One of the wonderful things about magic was that Charms could be used to protect one from the elements, particularly on this January morning. You’re able to make your way towards the Pumpkin Patch without hindrances as the path to it has been cleared. As you approach the Patch, you will feel the temperature rise to one that was comfortable enough for you to enjoy today’s lesson; a measure put in place only for the next few hours.
Professor Khanna awaits you in the temporarily magically extended Patch, giving you a break from being cooped up in the Castle due to the weather. As with their previous lessons held outdoors, there are tree stumps for you to get yourself comfortable on. The whiteboard, upon which a question is written, faces these stumps while a short distance behind the board is a neat pile of freshly grown pumpkins. Yes, they had thrived, magically of course, despite the cold weather.
Your professor greets you before gesturing to the coat rack which was magicked to be suspended in the air and within reach of even first years. Should you no longer need your coat, the rack was just to the side of the gate through which you entered for your use.
Don’t forget to pay attention to the words on the board!

“A Lethifold is about to attack. Which spell would you not use?
Please do not voice your answer until you are called upon.”
OOC:heyyy, lovelies! Welcome to the OOC lesson of the term! Kindly keep in mind that it would not be the first DADA lesson to be taught IC-wise. This is also a gentle reminder that all rules - lesson and general site apply for the duration of this RP! We'll get started in about 24 hours :3CLASS HAS COMMENCED!

Kara was all for some sort of repentance with Professor Khanna. She still felt terrible about the interactions in the forbidden forest at the start of the term and not to mention with the lesson being held outside it was definitely a nice break from being cooped up in the castle. It was also a nice touch that Professor Khanna had warmed up the pumpkin patch for them, even if only temporary. She made a note to research that charm because it would definitely be useful.
Lethifold about to attack. Which spell would she not use? Reflecting back on the acromantula incident, easy for her. Lumos was not going to be effective. Well it sort of worked, but not really. And it only helped to see the path ahead, but also made her more visible to the predator.
Impediment jinx wouldn't be of any use and yet it was today's focus? Weird. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to learn spells that WOULD be useful? She supposed there was a method to Khanna's teaching but Kara definitely didn't see it. The wand movement was easy enough though. "im-PED-i-MEN-ta," she recited. "Im-pede-ment ah," she said again quicker this time, adding the 'ah' as a delayed.
Considering Khanna's question, she bit her lip. "Intention." Which was what that older slytherin boy had said. Oops. But it was seriously the only thing her young first year mind could think of because everything seemed to come back to intention. As the Ravenclaw girl elaborated on as well.
Waiting her turn for the older kids to go first, she stepped up to the yellow line once it was her turn. Palms sweaty, the Gryffindor girl watched with increased anxiety as she waited for the pumpkin to zoom at her, hoping it wouldn't be too bad. Instinctively raising her wand, she shouted, "Impediment." forgetting the final syllable in her panic, the pumpkin continued to motion forward at her...."Immedi... Impede..." her mind went blank but the pumpkin wasn't slowing down, it's sinister face glaring at her, saying how dumb she was... taunting her... It was all she could do but to dive to the side, and let the pumpkin collide instead with the wall behind her.
She failed. This was awful and embarrassing. And when Khanna spoke again asking them for their thoughts on why the outcome may not have been what they intended, Kara couldn't find the words to speak. She just wanted to leave. She would find time to practice on her own, without the scrutiny of her peers. Not that they were judging her, but she felt judged, even if they hadn't been paying her any mind.

Iris, having caught sight of JT’s near-miss and subsequent accidental demolition of a pumpkin, couldn’t help but giggle. "Great minds," she smiled, pointing ahead at her own messy attempt. As much as she enjoyed observing JT, she needed to recenter and brace herself - especially seeing as the next pumpkin was levitating into place at the far end of the track. She exhaled slowly, forcing herself to focus without her signature overthinking. No unnecessary calculations, just the intent of the spell. Stop. Halt. Delay. No kaboom and no splat.
As soon as the sinister-looking gourd began its charge, she raised her wand, her grip firm but not tense. This time, she cast before desperation could cloud her execution. "Impedimenta!" The spell shot forward, striking the pumpkin square in the center of its ridiculous smile. It didn’t blast backward like before, nor did it stop as cleanly as she would have liked. Instead, it lurched and slowed as though caught in invisible molasses or like the air was made from Auntie Eureka's cure-all split pea soup. It wobbled midair, its momentum visibly struggling against the magic pressing down on it, and for a brief moment it seemed like it might stop completely. But alas, little by little, it inched forward, the resistance wavering as her spell faltered and the pumpkin eventually broke free, coming to a rolling to a stop just over the yellow line. Not a failure, but not a perfect success either. The blonde let out a breath and blew some wisps of hair out of her face. It was better than last time, but it still lacked consistency. She needed to fine-tune the balance between power and control, to strengthen the hold without slipping into raw force...
...at another time, apparently.
The Ravenclaw lowered her wand as the pumpkins froze in place, rolling her shoulders as she considered the professor’s question. It was a good one and one she’d already begun dissecting before they had even asked - hence her Bombarda conclusions. "For me, it was a midway point. I could get the spell to work, but the precision was inconsistent." She frowned slightly, glancing at the remains of the pumpkin she had accidentally blasted earlier. "I think the discrepancy between intent and outcome comes down to subconscious influence. If part of your mind is straying toward a different spell - one that feels instinctually more effective in the moment - it could override your actual intent, even if only slightly. Impulsively." She paused, gathering her thoughts some more before continuing. "That could mean the best prevention method isn't just practicing the spell itself, but strengthening the ability to maintain singular focus. If the mind wavers between two different forms of magic, the result will be unstable or explosive." Again, her eyes glanced over at her pumpkin bits and then over to JT's. Iris tapped a finger against the side of her wand, delving more into her thought process because she had been invited to do precisely that. "It makes me wonder if training through contrast ... meaning you like... practice spells with opposing effects back to back. Might help reinforce control."
With all that, Iris gave a small nod and rolled her wand between her fingers in place of a fidget spinner to distract her thoughts and prevent her from spewing more theories. Practicing in the Dueling Arena would at least provide a more controlled setting...one where she wouldn't be distracted by rogue thoughts of rune inscriptions or ancient gourd carvings. Probably. She pulled her coat tighter around herself as the crisp air settled in, then turned to JT with a soft smile and glint of expectation in her gaze. "Practice with me in the arena?"

Kara had nothing to worry about. As far as they were concerned, she and the other two had learnt their lesson about wandering into Forbidden places. Jaws had fully recovered from his ordeal and Dhruv and Ean were absolutely fine. Just as importantly as Jaws, the three students had gotten out of the Forest safely.
Maybe it was just them but they thought that Kara’s heart wasn’t into today’s lesson as it usually was. Dhruv wondered if there was something bothering her or if she still was thinking too much about the Forest happenings. Perhaps they’d be able to have a short chat with her soon to determine if anything as such were the case. In addition, they’d pay close attention to Kara’s practice in the Arena.
SPOILER!!: Iris!

Iris was quite determined, it seemed. As she should be; that sort of determination would get her a very far way in life. Despite there not being complete success on the advancing pumpkin, Dhruv felt proud to watch the progress. It was simply remarkable and with added attempts, Iris and the other students would have no further issues with the jinx.
Now this response was one that wasn’t often volunteered and it had the DADA professor nodding in agreement. “That is true, it's quite easy for your mind to wand, and in turn wander to another spell, whether it actually may be effective or we have that hope that it may be.” They smiled as Iris stressed on the importance of focus. This was something Dhruv attempted to remind the students during every lesson and through the Concentration Meditation exercises. “Focus is vital, it always has been and always will be especially in life threatening situations.” Dhruv paused, considering the suggestion. “Tell you what, Ms. Harden. This is something we can explore to see how it works for you.’’ And perhaps by extension, other students. “You and I can have a session in the Arena practising spells with opposing effects one afternoon. Just let me know when you’re free.”
Of course, each student knew they could also approach Dhruv for one on one practise sessions. During the course of their years at Hogwarts, they had been vocal about this.
