Default DADA: The Knockback Jinx

It’s a crisp Monday morning in January. The hour was rapidly approaching for today’s Defence lesson to begin which was why the moment you step into the classroom, you find Professor Khanna ready to greet you in their usual friendly manner. They could be found leaning against their desk meticulously wiping the lens and frame of the new pair of sunglasses they had been gifted the previous Christmas.

The classroom itself was not arranged in any particular manner: there were the same neat rows of desks and chairs; the comforting warmth, which Dhruv was a step up from the chilly corridors beyond the classroom’s walls, was present. There were no indications of today’s lesson’s topic but the students would only be kept in the dark for a short while.

“Have a seat, get your writing materials and books ready but don’t get too comfortable. The latter part of the lesson will require us to head elsewhere.”

Lesson Progression:

OOC: Dearest gentle, RPers! Welcome to our OOC lesson! A few reminders: this is NOT the first IC lesson to be held for the term so do remember to RP accordingly; please be mindful of the lesson rules & expectations as well as the Site rules. The lesson will commence in about 30 hours. THE LESSON HAS STARTED!

Kion had arrived, thinking fondly of his winter break. Seeing his parents again, spending time with Maria and her family. It was a pure and fun tradition, though he couldn't help the feeling of knowing it was his last winter break from Hogwarts... But that thought can wait.

"Hello, Professor," Kion greeted. "Nice sunglasses," Smiling kindly before heading to take a seat. So they were going to be moving later on. That was exciting to hear. He took out his notebook, quill, and textbook out of his bag before the lesson could begin.

Bryony had easily returned to the swing of things up on returning to Hogwarts after winter break. However, that didn't mean the newly turned fourteen year old wasn't still buzzing with the excitement of the past holidays. Her spirits were at a clear high as she skipped into the room and took in the usual surrounding as she normally did.

"Hello, Professor," Bry chirpped happily, wiggling her fingers at Professor Khanna in greeting. "Oooh, are we going on a mini field trip?" That sounded exciting! Chosing a seat somewhere in the middle, Bry sat down and began to take out her things, waving at Kion as she did. How was she so early today?!

Getting back into school mode after winter break was always a challenge for this Hufflepuffer. It wasn't anything personal, but just being off classes for a couple weeks, not to mention it being a Monday, was difficult. At least the Defense class wasn't a far walk from the Hufflepuff Common Room.

"Morning Professor..." That was when the older Gryffindor boy mentioned sunglasses and she took them in, along with what Bry said .. "Wait, are we going to the beach?" Like why else would he have sunglasses? Although she had heard of them being useful in protecting against glare from the snow. But they were inside.

First to arrive was one soon-to-be graduate, a graduate that Dhruv would miss having in their classes. They comforted themself with the mental reminder that a graduating batch meant an incoming bunch for firsties. “Mr. Ingebretson, hello. Thank you. They were a gift.” A rather thoughtful one too. With Kion on his way, the professor turned to greet the next student.

SPOILER!!: Bryony!

Next came Bryony with Aryan close behind. Their friendship was restored and there was a new development to it, as was confirmed by Aditya. Dhruv couldn’t say he wasn’t happy for the pair. “Hello,’’ they responded while wiggling a few phalanges on his hands back. “Oh yes, Ms. Paton. You can say that but I will spill no details just yet.”

SPOILER!!: Emma!

Like why else would he have sunglasses? Although she had heard of them being useful in protecting against glare from the snow. But they were inside.

Getting back into the groove of schoolwork was understandable. Even though they happened to be a professor, Dhruv still found it trying to get back into a school term after a particularly good holiday break. “Good morning, Ms. Montmorency,’’ they replied cheerfully. “Sorry to disappoint but not today. I’ll make a mental note for a trip there in a future lesson.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

It was now ten AM on the dot and Dhruv, being a human who respected everyone’s time, checked the third floor corridor for any stragglers. Finding none, the door to the classroom was closed with a firm SNAP! “Welcome to yet another DADA lesson! Today we will be focusing on a spell that can prove useful in certain situations.” They moved to the front of the classroom, leaning against their desk. “Something that I like to remind my students is that despite the usefulness of defensive spells, the spell chosen should depend on the situation and who or what you’re defending yourself against. For example, let’s say an injured crup is barking ferociously at you but you notice that the creature is bleeding from an injury. That said painful injury is causing it to lash out on the first person it sees. You wouldn’t or shouldn’t want to use any defensive spells that would cause it further harm. After all, it is simply barking at you.” Dhruv clipped the sunglasses to their shirt by one of its temples. “Keep this in mind as it will be crucial to today’s main activity.” Fun fact: they had once been chased by a Komodo Dragon but had chosen to seek refuge in a tree instead of hurting it. Ah, the tales they could relay because of their years at the Ministry!

The professor cast their gaze around the classroom then delved into the first question. “Hypothetically speaking, you’re about to be attacked by a Mountain Troll which is one of the most vicious types of Trolls you can come across. Its intent is to seriously maim you. What defense would you use and why? Keep in mind that defending yourself does not necessarily mean the use of magic.”

OOC: Hi! Thank you for posting! <3 The lesson officially commences now. Look out for the mini activity in 24 hours.

Maria sat next to Kion, holding hand's in the DADA classroom for warmth. It was certainly brisk in the school halls this time of year, brr. Having Kion spend winter break with her and her family had been wonderful even though her dad's as usual had been a bit embrassasing at times, but they meant no harm. Her dad's liked Kion a lot just like she did.

Focus and attention turning to Professor Khanna as the lesson began Maria raised her hand to say the first defensivs spell's that came to mind. "Protego, is a useful selfprotecting spell. Also Locomotor Mortis would be helpful to bind the troll's leg so you could have time to run away to a safer place." This was hypothetically speaking, but they hadn't got many facts, where they alone facing the troll? Where they backed into a corner? So many questions.

Kion nodded, hearing how they were a gift. Usually, Professor Khanna wore the same type of sunglasses. The noticeable change seemed to fit him well for the Professor, whoever got it for him showed a lot of care. It reminded him of all the cool gifts Maria got him.

Kion's hand occasionally squeezed Maria's gently in support. Also when hearing her answer, he thought it was a great answer. He rose his hand eventually to add, "I would look at my surroundings. See if I could also use a levitating charm on a rock or object to distract it. Maybe even make it larger with Engorgio to hide behind or give the troll an extra obstacle while heading for safety, " It took a lot of strength to take on a troll by oneself.

In retrospect it was actually probably a good thing they weren't field tripping to the beach. Unless it meant leaving the country too, which likely would have required far more paperwork than Khanna was prepared for. Hearing Professor Khanna's introductory spiel had Emma curious about today's activity. Would they be working more on empathy for injured creatures then?

But the question posed was unrelated, wasn't it? "I once read something that if a bear is chasing you and another person in a forest, that you only need to outrun the other person. So I suppose one defensive strategy against a mountain troll would be that you have to be able to outrun it." Khanna did say defense didn't necessarily require use of magic.

It was the happiest day when this small blonde had finally patched things up with Aryan and the two of them were now stronger than ever. She was also making leaps and bounds in progress still with how she handling things with Drake and this showed in how she did her best to include him in nearly all the things. Everything was a work in progress, much like how she was working hard to get herself to where she should be again with all her studies.

"I'll take that answer as a yes!" Bry giggled, excitedly swinging her legs beneath her desk. This was going to be so much fun! The guys were excited too, yes?

As the listen was starting, Bry listened closely, her eyes taking on a hint of sadness. All she could think about was Beans hurting himself and being scared! It was complete sense for a injured crup to bark if their scared and hurt. She didn't want to think about it though. So thankfully they were moving on and talking about how they could get away from a mountain troll if attacked by one. Slowly she raised her hand. "You can disillusion yourself so the mountain troll won't be able to see you and then you can run away." It might not be the best or most practical option but it was an option.

There weren’t many facts because there didn’t need to be. It all boiled down to the situation with the students being ‘attacked’ by the Mountain Troll and Dhruv wanted to know what tactic would be used for protection. They nodded thoughtfully. “Excellent choices, Ms. Dolph. Both spells will indeed buy you some time that could see you making an escape.” The professor’s gaze lingered on Maria’s and Kion’s hands before nodding to the Gryffindor. “Brilliantly thought out,’’ they remarked, quite pleased with the creativity of the answer. Now listen. Dhruv loved love as much as the next open minded person but there was a time and place for everything. To subtly let the lovers know, they casually moved to their desks. “Hand holding can be done after the lesson, I think.” The words were said quietly and a slight smirk.

Next, they called upon Emma. It was obvious that she had listened quite well to their words. Dhruv nodded, a smile spreading on their face. “Quite right you are. Trolls are notoriously slow due to their size and weight. Running from them is smart.”

SPOILER!!: Bryony!

It was always sad when a pet, or any animal for that matter, was hurt. They were a part of one’s family after all, so Dhruv completely understood why the youngest Paton. “Indeed one can do that. One just has to ensure they are quiet because the Charm will not mask noises which the Troll can follow.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Dhruv returned to the front of the classroom, making some movements with his dominant hand so that the topic appeared on the whiteboard at the side of their desk in bold letters. “Today, our focus will be upon the Knockback Jinx. Before we proceed with further discussion on this jinx, I want you to take a moment to practice the incantation and wand movement, not necessarily in that order. The incantation is Flipendo. Fli-PEN-doh.” As they spoke, the word appeared on the board. “The wand movement is simple: a small check mark with a hook at the end.” A few demonstrations were done as the remainder of notes appeared magically:

Quote:
THE KNOCKBACK JINX
Incantation: Flipendo {Fli-PEN-doh}
Wand Movement: A small check mark with a hook at the end

“Go ahead, get started on your practice. Feel free to ask me, or an older student, for any assistance you may need.”

OOC: This mini activity will last for three days {until Saturday 22nd June at 11 PM EST} but I will be posting Dhruv to interact with your kiddos in the meanwhile. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions about the lesson.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon had been quiet for the lesson so far, but he was listening and taking notes, and he nodded appreciatively when Professor Khanna mentioned that defense didn't necessarily mean having to hurt a creature or another person. Brandon could certainly get behind that... he hated hurting people, ok. Personally, he wished he could apparate out of a situation like that, but really disillusionment (like Bryony had mentioned) and running away (like the other students had mentioned) was the best he could do so far. He wrote a long, detailed paragraph about his thoughts in his notebook, and got more and more interested in the hypothetical scenario and what he would do. (Brandon was a nerd, okay.)

Brandon already knew how to say Fli-PEN-doh, so he didn't bother with practicing that too much. He was more interested in trying to do it nonverbally later. However, he supposed that a little bit of practice wouldn't hurt... "Fli-PEN-doh. Flipendo." Yup, he knew how to say it. Then, he practiced the wand movement a few times: a small check mark with a hook. But he made sure not to concentrate on it too hard, worried that he might accidentally cast it for real- which he most definitely did NOT want to do. That would probably put other people in danger, and Brandon hated the idea of that.

When Professor Khanna came over to their desk's, and told her, and Kion to stop holding hand's Maria gave Kion a quick glance before feeling her face warm up like light bulb with rosy pink embrrassment. Quickly withdrawing her hand from Kion's she mumbled in response to their professor eyes downcast. "Sorry Professor Khanna. We will of course stop, and keep our full focus on the lesson. I promise!"

To do just what she promised Maria wrote down notes of her other peer's answers to the troll question. She was a good student. Hopefully not too many of her peers saw her flushed face as she watched the flipendo demonstration. The incantation was easy enough, it was the wand movement that could potentially be a bit tricky with the hook at the end.

When it was time to practice she started practicing the incantation first. "Fli-PEN-doh, Fli-PEN-doh, Fli-PEN-doh." several times to make sure she memorized it well enough to cast it. Then she practiced the wand movement 5 times trying to get the right movement with the small check mark, and hook at the end to become a fluid motion. First attempts felt bad, but they got better by the end of the practice session. She didn't risk stealing a glance at Kion's practicing or ask him for help since she didn't want to get either of them in more trouble.

There was no proper excuse for Kion holding his girlfriend's hand during a lecture. It was something he momentarily forgot, so he took the warning seriously as he felt warm. "Sorry, Professor. It won't happen again." He then gave Maria an apologetic smile for her getting in trouble too. At least they were both right with their answers, which likely saved them from losing points.

Flipendo. It was a cute spell. It reminded him of some muggle item. Niptendo or something like that. Though the receiver of the spell wouldn't find it as cute. He repeated, "Flipendo" enough times before he practiced the check wand movement. Easy peasy. He checked around the room, seeing the younger student (Bryony, was it?) who waved at him earlier. Giving her a friendly acknowledgment incase she or anyone else needed help. And then he saw Maria, he didn't want to risk breaking her concentration, so he simply smiled and continued practicing.

Incredibly sad. Bry knew creature injuries were inevitable at times especially when one owned them, worked with them or just was always around them. She was very thankful they wouldn't be dealing with any injured creatures today, so thank you professor!

Nod nod. Yes, making sure to be super quiet while disillusioned was very important. The third wrote this down in her notes along with the responses her fellow classmates gave. Speaking of which, she did notice Kion acknowledging her and smiled. It always felt good to be noticed. Not that is was easy to miss the loud child that she typically was on a daily basis.

However now was not the time for loudness or making herself noticeable. As much as she might want to make sure a certain someone was ALWAYS noticing her. The lesson was moving on and she really needed to pay attention. The information for the knock back jinx was written neatly down in her notes. Next she moved on to reciting the incantation. "Fli-PEN-doh, Fli-PEN-doh." Flipendo. Over and over again. It honestly wasn't all that difficult compared to others.

The wand movement was fairly easy too. A checkmark with a little hook at the end. It was kinda cute really. So wand in hand, Bry gave it a go a few times until it was one simply fluid motion of her wand.

SPOILER!!: Brandon!

Dhruv kept casting his gaze casually in Brandon’s direction since the Hufflepuff had been silent all along. He was okay, wasn’t he? Nothing was bothering him? He just felt like being silent? Whatever the case, the student knew that Dhruv was always willing to lend an ear, and even to read what had been written in that book.

In the midst of all the murmurs and wands moving about as practise continued, they approached Brandon’s desk. “I see that you’re ready to actually try the spell out,’’ the professor remarked. “Wonderful enunciation, by the way.”

SPOILER!!: Maria & Kion!

The only way the pair would have lost points was if the warning had been ignored so neither needed to worry. “That’s alright.” The smirk turned into a smile of appreciation for the students’ compliance. They were quite welcome to look at each other though, just not to make heart eyes or anything like that.

Having made their way around the classroom, Dhruv was now back at Maria’s and Kion’s desk. “How’s practise going along here? Any difficulties?” They doubted there were any because both were capable students but as a professor, Dhruv wanted to ensure things were moving along smoothly.

SPOILER!!: Bryony!

As much as Dhruv tried to keep track of all the students during their practise, they couldn’t help but focus a tad more on the younger students. One of them happened to be Bryony. “That’s some proper pronunciation, Ms. Paton. Nice wand work as usual.” Hady must be so proud that her littlest girl was this diligent.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon always looked a bit haunted, as though something was perpetually bothering him- and he looked like that today. Whether he was more or less haunted-looking was debatable, but in any case, he felt like his classmates' answers had been sufficient to explain how he felt.

He fidgeted with his wand a little when Professor Khanna said that he seemed ready to try the spell. "Theoretically, I guess. I want to try it nonverbally. But... we'll see." He ruffled his hair, feeling troubled. Were they going to be using the dummies again? Despite their usefulness, Brandon felt a strong aversion to practicing any spellwork on human-shaped things. He usually ended up starting to imagine the dummy as someone he either really liked or really despised, and both scenarios made him deeply uncomfortable. Flipendo was okay, though... probably. It wasn't particularly lethal or cruel, so if anything, practicing flipendo was good because then he wouldn't need to rely on 'worse' spells. He tried to think of it that way.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was a class Sydney enjoyed. It combined two of her favorite things: dark scary creatures and destructive chaotic spells! As such, she was in a pretty good mood as she arrived on time, though it didn’t show in her stoic expression. She’d greeted Professor Khanna upon her arrival and quickly taken her seat afterward. She examined the room layout for clues to the lesson subject but saw none. While the nondescript layout provided no clues, the professor’s instructions did. Going somewhere else? Interesting… would there be a scary creature waiting for them in the other location? Fun!

Before she had time to dwell on that possibility, the lesson started. Sydney was only half listening to the professor’s intro. Despite her penchant for darkness and chaos, she wouldn’t seriously harm anything that didn’t understand what it was doing, like the injured crup in question. Where was the fun in that? She considered the hypothetical scenario carefully. Honestly, if she encountered a mountain troll, it was a toss up whether she’d attack it or try to train it to do her bidding. Either way, she supposed she’d need to subdue it first.

Her first instinct was to knock the troll out, either with a spell or with its own club. If she was going to use defensive magic, she’d go all out with it! Somehow she had a feeling that that answer was a little more… brutal than the professor would want, so she came up with a plan B. If she wasn’t going to knock the troll out, she’d have to find some other way to immobilize it. Immobulus? Or would Petrificus Totalus be more effective? She raised her hand and said, “I’d immobilize the troll to buy myself time to get away, though would Immobulus or Petrificus Totalus work better?”

Sydney listened intently as Professor Khanna moved on. Ooh, the Knockback Jinx! Think of all the chaos one could cause with that spell! She imagined an unsuspecting person walking down a corridor, then - BAM! Knockback Jinx! The thought made her smile ever so slightly.

She couldn’t wait to try this spell out! After copying down the spell information, she set straight to work practicing. Wand held tightly in her right hand, she carefully made the check mark with hooked end movement. Check mark and hook at the end, check mark and hook… After a few tries, she switched her wand to her left hand and practiced the wand movement a few more times.

After a while, she moved on to the incantation. “Fli-PEN-doh,” she said, taking care to enunciate each syllable clearly. When she tried the spell for real, she wanted it to work the first time! “Fli-PEN-doh, Flipendo, Flipendo…”

“We’ll see indeed,’’ Dhruv replied with a nod. Brandon need not worry, in their opinion. Even if the practical did not go as planned, there was time to practise before the end of term exams in order to master the spell. As for the lesson involving dummies, this one didn’t. Not technically. The good thing was, the props involved already had faces to them!

Dhruv might have missed that tiny smile but they did sense some level of enthusiasm emanating from Sydney. Enthusiasm was good because it could drive one’s determination to master a spell. “You’re on the right track, Ms. Masters.” She was given a well deserved thumbs up.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

“Before we move onto the main activity, there’s just one other aspect of the Knockback Jinx that needs to be covered.” The professor returned from among the students to lean against their desk once more. “Its variations. There are three: Flipendo Duo, Flipendo Tria and Flipendo Maxima.” This new information magically appeared on the whiteboard. “Each variation is more powerful than the original, and each is more powerful than the other. That is to say Flipendo Duo is stronger than Flipendo, Flipendo Tria is stronger than Flipendo Duo and Flipendo Maxima is stronger than Flipendo Tria. Targets will be knocked backwards with greater force, depending on the variation chosen.” There was a brief pause which Dhruv hoped the students would continue to make their notes. “In addition, each produces a flash of light: blue, purple, white, red, yellow or orange. None of these colours are assigned to any particular incantation so don’t think too much of you cast Flipendo Duo and you get white light, which you had gotten when you used Flipendo. The various colours are not an indication of poor spell performance or that you've cast the wrong spell.” Dhruv knew that some students tend to overthink each detail involving spellwork so they wished to put any overthinker at ease.

“Earlier, I gave you my own hypothetical scenario. This time around, I’d like you to tell me about a situation where you think that one of the three variations would be the most logical to use.”

OOC: Hiya! The main activity will get started in 24 hours!

Back to the lesson, right blinking up at Professor Khanna she said thoughtfully. "The practicing is going good professor Khanna. The only tricky bit was the hook in the wand movement, but I think I have figured it out. Thank's for asking..." Yes, politeness was good.

The lesson moved on and after some extra spell info on flipendo's variations in strength and colour. She mulled on the next question for a bit. Raising her hand eventually and a bit tentatively she offered. "If we could still use the troll in our scenario then I think using flipendo maxima to knock the attacking troll backwards would be a good spell to get myself time to flee or find somewhere to hide from it."

Sydney acknowledged Professor Khanna's thumbs up with a polite nod. Although her expression remained as stoic as ever, she couldn't help but feel a bit pleased with herself for the praise she received. Not wanting to break her momentum, she kept practicing, alternating between the wand movement and the incantation until time ran out.

Refocusing her attention on the professor, Sydney listened semi-intently. She liked that there were stronger variations of the spell (she couldn't wait to see what happened when she tried Flipendo Maxima!), but what really interested her was the light colors. Why were there six options? Most of the spells she'd heard of only had one or two. And if the color wasn't assigned by incantation, how were they assigned? Was it random? Based on the carter's will? A theory formed in her mind. What if the light colors were determined by intent? Like, maybe using the spell to attack would produce red light, and using it to protect would produce white? And using it for pure, unbiased chaos… maybe orange?

Sydney was so engrossed in her hypothesis that she almost missed the next question. Her thoughts immediately turned to Flipendo Maxima, the strongest variation possible. She'd likely use that if something particularly large or dangerous was after her… assuming she didn't try to tame it. But that answer sounded a lot like the other student's (Maria).

Thinking again, Sydney took her answer in the opposite direction. She raised her hand and said, ”Of the three variations, I'd most likely use Flipendo Duo if I needed to knock someone away from danger to protect them. For example, if my sister was about to touch a venomous tentacula.” Which low-key sounded like something either of her sisters might do! ”You need the spell to be strong enough to push them back, but you don't want to hurt them either.”

Being called smart for mentioning the outrunning thing was a great boost in Emma's confidence. Even if when responding, she hadn't been thinking of how notoriously slow trolls were. It seemed they'd be practicing the knockback jinx though, which actually seemed as it would be a fairly useful spell in one's arsenal of offensive spells. It would be enough to delay the target through alarm, but not cause serious harm.

The third year hufflepuff found herself tracing a checkmark in the air, since wand movements seemed rather tricky and she wondered if forgetting the hook would impact its effectiveness?

"Flip-pend-dough" she said in rehearsal of the incantation, unaware she emphasized on several letters twice. That was when Khanna posed another scenario, asking about when maybe they'd be logical to use. Did it look like she was a Ravenclaw who used logic? Sure she had some logic in her, but it wasn't her primary strength.

Maria used the previous example of the troll which actually was pretty logical since it was already mentioned so likely a simulator would involve that in the later part of the lesson. "I'd ... perhaps Flipendo Maxima would be useful against dark wizards or creatures. It would be enough to maybe catch whatever off guard, but not harm."

Dhruv was significantly pleased to know that Maria had worked out the ‘hook’ aspect of the wand movement. She was such a diligent student, as was proven in her response. “The strongest variation in this scenario would be beneficial. As we know, many times magic may require a little extra effort to work on trolls due to their thick skin."

The professor pointed to Sydney next and definitely could not hold back a chuckle at her response. “A very good example because siblings can definitely be inquisitive in that manner. Using that mild variation will definitely ensure your sister learns her lesson without causing any harm to her or the Tentacula.”

"I'd ... perhaps Flipendo Maxima would be useful against dark wizards or creatures. It would be enough to maybe catch whatever off guard, but not harm."

“Not quite, Ms. Montmorency,’’ Dhruv remarked kindly as they approached her desk. “Fli-PEN-doh. If you listen carefully, there is only one ‘p’ and one ‘d’. Flipendo.” If they pronounced it her way, they would have ‘Flippenddo.”

The professor could think of another reason to want to use the strongest variation: Dark Wizards knew some rather terrifying dark magic and were not afraid to use it. That alone would motivate a lot of regular witches and wizards to want to defeat the evil wizards as quickly as possible. “Catch them while they’re down or distracted,’’ Dhruv mused. “An excellent strategy.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

“Now for the exciting aspect of today’s lesson!” Dhruv grinned around at the class because they thought that they had a rather mind stimulating activity. “If you will all put your belongings back into your bags. We’ll be only needing our wands today.” There was a pause in which they allowed the students to follow the instructions. “You may leave your bags here as we’ll be heading to the Dueling Arena. The activity requires more space than the classroom provides. If you’ll follow me…” With that, they led the way to the Arena which was only a very short way from the classroom.

Once there, Dhruv ushered the students in. Just what would they find? Six life size cutouts depicting six unique situations, situated at different intervals in a circle around the room:
  • An old Muggle lady walking a tabby
  • A Witch casting Avada Kedavra {recognised by the speech bubble with the incantation in it and the signature flash of green light emitting from her wand}
  • A child flying a kite
  • A thief discreetly sneaking his hand into someone’s purse
  • A Wizard on a broomstick about to score a goal
  • A Hag about to attack a child
But what do they mean? And how in the world did these cutouts tie into the activity? All will be revealed shortly; for now the students could simply take in the setup of the Arena.

Now that the students had been given the opportunity to take in the cutouts, Dhruv launched into the explanation of how to go about completing the activity. “As you can see, there are six cutouts: three depict innocent activities and the remaining three depict ones that are frowned upon.” Dhruv pointed as they continued to each: “The good: an old Muggle lady walking a tabby, a child flying a kite and a wizard on a broomstick about to score a goal. The bad: a witch casting Avada Kedavra, the spell is easily recognised by the incantation in the speech bubble and the signature flash of green light emitting from her wand, a thief discreetly sneaking his hand into someone’s purse and a hag about to attack a child.

“Your task is to make your way around the Arena from this starting point.”
The professor indicated a thick and bold yellow line a few feet from where the group stood. “Using the Knockback Jinx, blast the baddies away. However, there are a few points to be noted, points that will keep you on your toes. Half of the cutouts are situated on the left of the Arena, half on the right. They will not remain in plain view, nor will they appear in the same order for everyone; as you start from the line, they will pop up at intervals. The three at the left will popup and linger for five seconds at a relatively steady pace which will give you time to think about whether it needs to be blasted. However, the three on the right will pop up and linger only for a second or two. This leaves you with a limited amount of reaction time you will have. The goal is to blast as many of the baddies as possible while leaving the rest unscathed.”

Dhruv fell silent as they gazed around at the students to see if there were any questions.

“Right. If you will fall into a line to await your turn, we shall get started.”

OOC: OOC: The main activity’s here! I drew inspiration from 1997’s Men In Black where Will Smith’s character was being tested as a possible agent for the team. Feel free to look up that scene if you are not familiar with it!
Basically, your character will have to cover the Arena from left to right, while knocking over the bad guy cutouts using the Knockback Jinx. I will be posting for the cutouts however, you’re free to RP the outcome of your charrie’s spellwork. There’s no need to await a turn to commence the activity; simply RP as it being your turn.

The class will end on Wednesday 26th June at 11 PM EST. If you have questions, please reach out to me!

As Bry continued to practice she vaguely took notice of Khanna walking around the room. Only when he stopped beside her desk did she pause and look up at him, a proud smile on her face. "Thank you! So far it's not that difficult." This could be for many reasons. One being the simple fact that she hadn't exactly tried to perform the actual spell for real yet. That was coming all in time.

First though, she would be writing down some notes on ALL that Professor Khanna was saying. Three different strengths to this spell as well as six color variations! It was a great thing that it was specified right away how it didn't matter which color was produced because Bry would be one of those that would find herself getting upset if she couldn't cast the strongest light. So she made sure to underline that the colors didn't matter in here notes. This was very important!

As for when she would use the spell, well that really depended on the situation. If she was being attacked by someone or something she might use it. Or maybe in a duel it might be useful. It could probably be used for other things as well, but she wasn't really sure what else right now. This was okay, because they were moving on! It was time for the field trip!

The small Slytherin was up on her feet the moment they were told they could be. All of her things being put quickly back into her bag and leaving it behind on her chair. There was a definite skip to her step as she hurried along the corridor all the way to... the Arena. Well that wasn't what she had been hoping for! A nice stroll somewhere out on the grounds maybe? Yet this seemed to be where they were staying. Alright then.

Several long moments were taken to study each of the large cutouts as all that Khanna said was taken into account. This activity sounded... ummm... not as easy as simply practicing the spell, Professor! And all of her hurrying along to see where their little outing was potentially going to land her, it had landed her directly at the front of the line! She was first!

Deep breath, Bry. Deep breath. Focus. Wand at the ready. She could do this! Her blue eyes moved from left to right. Right to left. A few seconds was hardly any time at all! Was this how her papa and Nova felt being Aurors?! The moment a 'baddie' appeared or so she hoped (they moved so fast!), Bry cast the spell as quickly as she could hoping it actually worked. "Flipendo!" She was going to give it her all.

Sydney definitely heard a chuckle from Professor Khanna when she gave her answer. It was rather amusing to think about someone touching a venomous tentacula, and it sounded exactly like something her siblings would do. Fortunately they had her to stop them from doing stupid things like that. Honestly, there weren’t many people she’d cast the Knockback Jinx for in that situation. It wasn’t the tentacula’s fault some people weren’t smart enough to leave it alone.

At the professor’s instructions, she followed the others to the dueling arena, eager to start practicing as soon as possible. Her grayish-blue eyes scanned the area, observing the six cutouts. She had a pretty good idea where this activity was going, even before she heard the directions. She listened with a slight frown. The idea of “good guys” and “bad guys” seemed a bit… subjective.

How did they know the muggle lady didn’t steal that cat? How did they know the thief wasn’t actually taking back something that rightfully belonged to him? The guy scoring the goal could’ve cheated to get it; the kid with the kite could be annoying someone by being loud or tromping over someone’s lawn. The witch casting Avada Kedavra could be defending herself from an attack, and the hag… was only doing what was in its nature. Morality was rarely as black and white as people wanted to believe.

Whatever Sydney felt about assigning morality to inanimate objects, she wouldn’t turn down a chance to practice a new spell… especially one with bombastic and/or chaotic effects. She took her place in line, practically bouncing in place as she waited her turn. When her turn came, she drew her wand. Her eyes scanned from left to right. As soon as an approved target appeared (she was not calling it a “bad guy”!), she wasted no time making the check mark wand movement with a hook at the end. “Flipendo!” she cast confidently.

Dhruv knew this was one of the ways in which Aurors trained. Having worked for a bit at the Ministry {albeit in a different department}, they were familiar with many way in which the respective departments worked.
With Bryony stepping past the line, the first cutout - the discreet thief sneaking a hand into a purse - popped out. It lingered for four seconds, awaiting a reaction of being left alone or potentially blasted. The little Slytherin chose to blast it - a wise decision. Whether or not the cutout was smashed to smithereens, it would disappear in one way or the other. As Bryony continued through the Arena, the next to popup happened to be a Wizard on a broomstick about to score a goal.

SPOILER!!: Sydney!

Sydney just might be overthinking these cutouts. They were exactly what Dhruv described them to be because the descriptions served as a guide to the lesson’s activity. Nothing more, nothing less.
Up popped a wizard casting Avada Kedavra! The spell beelined directly for that particular cutout and like for the students, regardless if the spell collided, as Sydney proceeded the next cutout would make its appearance. This time, it was one of the Hag about to attack a child.

OOC: That’s a wrap, guys! Thank you for participating. The thread will close in a few hours.
