Dumbledore stood up; ready to do his announcements, but my eyes were on the man next to him. He had dark brown hair and seemed youngish, especially next to Dumbledore. He seemed perfectly at ease in his seat, talking to Professor Slughorn. I listened as Dumbledore went through saying welcome to all the new students, and welcome back to everyone else. Also as he reminded everyone on the rules. Particularly us. I heard it every year, didn’t stop me. “... And the forest, I’ll remind everyone, is forbidden.” I swear Dumbledore looked at James and me with a smile, his blue eyes sparkling. I looked at James, a mischievous smile creeping up onto my face. “Now, unfortunately, Professor Fisher has retired from his role as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.” Dumbledore carried on, and I looked back up. There was a murmur round the hall; Professor Fisher was generally pretty well liked. “But sad as that is, we have an excellent replacement. I would like to welcome Professor Fournier to Hogwarts.” The man beside Dumbledore stood up, and was applauded. “What do you think?” James asked as Dumbledore went on about some other stuff. “Who knows?” I said, shrugging. “We’ll have to find out, won’t we? But he doesn’t really... Well, look like a DADA teacher.” I said. Remus was speculative, thinking about it, and Peter was eagerly hanging onto every word we said. Remus smiled tiredly. “What does he look like, Sirius?” He asked, relatively amused by this. “I don’t know.” I shrugged. “Just not a DADA teacher.” “We gathered that much, Sirius.” James smirked. “Goodnight everyone, and get well rested for classes tomorrow.” Dumbledore said. Remus smiled. “I’ll see you guys in Gryffindor dorm. Prefect.” He said, walking away to lead the ickle first years. |

“Sirius, Sirius!” James called. “C’monnnnn, hurry up.” He said, his voice clearly one of impatience. “Where’s the fire?” I muttered under my breath. “Go away.” But I knew James would probably shove me onto the floor if I took any longer, so I rolled out of bed. “I’m hungry.” James moaned childishly. It was the first morning of Hogwarts, and, already, everything was everywhere. Except for Moony, he had all his clothes and things tidied up neatly by his bed. Before James could drag me down to the Great Hall I quickly through on my robes and left the common room with him. “You don’t have to be so impatient.” I muttered, still wanting to go back to bed and sleep. James just shrugged. Down in the Great Hall, Remus was already sitting at the Gryffindor table, eating cereal while he looked through the Daily Prophet. And Wormtail, of course, was still sleeping in our dorm. “Hey Moony, any news?” I asked sitting down beside him. “It depends what you consider news.” Remus said with a smile. “Captain of the Holy Head Harpies has just got married.” He said, placing the paper down on the table. I chuckled. “James will be jealous. Eh James?” I asked with a smirk, to which I got no reply. “James?” I looked around to where I was sure he had been sitting, and he was still there. He just wasn’t listening to a word I was saying. James watched Professor McGonagall walking down at the other end of the Gryffindor table with eager eyes. She was handing out class schedules and never, never would that excite James. I looked at and Remus but he just shrugged, bemused by James’ odd behaviour as I was. Eventually McGonagall reached us, and she handed us all a schedule. She turned to James and it was a surprise that she didn’t look stern as she addressed him. “Well done, Mr. Potter.” She said, placing an envelope in front of him, smiling even, before walking down the rest of the table. I stared at James. “Well, what is it?” Clearly James knew what it was by his excited look. “Open it.” He didn’t hesitate. James ripped the envelope open and a red and gold badge fell out. It was a Quidditch Captain’s badge. Now I understood James’ reaction. “This is so cool.” Peter chose that moment to run into the hall, breathless. Professor McGonagall gave him a stern look, but he ran towards us anyway. “Hey guys! What’s happening?” He asked sitting down so quickly he nearly fell of his seat. I rolled my eyes. “James is Quidditch Captain.” Remus explained. “Well done, James.” He smiled at his friend. “Yeah, well done, mate.” I smirked at James. “Now you might even be as cool as me. Well, nearly.” James was so awed by being captain it took him longer to realize what I'd said. "You only wish you could be as cool as me." He said, punching my arm. "Owwww." |
