So he obliged, surprised to hear her agreeing with him and apologizing and.... laughing?! "Don't," he muttered softly, "don't be sorry." She hadn't done anything wrong, really, they just hadn't worked out is all.
The surprises continued when his now-ex gave him a peck on the cheek and walked away. He didn't look after her, no, he just numbly touched his cheek where she had kissed him. Eventually, William put the spare chair back and then calmly walked back around to his desk and sat down.
Well...... that was done. Um. What had he been working on earlier today?
January had seen the whole thing. She had first taken notice of the uncomfortable distance between the couple when they had first arrived. Then she had noticed that the conversation was taking a slightly dismal turn, so January refrained from talking to them, and shoved her nose back into her paperwork. However, she couldn't help but overhear... nearly everything. They weren't exactly in a private setting, you know.
Ocassionally, January had glanced up just to make sure she wasn't hearing things. It was over..? William and Alysson weren't happy with each other and it was over. Just like that. Maybe that was why Willy never talked about them much. He just hadn't been happy. Oh, she should have known! She should have been more helpful, too, instead of waving in his face the fact that her relationship with Vic was NEARLY perfect.
She felt horrible.
As soon as Alysson was gone and William was back at his desk, January set down her pen and stood up. "William," she said quietly, stepping towards him with her hand outstretched... should she hold his hand? Maybe he didn't want to be around women at the moment. But she wanted to ask how he was. If he was okay? But obviously he wasn't. So January settled for: "What do you need?" Because she was his best friend and she would do anything for him.

He'd started shuffling some papers for something to do, but truth be told there weren't many papers on his desk. They hardly even made any noise at all, so that was a terrible distraction. And now January was here.
Oh. January. She must have..... well crap. William looked up at her with a wrinkled brow. What did he need? Did he look troubled? And in need of something? There was a pause while he looked at his friend and thought of something to request, but then he came up with: "A glass of water would be nice. I'm parched."

.... A glass of water? Perhaps he meant to say whiskey. No, this was Willy. He was probably hiding his pain and discomfort behind his sense of humor. January sighed inwardly and watched him carefully for a moment. Ending relationships was a hard thing to do, even if it was for the better.
"Please tell me the truth." Maybe he WAS parched, but he knew what she meant. Maybe he was just too Slytherin stubborn for his own good. "If you had plans for tonight, cancel them. I'm coming over with a large pizza and a bottle of wine. Or two. And we're going to have fun." Even if she wasn't his best friend (he had Oliver and that other guy, after all), HE was hers. And she was going to take care of him.

...okay, truth be told, he didn't NEED a glass of water. He could use his legs and get it himself. In fact, a walk sounded good right now. So did pizza with January. That sounded REALLY good.
"Okay," he agreed humbly, "my plans are canceled." Not that he'd had any, but.... "Uh, can we get extra cheese on the pizza please?" He gave her a tiny little smile, because Jan Jan was a good friend. A great friend. Even if he didn't think he needed company tonight, it was nice that she had persisted with her friendship.

Ember was just...here...another day at the ole' GRIND. Not that she minded. She loved work. And everyone HERE on THIS level so of course she was humming SOOO very cheerfully. HEHE. She went riiiight to her work area and plopped down in her chair, eyeing some paperwork she had to do.
Well then.
Paperwork wasn't much fun. Ember had started a crossword puzzle yesterday--aaallllmost done--she would come up with the PERFECT system. Do some paperwork...then figure out word. Do some MORE paperwork---FIGURE OUT ANOTHER WORD. YEAH. Good enough system for heeerrr! HEHEHE. She leaned back in her chair and rocked it a bit, determining whether to SWIVEL around a lot for the lulz before getting to work--well--meh.
WHEEEEEEE okay she HAD to--she was swiveling---oh no SHE WAS GOING TOO FAST-----

Manolo walked in to the MC work area, all kind of chippy. Like usual. He held a box of freshly baked cookies (thanks to his sister) behind his back and scanned the room for--*GASP* EMBER!
All he saw was a blur of teal circling and circling in her chair. He waited for the perfect moment and shot his arm in to stop the ever-spinning chair, holding out another arm in case she shot out of the seat. You know, because of physics and stuff. Although, he wasn't quite sure if those laws really applied in the wizard world, but just in case. Just in case.

Ember was having fun. SPINNING SPINNING, ALL DAY LONG. SPINNING SPINNNING AAALLLD DAY LONG. WHEE whooooooo! WAS Ember Rachel Rosemary Brighten TWENTY THREEEE? Yes. But her spirit age was five! So this wasn't TOO odd of a thing for her to be DOING right now, no?
And then, suddenly, she came to a HALT. Ember looked up at her spin-stopper, and she BEAMED at Manolo. "MANNY!" she cried, and she stood up, flung her arms around him, and hugged him. Quickly. And then sat back down. "Hi, Manolo." She was super chuckly and eyed the box in his hands. "Hey--what is that?!" she asked, looking back up at his face. "Hey! Manolo--" she squinted up at him.
What was his spirit age right now? She was having a hard time reading him-"You...you are feeling bittersweet--or something similar--your energy is all fuzzy-" she wasn't sure what was up right now. "I can't even sense your soul right now." Merlin. This kind of worried her. She put her hand on his chest quickly and closed her eyes.
GAH.

WHOOP! The 24 year-old almost toppled over at Ember jumped into his arms. He admired her energy. Her hyper. It reminded him of Awar when his sister was perfectly comfortable. A quick warming hug and he let her go as she made her way back into her seat. "Hello to you, Ember Brighten." Flashing a smile, he rattled the box in her face. "These are cookies. Courtesy of my sister. She says hello."
What's with the squinted eyes??? He squinted back, only to open them wide again when she started to ask about his soul...
Since when did she read souls??? Was this a crucial thing he missed about her?? Such a bad friend, Manolo, much bad. She was rather right, however. Bittersweet is how he felt. Very bitter, very sweet, indeed.

EMBER BRIGHTEN HAD COOOOOKIES?!?!? Ember was so HAAAAPPPY she almost cried. Instead of CRYING though she whipped out her wand and TAPPED Manolo's CUTE head, making it rain pretty white CONFETTI on his head. "I'll SHARE though OKAY?" She would. Cookies were only as fun as the amount of people you were SHARING WITH RIGHT???
But,
He hadn't answered. As Ember opened the little plate, she glanced upward once more. "You..okay? Your sister sent the cookies? Why?!" she wondered what she had to DESERVE such a kindness! Really! "And WHAT in Merlin's name is WRONG?" she asked. She wanted to know. And she wanted to HELP.
HUFF.

CONFETTI!!!!! He'd prance in it if he could. Now's now the place and time though. He placed his bum on the edge of her desk, all comfy. "I was hoping you would or I'd have to steal one!" That wasn't a joke. He totally would. In the name of food.
He nodded casually, "Yeah I'm fine. Are you okay? My sister just felt like baking." He picked up a quill and fiddled with. "She's going to be a chef, you know." Manolo's eyed once again widened at her question and the raised tone. "Nothing's wrong." Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle.

Ember held up the plate as she picked one up...THEY LOOKED SO YUMMY. UGH. She took a biiiiiiig bite and MERLIN THESE WERE THE BEST COOKIES SHE HAD EVER HAD.
GAH.
She wiiiiidened her eyes. "MANDOLO! 'DESH THA' BESHT COOKIES EVAIR!" she said thickly...with a mouth FULL of cookie...yeah...oops. Maybe she was getting crumbs all over her lap...and desk..and...on her shoes. And floor. She'd clean it up, though, NO WORRIES.
Nothing was WRONG? He was FIDDLING. Ember squinted more. "Right...because I'm SOO dumb Manolo--" but she just snorted and devoured the rest of her cookie..but Ember was sure she'd get it out of him eventually.
SHE WOULD.

hehehe. "Mandolo". That's new one. Hehehe. He crookedly smiled, flicking something a crumble off the front of his shoe. "I'll let her know you said so." Spotting a big piece of cookie stowing away on the corner of her mouth, he chuckled and took a piece of tissue to it. "She'll be thrilled."
He frowned a bit, "I'm not calling you dumb, Emberly Stadium." Waving his wand over the crumbles of goods on the ground to clean it up, he mumbled, "This is my last year here." Well, there it is. Sort of. He still had to explain why and when and how and what. Who? Himself, of course.

Ember nodded. "Please do--" and she swallowed. She should probably swallow before...you...know...replying to someone. Ahem. "I don't think I've met your sister--bet she's brilliant--like YOU--" she grinned and swiveled in her chair a bit for the funsies.
SIIIIGH.
Sometimes Ember has such a want to be a child again--to PLAY and to dance silly without judgment--but of course, being an adult had certain perks. Work was one--being able to fulfill dreams--to HELP people..and REALLY help people and not just offering kindness or something--it was GREAT.
EMBERLY STADIUM. Ember didn't get the reference at AALLLL but she giggled nonetheless and LIKED it. "Oh--silly Ma-----"
WAHT.
EEEHAAT?
WAIT.
Ember's mouth fell open and she looked...close to tears...she was closer to tears..there was one tear...and now more--OH NO EMBER WAS CRYING. "WHY?" she asked, sounding the saddest of all sads ever right now..

"She just graduated from Beauxbatons Academy." He said, a bit proudly. Okay, maybe very proudly. Awar was practically all the family he had left. Practically, being the grandparents were still alive, but aloof.
He watched her spin and spin in her chair. Ember shared his feeling of not letting go of the kid inside of you. Who says you can't be a bit silly and still be responsible. Society. lol. Also, Emmy had something that kept reminding her of his sister. Maybe that's why he got so attached. She was Awar away from Awar. Another sister.
The former Ravenclaw's heart dropped when Ember's tears started pouring. Oh, nononononononononononono. HE DID NOT LIKE PEOPLE BEING SAD, NONONONONONONONONO. "No...Ember..d-don't cry." Manolo wibbled a bit. "St-stop." He was very sensitive, okay?!
Ember nodded. "OOH. Beauxbatons." She didn't know anything who went there. It seemed so...fanccceh. And nice. And pretty. ALL the girls from Beauxbatons seemed so pretty--and the boys seemed.....HANDSOME. Hmph. Ember didn't know a LICK of French though. Would Dmitry be teaching her that, too? She might ask. French was a bit more useful than Russian. Though Russian...Ember enjoyed hearing Mitya's Russian.
Ember just...felt so....well she felt like her best friend in her own department was leaving. Not that she didn't feel appreciated by her coworkers---SHE DID--she just...ugh. No one else besides Harmony UNDERSTOOD Ember. And she knew Manola was a nice guy--she wiped her eyes, though, when he beckoned her to stop, and sighed.
"Why are you leaving?" She asked softly. Had he found a better job? She wanted him to be happy. And content. And well off so he didn't have to WORRY about things. "As long as--it's what YOU want--I'll be okay-" she smiled through her puffy eyes and sighed.
This was...sad.

He scooted her chair closer to him, wiping at her tear streaks with a tissue. He honestly had a lot to thank her for. If she hadn't suggested he'd check out Ireland, he wouldn't have met some new friends, or the university he fell in love with. He wouldn't be making a change in his life, right now. "I'm going back to school, Ember." Manolo stated, smile forming in pride. "I'm going to expand this noggin of mine."

Ember didn't understand. He was't explaining. And now she was SAD. Who would she act like a KID with while doing boring PAPERWORK, HUH? Sniffling, she wiped her eyes on the back of her hand some more, and sighed.
Oh.
He was..he was going back to school? Her ears perked at this. "Oh...Manolo--that's really heartening to hear--" she said genuinely, standing to give him another hug, a really heart-felt one, too. "That's..that's so good! Good for you. You'll love it...learning is such a priceless experience." She said with a smile. "Knowledge is what makes us more compassionate humans..." she said thoughtfully, tilting her head a bit. Hmph. "What do you want to study? I'll miss you but--we can always hang out when you're not busy--RIGHT?"
Right???

Right???
Aww...this hug..this hug was making him feel...sad and touched all in one. It was like it finally hit him that he was going to leave behind all he knew...to learn more...
He gave her one more tight squeeze. A squeeze that said, 'I'll always be here with you' in a non-physically harming way. Manolo's lip quivered a bit. He hadn't really cried since the death of his father, yet here he was feeling the same amount of pain in a more bittersweet manner.
He smiled at her, "I'm going to learn more about Magical Creatures, then come back with all these new-found knowledge," he said making a dramatic show of his mind blowing, "and bring it back here." The handler patted his friend's head. "Of course we can." Apparation is a wonderful thing, dude.
Ember did her best not to be sad for him. Because new ADVENTURES. New beginnings. Those were happy times. Change did not equal scary, or sad. Just...different. And Ember was happy he had decided to go back to school and learn more. School was...a blessing, for everyone, and Ember could only hope he'd learn all that his heart desired.
"How..exciting. Bittersweet, but exciting." She said as she sat on her desk, not caring about manners right now. "When will you be leaving? I have to throw you a going away party, Manny!" she said with a BIG smile. "Which creatures do you want to study more? More Hounds?" she asked curiously, folding her arms across her chest.
SIGH.
She had to remind herself this wasn't the last time she'd see him or anything. "You'll do wonderfully, okay?" She rubbed his arm and smiled more. "I have so much faith in you, buddy." Manolo was a bright fellow! Everyone in her department was so smart! They could change the world, they really could, with all of their brain power.

Plopping down a latte on Jan's desk, William made his way over to his own work area with his own latte. He had a million and one ideas bouncing around his head about this pet adoption/bring your pet to work day event, and he wanted to get them all down on paper before he forgot any of them.
So. To work it was. He shrugged off his messenger bag and roamed around his messy desk for a quill and a roll of parchment.
"List of Adoptable Pets," he said aloud to himself as he started on his first idea. He read the list over once, then hmmmmm'd to himself as he thought about the flying creatures. Did they really want to bring owls into this mix? Owls were handy, sure, but the Post Office and Eeylops kind of had a monopoly on birds. Maybe they didn't want to fidget with them... and all their poop....
Looking up with list in hand, William tried to see if any of his coworkers were around. Besides Ember, preferably. He could really use a second opinion if he should add any more interesting dangerous creatures to the list.

There was nothing better than coming to work and having a cup of coffee already on your desk. January hadn't necessarily been in a bad mood, but her mood brightened as she walked into the office. She picked up the latte and took a sip. Ahhhh. Perfect and just the way she liked it. She knew exactly who had done it, too. January didn't really talk to anyone else in the department.
The redhead made her way over to her dear friend and peered over his shoulder to look at the list he was creating. She had been in her own "spirit" world, so she had no idea what he was doing, but... adopting pets sounded fun? "Don't forget Manticores," she teased. Add some spice to life, for sure. January turned and leaned against Willy's desk. "Thank you for the coffee. At least, I assume you're my secret admirer." Jan raised her latte before taking another drink. She had the bestest best friend.
"What's this for, anyway?" she asked, gesturing towards his list. Where they starting an adoption program?

"Manticores," William clucked to himself, looking up from the list with a grin just for his friend. "I'll add them juuuuust for you, JanJan." He pretended to scribble it down, though his quill had just run out of ink, and then he dropped his quill.
So. She'd found the coffee; good. "You're welcome." A small blush formed at the top of Willy's cheeks and tips of his ears. What could he say, he wasn't very good at admiring January from afar. Even though she was most definitely taken... "Not so secret," he mumbled to himself.
"The list!" Ah, a much better topic! He quickly swiped the list off his desk with a flourish and held it just out of reach of January. "It's a pet project of mine, you could say." HA, pun intended. Did she see that? HAH HAH. "Do you really wanna know?" William's long arm dangled down toward the bottom of his chair with list in hand. January would practically have to climb over him to get to it. "Once you know, you can't UN-know, you know? Once you're in, you're IN." Was he teasing her enough?

Jan grinned a grin that only certain people could squeeze out of her. Manticores were cool, alright? "Good." She would probably own a manticore if she could get close enough to shrink one and put it in a mini sanctuary in her house. Freak people out with it. That'd be cool. She wondered what Lucie would think of THAT in her precious little condo.
Slurping on her latte, January just happened to miss the mumbling from William. And then the list was gone. A pet project? Jan narrowed his eyes at him as he took the list and TEASED her with it, holding it far away from her. "You're making it sound like I'm joining the cult," she stated, setting her cup down on his desk.
"Just give me the list," she said, attempting to reach around him to grab it. She wanted to SEE before she agreed to sell her soul to one of Willy's "projects".

"Good." William agreed, giving January a second look. "I didn't know you were into some of the more dangerous items this department deals with." Had something changed? How were ghosties doing?
But back to his list. Hehe. "It's not a cult, it's just a PET project," he repeated. Didn't she see the emphasis he was putting on the word PET? Hehehehe. To block her grabby hands, he tilted his chair so he was leaning all the way back. "Not so fast. I really do want your help, I mean, you might get dragged into this one way or the other." So better to just agree, right?
Willy gave her a cheeky grin and extended his arm straight up in the air with the list in hand. "Pet project, January. We're going to host a Bring Your Pet to Work Day!"

"Oh, didn't you know? I'm the new supervisor for the Adventuring to Find and Potentially Get Killed my XXXXXX Rated Creatures Division." Really, she was.
Not. She was not. January was a Ravenclaw, not a Gryffindor. She sipped her latte again. It was funny how she ended up in this department. All her life most creatures hadn't really appealed to her or struck her interest, but spirits did. She was the Spirit lady in the crowded world of creatures people. Ah well. She was unique.
Yes, PET project; she got that part, but what did it MEAN? January was leaning over him. LOOMING over him. She wanted to know what he was dragging getting her into. Pet project, yes... Oh. "Bring your pet to work day?" January repeated. She leaned back onto her heels again and thought about it. "I assume this is the list of animals that we are allowing, yes?" She snatched it from his hand finally to get a good look at it. You never knew with some people. They could have some weird foreign creature caged up in their basements.
