Not far down the hall from where the writers and editors work is the Editor-in-Chief's office. Editor-in-Chief, Basil Skeeter, prefers to keep his office a little more private and has thus removed the opaque glass walls and traded them for solid cream colored ones. Basil is usually sitting behind his desk with paperwork stacked to his left and a single pineapple placed on the edge of his desk to the right. Why a pineapple? You can try to get an answer out of him if you wish, but don't expect one. Basil is very private about certain things.

On the shelf behind Basil's desk, among all the library of books and under a clock, is a unique looking fish tank that has pygmy plimpies swiming about in it like adorable aquatic hamsters. To the left of this, over in the corner by one of the large windows that looks out onto the streets of Diagon Alley, is a sink that Basil uses whenever he enters and exits his office - and whenever one of his staffers hands in an assignment. You won't find any pygmy plimpies in here, however. Instead you will find a colorful assortment of mundane fish purchased in Muggle London.

Basil keeps his door locked at all times, so you must knock if you wish an audience with him. Have no fear, he is usually of a good disposition as long as he has a nice steaming cup of coffee in his mug.

"Yeah their egos sure were," Tori pffffff'd dramatically. Oh good, they were going. And he was leading. Good good. Tori grinned to herself and followed after him.

What did they have to discuss? "You'll be wanting to give me a raise by the end of this," she piped up cheerfully. "Just wait 'til you see my story. It'll be gold." Literally, it would bring in the galleons.

"Probably still is," he corrected. Jorge's was like a balloon that would never pop. Then again, the Department Head for MLE seemed rather sure of herself. Ug. Merlin. He was going to have to see her again.

Not looking forward to this. She was tall and terrifying.

Ignore that everyone was tall compared to him.

"Right," he said slowly as he walked towards his door, keeping his distance from the redhead so he didn't feel any smaller. Not enough stuffing in his converse for this. "Let's go then."

And out the door he went.

Mangig had eaten a handful of coffee-laced owl treats before heading out to deliver this letter, and was bouncing off the street walls (literally) as he zoomed out of the owl post office and into it's neighboring building, the Daily Prophet.

WHERE WAS THE EDITOR IN CHIEF?!?!

The small owl made a mighty mess as he sped through the work room, knocking over numerous papers and pictures off the walls that he'd crashed into on PURPOSE, leaving irate writers in his wake as he left to find the office he was looking for.

Not that one.

.... or that one.

....... THAT ONE.

Squeeeeeeeeeezing through the cracked door, he crashed unceremoniously into the desk, shook it off and then was back in the air, doing loops around the office.

There was a letter tied to his leg, for whoever could catch him.

Scrub scrub scrub....three times clockwise...and then three times counterclockwise...

It was right smack in the middle of his afternoon cleaning regime of his office that the owl had decided to grace the Daily Prophet.

"What the --" he shouted at the creature went crashing into his JUST POLISHED DESK. There...were...CLAW MARKS FROM THAT BLASTED THINGS TALONS!

The Owl Post was going to hear about this. Either from a personal visit or some bad press in the Prophet. Ollivanders was already on the hit list for poor press. Easily could turn this article into a general editorial about how standards were severely lowering these days.

Couldn't even train there bloody pigeons to deliver a letter properly.

While he was NOT going to look like a complete fool chasing the owl around the office (and he was tempted to just use his wand to hex the feathers off of it) he did eventually catch the creature by the leg long enough to remove the letter. "Be gone with you...before I roast you," he grumbled at the owl before returning to his check to check the damages. "And next time use the bloody window."

Merlin.

Opening it, because his journalistic curiosity could not be tamed, his eyes widened and a small smirk tugged at his lips. Sounded like some environmentalist hippie had written this - creatures activist by the sound of it really - and he quickly shoved it into his desk drawer and locked it. Whoever had sent that, wasn't terribly bright considering that they had used the Owl Post to deliver it. Maybe he could forgive that stupid bird now that it had given him a bit of a scoop to play with.

Now, to get to the bottom of this before that ~~terrifying~~ Emily did. Plus, he needed to give the staff at the Owl Post a piece of his mind about their owl's delivery methods.

But first...to the presses!

Jorge had been sitting at his desk distracted. He had been wanting to meet with his boss to speak to him about a few things for awhile. So much had changed since he started two years ago at this job. He had drastically changed and he had come to some major decisions in the recent month, the only piece of the puzzle was speaking to Basil about them.

Taking a deep breath he wrapped his knuckles against the door. Standing and waiting he absentmindedly played with his wedding ring. Even after three months it still felt a bit weird on his hand. Not a bad weird just he never wore rings weird. Hopefully Basil was in.

Basil was THIS close to passing out from the ink stains on his hands as he tried to scrub them clean in his sink. It was also unclear as to whether he was feeling lightheaded because he was hyperventilating or because of the ink fumes. "I thought we had that blasted thing fixed," he grumbled as he scrubbed away and heard a knock at the door.

Oh brilliant timing...whoever was on the other side of it. Maybe they could catch him like some tiny little pea sized rag doll as he fainted from all this INK?!

At least his red converse remained unstained thanks to some charms work.

"Come in!" he squeaked. The door was actually unlocked this time...because he hadn't the patience nor the thought to actually lock it after he had rushed in. BECAUSE OF THE INK ON HIS HANDS.

He had noticed the smudges, but did Basil notices his no smirk attitude about it? Something he was trying to control as of lately, was it working? "I'm not sure just a regular scrub will get that out, you might need a special cleaning potion."

Looking around he took a seat an empty chair. "Alright if you're sure" He knew how rubbish he could be at multitasking at times, so he wouldn't have been offended.

"Well as you know sir my stories are usually very opinionated. I've based my career, and have been very successful in Ronda and now here with these stories. Getting more of the truth out there, but it always comes at a cost." His safety was the biggest, which he never cared about until now. His last few curses in dark alleys were not as easy to fix.

"Anyway, I love my job and I love those stories, but not that well you know I'm married and we are thinking about extending our family I feel it's time to ease up on those type of articles. I'll still do them when needed, but I'm wanting to change my direction a bit and was hoping you'd be alright with that and that it would still be valued here." He was one of the best journalist around so he assumed writing more sports or safer articles wouldn't be a problem. Sports, meh.

What? Was Jorge inferring that since he was pea size in stature that he also had a pea sized brain and didn't KNOW that he needed a special potion?! WAS THAT A JAB AT HIS HEIGHT?! HMMMMM?

Which he did know, of course, but had clearly lost sight of logical thinking in his extended moments of panic. "Hand me the red bottle over there?" he asked while still scrubbing at his hands vigorously.

He WAS listening, by the way, just his undivided attention was on his hands and the murky water filling the sink thanks to the ink. Couldn't see his fishies because of it. Really disgusting stuff. "Do you mean attaching your name to articles? Because there are ways around that. You can come up with an alias that we can publish with your writing instead," he said, sort of not putting the full picture together yet because INK. "Unless you are saying you want to write the Bachelor of the Month column."

Part joke part serious inquiry. Although he was sure that Cameron would not appreciate Jorge taking over her precious column.

He just kind of watched not sure what to say or do for a moment, then when Basil said about getting him a red bottle Jorge looked around. Getting up he grabbed it and handed it to his boss. Wanting to make a remark about drinking early he decided the joke wouldn't be the best timing so he just sat back down.

See he can do self control pretty well.

He grew even more quiet as he thought over the editors words. He had never thought about going that route. "I was thinking about changing directions. Some of those stories, especially the one I'm writing at the moment are a bit more risky to get my information." He had been cursed a few hundred times dealing with some of these dark wizards. [b] "but that is an idea. I could still do the work, but the people wouldn't know I wrote it. Especially if it was a ministry one. I don't need Mariel's job to be in jeopardy just because I'm writing against the majority of the pathetic place. He had never been a ministry fan, everywhere he lived they were all the same.

His thoughts turned to annoyance and it showed on his face. "I don't care what I write, but I will not write about a desperate person trying to beg for a date. I'm not a gossip writer, if I was I'd go to the quibbler." He would never go that low.

"I've pushed my career since I was twenty and I've made a name for myself with my writing. I don't want that name to disappear if I change directions a bit. I still have goals of where I see myself in the future, so just because I'm starting a.. " okay so it was harder to say then he thought, still very new and weird. "a family doesn't mean I'm giving those up." He just wanted to make himself clear.

Accepting the bottle, he quickly uncorked it and used a cloth apply its contents to his hand - gently dabbing it over some of the ink stains and watching with relief as the black spots FINALLY were going away. Okay, now he could think a little more clearly now. Cleans hands, clean conscious!

Only to hear Jorge repeating himself slightly. Yes, change in directions. Had heard all that the first time despite the ink distraction. But the ~~tiny~~ man was nodding at the rest of what his employee was saying. "Right. Exactly." Basil knew what he was talking about. He had written under an alias while at Witch Weekly. Definitely did not want his name out there for the public to see. Those that needed to know knew and that was all that mattered.

"You obviously do care what you write, or else we wouldn't be having this conversation," Basil pointed out with a small grin. His hands were clean now and that made for one happy Editor-in-Chief. Maybe even a little sass thrown in there as well. Cleanliness tended to bring out that side of him. "So...you only want to write things that you can put your own name to?" Was that what the man was trying to get at?

How about Jorge just stopped beating around the bush an come clean (CLEAN!) with what specifically he was looking to do, yeah? Quick, concise, to the point. Just like Basil liked his writing.

His thoughts went to this name thing. It had its advantages, but yet it had its disadvantages too. He might still be able to do his type of stories with his family not being in danger, but to move up in his career no one would know he was writing these.

He was lost in thought so much that he wasn’t even aware of what Basil was doing anymore

Until he heard him speak again, looking up, “Well of course I do. I’m a writer, I’ve been passionate about my writing since I first decided to be one. The difference now is I actually care about someone else more.” Though he couldn’t believe the words had come out of his mouth so easily. He leaned back a bit still thinking. “I want to write, I want to get the news to people, I still want to keep furthering my career. I’ve always been a person to get what I want and I’ve always known what I want. The place has just changed. If it wasn’t for the slight issue in Ronda I’d be editor there by now. That goal hasn’t change. Now I’m not saying it’s going to be here, but I’m not saying I’m trying to leave the prophet either.” He wanted to make that clear. He knew he’d be a good editor and knew he could run a paper easily, but he knew he still had to work his way up to that so taking his name off articles would put a road block in that.

“I don’t mind putting my name off some, if it means getting the truth out, but I want to make sure I have enough of my own to keep up with my career goals as well.” Did that make sense?

Probably not the best choice of words, there, Jorge. Mentioning being an editor had it not been for Y and all that. The journalist was clearly all worked up over something, or more awkward than Basil, because he was going all over the place with his trains of thought and logic. Basil would cut the man some slack though, it was mildly amusing AND he had given him his special cleaning formula when asked.

Basil capped his red bobble and walked back over to his desk to drop it off there. Cleans hands.... mmmmhmmmmm.

"Right, well, in case you want to seriously consider the pseudonym name," he said as he reached over his desk and into one of the top drawers for some paperwork. "Here is the necessary literature to read and the second page is a form to fill out should you choose to go through with it." Up to him, but he wanted to make sure Jorge knew what all this meant before committing either way. Basil didn't really mind either way. He could always put a different journalist in the place Jorge was vacating.

Some. Interesting choice of words.

"A pseudonym wouldn't stop that from happening," Basil replied with a shrug. Pity Jorge didn't have the...talent Basil did. Came in quite handy when one did not want to stick your neck out.

"This change of direction, what exactly do you have in mind?" He hadn't specifically said and what was would depend on how Basil responded. If there were any vacant positions and if he could shuffle employees around.

Sitting there he wasn’t one to be off his element even though he was at that moment. He strived through life with the best stories, the most dangerous and possibly trouble making stories. The threat on his family in Ronda leading him to leave and seek employment elsewhere had never been that big of a deal to him. His family was fine and his path to London and the Prophet had seemed a good one, but to think of Mariel and any future children in a position like that was enough to make him off his element and need for seeking advice from his boss. Though he didn’t feel he was getting the mentoring advice he thought he’d get from someone in Basil’s position. Should he have known he wouldn’t? The man seemed a bit off normally as it was.

He just watched as he grabbed some paperwork and handing it over. Jorge glanced at it, but still wasn’t sure. He wasn’t afraid of trouble or anyone coming at him about his stories and it just seemed like taking on a fake name was a way of hiding. He always thought if you couldn’t take the backlash from your own stories you shouldn’t be journalist and you should go off to do something a little more cowardly, so that was not something he was going to decide on lightly. “Thank you, I’ll keep it in mind.”

This is where his thoughts started molding together, “I’m great at what I do and I can easily get everything I want with my stories.” Give or take a few hexes and curses for this last piece he had been working on for awhile now. “My wife is the department head of the sports department, I could help with some of that. I already have an exclusive with a player that never does interviews.” Not that he wanted to do sports, he wasn’t that into them. “but maybe it wouldn’t have to stop there, we tell each other everything, I could probably get myself into the ministry easily be a go to for stories.” Good or bad, just because he wanted to do something different didn’t mean he was going to be nice to the ministry and their ways. “ I could do some more community events and things like that. “ As he finished explaining Jorge sat back a bit more confident and his normal smirk on his face. The ministry piece really just came to him, but that could be an opportunity within itself. Plus now saying the words aloud there were so many things he could do to keep moving up in his career. Two years and a half years at the Prophet and he had showed his worth and his talents, so changing it up a bit shouldn’t make a difference.

Basil just gave a nod to signal 'you're welcome.' He had all the paperwork now, so taking that route was entirely up to him. Already had a few pseudonym writings on staff, so one more wouldn't hurt anything.

Hands clean and paperwork handed over, Basil decided to relax into the his seat as his desk to help unwind from the high intensity that had been a few minutes ago because of INK. He gestured towards the seat across from him should Jorge wish to sit.

"You certainly do your job," he concurred with a faint smile. Minus a few hiccups here and there, but that was the case with everyone. He listened intently as his employee went on to explain concepts in further detail, nodding at all the appropriate places and scribbling down a few things on a piece of parchment on his desk. "Are you saying you would like to step in as a Ministry liaison?" They did have a vacant position on the Prophet now for the title. Of course it wasn't just a title that limited one to the affairs of the Ministry, but a vacant position nonetheless. "Seems like hitting two fwoopers with one stone from the way you are talking, really."

Easily accomplished too. Just needed a signature on a new contract and all set.

Certainly did his job, meh was he trying to say that Jorge was just as average as the rest, because he certainly knew he could write circles around most of the staff. He got along with most of them, especially Tori, but he knew he was one step ahead when it came to his writing then the majority of them. Maybe one or two was at his level, but that was it.

Moving on, he looked at the papers in his hand again and then looked up to listen to his boss. Thinking over the question. Was he really saying that? It wasn’t what he had come in for that was for sure, but it could work to his benefit. “I wouldn’t say I’m not perfect for the job. I mean my wife being a department head. Though if I have to play nice with Emily Browne that could be an issue.” He wasn’t sure how much he could play nice with any of the MLE.

Rubbing his chin he thought for awhile about this. “It really would be. Why not.” He shrugged as he looked at Basil. “I could certainly do the job well.” He was very confident that he could be the best liaison, because he was great at anything he did.

Basil raised an eyebrow at the silence and had to bite his tongue from making some sort of sarcastic comment to cut the silence hanging in the air. Jorge needed to take the compliment and not look so grumpy about it. Merlin.

Right. Exactly why Basil was asking - save for the Browne bit. Basil was ~~terrified~~ not enthusiastic about her either. "I'm mostly looking for someone who can communicate between the Prophet and the Minister," he replied. If that meant using his wife for tips and inside information, then Basil was all for it. "I caught wind myself of a few things brewing over there in the Ministry and I want to make sure we don't miss anything." And Basil couldn't afford to use all of his time out of the office literally buzzing about the Ministry.

Basil still found himself perplexed by the nature of this visit and did not enjoy playing guessing games when he had things to accomplish. He understood the whole new direction for Jorge's writing, but was that all the journalist had come here to talk about or was there something more?

"Is that...all then? No more dangerous stories and focus on....quidditch and Ministry affairs?"

“That I can do.” If he didn’t have to go toward MLE it would probably make things easier, though it wasn’t dangerous to be nosy in their area, that was something he might be able to keep. Just no more knockturn alley run ins. He had too many curses and hexes for Mariel’s liking. He would have never even tried to place the change in his mind if it wasn’t for the baby talk.

Listening he nodded, “I hear of quite a bit of things, so I think it would be certainly a great step in the right direction for my career.” Having a department head did come with some perks. Not that he’d use her to get his stories, but it was an easy link for communication. “I can give you my word that we will not miss a thing that goes on over there.” His confident smirk sat on his lips. He was good at his job and Basil knew that, or at least he should. He had always gotten his stories no matter the cost. So an easy thing like keeping up with the ministry would be a walk in the park.

He swallowed hard at the no more, “For now, I write what jumps at me, but while Mariel and I are going to start extending our family or at least hoping too, I think this is a great direction for my career to go in.” Did he have to do any paper work for the ministry thing or could he just head out and start getting stories in that he already was working on?

Basil simply nodded along, side eyeing the pineapple on his desk every now and then for no particular reason. "Well then that settles things," he said as he stood up to go wash his hands again. "I'll have a new contract on your desk by tomorrow morning. Just sign it and slip it in the drop box on my door if I'm not in."

Which he very well may not be. Certain occurrences happening elsewhere that needed his specific skill set.

"And congratulations on, um, trying," he said over his shoulder as the water began to pour out of the faucet. "Nothing quite like holding one for the first time and seeing them look up at you."

Hopefully Jorge would have better luck with family life. Hard to tell from what Basil observed from the workplace with out it would go for him.

That was easy enough. Jorge was now on a new direction. He felt the news would let Mariel rest a bit easier not worrying as much and if he were to speak to the Minister more regularly he'd maybe get to visit her as well. Added bonus in his eyes. "Thank you" He nodded at the paperwork being on his desk. "I'll get it signed as soon as I see it so that it's all done and out of the way."

Getting up out of his chair there was no reason to stick around, so he was about to say thank you again and make his exit when Basil spoke again. Oh well, yes it was a nice thing to say though he hadn't hear anyone saying it that way before. They needed the luck after last time, "Thank you sir" not that he'd get into that.

Looking down at them, he remembered his nieces the first time holding them. Would it be anything like that he wondered and then another thought crossed his mine. "You have children, don't you?" He wasn't one to get involved in others lives especially if it wasn't for a good story, but he had heard that somewhere.

Business adjourned, Basil returned his attention to washing his hands, only to hear that apparently Jorge had more to say. Or ask rather. About his personal life.

It as his own fault, bringing up newborns and all that. Not that it had been an invitation to start discussing them or anything. And Basil was certainly not about to help his employee and wife pick out nursery curtains or anything of that sort.

"I do. Three girls," he said, his hands paused on the faucets for a brief moment before twisting them both off. "Youngest off to Hogwarts this year." He reached down and grabbed the hand towel to dry his hands.

Business adjourned, Basil returned his attention to washing his hands, only to hear that apparently Jorge had more to say. Or ask rather. About his personal life.

It as his own fault, bringing up newborns and all that. Not that it had been an invitation to start discussing them or anything. And Basil was certainly not about to help his employee and wife pick out nursery curtains or anything of that sort.

"I do. Three girls," he said, his hands paused on the faucets for a brief moment before twisting them both off. "Youngest off to Hogwarts this year." He reached down and grabbed the hand towel to dry his hands.

He had heard some rumors, but he wasn't sure. When Basil said he had three, he was taken by surprise. He wasn't aware there were three. He thought maybe one, but three?

"Three girls, wow, that must be interesting." He knew Basil wasn't married, but he didn't have a clue of anything else. "Hogwarts?" Was the man nuts for letting his children go there? No way will any child of his go to that ridiculous school.

Getting up he got ready to head out. "Well I hope she has good sense about her so nothing bad happens with all the crazy that seems to go on there." With that he turned, "Thanks Basil" and shut the door behind him.

Interesting. Sure, that was a word one could use he supposed. Would be more interesting if he actually had some sort of relationship with them, but it as what it was.

As for Hogwarts, it wasn't exactly his decision...but he didn't fancy the option of shipping them out of the country to one of the other wizarding schools of enforcing homeschooling on them. The girls wanted social lives and to interact with others their age - or so he had heard - and Hogwarts was what they wanted.

He chuckled under his breath at Jorge's departing words. Basil hoped all three of them did, but especially the youngest. She always saw the good in everyone - even those that didn't deserve it.

"Welcome," he replied as an afterthought just before the door shut. Once he was sure that he was completely alone, the Editor-in-Chief returned to his desk and used his wand to unlock the middle drawer on one of the side to pull out an old family photo. The last one taken before the divorce.

Leaning back in his seat, allowing the chair to squeak a little (it could use some oil and fine tuning) he uncharacteristically traced the outline of the people in it and sighed. Bad things had already happened to the girls. Nothing that school could throw at them could be any worse.

Shoving the picture back in his desk drawer, Basil pulled out another folder of parchment and dove right back into his work.

Sneaking that bite, he paused halfway through chewing to look around the office they entered. It was nice. Clean even. And...way more fancier looking than his disheveled back room filled with wood shavings and old boxes. Wait, was that... A FISH TANK!? Holy mother of fancy fishes, he wanted one.

"Nice office." Want.
