Default The Private Parlour

If you are in need of a place to hold a meeting or a conference, look no further than The Leaky Cauldron. This Private Parlour has been used in the past for meetings with the Minister of Magic. Ministry members may book this room for meetings or conferences.

Inside, the room is made of dark wood. Several small tables run down the length of the room and many cozy, rolling chairs line it. If fewer people are attending, the table can be shortened for a more personal meeting. The room is eloquent, with tapestries hanging on the wall and portraits of famous wizards and witches line the wall, willing to give their advice if you want it (or if you don't). In each corner sits a suit of armor, regal and rigid.

Unless you have reserved this room, though, you are not permitted to enter. Please direct all inquiries about the use of this room to Ryoma.

Meeting? Jared had a feeling that meetings here consisted of two people only when at least one of them was a Minister, but that did not bother him. Did something bother him?

Yes.

The feeling that he chose the same kind of places - spotless, expensive, elegant, subtle - as his father.

The table inside had been shortened, an elegant circular one set for two that had a center-piece consisting of fresh red-and-white roses but, other than that, the Private Parlour remain unchanged, the lighting, decorations, aura, all elegant. Subtly beautiful.

Jared, a muffler scarf round his neck, knotted gracefully at the front, came to a halt at a spot located at a little distance from the door.

Waiting.

Renée had gone over the note several times since she'd gotten it, but none of the times had convinced her not to come. Luckily, it had been easy to let her father know she might be late visiting, and her gifts to him and her brother were easily owled to be there on time anyway. Not to mention she already had most of her closet here in London, if not at Hogwarts. Not much need for dinner dresses at school, but she had a feeling Jared would get a kick out of the outfit she'd put together now. At least, it reminded her a bit of certain creatures that had come up in their previous conversations, creatures that were particular to herself. It wasn't exactly December-appropriate, but with a few charms in place she'd stayed warm enough on the way over.

Upon entering the Leaky, she'd raised an eyebrow as it seemed she was directed toward a private room. At least it seemed they'd be free of prying eyes, although she imagined any students were either still at Hogwarts or at home with their families for the holiday. As she walked into the room, though, she grinned as she saw him standing there waiting. "Did you think I wouldn't make it?," she asked, noting that at least he looked more prepared for the weather. It was warm enough inside though that she was comfortable, even if she left her coat on for the time being.

Footsteps. Jared's rather lazy thoughts returned to the present at the light sound of heels. He smiled, a light but genuine smile as Renée stepped in, and offered her an arm.

"Did you want me to?" he asked, grinning.

Was the phoenix touch intentional? That indeed being the case wouldn't surprise him.

For one reason or another, it didn't really surprise Renée when she found herself facing an offered arm. Her smile didn't falter as she took it, at least, and she let Jared take her the rest of the way inside the room. Perhaps it was how elegant it all looked, that made her unsurprised, and yet she could sense that there had been a bit of unease before her arrival. It remained not commented on, however, as he spoke.

"Of course not," she replied lightly. "I can't say I've ever had anoyone actually standing there waiting for me, however. You might spoil me, Monsieur Descoteaux," she added with another little grin, teasing. It seemed she resorted to addressing him that way when they were being particularly amusing to each other.

"To be honest, I feel a bit underdressed for the decor." Not to mention the treatment, but she figured going too formal would have just seemed odd in the Leaky. At least he didn't seem taken aback with her outfit, which made her wonder if he'd understood the inspiration.

"I'll take your word for it, mademoiselle," Jared said, the lazy grin lingering, party because of the sense of easy camaraderie that had sprung up as expected, partly because of her grin.

"That's probably a good thing. I like to stand... out." The grin returned before it had even faded, accompanied by an amused light in his green eyes. "Mademoiselle," he added, as she referred to him as Monsieur Descoteaux. He pulled up a chair for her, out of habit and not quite registering the action, sitting down once she had.

"Is that my cue to tell you that you look beautiful?" His tone had acquired that teasing touch that seemed typical of their conversations.

Renée simply gave Jared another grin as he basically said she was the last word on the topic. It wasn't worth really saying anything, even though she found it entirely amusing. It was interesting how they always seemed to settle into this relaxed sort of teasing camaraderie, not to mention she still felt a bit of pleasure at getting him to grin like that.

"You do it well," she replied, still teasing. Although there was a bit of truth to the matter, as he really did look like he belonged in a situation like, as well as the dangerous ones he'd alluded to in their previous conversations. The dichotomy was intriguing, and often led to their more amusing discussions, really. She laughed, however, as he returned her semi-facetious formality, but calmed down a fraction as he pulled her chair out for her. "Thank you," she said, a bit curiously, even as she took the seat and allowed him to take his own. It seemed they'd gone back to the elegance for the moment.

"Well, I can't say I was cueing you for anything, but thank you again," she said, smile once again returning as she gazed at him across the small table and heard the teasing return. "I couldn't really resist," she added with another grin.

"My pleasure," Jared grinned. He'd rather stand out than not, at least in most situations. He'd always believed being part of those that didn't stand out meant one had stopped trying out new things. Experimenting. He could be mistaken, but he had never thought so.

Not yet, at any rate.

"De rien." The standard response, for once. He and Renée hardly ever stuck to those, but then, perhaps that was why they got along so well.

"I haven't said it yet," Jared pointed out teasingly as she thanked him once more. She did look it, however, and he expected she already knew that. Couldn't resist the teasing? "You know, that seems like a mutual problem." He smiled, then said more seriously - though still lightly,

"How have your holidays been so far?"

Not much left of them, but he could appreciate the chink in the routine Hogwarts had set.

Renée returned the grin that had accompanied the response she'd gotten from Jared, knowing it meant he had taken it all the way she'd expected. That was one of the reasons they always seemed to get along, she thought. Somehow they were able to read each other, even without her using her particular capabilities. Not to mention she'd figured out enough to be fairly certain he felt standing out was better than the alternative. Excpet when it came to the admirers, as she had a feeling he'd rather not have those. It was too bad they didn't seem to have a say in that, though.

She'd nodded slightly as he resorted to French in response to her thanking him, amused that the mood in the room seemed to make that not as strange. Of course, it wasn't particularly strange anyway, as their first meeting had established his place of origin, making the language not that odd. But she laughed lightly as he spoke again. "Very true. But you wouldn't have asked about the cue if you hadn't thought about saying it," she pointed out, mischievously. If he was going to tease her, she wasn't about to back down. And besides, she was like any other female, liking flattery, however secret she liked to keep that. "It does. We seem to not let it get to us, though," she added with a little grin. Somehow she didn't see an inability to resist teasing each other a hardship.

She leaned back in her seat, however, as he spoke about the holidays. A more serious topic needed a more serious response, however light things still stayed, and she shrugged a little. "They've been lovely. Short, but I've enjoyed them. I was planning on trying to visit my father and brother before we had to get back, but it seems that visit will be rather brief. I got their Christmas gifts sent already, though, so it should work out," she said, completely honestly. Her editor had wanted to know how much she'd gotten ready for publication, so half her time at her flat had been spent with that. Luckily she'd gotten everything ironed out. "How have yours been?"

Her editor had wanted to know how much she'd gotten ready for publication, so half her time at her flat had been spent with that. Luckily she'd gotten everything ironed out. "How have yours been?"

The last of the thoughts about his father and how similar their tastes could be on certain fronts, thoughts that had been hazily lurking in some unpleasant corner of his mind, departed as Renée's laughed. For now, at least, he did not have to ponder over something that he liked to believe could not define him.

"Of course I'd thought about saying it," Jared said. "Experience tells me ladies expect those kind of compliments." He made no effort to let the amused light in his eyes fade. "I figured that you might too, mademoiselle." The teasing? His tones as good as said that two could play at that game. Frankly, though, he found it pleasant fun, and her next comment pretty much confirmed that she did not feel too differently about it, either. "That's probably another mutual problem," he laughed.

"Better a brief visit than none," Jared offered. He hadn't seen his parents, though he knew he had been expected by them the day before and, try as he might, he could not feel guilty about avoiding at least one of his parents. He'd see them later tonight, though, and that meant at least his mother could inspect him to her heart's content and be glad that he hadn't done something to get himself killed yet. He didn't see what made her think he might do something of that sort, but it seemed she couldn't help it. "Making arrangements for presents in advance is always a plus." That reminded him of a certain present he had sent, and he couldn't keep back a light smile as he spoke.

"Quite good, so far. I met Gabriella, and even though meeting my dear sister means listening to all kinds of unflattering comments -" Don't give me that look, it makes you look dour. I think you've gotten fat, handsome. Has anyone told you your taste in cuisine has gotten atrocious? If you don't get rid of that haircut, you'll be a bachelor for the rest of your life. Only, it had sounded even more unflattering, even if he had known she had not meant most of it, because she has said it all in perfect French, and said it grinning. "- I had an excellent time."

And it seemed their goblets had filled themselves.

"Oh, so it's merely experience," Renée said slowly, feigning disappointment that quickly devolved into a bit of a laugh. It was too hard to really take things like that to heart, especially as he did have a point. She had liked the flattery, like any other girl. Not to mention compliments had been hard to get since she'd come to England, or at least to Hogwarts. At least, verbal compliments, as she still remembered Salander during her first lesson, dazed and confused, and a half smile crept onto her face at the memory. That grew into a full smile as Jared spoke again, though. "It's a problem?" It was certainly mutual, but she didn't see their not taking the teasing to heart as a problem. Neither one was doing it to be vindictive. It was all in good fun.

"Very true," she replied as he spoke about brief visits. "And I'm lucky in that they understand that." Well, they sort of understood. She imagined Sebastian didn't really believe she couldn't have worked on her manuscript back in New York, but she wasn't about to try and explain to her younger brother that that hadn't exactly been the only reason she'd stayed here in England this long during the holidays. He would have had just as much of an issue if she'd been there and come back for this, and she was ready for some annoyance once she'd arrived in New York. Annoyance shortly distracted by gifts. "Especially when owl post is required," she finished, as her companion for the night had spoken about making arrangements. Owl post across the Atlantic, especially.

She listened as he spoke of his sister, though, trying not to laugh at the idea of anyone peppering Jared with unflattering comments. "I think it's just part of having a sibling. They get instant permission to irritate us at any time," she observed, before deciding it was okay to smile. It all proved appropriate as he finished his thought and didn't exactly seem to be taking it entirely seriously. "That's always nice to hear. It sounds more exciting than my story, at least," she responded with a grin. before glancing down at their goblets to see they'd apparently decided to start the dinner off with drinks.

"Your work, or is the Leaky getting more elaborate in their serving methods?," she inquired lightly, taking up her goblet to sip the contents. No matter who was responsible, at least they'd done a good job. And it made things even more interesting.

"Your work, or is the Leaky getting more elaborate in their serving methods?," she inquired lightly, taking up her goblet to sip the contents. No matter who was responsible, at least they'd done a good job. And it made things even more interesting.

"I wouldn't say that," Jared said, his smile a mock, facetious kind of secretive. She did look beautiful. "Galleon for your thoughts," he added, as a light sort of half-smile flickered across her face. He assumed his comment had made her remember something. Something fun, perhaps. Then her smile had become a real one, and he grinned. "Problem makes it sound more challenging," he pointed out.

More challenging and, hence, more fun.

"Ah, yes. It's good to have family that understands - most of the time." He doubted there existed families that understood each other all the time and, frankly, the thought of being understand at all times came across as rather boring. He nodded, in silent agreement, as she added to his sentence. Planning ahead has its perks. Especially if life-threatening people and situations have a tendency of deciding to prevent one from getting things such as that, letters and presents, done right on time. That really could become a bit of problem.

"Indeed. Even if I haven't come across many people that, if they want to irritate someone, consider that they might not have instant permission to," Jared said, tones semi-joking. "Or what I've heard of your story," he pointed out. He hadn't just assumed she had told him all of it. In fact, he had a feeling she hadn't and even though that did not bother him, it did make the thought of her story more interesting, for him, than his own.

"I believe we'll have to thank the Leaky Cauldron for this," Jared said. He hadn't realized how many services the place offered, until recently. Picking up his goblet, he raised it, a smile playing around his mouth. "How does 'To Anastasia' sound?" He asked. The phoenix touch to her outfit. Lazygrin.

Renée inclined her head slightly as Jared spoke, intrigued by the smile. It seemed that comment was intended as another compliment, for which she smiled, but as usaul, there seemed to be something else behind it as well. Nothing worth actually speaking of, but something there. And she laughed lightly in response to the next words out of his mouth. "They're worth that much to you?," she teased. It wasn't like he hadn't gotten even the slightest idea of the memory she'd had before, when they'd spoken in the trophy room about admirers. It was always possible he thought her thoughts were more intriguing, but as the conversation continued, she shrugged. Still smiling. "Who can turn down a challenge?" It was a good question, especially in present company.

When he agreed with her thoughts about family, she found herself shrugging again, still lightly. "Only the very lucky would have a family who understands them all of the time. Or possibly the very unlucky." She imagined being understood all the time would get tiring after a while, at least. It seemed he agreed with that idea as well, if she read between the lines. She always had a tendency of reading between the lines, when she wasn't using other tactics. It seemed he agreed with her idea of planning as well, if the nod was to be believed. She had yet to find anyone who didn't believe in one form of planning ahead or another. There had to be someone out there, though, not that she was really looking.

She grinned a little at his next comment, as it seemed there was unsaid meaning behind it. As usual. "That's where a thick skin comes in. irritation can only get so far if there's no reaction," she pointed out. Or not the reaction intended, as she still felt was the case with certain students back at Hogwarts. They weren't here to think about that, and it was fairly simple to push that to the back of her mind as he decided her statement had needed a disclaimer. "Touché," she replied, the half-smile on her face saying that she hadn't taken the comment too seriously. "I'd imagine that could be said about anyone." Including himself. He was accurate in thinking she wasn't entirely an open book yet, but she wasn't about to admit it. It was too amusing not to.

"Of course," she said, nodding her head as he spoke of the Leaky being responsible for the service. "It would be rude not to." Delicately picking up her own goblet as he picked up his own, she regarded him for a moment, eyes unable to hide the mischievous sparkle. "It sounds lovely," she replied, lifting her glass a bit higher. "Appropriate. In a way." She knew where it had come from.

"I'm considering saying they're priceless, but there's this little voice in my head that's telling me that's as clichéd as a cliché can be," Jared grinned, not letting go of the facetiousness. "I'm not expected to answer that, am I?" He added, at her rhetorical question.

He rather agreed with the latter part of her statement. The very unlucky. Never landing into conflicts could become exhausting, after a fashion. But Jared figured she knew that, already. His basic thoughts on matters like these had never exactly been hard to predict. Constancy means stagnation, at least in most cases. There have always, of course, been exceptions to that rule. He nodded, before grinning at her next remark.

"You're not saying that being thick-skinned is an asset, are you?" he asked, giving the question a mock shocked tone. Her response to his remark about secrets, sort of secrets at least, made his expression change into an amused one. "And I'd imagine that's a good way to evade a straight answer," he said, not missing that she had done exactly that - evaded a direct response.

"And what way might that be?" Jared asked, his teasing tones a result of the mischievous look his question had been met with.

"And what way might that be?" Jared asked, his teasing tones a result of the mischievous look his question had been met with.

The response her teasing question received amused Renée even more. As well as oddly flattered, again. It was getting quite interesting, but for now she was going to attribute it all to the location. For all she knew, things would go back to normal once the holidays were over and they were back at Hogwarts. "It's a cliché, but that doesn't mean a girl wouldn't like to hear it," she replied, grinning back at Jared. It was hard to completely let go of the facetiousness, no matter how strange moments had been. "And no. I wouldn't expect a response, especially as I'm fairly certain of what it would be."

It seemed their conversation had lapsed slightly, or at least there had been another thoughtful pause after her introduction of luck into the mix. It had been an intriguing idea, but she hadn't expected for it to have made that much impact. She fully believed not having any conflict, even inside a family setting, would be dreadfully dull. Resisting the urge to pry, as he still wasn't talking, she was grateful when he finally grinned and spoke again. That curiosity issue was getting to be a bit irritating, even if she knew the fact he knew about what she could do made things easier. She still was trying not to take advantage of that fact, even as there was the slightest bit of curiosity as to if he'd block her again.

And she acted innocent as he feigned shock at the comment. "An asset? Not necessarily," she replied, impish sparkle coming back into her eyes. "Not being completely open to all emotions can come in useful, though." Like when dealing with death, especially mysterious types. That brought her too close to going back to remembering what had sent her back to New York years ago, preventing her from furthering her travels, however, and she forced herself to think of other things. Like the fact Jared had seemingly picked up on her evasion, which brought another grin to her face. "Maybe." If he kept making it easy for her, shortly she'd have to figure out another way to avoid telling him everything outright, simply out of boredom. It hadn't happened yet.

"Well, nobody can say she hasn't been an inspiration," she replied lightly, as he teased her again about her outfit and Anastasia's influence. It didn't happen often, but she couldn't deny it currently. Not when she knew he knew about the whole situation, whether or not he knew it had been to amuse him anyway. She was still evading out of habit, though. Mischievously, but still habit.

See? Ladies do have an affinity for compliments. Most men, or at least most of the men he had met, didn't seem to care about them as much, for some reason. Probably the same reason they don't require several hours to dress to their satisfaction. "Point taken," Jared grinned.

He rather thought Renée's feigned innocence might have come off better, if her eyes had not been holding that mischievous sparkle. As it was, she looked anything but innocent at that moment. "That seems to imply," he said lazily. "That it can be an asset." He could feign all the shock he might but, in the end, he couldn't exactly disagree. Being thick-skinned has its advantages - some even a harmless kind of fun, some running much deeper - and she said as much, half a moment later. Though he couldn't help feeling like there was more to her comment than could be seen on the surface, and he gave her just the faintest look of interest, as if saying so.

And the maybe? "Always a good answer," he said, the teasing tones somewhat returning.

He inclined his head, accepting the fact, her phoenix being a source of inspiration, as a matter of course. "To Anastasia," he said lightly. The menu cards had appeared by the time he set down the goblet. Jared picked one up. "Shall we order?" The conversation, despite the thoughtful pauses that punctuated it every now and then, seemed like it could go on for several days. And not in a bad way.

It seemed she'd said something that made Jared think, again, and Renée took that as another point for herself. They weren't really competing, but it was another form of amusement. That kept her from failing in her personal goal of not using her ability unless she absolutely needed to. As far as she knew, from experience, girls, women, any female appreciated acknoweldgment of the time she'd taken to pick out an outfit. Either way, she grinned back as he spoke. That was welcome acknowledgment as well.

And it seemed her feigned innocence had worked just about as well as it usually did, although she planned on blaming it on himself. This time, at least. It was just too hard to not get into that mode of impishness around him. She inclined her head slightly at his lazy comment, though. "In fact, the implication has its point. being thick-skinned is occasionally an asset, but a person needs to know when they can let those walls down as well," she replied, almost feeling like she'd ventured into yet another topic altogether. That was a strange feeling, and the look on his face seemed to relay that he'd had a similar feeling about it all. It seemed that was going to be another idea that would remain unsaid for now, though, as she was relieved when he went back to the teasing.

"That's why it always shows up eventually," she teased back with another smile, before raising her glass again. "To Anastasia," she echoed, before taking a sip from her drink. Eyes flickering downward, she smiled around the edge of the glass as she saw the Leaky had been efficient yet again. Either that or they really wanted the two of them to leave, but she had a feeling that wasn't the intent. Efficency had its place, that was for sure. "We may as well," she said, looking back up at him as he spoke. They could always continue their conversation while they ate.

True enough. Jared nodded. He had a feeling that, should this topic be pursued, it might lead to some dead-ends or, at least, secretive corners. He doubted either of them had come here to discuss secrets, though, and so he left it at that, at the nod. Once again, a definite unwillingness to pry, at least in such a matter as this.

The sudden change in the mood, courtesy her teasing response about maybe's showing up eventually, made Jared laugh. "That tops today's list of clever comebacks by a certain person," he teased back. "And speaking of this certain person, she has yet to teach me Divination." He hadn't forgotten about that, and now seemed like as a good time as any to discuss her subject and the possibility of him ever coming to terms with it. In more than one way, actually. Though that thought, like a sudden breeze, left as soon as it came.

Giving her a light nod, Jared picked up one of the menus. "This seems like a refined form of self service," he grinned, as he looked down at it, the fine print detailing one had to read out the name of a dish, for it to appear. How the table set itself, items shifting smoothly on their own, was actually impressive spell-work. Then again, he hadn't expected less than impressive spell-work from the place, so he couldn't say it came across as a surprise. Even if it did differ from that apparent in French restaurants.

Jared's silence when it came to their non-argument about thick skins didn't bother Renée in the slightest, as she imagined the conversation would just turn into something circular where neither of them really revealed too much or got the upper hand. She had a feeling he'd eventually get information from herself, as that seemed inevitable with how comfortable she usually was while talking to him. If it could be delayed, however, that would be fine as well. Not ruin the holiday with her sad tale. She couldn't deny her own curiosity to know what he was keeping from her, though.

Those thoughts dissipated as she heard him laugh, and his comment elicited a laugh of her own. "Should I be flattered?," she teased in return. "I wasn't aware there was a list." That involved focus she hadn't expected, to say the least, and she found herself laughing again as he kept speaking. "That certain person hasn't forgotten either, but it seems we haven't arrived at the opportune time." More accurately, they seemed to distract each other with other topics, and she didn't imagine there was much she could introduce here. Maybe . . . but it seemed more important that they continue the rest of their event. She'd let him make the first move, even though this seemed a baby step toward accomplishing her goal of proving she could teach even him.

Attention shifted to the menus, and she scanned the delicate printing for a few moments before glancing up at him again with a half-smile. "Refined service, for sure. It seems similar to some spells that have been seen at Hogwarts, however. During holidays and such. So refined but not particularly individual," she said lightly. The Leaky certainly had a more impressive menu selection, however, and that gave them points in her books. She certainly hadn't expected this. It would be hard to choose.

"Flattered because it tops the list, or flattered because there is a list?" Jared asked, a grin crossing his face. He hadn't expected her to take the remark in the literal sense, and it amused him that she had. He ought to have seen that coming, really.

Smiling faintly as she chose to refer to herself as he had - "certain person" and all - he had to ask, "Does that mean the opportune time does not look like dinner?" For future reference. "Or does that mean," he added, the grin returning, "That that certain person has secretly decided not to give teaching me that particular subject a try, after all?" Knowing Renée, he doubted that; but even then, he could not keep the faint hint of an amused sort of challenge out of his tones.

"I'm afraid I haven't had the same, first-hand experience of Hogwarts during holidays." Though there had been some mentions that he remembered. Even then, spells that responded to particular names seemed like a nice, if not terrific, change, Jared thought as the order materialized. "Another topic that certain person seems to know more about, than I do," he added lazily, the green eyes seeming amused all over again.

The very reaction her teasing comment had received amused Renée highly, and the grin that appeared on her face didn't hide that one bit. "Flattered that even a hypothetical list would be made," she replied mischievously. She knew he was amused by the thought she'd truly taken things to mean he actually had a list of the comebacks she created. She wasn't that naïve, to say the least. She'd let him have the thought, however, because it was still fun to feel like she could get him to relax and be amused like this. Him thinking she was that literal at least for now didn't bother her in the long run, and actually only gave her more openings to surprise him later.

But then their conversation had gone to the long-standing challenge of Divination and teaching him, and she chose to murmur her order to her plate before replying. She didn't want to get too distracted and forget what she'd finally decided on for her meal, at least. Once that was taken care of, she looked back up at him with another smile. "Dinner is only an opportune time if we were discussing food-based divination," she pointed out, before laughing at the renewed challenge. "You're deceived if you even entertain the thought she'd back down that easily." It was oddly amusing referring to herself in the third person, especially when that was as oblique as it was turning out to be. He'd been the first to do so, however, so she was willing to keep the charade up.

"I haven't forgotten," she said lightly, glancing down as she noticed her food had appeared as the menu had told. She hadn't exactly been trying to emphasize differences, or prove her knowledge. It had just been an idle comment, and she smiled as he spoke lazily. Picking up the first bit of ood from her plate, she regarded him for a moment. "I'd imagine that certain person could say there are some thing you know better as well," she responded, before applying herself to the first bite. The food was definitely better than she'd expected, but then the entire night was quite nice. Unexpected, really.

"If it's hypothetical lists that are under consideration, I suppose you have a right to be," Jared said, smile light. That did seem to mean unexpected focus, all things considered.

He transferred his attention to the table, for a brief half-second, as a pause in the conversation occurred and lingered, and the table in question re-set itself; looking back up at her as she spoke again. "Fantastic how Divination doesn't seem to let any time be an inopportune one," he said, a teasing touch slipping back into his tones. Hard to let go of it around Renée, really. Not that he minded. And it seemed there was a level of Divination that could be discussed even now, though Jared doubted the food itself might appreciate it being subjected to it. Not that he had any idea how any type of food-based Divination occurred. If 'occurred' was even the word.

"Does that mean she has decided to subject this dinner to some of her skills?" he asked, grinning at her next remark. He hadn't though she might back down from the challenge of sorts, just as he didn't think she had decided to make the dinner an object of her Divination skills after all, but teasing her hadn't lost its appeal yet. Nor, apparently, had referring to Renée in the third person. Especially since he had, after a fashion, gotten her to do it herself.

"I'd hope it isn't just your imagination," Jared said, a mischievous grin flickering across his features as he spoke, before directing his attention, at long last, to the food that had appeared.

Letting the flavors of the food she'd been served wash over her a little, it took a moment for Renée to respond to Jared's continued teasing comments. Although she'd acknowledged them being said with an amused poilteness, she hadn't wanted to speak with her mouth full or anything. Not when everything around them was so lovely and elegant, and when he'd said she was beautiful so recently. Or said he'd been thinking about it, which she still thought was pretty much the same thing, and oddly amusing. "You were the first to bring it up," she pointed out with a grin, as soon as she finished swallowing the last bite she'd taken. It seemed he'd understood her facetious comment earlier, which wasn't unsurprising. They seemed to inherently understand each other most of the time anyway.

She'd sat back in her seat once again as their conversation continued, letting her food wait a bit while the challenge was continuing. It wouldn't go anywhere, unless he got too ambitous in the teasing and tried to steal it. She was fairly certain the spells set for the meal wouldn't shift before they'd finished a course, at least. "No, it seems to have the ability to be done at any time. Well, as long as there's time to interpret things," she said with a little laugh. She imagined one wouldn't be worrying overly much about Divination in truly dangerous situations, just as she imagined he'd understand that as well. Manticores and all, since she thought she'd never forget that. It seemed she was the phoenix girl and he was the manticore boy, at least in their heads.

Regarding him idly for a moment as he renewed the challenge, she finally smiled mischievously. "Unfortunately no. She hasn't, as she wouldn't want her comapnion to be lost with anything too complex," she replied, dark eyes sparkling at the unsaid revival of his self-professed ignorance. Not to mention she wasn't entirely certain of what form of Divination the meal was conducive to, but she wasn't going to admit that. She'd come up with something eventually. The current teasing was good for now, and she knew he hadn't expected a lesson just yet.

"I don't know. I have a pretty well-developed imagination, or so I've been told," she responded lightly, and still teasingly, catching his mischievous grin. But as he applied himself to his food, she watched for a second and then did the same yet again. This was certainly proving to be a curious night.

True enough. He had been the first one to mention the list, even if he hadn't thought that, five or so minutes later, they might still be discussing said [hypothetical, and that made it all the more amusing] list. "Bringing something up isn't of much use, if it isn't picked up and pursued by others," Jared pointed out.

He might have had a good laugh, right then, if he had been able to read her thoughts and find out that she had considered, even in simple fun, the possibility of him attempting to steal her food for the sake of teasing her. As it was, he did not. "You know, that was one of the things that most appalled me about Divination, as a student," he told her, having swallowed another bite of food, as she mentioned Divination having the ability to be done at any time. "I could just imagine a seer deciding to go into a trance and have a vision, at a time when most people should be running for their lives."

Of course, his concepts about Divination had been amazingly hazy, then. Still were, in a sense, but at least he knew enough of it now not to think of advising people that excelled in the subject to stay away from dangerous jobs at all costs, since he didn't think they might enjoy being pleasantly considered for dinner by manticores and the like, during one of their trances.

"Her companion might think that sounds purposefully unflattering," he said, his attention leaving the food for the moment, as he grinned at her. It also sounded like a challenge. Though that transited to the back of his mind, at least momentarily, as Renée chose to continue the impishness of it all, and let her following remark be teasing, too. "Imagination builds on what's already there," he said, his tones carrying the same mischievous quality as hers.

As she'd waited to see what angle their teasing was going to take, it became slightly harder for Renée to not laugh. Especially as it seemed it took some thought for the simple challenge of Jared's point, and she rewarded it with a raised eyebrow before grinning. Managing to hold the laugh in. "And where would we be without situations like that?," she asked facetiously. The inference was that there would be no openings for conversation, but that seemed rather impossible. Especially when he kept surprising her with things like this dinner. And birthday presents, even though he'd never officially revealed himself as the sender. It wasn't likely to have been her family, or her editor, and given the common knowledge of their exploration of faculty files, the list had narrowed.

When he spoke about his previous studies of Divination, she paused in her meal to listen interestedly. Perhaps this would shed more light into his theory of being dreadful at the subject, but as the revelation concluded, she was unable to continue resisting the urge to laugh. "That would be a rather unfortunate end, but I can assure you that has only happened a few times in history," she replied, still highly amused. In fact, she hadn't ever thought about a situation like that, but now that it had been brought up, she was glad at least one of her students wasn't there to hear that. She knew he wasn't entirely serious though, and she imagined everyone had ridiculous ideas like that when in school. She'd had several, although she had pushed those memories back almost involuntarily when other events had occurred.

Making herself uncomfortable with her thoughts, she applied herself to finishing the last few bites of her meal before she heard him speak again, and she looked back up, finally back to her previous demeanor. At the challenge, if nothing else. "Does he truly think she'd be that cruel?," she inquired, still oddly intrigued by their moment of third-person referral. At least it was entertaining, as opposed to thinking about her mother again. She hoped he knew it was all in good fun, and his grin seemed to establish that. And as he continued, still echoing her earlier mischievousness, she relaxed and sent him another little grin. "It still has to involve a bit more creativity than realism, but sadly I have to say that's true."
