"You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago - the precise date is uncertain - by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. They built this castle together, far from prying Muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and witches and wizards suffered much persecution."

C O M P L E T E !

With these drabbles I will try to create a story of the Founders from the beginning when Hogwarts was just a dream the four shared, to Salazar Slytherin's departure from the school, and their eventual passings. Some of the drabbles will be connected directly like a dialogue, while others will be connected in a different way. I hope you all enjoy reading these as much as I enjoy writing them!

Gazing out the window with his wild red hair blowing in his face, Godric Gryffindor knew that the world was in need of change. Innocent blood spilled by anxious hands, surely there something they could do to protect wizardingkind.

It was for this very reason that he had owled the three people he trusted most. They needed to put their dream into action, now.

Three loud popping noises one after the other, and now there were four people in the tower, each with the same look of horror on their faces.

“My friends, now is the time. We must unite.”

●○53. Chase○●

Helga was pleased that things had seemingly gone back to normal and that Rowena was genuinely smiling again. Godric had advised her to stop snooping on Salazar, but she just couldn’t , which is why she found herself in his office. She felt like she had been here before and during that time she had learned something important.

“If you chase perfection, you often catch excellence,” Salazar said in a cryptic voice.

“That may be true,” Helga nodded. “But we question your methods, Salazar.”

“I let you have your way. It would be best if you let me have mine.”

●○63. Mooch○●

Needing something to distract her from grading her end of the year exams, Helga returned to her third home in the kitchens. Her first home was Wales and her second home was the Hufflepuff common room, but she really did enjoy spending time in the kitchens coming up with new menus to prepare for Hogwarts’ students.

She walked over to the refrigerator and opened it up looking for some the fresh roast she had special ordered…only it was nowhere to be found.

“Is that…hissing?” she asked leaning her ear against the wall. Her ears must be playing tricks on her.

Of course! Why hadn’t he thought of it earlier.

Salazar pulled a book off of his shelf and flipped through the pages. “All this time, right under my nose,” he said slamming the book shut. “I should have turned to you sooner Herpo.”

Salazar put the book down on his desk and folded his boney fingers together. Splitting his soul now was too risky considering the others were already suspicious of him.

Taking out a quill and parchment, Salazar began writing down instructions to be published into a book so that his heir might one day finish his honorable work.

●○81. Depression○●

Rowena looked down at herself while looking in the mirror. There was no way that she could keep the obvious bump in her stomach hidden much longer no matter how loose she made her robes.

Tonight marked the end of what had been a successful term. All students had received passing grades, her Ravenclaw students were the top of their classes, and no one died! It was a time to celebrate, but she could hardly muster any hint of a smile.

Rowena bent over holding her stomach and she stood frozen in terror.

“Help!” she cried reaching for the door.

●○93. Chicken○●

It had been Helga who had found Rowena hunched over her bed gripping her stomach in pain. Thankfully, the school’s Healer had been nearby and was able to handle the situation. Now, she sat beside Salazar and Godric in the hallway where the air was so tense that you could cut it with a knife.

“You are going to leave her and the child alone or I swear on Merlin’s beard I will snap your bones in half as easily as I can chicken bones,” Godric growled. Helga held his arm.

“That,” Salazar smirked. “Is not for you to decide.”

●○5. Astronomy○●

“You don’t always have to play the hero you know,” Rowena smiled bouncing her baby daughter on her knee. “Even Hercules took a break from his 12 labors.”

“Hercules didn’t earn his place in the stars for his breaks,” Godric smiled gently looking down at her. Thank Merlin for her receiving not only her mother’s brains, but her looks as well. “Rowena…” he stopped himself before he could ask her if she remembered anything.

“I’ve named her Helena,” Rowena smiled. “She is my little precious gift from the heavens.”

Rowena smiled at Godric and held out her hand for him.

●○20. Hogsmeade○●

Salazar rubbed his temple in agitation. Why wouldn’t the point get across to this man that he was not interested in helping him build some silly wizarding village. He did take pity him since he faced persecution from those filthy muggles, but it didn’t mean he had to help him accomplish the task.

“I told you, we are not interested in a village near the school. It will only make handling the students more difficult,” he sighed.

“If you help me, I promise you can have all the butterbeer you can drink!”

“Fine.”

Salazar was rather fond of the drink.

●○33. Classroom○●

The years continued to fly by and soon Rowena’s daughter was old enough to attend Hogwarts. Rowena tried to be fair and treat the other children the same, but it was hard whenever she walked into a classroom and saw her pride and joy sitting in the front row. She had to ask Helga to grade Helena’s papers because she was often too easy on her daughter.

“Class dismissed,” she smiled erasing the blackboard with the flick of her wand.

“Mother…”

“Professor Ravenclaw,” she corrected gently.

“Right,” Helena laughed. “About my birthday party…”

Rowena smiled. “Tonight in the common room.”

●○49. Yule Ball○●

“Whose ruddy idea was this?” Salazar snapped leaning against the wall.

“It was mine as a matter of fact,” Helga chirped winking at Rowena. “That’s a lovely diadem you are wearing.”

“Thank you,” Rowena smiled. “My daughter begged me to let her borrow it for the ball, but she is still too young for such things.”

“It suits you well,” Godric said slipping in between her and Salazar and taking her hand. “May I have this dance?”

“Certainly,” she curtseyed taking his hand.

Salazar glared at the two as they walked off. “Good riddance! I hate dancing anyway,” he mumbled.

●○52. Bore○●

If it weren’t for Helga sitting right next to him with her arm on his, Salazar would have hexed Godric into the next century as he danced around the dance floor with Rowena. His eyes darted to the lovely Helena who was dancing with a young baron who clearly fancied her. He better not put his hands any lower on her waist unless he wanted to be hexed as well.

“Salazar, dance with me! Be a normal wizard,” Helga offered rising from her seat and talking hold of both his hands.

“So-called normal behavior patterns make me bored,” he grumbled.

●○67. Quell○●

Godric would usually have been upset that he had been left to try and quell all the hormones of Hogwarts students, especially after such a lively dance party, but he was feeling exceptionally fatherly thing evening and it probably would have been more efficient if the students were doing the calming.

In a few days, it was the final task of the tournament and was due to be the most dangerous as Salazar had planned it. A frown suddenly appeared on his face when he saw the Hogwarts champion and a feeling of dread devoured him. He was a muggleborn.

●○91. Future○●

Helga stood in front of the mouth to a great cave, where the third task would take place, with her hand placed gentle on the shoulder of her house, no, her school’s Champion.

“Professor,” the boy said looking up at her. “I don’t think I can do this. I’m just a muggleborn. Someone from Slytherin house is better suited for such honor.”

“All this talk of blood purity will someday be a matter of the past,” she smiled holding his cheek. “And taking that first step towards that future is you.”

A canon sounded

“Go show them how it’s done.”

●○17. Cauldron○●

A terrifying hissing noise came from the cave and a malicious grin threatened to give himself away. The look went unnoticed by the on looking students, but that was not the case for the other Founders.

“What did you do?” Helga demanded. “There better not be anything too dangerous in there. They are just children for Merlin’s sake!”

“Nothing that a pure wizard would be worried about,” he cackled.

“Oh, why don’t you go drown yourself in your own cauldron,” Godric growled.

“Some’ne! Pleaze ‘elp!” shrieked the Beauxbaton’s Champion as she came running out of the cave. “’ez been killed!”

●○22. Kneazle○●

“You bloody murderer!” Helga spat as she clawed at Salazar looking fiercer than a kneazle being forced into a pool of ice water. “How DARE you do such a thing to an innocent child!”

Godric wrapped his arms around Helga’s waist to keep her back – although he wanted to hex the man, perhaps even shot a certain green spell right at his chest.

“The boy got what he deserved,” Salazar replied calmly looking out the window and down at the candlelight service being held for the fallen Champion.

Helga felt ready to commit murder herself.

“Helga, leave us,” Godric ordered.

●○56. Fight○●

The moment Helga had shut the door behind her, the hexes began flying. Flashes of green, red, blue, and brilliant violet could be seen from where the students stood outside. However, to them it looked like nothing more than a fireworks display.

“You have gone too far,” Godric shouted throwing another hex at Salazar.

“I am only doing what is right for wizarding kind,” he hissed back.

“You’re a fool!”

“The only fool is someone who trusts you! You took everything from me Godric! Everything!”

Godric’s next spell hit Salazar in the face and knocked him backwards.

“LEAVE!” Godric bellowed.

●○55. Egg on○●

Salazar could do nothing as he watched Godric snap his wand in two and throw the pieces at him as he remained stunned on the floor. How he wished to egg the lion on. Make him do something to ruin that sparkly little reputation of his. Make Godric have everything taken away from him as it had been for him. First his mother to muggles, now his vision as well.

When he was able to move again, he returned to his pet. “You must stay here,” he cooed. “But, someday, my heir shall return. Then you may finish your job.”

●○90. Present○●

Days passed and whispers began echoing through the halls about Salazar’s sudden disappearance. Godric took his absence the hardest. Salazar had been his best friend and they had been there for each other when times seemed their darkest.

Now…all that was lost.

Now, the man he had once admired had shed his skin and showed that he was nothing but a monster.

He had asked the other Champions what they had seen in the cave and gone to confirm it himself. Yes, Salazar and breed a basilisk.

“What do we do now?” Rowena whispered.

“We take care of the now.”

●○23. Telescope○●

Rowena had been looking dreadful for days, but she always avoided answering the question when anyone asked her, so Godric had given up trying.

The two sat in silence at the dinner table since Helga, with good reason, refused to leave her Hufflepuff students. Godric folded his hands together and leaned his chin on them.

“I’ve failed,” he said suddenly. “I was living in a fantasy and didn’t see what was happening.”

“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living,” she said softly. ”It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. We must look forward.”

Salazar hadn’t been able to bring himself to lose sight of the castle that he and his friends had dreamed of building for years. Nor could he forget the several decades they had spent together as friends and so much more. He laughed to himself.

Friends.

A friend is someone with whom you dare to be yourself, or so he had been told. He had done just that, and look where it had gotten him.

Flinging his bag over his shoulder, he vanished into the forest with only one thought on his mind: revenge on muggles and the wizarding world.

Exams were done and it would soon be time for all the students to pack their things. Helga walked through the unusually silent Hufflepuff common room and stop by the portrait of the young boy who had his life taken all too soon.

“Professor,” a young girl asked in a trembling voice. “Is it true? What the others are saying about what happened?”

“I’m afraid so.”

The girl whimpered. “I fear I will never be cheerful again.”

Helga smiled and handed the girl a piece of chocolate. “Do not let this be your own personal dementor. We still have tomorrow.”

Rowena lay in her bed too frail to even lift one of her delicate fingers in greeting as her two sat beside her bed. She smiled weakly at Godric and then offered Helga a gentle gaze.

“Helena…she…she stole my diadem…and ran away,” she panted.

“Rowena, save your strength,” Godric begged stroking her hair.

“I-I sent that boy after her…but…they haven’t returned…”

She closed her eyes for a moment and swore she felt her daughter’s presence. When she opened them, a specter of her daughter stood in the doorway to the room and Rowena’s heart finally broke.

“Rowena? No…you can’t go…ROWENA!”

●○60. Joke○●

Helga held Godric’s had as they watched the marble casket be lowered into the Black Lake. Godric knew that Rowena would have liked that. To remain close to the school that she had put half her life into creating.

Now completely submerged into the ghostly waters, Godric vowed to never leave her side.

“Helga, I think it is time for me to go,” he said with his eyes remaining on the lake.

“You’re joking,” she squeaked.

“I am not,” he smield. “I’ll still be around, just not in this form.”

Helga reached for his hand and held it.

“I understand.”

●○25. Sorting Hat○●

After making his way back to his office, Godric found his favorite old hat. It had actually been a gift from Salazar many years ago…but that seemed forever ago. Tapping his wand on it four times, one for each of them, he uttered words inaudible to the human ear. It was the deepest sort of magic; the sort that can only come from a selfless heart.

Suddenly the hat sprang to life and began to sing. “I’m the Hogwarts Sorting Hat, and I cap them all!”

Smiling, Godric picked up the hat and a single tear trickled down his face.

Her bags packed, Helga walked through the corridors of the castle smiling at each child she passed. It took all her strength to not crumble to pieces with each look. She leaned her hand on the wall and felt the decades she had spent here come flooding back like a ghostly journey to the past.

“Professor Hufflepuff?”

“What is it my dear?

“Even after what happened this term, I want to thank you.”

“For what?”

“For giving people like us a safe haven.”

Helga hugged the student and allowed herself to cry.

We did it. Godric, Rowena, Salazar

●○11. History of Magic○●

{ new beginnings } mini challenge

Godric walked up the spiral staircase and knocked on the Headmaster’s door.

“Godric, won’t you please reconsider?”

“I am sorry, Headmaster,” Godric smiled handing him the Sorting Hat. “I know the school will be in capable hands.” His fiery eyes looked out to the Black Lake which he would soon be calling his new home. Godric Gryffindor, the man, may have left the school grounds, but he would still come to the surface every once and again.

“It’s not our history anymore,” he grinned turning his gaze away now. “It is your turn to create a new history of magic.”

author's note: We now find ourselves at the end of the Four Founder's drabbles. And what a journey it was! I have had several people ask me to turn this into a fan fiction, which I think I will do once I move a little further along with my other fics.

So, until then...
