Default Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment

Located in Diagon Alley’s North Side, Wiseacres prides itself in bringing you only the best equipment at a price no one can beat. The shop's name is emblazoned in gold letters on the large glass window to the left of the double doors. The window is home to a display of merchandise ranging from floo powder to fanged frisbees, star charts to sneakoscopes. In the middle of the display sits an advertising blackboard that every so often announces a sale.

Despite the wide array of products available, the interior of the shop is neatly organized. Upon walking in, the first things quests will notice is a display of telescopes ideal for Hogwarts students located just to the right of the doors. Maps and star/moon charts are rolled up and stacked on a rack beside the display. Games are displayed on a table toward the middle of the shop; concealers and detectors are shelved along the left wall. Several dark wood shelving units line the rest of the floor space. Each aisle is clearly marked with the type of merchandise it contains.

When you finish shopping, please make your way to the counter at the back of the shop. Here you can check out, inquire about gift wrapping or other services offered, and purchase breakable or expensive objects, such as rememberalls, hourglasses, crystal balls, and invisibility cloaks, kept in a locked glass cabinet behind the counter. In the market for a flying carpet? Those are kept behind a locked door next to the counter; only the shopkeeper can open it. Should anyone try to enter the showroom without permission, a caterwauling charm will sound. If you need help finding anything, the shopkeeper will be happy to assist!

Gabriel needed to stop telling his sister when he was going out, because he mentioned he would be going to Diagon Alley this week, and she had produced a list of the most random items for him to pick up while he was out, "if it was convenient." No, sister--not convenient to do your errands on a Saturday afternoon. Yet here he was with a list (a list!) that meant he couldn't just browse and wander and allow the errands to take him wherever they would.

Now what did she want from Wiseacre’s? He consulted the list as he stepped inside. Something….something… ah, there, she wanted an abacus and an everlasting candle? That was a weird combination, even for his sister. Still, he headed for the aisle with the candles.

He had needed something from here, too. If he could just remember what it was...

The thing about having half a million kids meant that you sort of didn't get much of a break from them when work was not there to save you. Didn't matter that the Auror job paid a lot better than the Hit Wizard one; only so many times a person could justify hiring a babysitter, or even accepting friends of the family doing some pro bono work. Jake actually had to be a parent sometimes.

Even though, just by the way, it had been an unmitigated disaster so far. But then it also had been (more so? less so? who even knew at this point) when he'd not been around for... the first one. So. Maybe his biological kids, at least, were just genetically predisposed to be the Worst™, and he had only helped them on their way. Well. There was maybe hope for the youngest, uhh... six. He was still holding out for Ez too.

Jake had two of the four-year-olds with him today, because apparently it was a good idea to take the most riled up ones with him while he ran weekend errands, to 'tire them out'. It was looking like a worse and worse decision with every passing moment.

He had the boys by the hoods of their coats - thanks to magic, they couldn't get very far from him, but Jake found they were less likely to play up when he did this, maybe because there was a more obvious reminder that he was there - and had been letting them look at the shelves of candles, as they seemed to be so enraptured by them. But Jake had only come in here to get a Sneakoscope for Milo (he'd been talking about one for months), and had only so long to spare. "Alright boys, we need to- Mason, don't touch." He quickly reached down to tug the Everlasting Candle from his penultimate child's little goblin hands, placing it back on the shelf and looking around at whoever had just joined the aisle, fully prepared to apologise to a disgruntled shopkeeper. Happened a lot.

But it wasn't the shopkeeper. "Oh, hey there. Melo, right?" From work? Definitely from work. Please, look away; Jake preferred to be remembered in Work Mode, not... whatever this was.

To say Gabriel was unprepared to encounter someone from work would have been an understatement. Not to mention, an actual Auror. He paused halfway down the aisle when he was addressed, taking a long moment to process what was happening. Mr. Upstead, the Auror, was here shopping...with little children...and talking to him.

"Uhhhh...." Gabriel blanked. What were words? He was pretty sure Melo was him. His name. Yes, he was Gabriel Melo. He gulped, then nodded. Say something, Gabe...something coherent. "Mister Upstead, hello, yes."

Good going, Gabe.

Gabriel wanted nothing more than to walk away from this unnecessarily uncomfortable encounter, but...Mr. Upstead the Auror was standing right in front of the candles he needed. Gabriel did not move his feet. He looked at the candles, then the two children, then the older man. Was he supposed to say hi to the children? Ignore them? Gabriel, normally able to get himself into or out of any conversation he wanted, was at a loss. Worlds were colliding, and he did. not. like it.

Luckily(?) for all involved, work brain had been switch off for the moment, and Jake was indulging in not needing to work any harder to analyse the situation than he needed to. Otherwise, he might have picked up on some discomfort, and that wouldn't be fun for any of them.

"Jake is fine," he replied, while acutely aware he still knew the lad as simply 'Melo', and had only just referred to him as such. Also? Jake was not fine. Jake was always the furthest thing from fine. But them's the breaks. "Oh, are we in your w-... Mason." He pulled the candle out of his son's near-vicelike grip yet again. "I swear I will trade you in for a Sneakoscope." Both boys apparently thought this was the funniest thing in the world, and Jake used their momentary distraction to scoop both of them up, one under each arm like a couple of giggling, wriggling parcels.

He moved out of the way of the candles Melo had been eyeing up, in case that really was what he was after. "Sorry about that."

Gabriel's social skills finally caught up with him, and he managed to nod and acknowledge Upstead--Jake's almost question. "Yes, sir, er--sorry, Mister Jake, I am meant to be getting one of those candles," he gestured, but waited for all three Upsteads to be out of the way before reaching in for an Everlasting Candle.

He looked curiously at how Mr. Jake Upstead was holding the two children, and flattened his hair nervously. There were no young children in his family, so he never really knew how to react to them. Laugh at their antics? Exchange knowing glances with their parents? He tried both, allowing a smile at the more adult man as he clung to the candle and tried to remember what else he needed from this store.

"Abacus?"

Apparently his social skills had wandered off again. Hopefully Upstead would not report to their department head that Gabriel ~couldn't carry a conversation~ because he swore he could. Just not today.

Mister Jake. That was a... actually, no, that wasn't a new one at all, now he thought about it. He'd been called that once or twice before, and so allowed it now. Jake had also not been paying close enough attention to which candle he'd put back on the shelf, and only hoped that Melo either had been, or didn't mind claiming one that the kid had had his grubby mitts all over.

"Bless you." Jacob. No. No jokes today. Not with this one, who was giving off some vague Ezra vibes, which meant that Jake should really know better. He cleared his throat, and gestured a little way along the shelves with a nod of his head. Hands full, and all. "Over there." Speaking of social skills, Jake happened to dislike small talk, and yet this was clearly one of those times when he should probably engage in just that. "What year are you going into?" Of the YATI programme, yes. Context. Who needed it.

Luckily for Jake, the candle in Gabriel's hand was destined for a different Melo, so he didn't really mind if it had sticky fingerprints all over it. If he had been paying attention, he probably would have purposefully selected the grubby candle. But alas, he was too distracted by the presence of his boss? colleague? Mister Upstead. And children.

Gabriel grinned at the joke. Abacus was a weird word, wasn't it. Those ancient people and their mathematics words. "Thank you," he said, hoping that would be it and he could go to the other shelves and they could both pretend this exchange never happened.

Year? What year was he? Gabriel luckily didn't need the context clue, he was more than happy to jump into work mode around work people. It was more comfortable than being in personal mode or errands mode around work people. "About to start my second year," he said. He wanted to add another Mister Jake or a sir but restrained himself. He was an adult, right? So he didn't have to be so formal with other adults, even those old enough to be his parent. "It is really exciting, sir." Apparently he couldn't stop that last sir from slipping out.

Apologies, young Melo, Jake didn't exactly have the knack for knowing when an interaction had reached its natural conclusion - working on it. Gradually closing in on fifty and... still working on it. Terrible combination with not being fond of idle chit chat.

But it seemed to be working out well enough today. Jake smiled at the lad. "That's great to hear. It's an excellent program." His kids had, for the past few moments, been entertaining themselves with pulling faces at each other, but now Mason was fidgeting and doing his level best to land a kick in Jake's back (and somehow managing; the kid had talent), and Hunter had started one of his most effective whines (he had a real ability for knowing how to reach the most irritating pitch). Giving in to their pint-sized demands, Jake set them both down so they were stood on the ground again, but kept a firm grip on their hoods once more, and continued talking like normal. "I missed out on the YATI stuff myself, was a couple of years too old to apply by the time I even considered law enforcement." The program had actually been established the very same year Jake had left Hogwarts, but it was perhaps for the best he'd missed the opportunity. He'd been a little... difficult... in those years. "Are you aiming for Auror too, or Hit Wizard maybe?"

As he spoke, he made sure to gently tug his tiny miscreants back out of the way, in case Gabriel wanted a free path to grab that abacus. Jake opted not to mention that he need not call him 'sir' either; no good to be constantly correcting the lad. Perhaps he'd catch on eventually.

Ohhhh they were really going for this small talk thing, were they. Okay. Gabriel nodded in agreement. Yes, excellent YATI program. He was learning things, just...not how to hold a conversation. They expected him to already know that. Maybe if he had a dungbomb handy, he'd be more comfortable.

Gabriel made a mental note to stop by Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes later.

He was surprised that Mister Upstead Jake hadn't known he wanted to do law enforcement right away. He, Gabriel, had always known, just...well, he'd attempted university first. A very failed attempt, as nothing at university was as interesting as the idea of catching bad guys. "My goal is to become an Auror," he said brightly, relaxing slightly as he adjusted to the consistently work-related talk with a work-related person in a non-work-related space. "Do you think--maybe--could I come on a patrol with you sometime? Mister--uh, sorry, Jake?" Was patrol the right word? Mission? Hunt? He really hoped he chose the right word.

He had completely forgotten about the abacus. He was distracted by both Jake and the little Upsteads. Very distracting family, there.

And Gabriel promised he could be a good conversationalist given adequate warning.

Jake allowed himself a smile at that. Yep, yep, it was usually Auror. Actually, it had been the Auror job he'd been so enamoured with himself at that age - uh... a little older than that age, as he'd just mentioned. He'd ended up a Hit Wizard in most of that intervening time and been content enough with it, but still got to that original goal in the end. Of course, by that point, it was mostly because they had so many kids, and so many more on the way, that it had been necessary to make the move to the more dangerous job for the better salary, seeing as he was well-suited to it.

A problem of his own creation, thanks to poor life-planning? Maybe. But he would not be accepting constructive criticism at this time. He'd addressed it, hadn't he? ... Sort of.

"'Course-" Jake broke off momentarily, distracted by his darling little children now laying punches into his legs and also each other. He tugged both their hoods again to get their attention, and leaned down to speak to them. "Oi, quit showing off. Go look at the candles if you want, but remember I'm watching you. Menaces." Jake let them both go, watching to make sure they skidded to a halt in front of the shelf in question, then turned back to his colleague. Colleague? ... Colleague. "Sorry about that. Again." Where was he? ... Right. "Anyway, yeah, of course you can. I'd be glad to have you along on a patrol. I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunities for all that." Nothing quite like learning on the job either, which was sort of the whole point of the YATI thing after all.

Mister Upstead Jake's children were both distracting and heart-wrenching. They reminded Gabriel of himself and his own brother, if they had ever been allowed in a store like this at that age. He didn't think they ever had, given there weren't a lot of stores like this in...wherever they'd lived when he was that age. Gabriel didn't really remember all the places. Rainforest kind of all looked the same, regardless of which city you claimed you were near.

But back on this awkward conversation, Gabriel returned his attention to the older man. The Real Auror. Such a cool guy. Who was saying...? Who was saying he could come on a patrol! Gabriel grinned like a four-year-old with an everlasting candle.

"Right, yes! Thank you, si--Jake," Gabriel said, correcting himself at the last moment to be less formal. "I look forward to it!" The young YATI refocused his attention on the shelves again. He still needed that silly abacus, didn't he? "Well, it was good running into you, Mister Upstead," he said, preparing to go get the abacus, pay and leave. And accidentally returning to the Mister Upstead address because he was no longer fully focused on Upstead.

Gabriel's enthusiasm was endearing. Reminded Jake of why he had, all those years ago, wanted to get into working with young people, guiding them, finding them a passion with the aim of helping them to stay out of trouble. Still was what he wanted to do, really, and sometimes he did it, but the mentoring gig was not nearly as steady as Auror...ing, which was extremely demanding in and of itself. Jake's time and attention had to be pulled every which way what with the job and the million kids - and the older they got, all of them, the more he worried about them - so that had gone on the back burner for a while. Until someone was referred to him, at least. But there was still the opportunity to guide the Law Enforcement kids, the younger employees, when and where he could, when and where they were happy to let him.

"Brilliant," he said, smiling back. "I'll look for you at work. We can arrange it or just grab an opportunity that crops up." Always plenty happening, always something to jump into. But for now, yes, moving on. Jake had to continue on the quest for his grandson's Sneakoscope, and he supposed he should also be a responsible parent, and usher his children along with him. "You too, Melo. Enjoy your abacus."

Luckily(?), before he could think too long on that sentence, he heard something that sounded suspiciously like a shelf full of Everlasting Candles, plus two four year olds, crashing to the ground behind him. Sighing heavily and rattling off a quick goodbye to the young YATI, Jake turned and strode back to his children, who had apparently tried to turn Wiseacres into their own personal climbing frame.
