Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

To one side you'll see the entrance way, where your parents may or may not be waiting for you, and just in front of you there is the fitting area and the counter. If you aren't in need of a wand, you best just head up to the counter. If you are, then step up here to be measured and one of the Ollivanders employees will be with you shortly to fit you with a wand.

⌦ In order to receive a wand, please take the WAND QUIZ ONCE for the character who is here for a wand. Then, post your character being measured by the "magical measuring tape" ONCE in this thread. This thread is not one where you should interact with others, one post here please! It serves as our queue!

See the example post below, or look at other posts in this thread from previous terms.

⌦ Please take the SORTING QUIZ first and wait to be placed in your house before taking the wand quiz! Your house effects your final wand in our quiz! This goes for current members who are re-sorting too, though you may take the quiz in advance if you know what your new house will be.

⌦ You may role play the Magical measuring tape, but you may not role play for the shopkeepers. Ollivander does not work here!

Jessica went into Ollivanders with more than her share of nerves, it was time for her first wand! The eleven year old made her way over to the measuring area and waited for her turn. Soon enough the measuring tape reached her and began zipping about, straightening with a snap and measuring out her height and, when she held her arms out, she watched it take a measurement of how long they were too. Fun! Did that mean her wand would be as big as her whole arm?

The girl stepped away from the measuring area and she eagerly headed to the front for the shopkeeper to find her wand.

Her FIRTS WAND!

She couldn't believe it. She's going to have her FIRST WAND!!!! Alyce ran towards Ollivanders Wand Shop as soon as she saw the shop. She just couldn't wait to get her hands on that wand. She was already outside the Ollivanders and about to enter the wand shop when she realized that her auntie was far behind. "COME ON, AUNTIE! My wand is waiting for me inside!" As soon as her aunt was in reach, Alyce took her hand and dragged her inside the shop.

As she entered the shop, she's greeted by a line of people who's waiting to be measured by the magical measuring tape. She didn't mind waiting. Anything for her wand. The line was not moving as fast as she thought it will be but its finally her turn!

"Hey there, measuring tape." She gave the measuring tape a wave. Before she could even process what's going on, the tape already started measuring her height, her arms. Giggles. When she was starting to get used to the measuring tape, it stopped.

Guess now she need to find the shopkeeper. Alyce stepped away from the measuring area and waited for the shopkeeper.

Leaving her big brother - who had insisted on accompanying her inside to get her wand, not that she much minded - over by the entrance, Mairwen stepped closer to the magical measuring area, just about managing to keep her excitement from bubbling over. Refraining from nervously fiddling with the ends of her long hair, she instead smoothed down the front of her summer dress and waited patiently for the measuring tape to come to her.

Mairwen had spent her entire life around magic, so naturally the tape measure neither took her by surprise, nor was it a source of great intrigue. Still, however, she watched it get to work, at first holding out her wand arm to be measured, and then doing her best to keep as still as possible so as not to get in the way. Efficiency, Maiwen knew, was very important, and to get in the way of it was terribly poor form.

In almost no time at all, the tape measure had finished its business, and zoomed away to find the next customer. Mairwen looked eagerly towards the shop counter, finding herself tiptoeing in that direction, her excitement increasing tenfold but only made evident by the enthusiastic gleam in her eye.

"Ash and lime," the 11-year-old reminded his dad over his shoulder before he stepped into Ollivanders ALL ON HIS OWN because he had made his parents PROMISE him they would let him do this on his own. "Fat is the the best kind of wand." Of course he was a little biased and he supposed the wand types of his parents were also impressive...but NOTHING beat ash and lime.

He was certain of that for a very distinct and legitimate reason.

Bounding towards the magical measuring tape as fast as his limbs could muster. He had been looking forward to this day for YEARS now. Okay...so really it had only been about a YEAR because he had heard ALL about Jessa's wand selection experience directly from the source and then it had been wide-eyed and bushy tailed wonder ever since. Well...not entirely. He HAD sort of accidentally forgotten about wands and wandlore when he had found a book of Mermish on his dad's desk...and then there was his summer bucket list of collecting as many worm species as possible...and then there had been the family vacation to Wales...and...OKAY. So he had remembered about wands once he had been owled his Hogwarts letter so for about TWO months now he had been really really excited and focused on getting his first wand.

But not without some very very serious reservations - of which he had a list in his pocket to ask of the wandmaker. And he was going to TRY not to do it prematurely and wait until his wand match had been made.

Try being the key word.

Bouncing in place, Derf's ~~eyes~~ head followed the magical measuring tape as it went about its business...but the blonde's inability to stand still for too long thanks to his eager curiosity landed his arm tangled up in the measuring tape...just a smidgen.

This was weird. Like, really weird. Simon stood at the Measuring area totally stiff like a board. He felt the prying eyes of a Man behind him. His Adoptidad's no doubt. He inched his head slowly to his right to look behind him and yeah. There he was. His 'Father's' face pressed firmly against the glass window of Ollivander's Wand Shop.

the young boy left off an annoyed sigh slouched and pressed his thick rimmed glasses back up to hi....

SLAP. TWIST. TURN.

Di...did the measuring Tap just scold him then straighten his body back up!?
There was a quick shiver headed up his spin and a terrified lip quiver before he went back to be super stiff. To which the measuring tap then squeezed his waist and Simon loosened up a bit.

He could hear the muffled laughter from outside the window and a 'oh that's rich!' coming from his Adoptidad himself.

So embarrassing.

Turning his head towards a corner of the store to make sure his uncle has not left him alone in the shop, Nero nodded in response to the older man's signal to step up to the measuring tapes. He does so. Nervously, but eagerly. He is after all, getting his wand. Once you have a wand, you're like a certified wizard!

The tape swishes up and twirls around him. He startled. Despite being born to wizarding family, it isn't everyday he gets tangled in magical measuring tapes. Nero stood still, spreads his arms when he the tape nudges him. It then slithers down wrapping itself around his legs. This is in no way comfortable, but for the sake of getting a wand, he has to.

After a period of what he feels like forever, the tape finally slithers down to the floor towards his next customer. Finally! He massages the non-existing pain on his wrist.

Kane felt...weird without a wand. Granted, he knew he couldn't USE it until he got to school, but he felt like...naked. It was just comforting knowing that he had it on his person. Like a security blanket or something. He just wanted to get his new wand and be done with it so he could stop feeling anxious. Why did he had to be so stupid and put it in his carry on? And why did he put it in the OVERHEAD BIN?

At least Brent had been just as dumb about that.

As he walked in, he was not expecting SO MANY wands stacked up high to the ceiling. He stopped and stared in awe, his mouth agape as he let out a small "whoa," before grinning. This was WAYYY better than the rinky dink shop he'd gotten his wand in in California!

He got in line behind the other kids that he assumed were all there for the same purpose, waiting for the magical tape to make it's way towards him. That was the PROPER way to do it - the last guy had just kind of eyeballed his measurements.

He grinned as he got up to the front of the line and held out his arms, watching as they tape circled around him getting his measurements. This was so exciting!

This was so exciting. The littlest Valla was finally getting her wand. She walked through the door like every tea princess should. Holding her mother's hand of course. Her big quarter sized eyes looked through the shop. "Mamma this is a big shop. How are they going to find my wand? What if it's not here?" They had everyone wand though didn't they?

Walking to the measuring area when it was her turn she watched as the measuring tape came towards her and started to move and move. This was so fun and Zita wanted to see if her mother would buy her one so she could play with it at home. She could pretend to be a wand maker. That sounded super fun. Maybe her sisters would play with her when she was home and they would let her measure them.

You would think having so many relatives and family here it would be embarrassing. But not really since most were cool. Even Charlie. Though after this it would just be arguments over which House they would be getting into. Still confused about bragging with pride meant. Even after all the things said later. Théo went over to the measuring area to well get measure for his wand. Simple enough right. Well not really since the thing hated him for not staying still. Well excuse you. Théo was excited.

Could you blame him.

He stopped moving so much to let the tape finish whatever it was doing.

This is what Liam had been waiting eleven years for. He no longer had to admire his mum and dad's magic from afar, waiting until he actually knew how to do it himself. He was going to get his own wand. HIS WAND. The eleven-year-old was excited but like... in a calm and cool way, okay? He was cool. It was cool.

Liam's eyes traveled over the busy shop, the line of kids that he joined at the back, all the wand boxes. One of those was his. He was going to find out which one very, very soon.

... or maybe not so soon, because it felt like the line was taking forever. Except it didn't, and eventually he made it to when it was his turn at the tape measure. He stood perfectly still, chin up and arms straight out to his sides, letting the magic tape measure do it's thing. Height, arm length, wrist size, forehead width, whatever the thing needed to get him his perfect wand. He was ready. So ready.

Did he mention he was ready?

Today was a VERY VERY special day. Today was the day that Chloe Maxine Kettleburn got her very first wand. Only wand? Was it a first and only type thing? Her daddy was on his second wand, and he had a spare too, so she might be needing extra OTHER wands someday. So yeah. First wand, but not necessarily only wand.

And her mum AND dad were here. She was super duper excited AND insisted on holding both their hands, even if she was way too old for such things. "After I get a wand, I need a quill and it has to be pink and I need unicorn slippers because my other ones are too small and I need new robes and not Char's robes because I want my own and I need a cauldron. Pewter. I read it on the list."

Oh, the TAPE MEASURE!

Why wasn't this something that had been streamlined ages ago? Why hadn't someone made a fully deliverable owl service that would drop the entire school list on their stoop?

The answer was logical, of course... because children like Chloe didn't want their list to show up on the stoop. They wanted to try things on and touch thing and, Merlin help them, taste things. Children were inherently messy things. Why did they keep having them?

Once it was her turn, Regina stepped forward, back straight and arms extended outward and trying to keep as still as possible while the measuring tape flew all around her to take its measurements. Her eyes switched back and forth between following its every move and looking around the shop at all the other kids and the boxes on the shelves too. There were a LOT of both of them. Understandably so. And Regina couldn't help wondering which of these kids she might get to share a dorm with at Hogwarts.

And that led her to wondering for the billionth time about which house she'd be in. Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff like her parents, hopefully, but the other two would probably be fine too really. And anyway, what was actually important was-

Oh hey, the measuring tape was done. Now what? Just wait? She could do that!

So... this... this was it. The most pivotal moment in his young life. Or, whatever. That was just what he was told by his stepbrother.

Slate made his way over the measuring area.

His eyes widened as a tape measure pretty much attacked him. ... ... Okay. That was an exaggeration. But... it was insane. He lifted his right arm because that seemed important. Once again, the tape measure went crazy.

Magic. Was. Weird.

So what now? Was this his life now?

HIS WAND!

HE WAS GOING TO GET HIS WAND!

The excitement was practically plastered across his face. He hadn't stopped grinning ever since they'd walked into the wand shop. While this behavior was somewhat unlike him this just felt like it was the most important moment in his entire life. It was going to determine which path he was going to take.

His wand was going to be his companion for the rest of his life!

Naturally he'd already held a real wand before (without his parents knowing of course, shh) but this was going to be officially his now. And he was going to learn how to actually cast magic with it too. It was going to be A M A Z I N G! When it was his turn he stepped forward and followed the tape measure's instructions as best as he could. He wanted the wand to be perfect after all. It was going to be HIS.

FOREVER!

J.P. walked into the wand shop that his father had told him so much about. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He jumped up as he heard the measuring tape begin to do it's job. He had so many questions and couldn't wait to see what type of wand he would be paired with. The measuring tape snapped shut and zipped away to measure another new student. J.P. walked excitedly to the counter, his face beaming to see his results.

Ilvana was very thrilled to be getting her wand. It was the day she had been waiting for since getting her letter to Hogwarts. Her mum took her to go get her supplies that she would need. They had walked into the wand shop which Ilvana looked around. After giving the shop a good look, she stepped up to be measured. "Look Mum, it is measuring me" Ilvana said excitedly.

Okay. Okay. Okay. He was here. Okay. Breathe. Breeeeeathe. Heeeee hooooo heeeeeeeeeee hoooooooooo heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hooooooooooooooooo.

OKAY.

Luckily, Abey knew exactly what to expect with this bit, because he had been there when his cousins had got their own wands, actually, and he had made sure to watch. But not his siblings, 'cause they'd both already got their wands before he was even born. But yes. Cousins. It had been the same every single time and Abey was relieved to find that the process was still the same now. As soon as it was done with the last person, the tape measure ZOOMED to him and started all the measuring with him too. Abey tried his absolute best to stay still, but couldn't help but try to watch what it was doing.

"I'm 4'10"," he told it, as it checked his height. Just trying to HELP. Abey had, of course, checked it himself before coming here, using a tape measure mama had given him to play with. He had checked all those funny measurements, in case it might help give him a head start, but the height one was the only one he remembered. But still. HELPING. Sort of.

Perhaps it took a little longer than it needed to, with all the wriggling about, and maybe the tape measure seemed like it wanted to throttle him by the end of it, but then they were done! Abey looked around and took an eager step towards the front counter, after quickly making sure that Lilian and Hassan were both still nearby.

Wand?

WAND?

WAAAAAAAAND.

Christopher spared only the smallest of glances back toward his father before going right up to the counter and propping himself up onto it. In all this time, he hasn't let go of his twin sister's hand, secretly drawing on her for strength even with his outwardly, overconfident demeanor. Could he have his wand now? Did he just pick?

Play it cool Christopher? Grown up kids don't do that over-eager thing.

The little boy took a deep breath in an attempt to calm himself a little BUT HOW EXCITING WAS THIS??? HIS VERY OWN NEW WAND THAT WOULD BE HIS AND THAT HE COULD DO SO MUCH WITH!!.

He would let his Daddy teach him aaaall the best spells because his Daddy was super good at them. He could teach Demi too, but...not all of them, because then she'd know all the same spells as him and he'd have nothing to really show off about.

When his turn came, his eyes danced with intrigued as the tape zipped around him. This, of course, only made him all the more eager and OF COURSE he went first because he was older--by a whole 10 minutes.

The excitement on her brother's face starkly contrasted that of the stoicism on her own. Her stomach was doing little flips and kicks but the little girl was far better at training her expression than her twin was. In her few years on earth, she'd learned that overzealous children were greeted with overzealous adult reactions, and she wanted none of it.

Much like Christopher, she was also propped onto the counter a bit, stealing little glances at the shelves of wands that stood before her.

Any one of those could be hers and the thought of that brought some animation to her face but only for a fleeting moment before it settled back into it's usual, solemn expression.

She also spared a glance at her father. She wished he'd come to the counter with them and let her continue clinging to his hand. Why did he have to sit over there with the rest of them? THEY weren't even the ones getting their wands today. This was meant to be her and Christopher's day. THAT thought only brought the solemn expression to a somewhat sullen one. Could she have her wand now?

The tape that left her brother and moved to her was barely acknowledged.

Wand time. WAND TIME! Hazel slipped through the door having left daddy and papa and Noah outside. She'd been in here before and so coming in - FINALLY - to get her wand was all excitement and very little nerves. She looked around at the others who were waiting and bounced on the balls of her feet. She wiggled her fingers in the direction of people she recognized but did not approach or interrupt. She would see all of those people all the time at school.

School! As she moved closer to her turn, Hazel twirled a piece of hair around her finger wondering what going to classes would be like. She'd interrogated everyone she met who had been about their house and their favorite classes and what it was like to ride the train and sure, there was lots of summer left but it was coming so fast!

And the first step would be her wand. Finally stepping up to take her turn, Hazel grinned as the tape measure did its dance around her taking her measurements. Maybe she should have had at least daddy come in. This was where he had gotten his wand. She had asked him what it was like and it was hard to believe him when he described how scared and unsure he'd been. But...

Oh. The tape measure was done? Having gotten lost in her thoughts, Hazel hopped away from the measuring area and to the counter.

Ollie held his breath when he stepped into the shop. If he didn't, he would be hyperventilating and that would be a bit silly. He didn't want people to see him hyperventilating and looking nervous! He was confident!!!!

Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeathe.

Confident! His brother was cool about all of this and so would Ollie be!

The eleven year old walked ~~somewhat~~ confidently ~~kind of~~ towards the measuring area and waited for... something to happen? Was anyone going to come and-

The measuring tape springing out of nowhere just didn't give Ollie a heart attack because he knew that it was supposed to happen. Still, a little heads up would've been nice. The young boy had fun watching the tape wrap itself around his ankles, wrists, stretch along his arms and legs and dance around him in general.

He had a smile on his face by the time the tape dropped to the floor once it was finished with its duty and he looked up to see what would happen next.

So this wasn't quite as exciting as it was when he got his first wand, but Brent was still pretty pumped to get a new wand. His and Kane's had both been destroyed on the way from America, and at first, Brent had taken it s a bad sign they shouldn't even be moving in the first place. He still wasn't quite sure of this whole move across the world, but it hadn't been too bad.

He turned around to see if he could spot his little brother in the small crowd, but it was useless. He joined the line of others waiting for the measuring tape and tried to figure out something cool to do while he waited. A few hair flips later, and he was up there! Cool. The wait hadn't been that bad. He extended his arms out as far as they could go, and looked on as the measuring tape worked its magic. It zipped this way and that, taking in all sorts of info about Brent. Pretty cool. It was done in no time and finally zipped away waiting for Brent to step aside and make room for the next kid.

The fourth year moved to the side and took a quick look around. To the counter it was! He was just minutes away from his brand new wand!

After a whole two minutes of convincing (which was exactly two minutes less than she thought it would take) Zoryn was able to convince her mother to wait for her outside while she got her wand sorted out. See once she became famous, she wanted to be the one to tell the story of her first wand. And if her mother was there with her, then that's another witness that could just go and spoil it before Zoryn ever got to speak to the press. I mean, yes it was her mother... But it's Hollywood, baby! Can you really trust anyone?

Nah. Zoryn didn't think so either. So she BOUNCED into the store all by her lonesome. Wow she was so grown up. Money in her pocket. A 'FUTURE WAND OWNER' smile plastered all over her face. Man, even the AIR smelled different from this side of the world.

The only problem was that she had no idea what she was supposed to-- Oh! Look a flying measuring tape. Adulthood was RAD! Running by some of the chaos and over to the measuring, quite possibly adding to the chaos herself, Zoryn spread her arms out wide for the tape thing. "I'm five feet tall," she lied, hoping it'd get her the better wand. Of course the tape didn't listen and measured on it's own.

"Okay maybe not five feet, but my mom says that I've gotta start small so that I can have some wiggle room to grow. And I'm going to be way more than five feet tall one day because--" The measuring tape had since then moved on to taking measurements of her arms. "HEY! Are you even listening to me?"

Zoryn doubted it.

How very rude. It didn't even say the magic words or anything.

Trystanne McAndrews walked into Ollivander's and looked around. The first thing she noticed was a measuring tape that was floating around in the air, measuring several other Hogwarts students. Fascinated, she took her place at the end of the line and continued to watch as the tape measured arm length, torso length (why the tape felt compelled to measure this, Trystanne had no idea), and even the space between the nostrils. She sighed impatiently, waiting for her turn. Was it her imagination, or did the measuring tape suddenly measure a student's foot?

Too weird, thought Trystanne, realizing that she was the next person in line. She fluffed up her and plastered on her most winning smile. Soon, she would have her wand.

Until this morning, Ava hadn't entirely believed that this whole Hogwarts things was actually happening - she'd thought it must be some kind of horrible joke on her, or she'd dreamt up the whole thing. But then she'd stumbled into the wand shop - first stop - her mother hurrying to keep up with her - and realised that it was, in fact, real.

And was that measuring tape floating in mid-air?

She laughed in astonishment, then rushed to join the queue, anxious to have her turn as soon as possible. She was practically jumping up and down as she waited, beaming with excitement. Then when the weird floaty tape reached her, she forced herself to stand still for a moment. And as soon as it had finished she skipped to the counter, totally ready to be a real proper wizard now.

She. was. REALLY. getting her wand. Excited? Yes. Juniper Primeaux walked into the wand shop, She might have even been skipping in. Alone, this was the first She had waited for this moment her whole in entire life for this day.

She watched the floating measuring tape with some of the other kids first before it was her turn. She laughed as she watched the measuring tape, make her measurements. IT KIND OF TICKLED.

Ever since she had received her Hogwarts letter, Charlie's belief in fairy tales had increased exponentially.

Her life had become something she could only process happening in a story. The idea of her being a witch was not realistic to her, and yet, it was her new reality. She was currently standing in the shop where she would purchase a wand, that she'd use at her school for magic, wasn't she?

Possibly. The chance that her mind was making it all up was there.

Charlie had left her parents at the entrance of the store, walking through it to queue up for wand measurement. Although she hardly noticed, her hands gripped the sleeves of her yellow cable-knit sweater, accentuated by how her knuckles were turning quite pale. She wouldn't admit it if asked, but she was quite nervous.

She nearly jumped out of her skin when a seemingly sentient measuring tape started to whiz around her. Well, Charlie could say she'd seen just about everything now.
