Ch. 6 - Going Up...or Down?
Weeks had gone by since Mulciber had been to their home, but others had come, some while Lily was out and others while she wasn’t. So far, Lucius had come, Mulciber again, Macnair, Lestrange, Nott, Crabbe, and Rookwood. Lily only had to suffer through meeting Nott and Rookwood, both of whom she did not care for one bit, but neither were as annoying to her as Mulciber.
Their three-year anniversary was fast approaching, and Severus was using all his spare time when Lily was not home to make it the most special day of her life. He had big plans. He had rented a suit, and made sure that Lily had bought herself a new dress. Of course, she thought it was for a dinner party, but he was going to surprise her the day of. The day before their anniversary, his spirits were soaring higher than the clouds. Lily was off with that annoying Potter and his gang of misfits, but he didn’t care for once. He was preparing for his perfect day tomorrow.
He cleaned the house, leaving it spotless, and worked tirelessly to fix that leak in the bathroom that she had been complaining about. He even baked her a delicious cake, hoping to surprise her when she got home. He wanted the festivities to start as soon as she got home. After a day of hard work, Severus plopped down on the couch to take a nap. His breaths soon dragged on lazily, sleep overtaking him.
….
Lily laughed as James told her a joke, one about three gargoyles who went in a bar…one was bald, one was Mexican, and one couldn’t speak any language…well, it was funny. She shook her head at him, her smile lighting up her eyes.
“You’re so funny, James. I swear, you and Sirius are a kick together!” she sighed as she continued to shake her head in exasperation.
They were at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade to have a drink to celebrate James getting the desk job in the Auror office. James was absolutely ecstatic about it and was treating Remus, Sirius, Lily, and Peter to drinks.
“So when do you start?” asked Remus curiously. James took an enormous swig of Butterbeer before replying.
“Next Friday. I can’t wait…”
“I’m sure you can’t! Oh, Lily, did you speak to your boss yet…?”
“Yes, Remus, I did actually. He wants to set up an appointment for next week. He’ll send an owl your way when he’s ready for you to come in. I do hope you’ll get a job, Remus, I do,” she answered him, her voice sounding pitying for him. Peter coughed a little on his drink, and Lily shifted in her seat to look at him.
“Oh, Peter, have your found a job yet?”
“Er…no,” he replied, his soft voice a mere whimper. Lily always felt bad for poor Peter…he was so shy, timid.
“You’ll get one,” James told him as he patted him on the back encouragingly. Peter managed a grin.
“I-I know…b-b-but I’m fine just now living with Mum…every since Dad died, she’s been not r-r-right,” he stuttered, twisting his hands nervously in his lap. Lily put her hand on top of his and showed him her huge smile.
“If you ever need anything, Peter, just ask,” she told him softly. Her eyes were filled with a friendly warmth, and James never felt so drawn to her as he did now. She was so…nice. Matter of fact, she was probably an angel…
Lily stood up. “I have to get going…Severus is waiting for me. Our anniversary is tomorrow!” she told the boys excitedly. James and Remus exchanged glances, Sirius snorted into his fire whisky, and Peter hiccupped nervously. Lily didn’t seem to notice; her excitement for the next day seemed to have momentarily blinded her. James forced a horrible, fake smile onto his face, as did Remus. Peter looked at his feet, unable to meet her eyes. Sirius made no attempt to hide his dislike, and he snarled.
“That’s lovely, Lilybear,” teased James, standing up to give her a goodbye hug. Lily giggled and hugged him back.
James’ heart skipped quite a few beats when they hugged. He smelled her perfumed hair, and his stomach plummeted as if on a steep, downward, rollercoaster. Lily, at the same time, felt butterflies fluttering calmly around in her stomach, and she noticed how good he smelled up close. As they broke away, James ruffled her hair to tease her, and she blushed. And giggled. Good lord, giggled? Really? Lily quickly hurried from the place, immensely fearful of her feelings.
James sat back down, unaware that anything between them had happened. He sighed, his eyes far off in a distance. He loved her. He really did. He slumped in his chair, looking absolutely miserable. Sirius’ previous snarl turned into a look of pity.
“Mate, she’ll come around. After all…it’s
Snivellus.”
it's short...but I needed it...heehee(: enjoy!
