seem creepy.

The next day the astronomy professor was traveling down the same way as it was easiest. There same as yesterday and roughly the same time, Mrs. Norris was sitting…almost starring at her.

Weird.

The cat was certainly smarter than the average feline.

78. Author's Choice-Distraction

Aurora still wasn’t sure what had really possessed her to try-out.

Maybe it was what had happened last winter…and the prodding of others. However the captain hadn’t armed her with a quaffle and aimed her at the hoops like expected. She spent the entire time chasing the smallest prize.

The golden snitch.

Aurora flew fast and kept her eye out for the tiny golden ball. However when she finally spotted it, she was caught up by how sparkly and similar to a star it looked when pausing and reflecting sunlight.

And missed it as another player snatched it flying by.

34. Parseltongue

Not everyone knew about the skill of talking to snakes.

But Aurora was familiar. It was something passed down about the Slytherin founder by history books. Though it was rare and the woman never thought she would ever meet one of those blessed, or perhaps cursed with the ability.

However like a few other staff, Aurora had showed up at the dueling club meeting out of curiosity, never expecting her interest would be satisfied. A shiver running through her as Potter spoke to the snake that had erupted from Master Malfoy’s wand.

A parseltongue…at Hogwarts?

What things did this portend?

12. Charms

It was that time of year again and the professors had enlisted students to help decorate the Great Hall. Aurora couldn’t figure out how she had gotten roped into it, but there she was in charge of one corner of the room. Now all she needed was a few things to work with and what she hadn’t wasn’t very nice in her opinion.

“Engorgio…” she cast, aiming the spell at the bright orange gourd nearest her. However this time it worked a little too well…the pumpkin quickly becoming far larger than intended almost ready to burst. Uh oh.

Juice anyone?

70. Spook

Living in an area where Muggles resided had its interesting aspects. One season Aurora had the perchance to spend an October weekend in a quiet northern village to study an upcoming eclipse. Too busy to take notice of the date, Halloween snuck up on her and the local children were soon about. One little one ventured to her rented door.

“Boo!” the sheeted girl exclaimed when she looked out to see. Aurora fought laughter and feigned fright instead as she handed her a treat.

“Peeves has nothing on you,” she mused, leaving a confused child as she closed the door.

4. Ancient Runes

Rune of ice.

“Which rune was that?” Aurora sighed at her own question, trying to look over her assignment. She switched over to the textbook lying open beside her on the table and flipped through the pages to try and find the one she wanted. It took a few tries but finally all was revealed to her.

Isa….rune of ice.

Looking further down upon the page, the Slytherin came upon the given meaning. A challenge or frustration.

“How appropriate.” Because that was what this homework and the subject as a whole certainly was. A challenge.

Maybe she should switch electives.

88. Sweet Tooth

Aurora wasn’t that into sweets, not even the house elves’ known-to-be delicious cookies. However there was one thing that got past her near-lack of a sweet tooth. And Florean Fortescues’s was one stop that had to be made when the woman spent a day in Diagon Alley to satisfy it.

One scoop of treacle fudge to be exact.

Just enough to curb any craving as she sat at an outside table and watched the wizarding world go by. Students and parents both mingling around the busy street. Ah…if only there was more than four weeks to the start of school.

76. Zap

Flash…boom.

So much for a night of stargazing. The spring storm had come up rather suddenly changing her plans for the evening and Aurora was left watching the resulting scene from the high window of her quarters. She had brewed some tea and was sitting within the window well staring out into the darkened sky as it was broken up by zigzags of light.

All of a sudden the professor heard a crash from above and after setting down her mug, moved to investigate. A forgotten student telescope was smoldering…proof of a lightning strike.

Her tower WAS the highest point.

8. Potions

The letter had told of a turn for the worst.

Aurora answered with her return to the family home, her mother resting in bed. The younger woman made her way upstairs, the faint shadows on the walls bringing silent tales of the memories in the house until banished by the squeak of the door as she entered the convalescing room.

“Mother…” she called out making her presence knowing to the ailing woman half-asleep. Numerous vials and bottles upon the nightstand proof of the circumstances that kept the inhabitant cooped up, their contents only just barely keeping her alive.

“Oh mother.”

96. Socks

It was the grand idea of one Albus Dumbledore to have the staff exchange presents in a secret santa sort of way. And like most if not all of his ideas…it was mandatory for all.

This year she had the luck, or rather punishment in her eyes, to pick his name out of the Sorting Hat. And Aurora had absolutely no idea what to get him. That was until she spotted them in on a snowy visit into Diagon Alley.

"Socks…how wonderful! However did you know, Aurora?"

"Oh, just a lucky guess, Headmaster." He would happen to have that quirk.

48. Leprechaun

The dark mark blared green across the front page of the Prophet…the story of the happenings at the World Cup the most talked about news.

Aurora couldn’t help but feel a bad taste in her mouth as she sat reading the tale. After a few minutes of staring at the picture almost hypnotized, she turned the page aside with disgust revealing the original pictures of the cover…the introductions of the Bulgaria and Ireland teams on the pitch.

The Leprechauns dancing upon the page a far more pleasant image to enjoy in the night sky.

Such an awful turn of events.

100. Homework

"Good answer, Miss Browning. That’s exactly what I mean." Aurora had to admit, the class had gone smoother than she expected. The candles re-lit with a wand wave signaling the end of class.

“Now for homework, I want two sides on the proper care and use of the telescope.”

Now that remark got a series of groans before they could he quelled as the mood in the classroom changed. “No complaining…it won’t be that hard.” Really they just had to continue one with that she started. She just wanted to know that she could trust them with their prized instruments.

20. Hogsmeade

Aurora headed out to the courtyard after breakfast, her outer robes snug up tight against the brisk fall weather. It wasn’t going to deter her from having fun today. A day free from studying and the contents of the school grounds.

“Ah…Miss Sinistra,” the professor greeted her as she joined the group of gathered students already there. “Do you have your permission slip with you?”

“Right here, Professor,” she replied handing the parchment over to the man. The Slytherin third-year heading out past the gates with a couple of housemates once she was free to go.

Hogsmeade, here we come.

92. Chocolate

Bloody hell.

Who gave Lockhart permission to decorate the Great Hall? It could only be him given it was rather obviously a departure from the usual décor of previous years. Not even Dumbledore was that overwhelming in his cheerful design choices.

Debating disappearing for a saner atmosphere, perhaps claim fatigue, Aurora found herself pressured to head towards her seat like normal. It was there that she noticed a box of candies at her plate, no doubt left as a valentine. After fighting the urge to roll her eyes, the astronomy professor discretely vanished them.

Laced with love potion of course.
