| | Freelance/Gossip/Advice FREELANCERS WANTED! Are you keen to write for the premier Wizarding daily but can't commit to a regular publishing schedule? Interested in just getting your voice heard or your writing noticed on issues you care about? Are you a student, looking to build a portfolio?
Freelancing is for you!
The Daily Prophet accepts submissions from professional and amateur writers across Wizarding Britain and beyond. You can either submit something you've written on your own, or, if you're interested in writing but aren't quite sure about what you should, you can always set up a meeting with an editor and we'll find you an assignment to take on! As the Daily Prophet enters this new era in its history, it is truly becoming a paper by and for the people.
Check out some of our freelancer resources below: What is a freelancer?
In-character, freelancers are any RP'd character who wants to write an article for the Daily Prophet. They are paid per assignment and are not Prophet employees. However, the Daily Prophet has provided them with workspace should they choose to take advantage of it. Each article is evaluated on its own merits and so previous publication is not guaranteed for the future, though freelancers who consistently produce strong work may be tapped by the editor for particular assignments. They can be of ANY AGE, though student work selected for any special student sections may be paid at a lower rate.
Out-of-character, freelancers are ANY Snitchseeker member who wants to write! Members are encouraged to write articles or may be invited to write articles, without having to be part of the DP staff / DA mod team. This means more writers with fewer commitments and we can spread the opportunity around to more and more people. What if I don't have a character that would write, but I want to?
If you want to write, we will figure out how to make that work, whether we use an NPC or just don't give an IC byline credit. But we will give you OOC credit either way. What kinds of articles do freelancers write?
Any, for the most part. If you're wanting to write about something that's happening in the Ministry or at Hogwarts, best to drop an owl to the Editor first, to make sure someone isn't already working on it! Same with anything that may establish new and funky canon. Beyond that, have at it! Do you think there's this really hot new wizarding social spot that needs to be profiled? A book that absolutely must be reviewed? Your character's best friend's uncle's collection of Celestina Warbeck postage stamps from the 1990s?
You can write news pieces, feature pieces, opinion pieces, anything you want. How do I submit an article?
We will be opening a submission form soon, but in the meantime, you can PM Bazinga with the text of the article, as well as who should be credited IC for the piece of writing. If it is a report on something that was RP'd, please also provide links. What if I only have an idea and don't want to write the whole thing?
PM Bazinga. Either she'll work with you or will assign one of the journalists to be in touch. We can talk through your idea and whether you want someone else to write it or if you want to give it a try yourself. How long before my article will be posted?
This depends on a lot of things. First and foremost, we want to make sure that everything we post has been proofread and is grammatically correct. Depending, we may also need to make some tweaks for style or content. If we have to go back to you about clarifying details or for substantial edits, that'll take some time. We also may 'hold' some articles that aren't time sensitive or fit a theme, and publish them later. If that's our plan, we'll do our best to let you know. So always communicate to us if they are time sensitive in any way. OOC: That's right! ANYONE can write for the Daily Prophet and we encourage you to do so. Articles are published at the Editor's discretion but Prophet staff will work with you to get it into tip-top shape. There's no time commitment and no site responsibility attached. Just writing! (Ok, and editing).
Once you have an article you'd like to submit please submit it here. You should include what character should receive IC credit for writing the article.
If you have an article idea but don't want to write it, you can also reach out and give us ideas! |
